Nonprofit Universities Bring Brand Recognition to Online Education

BOSTON, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --The growing presence of nonprofit universities in online education has ignited unprecedented competition for students who once could choose predominantly among for-profit programs. For the first time a school's brand and its presumed influence in the job market is a competitive differentiator for applicants, according to new paper from The Parthenon Group's Education Practice.
The bread and butter of for-profit online universities such as American Public, Bridgepoint, Capella and the two giants Phoenix and DeVry is the working adult population. Not surprisingly, the top priority of this demographic is to improve career prospects, and The Parthenon Group found that for the first time students are willing to pay a premium of as much as $5,000 to get a degree from a high-profile, nonprofit institution that might abet this goal.
"Competition for students is escalating rapidly between the for-profit and nonprofit sectors," says Chris Ross, a partner in the firm's Education Practice and author of the paper. "You can say the nonprofits, including well-known public universities, have been the sleeping giants. As they scale up in online education, they are moving aggressively into what's been the sole domain of for-profit educators."
Currently, there are 11 nonprofit universities with online enrollments of over 10,000 students and several have surpassed 20,000. Additionally, brand-name schools such as Arizona State University, Boston University, Purdue and the University of Notre Dame are jumping into the market.
The financial stakes are high for the nonprofits and so are the market opportunities. Apollo, the largest for-profit educational corporation, enrolls more students than the 10 largest nonprofit institutions combined. The overall for-profit educational enrollment is approximately 2.5 million, which is double the share from back in 2001.
Moreover, nonprofits for the most part are broadening, as opposed to cannibalizing, their own enrollment market by pushing into online education. "Not only are most online students working, they are older than the typical college enrollee who is aged 18-to-24 and living as a dependent," says Ross.
To date, nearly all nonprofit players in the online market have been inclusive schools that accept most applicants. Selective universities, which make up the preponderance of the 18 million annual post-secondary college enrollment, represent less than 20 percent of online enrollments though the number is growing rapidly.
"They are able to scale up quickly by partnering with online education-services companies like Embanet, Bisk, Deltak and Pearson that offer a full value chain of services that goes well beyond course development," explains Ross. "These services can include innovative recruiting/marketing techniques, processes and student response times that are quite different from traditional nonprofit strategies and are definite competitive strengths."
Competing for Students Across Brand, Price and OutcomeIn the paper, Are the sleeping giants awake? Nonprofit universities enter online education at scale, Ross says all post-secondary institutions will soon compete across brand, price and outcome in new and different ways. For both for-profit and nonprofit sectors Ross sees top-line growth being fueled by three new market "drivers:"
Scale at the degree/program level. Today's applicants consider program first, but as online programs continue to scale, these students will gravitate toward the largest and best-known programs. Program-specific enrollments are the new metric of success.

What: Zumba is a fitness dance party. Its a fun, high-energy workout with roots in aerobics, salsa, and street dance.
The rundown: Class starts with a warm-up then plunges through a playlist of upbeat latin and pop music with different choreography for each track, working different parts of the body. Although its fast, theres lots of repetition involved, aligned to the verse and chorus of the songs, so you soon conquer the choreography. Your instructor will go through the basics before each track but following their lead is easy and it doesnt matter if you go wrong. Just keep moving, keep sweating, keep smiling and youll pick it up again.
Is it the right fit for you? Zumba really is for anyone. Even men.
The class we tried takes place in a local school hall where there are no mirrors to worry about, and nobody cares if you go wrong. The class is attended by a regular bunch aged from late teens to later life and each works to their own ability. Theres always an easier version of the moves to try if the choreography gets a bit tricky or the arms are confusing but no one gets singled out. Its evident that everyone has fun and theres a social side to classes, with breaks for water and gossip. Our instructor, Kendra, buzzes with energy, makes the class laugh, throws in mosh pit moments and makes everyone feel welcome and included.
Oh, and you burn loads of calories and tone up with all that arm waving, hip wiggling and bouncing about.
Where and when: There are over 1,000 Zumba classes to try across London each week at sports centres and in community venues so you will be able to find a class local to you. Classes cost just 5-6 for a 45-60 minute class and instructors often offer loyalty cards.
We tried and paid for classes with Kendra McMillan at Bounds Green School which cost 5.

Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens is happy with the Australia line-up, despite several big names being unavailable due to injury.
THEY are known as league's hardest men yet the Kiwis hope Bikram Yoga will be their secret weapon when they face Australia in tropical Townsville next week.
In a locked room sweltering with 40C heat, Kiwi stars such as halfback Shaun Johnson and captain Simon Mannering last week contorted their bodies into the "Eagle", "Half Tortoise" and "Wind Removing Pose".
Bikram Yoga is a 90-minute stretching routine consisting of 26 poses and two breathing exercises in a hot room. The Auckland session left the Kiwi training group light-headed and in awe of their instructor.
The unique drill was the brainchild of Kiwi league legend-turned team trainer Ruben Wiki, who said it was one of the toughest exercises he had done.
Kasiano named for Kiwis
Not content with stretching the players to their limits, Wiki sent the group back to the Auckland yoga studio two days later to do traditional footy drills - still in 40C heat.
"Yoga is tough bro," Wiki said.

We've all heard the term "the yoga butt!" It's the perfect perk backside of yoga-practicing gals that is a status symbol in the yoga world (and beyond).
Now, the coveted yoga butt is taking a back seat to the yoga core - firm, toned abs that are the envy of all on and off the mat. I am starting to seethe just thinking about those flat-bellied ladies in my class.

Well, help is on the way. Yoga guru Rodney Yee has created Gaiam's Core Centered Yoga DVD. He and his wife, Colleen Saidman, both of whom are rock stars in the yoga world, invited Healthy Hollywood to sample a few of their core-centric moves. Let's just say I was off and running to my mat before the word "ready."
"When we are looking at core-centered yoga, it's not only a different take on yoga, but it really is a different take on how we look at the core," reveals Rodney to Healthy Hollywood. "A lot of people in this society just want that six-pack, but in fact the core houses the vital organs. It is also the aspect of the lower back where a lot of us have problems. So not only does the core have to be strong, but it has to be fluid and coordinated with the legs and arms and these are things that haven't been considered," Yee adds.

First of all, Yee's approach to a better core isn't a series of fast-paced yoga poses. Most of the abs movement he showed the class were slow and deliberate and really got you tuned into feeling your abdominals. "To build strength you need movement. So, it's not just holding a pose. It's more about micro-movements during a pose. We want to be in sync with the core to build strength through fluid alignment and mindfulness."
A few of Yee's favorite core-building yoga moves are the boat pose, side bends and backbends. But, his wife, Colleen believes a simple mountain pose (stand with big toes touching, weight evenly balance on both feet and hang arms by your side) is a great core conditioner. "If you stand in mountain pose and take thumbs to armpit and lift front of the arm pits and chest. Be sure to engage tailbone, the abs and you get the back bone and the length of the waist and just stand there with that kind of integrity could be your one shot deal."

Celebrate Milestones

The other day I looked at the dates of my early postings. I was late some weeks, posting after eight or nine days, then Id catch up by posting every five days. By my one-year anniversary, I had my act together and began posting every Monday without fail. Sometimes Id post at 11:35 pm, but I always made it. Last year I established a concrete deadline where I post by 3:00 every Monday afternoon. Currently, Im ahead of schedule, writing and then posting articles to appear at a later date.
Ive come a long way.
Accomplishing worthwhile goals isnt easy. Along the way to achieving what you seek, there may be complications. One can get easily discouraged and wonder why they decided to pursue the track they chose to follow in the first place. One-year anniversaries dont mean much to me. One year could be a fluke, but not seven. A seven-year commitment doesnt happen by accident. Spending hours on end searching for books. Interviewing experts and examining my own life for hidden lessons. Writing and writing and writing. Fighting with articles that just wouldnt work. Abandoning some, only to revive them later.
Its been a journey.
Another thing I discovered through this practice was that my fears of stopping to celebrate would result in settling or lack of motivation to move forward were unfounded. Quite the opposite resulted.
