Impact of extra farms minor, says scientist
Posted: August 29, 2012 at 9:12 pm
Dr Paul Gillespie
A Cawthron Institute scientist appearing for New Zealand King Salmon yesterday told the hearing considering whether to allow the company to expand its farms that his personal opinion was that there should be no marine farming in the Marlborough Sounds.
Professionally, he believed the effects of extra salmon farms on the water column would be minor, and he was confident that monitoring systems could be set up to mitigate any effects from additional salmon farms in the Sounds.
Paul Gillespie was questioned by Sustain Our Sounds lawyer Warwick Heal about Cawthron's role in the application, and whether the company supported King Salmon's proposal.
Dr Gillespie said he did not accept any suggestion that Cawthron was pushing the company's proposal.
Cawthron scientists had assessed the application according to science. Scientists' personal views, which they kept separate from their professional views, could be totally different.
He had worked in circumstances where that was the case, and he had to be very careful.
Mr Heal asked Dr Gillespie for his personal view on the King Salmon application, and he said on a personal basis in this case, he had some bias.
"My personal opinion, I'm a reactionary. I don't like to see any development in any sort of natural environment. I'm a keen fisherman, I spend a lot of my time on the water. I have a place in the Sounds. I don't like to see any development, mussels or salmon. I like to see it wide open. That's just me.
"My professional experience and professional opinion is in my two briefings of evidence."

WHAT I READ: I never went to college, so I used books as my college. I love business and personal development books.
LAST BOOK READ: The last book I read was Entreleadership by Dave Ramsey -- awesome book about leadership and how to grow a business.
BOOK THAT MOVED ME: Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki was the first book I ever read by choice, and it began the journey of success and personal development.
ALL-TIME FAVORITES: I could easily list 15 favorite books, so this is a hard one. Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale
FAVORITE AUTHOR AND WHY: My favorite author would have to be Jim Rohn. He has a way of simplifying concepts to be used for success in life and success in business.
WHAT I READ AT THE BEACH: I can never be caught on a plane or on a vacation without some kind of fitness magazine!
IVE BEEN MEANING TO READ: Any book by Warren Buffet -- I have yet to read any of his books.

Online offerings at FHUSD
Posted: at 9:11 pm
Fountain Hills Unified School District maintains a partnership with Mesa Distance Learning for online education options but, back in 2009, the local district was approved to lay the groundwork for its own online program.
FHUSDs online classes have been operated under probationary status for the past three years, set for final approval by the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year.
While Superintendent Tom Lawrence said he does not foresee any complications preventing the districts online program from reaching final approval, he said that funding for a fully fleshed out offering simply isnt in the cards at this time.
[Average Daily Membership] is a big part of it, Lawrence said.
You basically need seed money to get something like this up and going and we dont have a source for that yet.
In 1998, the Arizona Legislature created the TAPBI Program to improve student achievement and extend academic options beyond the traditional classroom.
The original group of schools included the Mesa Distirct, Peoria, and a handful of other district and charters, Lawrence said.
The Arizona Online Initiative opened it up to a second wave of schools a few years ago and we jumped in on that. We received approval and began our pilot program.
FHUSD was approved for every course it submitted, including oral communication, written communication, honors/pre-AP English, world history and geography, United States history, economics/free enterprise, education professions 1, elements of design, photography II, photography III, advanced placement studio art and 2D design, graphics intern and boys health.
The high school offered social studies, U.S. history and sophomore English during its pilot year in 2010-11 and, since then, have had a handful of students take advantage of the program each year.

Health Plan Provider SeeChange Health Introduces Value-Based Benefit Design to Colorado
Posted: at 7:20 pm
DENVER, Aug. 28, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The Colorado Department of Insurance has authorized SeeChange Health Insurance (www.SeeChangeHealth.com) to offer medical plans to the state's small businesses. SeeChange Health is already the fastest growing health plan in California.
"Our health insurance is new, different, and we believe, better," said Alan Katz, SeeChange Health's EVP for Sales & Marketing. "Like traditional plans we're there for our members when they're sick or injured. But we go further, offering financial rewards to those taking steps to improve and manage their health."
This approach, referred to as value-based benefit design, has been shown to reduce the rate of growth of health care costs by revealing undiagnosed chronic conditions. "Early detection and intervention of serious health problems means a better quality of life for members, a more productive workforce for employers and lower health care costs for everyone," Katz said. "SeeChange Health's technology platform has long helped larger employer groups enjoy the advantages of value-based benefit plans. We're now bringing this innovation to the small group market."
SeeChange Health Insurance will offer 14 preferred provider (PPO) plans throughout Colorado including three compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). These policies are available only to small businesses of 50 or fewer employees through licensed, independent brokers. SeeChange Health anticipates being able to offer coverage to larger groups in the near future.
"Colorado is a state that appreciates the importance of health and fitness. SeeChange Health's focus on wellness, prevention and early detection is a great fit with the people and culture of the state," noted Katz.

Are These the 5 Best Retirement Shares in the FTSE 100?

LONDON -- The last five years have been tough for those in retirement. Portfolio valuations have been hammered, and annuity rates have plunged. There's no sign things will improve anytime soon, either, as the eurozone and the U.K. economy look set to muddle through at best for some years to come.
A great way to protect yourself from the downturn, however, is to build your retirement fund with shares of large, well-run companies that should grow their earnings steadily over the coming decades. Over time, such investments ought to result in rising dividends and inflation-beating capital growth.
In this series, I'm tracking down the U.K. large caps that have the potential to beat the FTSE 100 over the long term and support a lower-risk, income-generating retirement fund (you can see all of the companies I've covered so far on this page).
In this article I'm going to introduce the five top-scoring shares so far and see how they compare. They are Unilever (NYSE: UL) , Tesco (LSE: TSCO.L) , Royal Dutch Shell (NYSE: RDS-B) , SABMiller (LSE: SAB.L) , and British American Tobacco (NYSE: BTI) .
First, let's take a look at how each of them scored against my five key retirement share criteria:

Unilever
Tesco
Royal Dutch Shell
SABMiller
