The Bleak Retirement Outlook for Displaced Workers

Posted: at 10:17 pm

If you thought that Americans as a whole were unprepared for a secure retirement, you should see the ones who have lost their job.

A report from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies finds many unemployed and underemployed workers have been dipping into their retirement accounts to fund their regular expenses. In addition, the retirement savings for many of those workers in their 40s and 50s is virtually non-existent.

A dire situation for displaced workers

The report, titled The Cracked Nest Egg, is part of the 13th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey. Its findings paint a bleak picture for workers who lost their jobs during the recent recession.

"The Great Recession has led to a potentially devastating impact on the retirement outlook of American workers who have become unemployed or underemployed," said Catherine Collinson, president of the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, in a statement. "Many have raided retirement accounts to make ends meet -- and it will be difficult for them to overcome these savings setbacks once they regain employment."

Among the center's findings:

In addition, 30% report being without health insurance, placing their finances at risk should they have a medical emergency or serious illness.

Retirement savings: How low can they go?

Perhaps one of the most troubling aspects of the Transamerica report is just how little most displaced workers have in their retirement savings. The estimated median retirement savings for these households was $5,800. Among middle-age individuals, the amount was even lower.

As part of the study, median retirement savings were broken down by age:

168 Hours a Week of Retirement? Better Get a Job

Posted: at 10:17 pm

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- I recently attended an educational session by Mitch Anthony, an author and retirement planning expert, which discussed thinking about retirement in a new way. Most people still view retirement as crossing a finish line because they have reached a certain age. This construct is based on our nation's industrial past when most workers performed physically demanding jobs. The paradigm then was you worked until age 65 when you were physically worn out and then you retired. The company you worked for would typically pay you a pension "for life." Unfortunately "for life" in the good old days might have only meant two or three years! Fast forward to our current U.S. economy: Most workers today are no longer engaged in physically demanding jobs. Instead most of us are engaged in intellectual or service-based work. So in today's world many of us are capable of working past age 65. For most people working past 65 is a better option than permanently retiring at an artificial age-based finish line. For individuals who work for compensation during retirement there are the financial benefits. Retirees who work part time during retirement can defer collecting social security until their full retirement age or even to age 70. Waiting to collect social security until at least your full retirement age results in a benefit 25% higher than starting at age 62. Another financial benefit of part time work is it might give a retiree access to health care coverage till they reach Medicare eligibility at age 65. Finally, the post-retirement income might allow the retiree to defer drawing down a portion of their retirement assets just a bit longer. Working past age 65 can be helpful for financial reasons but it goes deeper than extra money and doesn't have to be about compensation. If you are lucky enough not to need the money, volunteering at a not-for-profit is a valid form of work. Some non-financial benefits of working during retirement include: sense of relevance feeling of contribution and making an impact creativity competition for those who crave it connectivity to others The commonality among the non-financial benefits of working are that they all help with our emotional and physical well being. Working during retirement can also aid our cognitive health. The more we use our brains the healthier they are likely to be! The key to our second act work is engaging in work we find meaningful and that brings value to others. The great thing about it is we can define for ourselves what constitutes meaningful and provides value to others. In a nutshell, we can create our own personalized retirement job that works for us. I want to pass on two suggestions from Anthony when planning for your own retirement. The first is to write down how you plan to spend your 168 hours a week in retirement. If you are staring at an almost blank piece of paper you have got some work to do. The second idea is to get a mentor for retirement. Find someone you know who is doing retirement well, from your perspective, and engage them in a dialogue about how they did it. Remember, having enough "financial resources" to retire is only the first step towards a successful retirement. --By Michael Maye Michael Maye is the founder and president of MJM Financial Advisors (www.mjmfinadv.com), a registered investment advisory firm in Berkeley Heights, N.J. Up Close and Personal with James 'The Missile' Magnussen [BLOG]

Posted: at 10:16 pm

Australian 100m freestyle swimmer, James 'The Missile' Magnussen -currentWorld Champion, high profile media celebrity, genuine and honest Port Macquaire boy - was the Aussie Olympic hopeful for the London 2012 Olympic Games, tipped to bring home a bucket full of medals.

The 6ft 5in, 21-year-old swimmer had the entire country watching his every move. Years of commitment, dedication and hard work were about to come to fruition in that Olympic Games moment, his first Olympic Games.

So the eyes of a nationwereupon 'The Missile' as our golden boy, looking to him with the hope and high expectation of bringing home gold for Australia.

The Men's 4 x 100m Freestyle Relay was his first event and all odds were on the Aussie team to win. The shock of a nation was felt when the supposed unbeatable Aussie team failed to medal. Then came Jame's individual event, the 100m freestyle and things turned around with an extremely close finish with James scoring a silver.

Follow us

James also competed in the 50m freestyle. And then on the last night of swimming the Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay Final where the team gained a bronze.

So, when we sat down to chat only two days after his final Olympic swim event and now with a Silver and Bronze Olympic medalunder hisbelt, I asked James: "How does he look back and reflect uponhis performance, now he is on the other side of the London 2012 Olympic Games?"

James talks about how he has learnt so muchfrom the experience, about dealing with the pressure and expectations of a nation, about knowing himself more. He has embraced his strong, personnal relationships with those close to him to help him through the other side.

Spending this time to speak to Samsung Global Bloggers - only days after the conclusion of his Olympic events - and according to James is his firstinterview since his events, demonstrates his close relationship with Samsung as one of his major sponsorship partners.

Olympic success for Irish Brother

Posted: at 10:16 pm

10 August 2012 Last updated at 09:34 ET

Team Ireland is celebrating its first gold medal at London 2012, thanks to boxer Katie Taylor, but the Irish also had an unlikely part to play in another, very special Olympic victory on Thursday.

Kenyan athlete David Rudisha, who took gold in the 800m final, also became the first athlete to set a new world record on the London track.

The 23-year-old is the product of a highly successful training regime set up by an order of Irish missionaries and headed by a 63-year-old Catholic religious brother from County Cork, Colm O'Connell.

Rudisha stormed to the finishing line in a time of 1:40.91 and the blistering pace he set helped to pull all but one of his fellow 800m finalists to a personal or national best.

For some, what he achieved was overshadowed by the colourful exploits of a victorious Usain Bolt, but not for Lord Coe.

Before the race, the London 2012 boss, who twice won silver in the same event, described him as "the most impressive track and field athlete at these games".

After the race, Lord Coe said it would go down as "as one of the greatest Olympic victories".

Rudisha is the latest in a long line of world and Olympic champions produced by a training regime first set up at a Kenyan boarding school.

St Patrick's High School, in Iten, was established in 1961 by Patrician missionaries from Ireland.

Trius Therapeutics Holds Steady and Reports Positive Financials

There is something to be said for slow, steady, and cerebral; especially, if you are invested in a biopharmaceutical firm. This industry does not turn out products overnight. It is a slow, long and grueling process of development, clinical trial testing, FDA maneuvering, safe (GMP) good manufacturing practice production, effective distributing and marketing, and obtaining key partners. And then there is the money! Costs of clinical trial testing are exorbitant and continue to rise.

A steady hand at the controls is a must. That includes long term commitment, persistence, and an ability to adjust to new and changing events, conditions, and regulations in theU.S. and worldwide alike. It also requires smart decision-making and skills from both sides of the brain. My observation is that the management at Trius Therapeutics (NASDAQ: TSRX) has just that.

The company released its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2012. While there are increases in losses from recent comparative periods, they are attributable to common business operations and environment in this industry when at the clinical trial stage. Here is an update on the firms results and their steady progress on development:

Cash

The company reported cash, cash equivalents and investments totaling $83.8 million June 30, 2012. This is sufficient to support their operations.

Operations

For the second quarter of 2012, Trius reported a net loss of $14.4 million. This compares to a 2011 net loss of $10.0 million. For the six months ended June 30, 2012, the company reported a net loss of $22.0 million compared to $20.1 million for the same period in 2011. Note: The increase in net loss during the three and six months ended June 30, 2012 was largely due to increased clinical trial expenses as compared to the same period in 2011.
