Retirement roadblocks mount for many

Posted: at 4:19 pm

Bob Andres - MCT

Denise McColister, 55, of Georgia says a retirement that was on track 10 years ago was derailed by an unexpected disability, job loss and erosion of her homes value.

ATLANTA -- A decade ago, Denise McColister envisioned a comfortable retirement around the time she turned 62.

At 45, I felt really secure, the Dallas resident, now 55, recalled. Back then, her husband made good money, and their house was paid for.

Then he became disabled and their house, which they had borrowed against, plummeted in value. Now, instead of padding her financial cushion, shes working a part-time call center job while hoping for a better position. Theres no retirement in sight.

Ill probably be working until Im called home, she said.

Many Americans have had to adjust their retirement dreams since the recession and housing bust. For some, like McColister, the question is whether they can ever retire.

Over 55? Retirement iffy

A study by the Employee Benefit Research Institute determined that 1 in 3 households headed by people now age 55 to 64 wont be financially prepared to retire even by age 70. Lower-income people face the biggest problem.

Its generally accepted that the effects of layoffs, flat-lined pay, declining property values and a turbulent stock market have eroded wealth to the point where many can no longer expect to stop working when theyre 65 let alone earlier.

Entrepreneur has designs on success

PHIL DOYLE/Fairfax NZ

IN THE BLOOD: "My parents have always had their own businesses and together as a family we have another two businesses over and above Spaceworks," says Lizzi Hines.

As a single 28-year old mum, with no assets, and living with her parents, Lizzi Hines took a massive leap of faith when she bought an office design agency in 2006.

Many straight-backed accountants would advise strongly against such a move. Hines' accountant did, and her lawyer. Cash is king when starting or buying a business, right?

Not according to Hines. As a junior designer at Auckland-based Spaceworks she knew "in her gut" she was making the right move to buy the business and had the backing of the company's founder.

More to the point she had the support of her number one advisers - her parents, a lawyer and an accountant. It took a month of selling her business proposition every day at the bank, for them to finally lend her the money.

Hine's parents were overseas on a cruise in Europe during the bank negotiations. "They tell this story of waking up every morning and turning on their phone and hearing beep, beep, beep with all my crazy emails and texts," she laughs.

Fast-forward six years; Spaceworks has not only survived the recession, through diversifying its client base to other industries, but in the past two years has doubled turnover each year.

The company provides services throughout the country, and has also completed projects in Australia and the South Pacific, where it eventually wants to have permanent hubs.

Why did you become an entrepreneur?

Orioles have had success against Yankees ace C.C. Sabathia

Posted: at 4:18 pm

The Orioles know that C.C. Sabathia is one of the best pitchers in the game, but they have to be going into Sundays American League Division Series opener confident given their success against the Yankees left-hander this season.

Sabathia is winless in three starts with a 6.38 ERA against the Orioles this season, with Baltimore winning those last two starts. Hes allowed at least four runs in each of those outings and hasnt lasted more than 6 1/3 innings in any of those starts.

The Orioles are hitting .312 off Sabathia this season, the highest average of any American League team.

Just with me it's just command, starting with fastball command, Sabathia said Saturday. They have a great lineup, and I've faced these guys a lot, and they know what I am trying to do. It's just up to me to go out and execute pitches, and you know, make sure I keep the ball down and get the ball in where I need to and go out and make pitches.

Granted, Sabathia is 16-4 with a 3.12 ERA in his career against the Orioles, but combine this years success against Sabathia with his recent postseason struggles and the Os can afford to be optimisitc.

Why are they here?" Sabathia said. I mean, it's a good team. Adam Jones has gotten a lot better, obviously. Mark Reynolds has gotten adjusted to the American League and is swinging the bat well. Wieters has gotten better over the years, so they've just gotten a bunch of talented guys that have gotten a lot better and they've made it tough on me. Hopefully [Sunday] night, like I said, I can go out and command the baseball like I want to and make pitches and be successful.

Sabathia pitched to a 6.23 ERA in last years American League Division Series, which the Tigers won in five games. Dating back to the 2010 postseason, Sabathia has a 5.84 ERA.

As far as CC, I don't think you can make too much of last year just because of the way the schedule was, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. We started a game and stopped it, and then he came back on short rest, so I don't really make too much of that.. He's pitched pretty well for the most part.

Aerobics group accelerates towards the world stage

Posted: at 3:24 pm

Oct. 8, 2012, midnight

Accelerate team members (back from left) Sophie Bellman, Tiarna Drake, Sarah Hill, Gaby Carty; (middle) Emily Lacey, Samantha Stewart, Stephanie Umbers and (front) Aylish Auchettl try out their new uniforms.

THE countdown is on for a Warrnambool aerobics combination ready to test itself on the world stage.

EKB Fitness and Aerobics Accelerate team members received their Australian uniforms at a presentation on Saturday.

They will fly to the Netherlands on Thursday for the world championships.

Coach Emma Bellman said her eight-member junior fitness teams preparation had been flawless.

I watched their nationals routine yesterday and got a mum to film their routine yesterday, she said.

They have improved since nationals in such a short amount of time.

Making finals (at worlds) is reasonable.

Bellman said the teenage team had worked diligently fine-tuning its routine and building its fitness base. Every day except Wednesdays theyve had some sort of training, she said.

Schaumburg's Rizzo hoping to run personal best

Posted: at 1:19 am

Schaumburg native Patrick Rizzo will be one of the elite athletes in the hunt during Sundays Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

He knows he wont be pushing the lead pace with the Kenyans and others who have clocked in blazing marathon times. But thats OK with Rizzo as hes OK with his steady-as-it-goes approach. Sundays race will be his eighth marathon overall and fourth in Chicago. He looks to continue his progress and set a new personal record.

Anyone who has ever gotten to compete against me knows I am not a very fast runner, Rizzo said. Thankfully I dont need to run very fast in a marathon. I just need to outlast people.

And outlast people Rizzo has. His personal best of 2:13:42 is certainly impressive as far as marathon times go. He clocked that at his most recent marathon the U.S. Olympics Trials in Houston on Jan. 14, 2012 where he finished 13th overall.

In that race, he strategized with his coach Brad Hudson to run conservatively in the first half and left enough in the tank to pick off runners in the second part. At the halfway point, he was in about the top 50, then ran one of the fastest half marathons among the field to climb the charts. He ran nearly even splits 1:06:52 in the first half and 1:06:50 in the second.

Rizzo was thrilled with his performance.

To go (somewhere) from 40th to 50th place at halfway and to finish at 13 was what I thought I would do, Rizzo said. To actually accomplish everything and execute it to a T is such a feeling of triumph. You can prepare for it every time. Preparation can sometimes go flawlessly. The race day does not always collaborate.

The success Rizzo had in his last race will provide momentum for Sundays showdown against some of the fastest runners in the world. Chicago Marathon Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski calls the field the deepest ever weve had in Chicago and notes he has gone back to the marathon roots by bringing in athletes with impressive track credentials.

Ethiopias Tsegaye Kebede (2:05:18) will be a top contender along with Wesley Korir (2:06:15) of Kenya, who won the 2012 Boston Marathon. Kenyas Levy Matebo is the fastest entrant in the field, with a 2:05:16 performance at the 2011 Frankfurt Marathon. Three-time U.S. Olympian Dathan Ritzenhein (2:09:55) is someone to watch as well.

On the womens side, Russian Liliya Shobukhova looks to capture her unprecedented fourth consecutive Chicago Marathon. She ran the third-fastest time in history (2:18:20) to win last years race. Kenyas Lucy Kabuu (2:19:34) and Atsede Baysa (2:22:04) of Ethiopia will push her. The top female American runner is Dot McMahan (2:31:48).
