Yoga Studios Targeted by Government Agencies: Report

Posted: August 13, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Government regulators have been targeting yoga studios in New York, fining them for various infractions, according to a published report.

The New York City Department of Buildings fined studios for not having a proper permit and the states Labor Department audited studios that listed their instructors as independent contractors instead of as employees, The New York Times reports.

Yoga studio owners are complaining that the government agencies are looking for ways to make money from an industry that earns an estimated $6 billion a year in the United States, according to the Times.

"Agencies are suffering," J. Brown, the owner of Abhyasa Yoga in Brooklyn told the Times. "They think they can reinterpret statutes and apply them to yoga."

At least two studio owners say they were fined by the Buildings Department for failing to have a physical culture establishment permit, a requirement of businesses the agency considers health clubs. One of the studio owner's was fined $800, the Times said.

The Labor Department audited at least three studios for not listing instructors as full-time employees, the Times said.

Leo Rosales, a spokesman for the agency, told the Times that the status of employee-employer relationships at yoga studios are assessed on a case-by-case basis. "There are no statutory guidelines specific to yoga studios," he said.

Many yoga instructors teach classes at several studios, which would incur costs if they classified the instructors as employees.

"Equating yoga centers with gyms or weight loss salons is a little like equating a painting by Rothko with a billboard sign," Alison West, the executive director of Yoga for New York told the Times.

Indian Yoga Guru Detained After Anti-Graft Protest

Posted: at 12:12 pm

A popular yoga guru and thousands of his supporters were detained by police Monday as they tried to march to India's Parliament to intensify an anti-corruption protest and press for a change of government.

As he was led away by police, Baba Ramdev shouted slogans urging his supporters to fight to end India's endemic corruption and seek the repatriation of billions of dollars in illegal money he says Indians have stashed in foreign banks.

Waving Indian flags and shouting slogans, the protesters climbed into a row of police buses parked around the sprawling New Delhi fairground that Ramdev and his supporters had occupied for the past four days. Police said the protesters would be taken to a stadium on the outskirts of the city and would likely be released by Monday evening.

Before the march, the bearded, saffron-clad yogi urged his supporters to throw out the ruling Congress Party and bring in a "clean" government.

"Throw out the Congress; save the country," he shouted as his followers applauded and cheered wildly.

Ramdev, who had not eaten for the past four days, had set a Sunday evening deadline for a response from the government to his protest, but received none.

"The government has become completely deaf. We have to make them hear us. Now our protest will move from here to the doorstep of the Parliament," Ramdev said.

Ramdev told his supporters to be prepared to go to jail during their march since police would try to stop them from holding a rally near Parliament. He urged his followers to remain peaceful and not resort to violence as police removed them from Ramlila Ground.

Ramdev has been demanding a robust ombudsman law to keep checks on government, a strong and independent Central Bureau of Investigation and efforts to act against tax evasion and illegal money sent to banks abroad.

After losing post at Arizona State, Dennis Erickson unsure about future

Posted: at 11:15 am

by Doug Haller - Aug. 12, 2012 07:47 PM The Republic | azcentral.com

For most of his adult life, almost for as long as he can remember, Dennis Erickson has been on a football field in August, preparing, teaching, coaching the sport that has given him so much.

On a recent summer day, however, Erickson is driving in Idaho, running errands, wondering what he'll do next.

"It's very strange," Erickson said by phone. "I've been doing it for 40-some years as a coach, 40-some years doing one thing and now all of a sudden it's not there. It's strange. Really strange."

Nine months have passed since Erickson lost his job at Arizona State. Practically a day doesn't go by when the football coach doesn't wonder just what the hell happened. How a promising 6-2 start spiraled out of control, costing him his job, forcing the Sun Devils to go another direction with Todd Graham.

"I really don't have any answers," Erickson said. "We're sitting there 6-2, we have a great recruiting class coming in and then things go backward on us. But the bottom line is, I'm in charge, and when you lose four in a row like that, nothing good is going to happen. That's just how the game is. You got to win games, and we didn't win enough."

Hired to take the Sun Devils to a championship level, Erickson went 31-31 in five seasons. The Sun Devils went to two bowl games, but finished with a winning record just once, Erickson's first season.

This isn't the first time Erickson's been out of work. In 2005, after going 2-14 with the San Francisco 49ers, he was fired and didn't coach the next season. But that was different.

"It wasn't as bad because I knew I was going to get back in it the next year," Erickson said.

This time, his coaching future doesn't look as promising.

Sports and Health Club, Fort Collins Club, Remodels Locker Room and Group Fitness Room

Posted: at 11:14 am

FORT COLLINS, CO--(Marketwire -08/13/12)- Fort Collins Club, a sports and health club located in northern Colorado, is pleased to announce that it has begun remodeling the men's and women's locker rooms. The remodel, which began August 3rd, is planned to finish on August 27th. The locker rooms are still accessible for the time being, as currently Fort Collins Club is only remodeling one locker bay per room a week. The club will also be installing brand new flooring in both the men's and women's locker rooms. Installing the new flooring necessitates both locker rooms being entirely closed for the duration of the installation. This closing also includes the vanity, restroom, shower and steam room areas of the locker rooms.

In order to minimize inconvenience, Fort Collins Club has scheduled the flooring installation to occur from August 18th to August 27th, during the first week of school when fewer members typically use the Club. Items in lockers must be removed before August 17th. Staff members will remove any locks or personal items left behind. Fort Collins Club cannot guarantee that any removed items will be returned to their original owners.

Locker rooms will be closed for the duration of the flooring installation, which will begin Saturday August 18 and end Sunday, August 26, 2012. Gym-goers will be provided with alternate changing rooms to minimize inconvenience. Women will be able to use the conference room in the cardio area and men will use racquetball court 4. The sports and health club would also like to remind its members that there is an additional shower area in the family changing area (located by the outdoor pool) that will be available for use.

In addition to remodeling the flooring in both locker rooms, Fort Collins Club has also refinished the flooring in the group fitness room. The refinishing, which took place over the weekend of August 11th, was done in effort to make the room more appealing in addition to having a floor that was more conducive to group fitness workouts. Classes in the room resumed on August 13th.

Fort Collins Club stands among the leading gyms in Northern Colorado. Not only are they renowned for their stellar facility and customer service, but also for their extremely personalized workout plans and group fitness classes for their members. A rock climbing wall, salon and pool are just some of the additional features available for member use. The sports and health club can be contacted by phone at 970-224-2582 or website at http://www.fortcollinsclub.net.

Once every 4 years, the best athletes in the world meet to compete in humanitys greatest unifying traditionthe Olympics. The world gets to celebrate the phenomenal athletes that dedicate years to prepare for the games and work full time to maintain peak physical and mental condition. For the rest of us though, life goes on, and it can be a struggle to feel 100% all the time.

To celebrate the 2012 London Olympics, the life solutions experts at TUHF Incorporated with the help of former Olympic Athlete Mary Louise Zeller reveal 9 supplements for gaining a competitive edge.

What's next? Retiring athletes face quandary as they adjust to post-Olympics life

Posted: at 12:14 am

LONDON - Most-decorated Olympian Michael Phelps, 27, is thinking about improving his golf game and travelling. Gold medallist Victoria Pendleton, 31, is looking forward to getting married and doing "normal stuff." Misty Elizabeth May-Treanor, 35, is carting her beach volleyball gold medal home to focus on family.

As the London Games come to an end, some 30-odd retiring Olympians face the daunting question what's next?

For world-class athletes who have focused their lives on training, their next Olympian task has no direct path: Readjusting to a routine outside competitive sports and creating a new life that may or may not involve the limelight.

The challenges have given rise to a small field of advisers who specialize in helping retiring athletes cope with what can be an abrupt change.

"These people have a strong Olympic identity; they see themselves only as athletes. Unless they have good friendships and connections outside of sport, it can be quite painful," says Misha Botting, a sports psychologist at the SportScotland Institute. "Most experience a low-mood state after the games because it's such an exciting event."

As gold medallists , Phelps, Pendleton and May-Treanor have endorsement and coaching possibilities far beyond most top-level athletes, thousands of whom will be leaving London without a medal to gild their careers.

Some retiring athletes can suffer depression, according to retired Olympic gymnast Craig Heap, although he told The Associated Press that he was "quite pleased" when he stopped competing at 29.

"I was looking forward to my retirement. I had achieved my best and was looking to start another chapter of my life," said Heap, now 39.

Going back to a normal life may run more smoothly for athletes with a day job. But for those who have never worked, the task might be more challenging. It's here that self-described "performance lifestyle advisers" can help them develop careers outside the sporting world.

"We go through their future plan of career, their skills," said Gary Penn, an adviser with the English Institute of Sport. "We look at their CVs (resumes), help them apply for work. Sometimes we do mock interviews for potential jobs."
