Servicemembers Boosting Military Benefits with Commercial Life Insurance, First Command Reports
Posted: September 21, 2012 at 8:15 am
FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Men and women in uniform are increasingly relying on commercial life insurance as a supplement to the low-cost group coverage they receive as part of their government benefits package.
The First Command Financial Behaviors Index reveals that 63 percent of middle-class military families (senior NCOs and commissioned officers in pay grades E-6 and above with household incomes of at least $50,000) own term life insurance, up 14 points from August 2011. In addition, 48 percent of families own some form of permanent life insurance coverage, up 6 points from last year.
The growing popularity of commercial life insurance among our men and women in uniform is an important reminder that these families live in the shadow of war and recognize the risk of an untimely death, said Scott Spiker, CEO of First Command. While middle-class military families appreciate the significant value of the life insurance coverage available through the federal government, they understand that extra coverage may be needed to build a risk management program that more thoroughly addresses their financial future. The increasing interest in commercial life products may also reflect fears about pending military budget cuts and a proposed overhaul of the military retirement system, which have been fueling worries among active-duty service members about the future of their careers in the armed forces.
Active-duty personnel are eligible for up to $400,000 in Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance, commonly known as SGLI. They may add optional spousal coverage of up to $100,000 and dependent coverage of up to $10,000. After leaving the service military personnel may convert SGLI to Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI); however, premiums may be higher and are based on the age of the insured. So many military families, if they are insurable, opt for supplemental commercial policies in order to increase their overall coverage now and provide longer-term protection (either in addition to or as a supplement for VGLI) for their post-military lives.
The most popular form of permanent life insurance coverage among the military is whole life insurance, according to the survey. These products are owned by 39 percent of survey respondents, up 8 points from last year.
Permanent life insurance is growing in popularity among middle-class military families. The Index survey reveals that 28 percent of respondents who don't own a permanent life policy say they are likely to consider purchasing it for themselves or someone in their household.
Interest in commercial life insurance coverage is considerably more constrained among members of the general population. The Index reveals that 45 percent of civilian respondents with similar incomes report owning term life insurance, up 6 points from last year. And 36 percent of general population families report ownership of a permanent life insurance product, which is statistically unchanged from last year. Among those who dont own a permanent life policy, just 18 percent say they are likely to consider purchasing it for themselves or someone in their household.
First Command surveyed consumers on their life insurance coverage as part of its September observance of Life Insurance Awareness Month, which was created by the LIFE Foundation in response to growing concern about the large number of Americans who lack adequate life insurance protection. According to the industry research group LIMRA, 30 percent of U.S. households have no life insurance coverage.

Weston hopes for national fitness day
Posted: at 8:15 am
Member of Parliament John Weston is hoping his National Health and Fitness Day bill will receive unanimous support when it hits the House of Commons on September 24.
The West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea-to-Sky MP said he has planned a walk from the steps of Parliament Hill to Ottawas city hall for that day, a symbol of the cooperation needed between different levels of government in order to improve the health of Canadians.
On a personal level I just saw when I reached Ottawa how unhealthy was the lifestyle that MPs lead. So much time on airplanes and in committees and sitting in Parliament, Weston said, explaining the inspiration for his second piece of non-partisan legislation. I just resolved that if I was going to remain productive and useful to the people who voted me in, I needed to work at staying healthy.
Weston hopes that one day Canadian calendars will mark National Health and Fitness Day on the first Saturday of June.
He pointed to data released by Statistics Canada and public health agencies as indicators that the health of Canadians has declined since 1981 in terms of obesity, a risk factor for heart disease and even cancer.
Its not a silver bullet, he said, but the hope is that by filling recreation facilities across the country, more people will be encouraged to live a healthier lifestyle. There could also be economic benefits, Weston argued.
Were looking at a direct financial hit of $4.3 billion to our healthcare system relating to over-weightness and obesity, he said.
Weston launched National Health and Fitness Day this year on June 2 but next year he hopes it will go national.
Like a previous private members bill introduced by Weston dealing with the growth of crystal meth and ecstasy use in Canada, the MP hopes this legislation will receive unanimous support.
His parliamentarian fitness initiative has seen MPs from both sides of the House participate in physical activities, going for runs on Tuesdays and swims on Thursdays.

Posted: at 8:14 am
LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - Sep 19, 2012) - MMRGlobal, Inc. ( OTCBB : MMRF ) (MMR) today announced that Mike Dietrich, a business executive formerly with Office Depot, School Specialty and Troxell Communications, will work with the Company leading the effort to sell its MyMedicalRecords Personal Health Record products and services to retailers, with particular focus on the launch of MMR's Prepaid Personal Health Record cards at retail.Dietrich will also manage sales to the education marketplace including schools and universities. A nine-year veteran of the United States Air Force, Dietrich will also assist the Company with programs for Veterans, including connecting to MMRGlobal's MyBlueButton.com initiative.Additionally, Dietrich will use his experience and expertise to work with CEO Bob Lorsch on the sale of Emergency Services through Personal Health Records to major wireless carriers and cell phone retailers and operators.
"Mike Dietrich is one of the most qualified individuals that MMR could have added to its team," said Lorsch. "I met Mike when I was CEO of SmarTalk, where he was first to launch prepaid phone cards at retail in office superstores. It was Mike who forced the creation of swipe activation at point-of-sale, which I invented and patented. We have worked together for over 20 years and I am very excited that he will be selling our Personal Health Record products and services to retailers, educational institutions and to Veterans."
Dietrich served as Office Depot's Vice President, North American Technology Merchandising and Marketing Group, as well as Vice President of Office Depot's Telecommunications Services Group for more than 10 years, starting in 1993.He directed the company's wireless strategy from analog to digital services and the roll-out of PCS in North America while leading the introduction of wireless services to retail. Dietrich launched PCS services in more than 80 markets in the U.S. and Canada over a five year period.
"From my experience, Personal Health Records represent an ideal product for retail," said Dietrich.MyMedicalRecords is the perfect addition to the service offerings of any retailer because it has all the elements that merchants look for: it provides a highly relevant service for their customers, it provides the opportunity to generate profit from inventory-less services, and it has the ability to drive additional demand through use.In the education sector, MMR products have a multitude of applications that can reduce cost and complexity in student healthcare records management. One perfect application is in the management of student health records associated with extracurricular activities such as sports and performing arts.MMR also would be ideal to add to the student enrollment package for colleges and universities and could even be used as a fundraising service for schools and PTO/PTA organizations."
Following Office Depot, Dietrich joined School Specialty in Appleton, Wisconsin as head of operations, marketing and merchandising for three years for the Educational Resources Division. After leaving School Specialty, he worked as CFO/COO for Troxell Communications where he was responsible for the development of Troxell's new website and the strategic marketing partnership with WeAreTeachers, the leading educator website and social media integrator.

Arsenal's Giroud satisfied with Montpellier return
Posted: at 8:14 am
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud was content with his personal performance in last night's Champions League win over former club Montpellier.
The Frenchman supplied the assist for Lukas Podolski to equalise in the 16th minute after Younes Belhanda's opener before Gervinho made it 2-1 to the Gunners for the eventual victory.
Giroud admitted he was happy to return to the Stade de la Mosson to play in front of his old fans and was also satisfied with how he performed on the night.
"I tried not to really think about the context of the match," he told L'Equipe. "I was just so happy to come back here, even if I didn't score.
"I had a decisive assist in our first goal and I was quite satisfied with my own performance.
"We won and now we are in a good position. We remain undefeated and that is perfect for us."

To Succeed, Forget Self-Esteem
Posted: at 8:13 am
A growing body of research suggests that self-compassion, rather than self-esteem, may be the key to unlocking personal and career potential. Psychologist Heidi Grant Halvorson explains why self-compassion a willingness to look at your own mistakes and shortcomings with kindness and understanding is more than just a buzzword.
Image remixed from Ljupco Smokovski (Shutterstock).
If you look under the Self-Help heading on Amazon, youll find roughly 5000 books listed under the subhead Self-Esteem. The vast majority of these books aim to not only tell you why your self-esteem might be low, but to show you how to get your hands on some more of it. Its a thriving business because self-esteem is, at least in Western cultures, considered the bedrock of individual success. You cant possibly get ahead in life, the logic goes, unless you believe you are perfectly awesome.
And of course you must be perfectly awesome in order to keep believing that you are so you live in quiet terror of making mistakes, and feel devastated when you do. Your only defence is to refocus your attention on all the things you do well, mentally stroking your own ego until it has forgotten this horrible episode of unawesomeness and moved on to something more satisfying.
When you think about it, this doesnt exactly sound like a recipe for success, does it? Indeed, recent reviews of the research on high self-esteem have come to the troubling conclusion that its not all its cracked up to be. High self-esteem does not predict better performance or greater success. And though people with high self-esteem do think theyre more successful, objectively, they are not. High self-esteem does not make you a more effective leader, a more appealing lover, more likely to lead a healthy lifestyle, or more attractive and compelling in an interview. But if Stuart Smalley is wrong, and high self-esteem (along with daily affirmations of your own terrificness) is not the answer to all your problems, then what is?
A growing body of research, including new studies by Berkeleys Juliana Breines and Serena Chen, suggest that self-compassion, rather than self-esteem, may be the key to unlocking your true potential for greatness. Now, I know that some of you are already sceptical about a term like self-compassion. But this is a scientific, data-driven argument not feel-good pop psychology. So hang in there and keep an open mind.
Self-compassion is a willingness to look at your own mistakes and shortcomings with kindness and understanding its embracing the fact that to err is indeed human. When you are self-compassionate in the face of difficulty, you neither judge yourself harshly, nor feel the need to defensively focus on all your awesome qualities to protect your ego. Its not surprising that self-compassion leads, as many studies show, to higher levels of personal well-being, optimism and happiness, and to less anxiety and depression.
But what about performance? Self-compassion may feel good, but arent the people who are harder on themselves, who are driven to always be the best, the ones who are ultimately more likely to succeed?
To answer that, its important to understand what self-compassion is not. While the spirit of self-compassion is to some degree captured in expressions like give yourself a break and cut yourself some slack, it is decidedly not the same thing as taking yourself off the hook or lowering the bar. You can be self-compassionate while still accepting responsibility for your performance. And you can be self-compassionate while striving for the most challenging goals the difference lies not in where you want to end up, but in how you think about the ups and downs of your journey. As a matter of fact, if you are self-compassionate, new research suggests you are more likely to actually arrive at your destination.
In their studies, Brienes and Chen asked participants to take either a self-compassionate or self-esteem enhancing view of a setback or failure. For example, when asked to reflect on a personal weakness, some were asked to imagine that you are talking to yourself about this weakness from a compassionate and understanding perspective. What would you say?
