MSNBC host Chris Matthews joined Tamron Hall on MSNBC on Thursday where he reiterated his case against President Barack Obamas first debate performance and offered his view of how his vice president could make up for lost ground. Matthews went after the president for not defending his personal views, which he claimed serve as the basis for legislation the president pursued over his first term like health care reform and the auto industry bailout. Matthews implored Vice President Joe Biden to focus on his philosophical differences with GOP vice presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) over substantive differences on various individual policies.

After introducing Matthews and calling his reaction to Obama lackluster debate performance legendary, Hall asked what Matthews felt should be the goal for Biden in tonights vice presidential debate.
What bothers me is the Democratic side in this case the president and the vice president they have not fought the big fight, said Matthews. There are real, drastic differences between these two parties on the big issues.
The president supports health care. He enacted it into law against all kinds of Republican opposition. The position of the challenger, of Mitt Romney as of this day, is to throw them in the emergency room. Put them in the emergency room. Let them wait. Take them out of their apartments, as he puts it. He assumes all people without health insurance live in apartments.
Mathews went on to define positions that Obama holds which he failed to defend in the first debate.
When it comes to issues like the auto industry his position was bankruptcy, Obama was rescue, said Matthews. These are drastic differences.
People on Medicare and Social Security the Romney position is these people dont want to take personal responsibility for their lives. The president says lets support health care, Matthews went on.
Matthews said Ryan has similar personal values he believe are not shared by the bulk of the American people. This character, Paul Ryan, he supports personhood, said Matthews. He wants to give the fertilized egg a second after conception property rights property rights which would probably create a criminalization situation for the mother.

Biden, Ryan get personal in debate
Posted: at 7:25 am
Both men were assertive from the outset, a reflection of the closeness of the presidential race just weeks before the election, each eager to trumpet the strengths of his ticket and equally zealous in ripping the other party.
Biden was aggressive, hoping to make up for President Barack Obamas tepid performance in his opening debate last week against Republican nominee Mitt Romney, a performance that reset the race and thrust the Republicans back into contention. Pressing to make his points, Biden at times raised his voice and jabbed his finger at moderator Martha Raddatz of ABC News.
Ryan was more measured, often lowering his voice after Biden. A fresh-faced congressman who had never debated on the national stage despite his 14 years in the House, Ryan betrayed no signs of nervousness about the showdown with Biden.
Debates by vice presidential candidates usually have little effect on elections, but Thursdays took on added significance after Obamas lackluster debate debut on Oct. 3.
Since then, Romney has pulled even with Obama in national polls and closed the gap in several battleground states.
In Florida, Romney opened up a 7 point lead, according to a new Tampa Bay Times/Bay News 9/Miami Herald poll. Obama has a 1 percentage point edge over Romney in a new NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll of likely voters, released Thursday. The margin was the same as before the Obama-Romney debate. In Ohio, Obama leads by 6 points. He had led by 8. And in Virginia, Obama was up 2, but Romney is now ahead by 1.
In their sole debate, Biden and Ryan sparred repeatedly on domestic policies such as Medicare and taxes, as well as foreign policy questions such as the attack in Libya that led to the deaths of four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador.
Most covered the same ground as Obama and Romney. It was in their personal exchanges that they shed new light on the two major party tickets and their policies.
Both Irish Roman Catholics, Biden and Ryan spoke about how their religion drives their different positions on abortion.
Our faith informs us in every thing we do, Ryan said. He added that science also plays a role in his opposition to abortion rights in most cases, saying he and his wife were touched by the ultrasound image of their unborn first child.

Fiery Biden-Ryan debate turns personal

DANVILLE, Ky. -- Vice President Joe Biden and Republican rival Paul Ryan sparred Thursday in often personal terms that exposed their passions and core beliefs over the role of their faith, families, and deeply held views about the role of government in American life and foreign policy.
Both men were assertive from the outset, a reflection of the closeness of the presidential race just weeks before the election, each eager to trumpet the strengths of their tickets and equally zealous in ripping the other party.

Ryan was more measured, often lowering his voice after Biden. A fresh-faced congressman who had never debated on the national stage despite his 14 years in the House of Representatives, Ryan betrayed no signs of nervousness about the showdown with Biden.
Usually an afterthought with little impact on the race, the only such meeting between the No. 2s on their respective tickets took on added significance after the initial presidential face-off last week and Obamas negative reviews Oct. 3.
Since then, Romney has pulled even with Obama in national polls and closed the gap in several battleground states.

Joe Kernan: Success built on hunger games
Posted: at 7:25 am
The pursuit of superb physical fitness, high-level conditioning and supreme pace are goals which are shared by coaches and trainers up and down the country.
Whether it is at school, university, club or county level, the desire to parade teams that are the embodiment of these three qualities is ongoing for the greater part of the year.
The days of lapping playing-fields, engaging in rather meaningless practice games and performing only the most basic of physical exercises are long gone.
Instead, detailed fitness programmes are diligently prepared and followed rigidly both on an individual and collective basis.
Yet there is one other attribute that is absolutely necessary if real progress is to be achieved and that is hunger.
A teams appetite for success can be quickly gauged from players body language during games and often opponents, sensing chinks in their armour in this context, can overpower them without necessarily playing with greater poise and panache.
Hunger has been clearly rampant on more than one front this year.
Cork revealed a high-intensity attitude during the National League to collect their third title on the trot, while Donegal underlined their yearning to be eventually regarded as a great team and not just a good team by winning back to back Ulster titles.
Perhaps the greatest level of hunger was exhibited by Kilkenny both as a unit and on an individual front.
I cannot think of any player in any code who best encapsulated the real meaning of hunger this year than Noel Hickey (pictured).

Students programme set to welcome second batch
Staff Reporter / 12 October 2012
The Hamdan bin Mohammed Students Personal Development Programme, launched in September 2011 under the patronage and directives of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, has begun arrangements for receiving the second batch of students.
The programme held a familiarisation meeting attended by delegations from the government and private schools in Dubai and parents of the students who took admission in the programme. The meeting provided a general idea about the programme, and discussed its objectives and stages of execution.
It also reviewed the achievements made by the first batch by eliciting the views and opinions of the students, schools and parents.
A large section of the attendees pointed out that the programme has helped the students in determining their professional career, and has had a positive impact on their academic performance.
The team tasked with the programme, which comprises the Secretariat General of the Dubai Executive Council, Department of Human Resources, Dubai Government, Knowledge and Human Resources Development Authority and Dubai Educational Zone, are currently working on completing all the arrangements for receiving the second batch of students.
The preparations include naming the schools and students, and conducting awareness seminars for schools and for the voluntary graduates of the Mohammed bin Rashid Programme for Leadership Development to encourage them to voluntarily participate in training the students on future professional planning. The programme will also follow up with the schools whose students were part of the first batch, and who will comply with the requirements of the programme for the next two years.
We are keen on creating a supportive environment to assist students so that they can benefit from the programme, said Abdulla Al Shaibani, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council.
He said: We cooperate with all our partners in government and public sectors as well as schools to achieve the cherished objectives which serve to develop the education sector in Dubai, and are working to welcome the second batch of students. The programme reflects the interest and keenness of Shaikh Hamdan in supporting the students of our country.

Continuing Education Provider Professional Development Resources Partners with The National Psychologist on New Online …
Posted: at 7:23 am
Professional Development Resources has announced a new partnership venture with The National Psychologist the Independent Newspaper for Practitioners to publish a series of new online continuing education courses that will offer a variety of brief clinical psychotherapy tips.
Jacksonville, Florida (PRWEB) October 12, 2012
The National Psychologist is an independent newspaper that circulates bimonthly to almost 30,000 practicing psychologists and graduate psychology students.
The first two online courses in the series, which were published this week on the Professional Development Resources website, are titled Psychotherapy Practice Tips, Part 1 and Psychotherapy Practice Tips, Part 2.
These new courses are designed to appeal to busy clinicians across mental health disciplines, who find it convenient to keep up their clinical skills by reading brief articles between sessions or during down time. The time-saving advantage of being able to read a large number of clinical articles in a very short time is important to most psychologists and other mental health professionals, who are required by their licensing laws to complete a designated number of continuing education credits each year.
The courses are very dense, says Leo Christie, PhD, president of Professional Development Resources. They each include 14 or 15 different clinical topics in the form of archived articles from recent issues of The National Psychologist. What is new and different about these courses is that they deliver a great deal of timely information in an easy-to-read format. The topic selection runs the gamut, including tips for treating complex post-traumatic stress disorder, coping with violent patients, the psychological impact of hearing loss, Internet pornography addiction, and more. Busy clinicians should be able to complete these courses online in two hours or less.
The two companies which are coincidentally celebrating their 20th birthdays in 2012 have had a working relationship since 2001, when The National Psychologist (TNP) first contracted with Professional Development Resources to cosponsor the TNP Quiz, which is featured in every issue and awards one hour of CE to those who read the issue and successfully complete the quiz. The relationship has worked and has led from continuing to cosponsor the quiz to the cooperative publication of other CE courses on ethics and risk management in psychotherapy practice.
At the start, all we did was work together on the quiz, says Christie. After a couple of years, Martin Saeman, managing editor of TNP, came up with the idea of creating CE courses based on some of the articles that appeared in the publication. We started out with selected ethics articles, later added risk management topics, and the rest is history. It has been a natural and comfortable alliance.
"The relationship between The National Psychologist and Professional Development Resources has been a good one from the beginning. These latest two new courses simply add a new 'clinical' component to our online CE offerings. Our goal has always been to provide our readers with news and information in an unbiased fashion much of which is not found in similar publications. This alliance is just an extension of this goal," says Saeman.
The two companies plan further cooperative courses including more ethics and risk management courses as well as possibly branching out into other topic groups, including technology and practice building.
EHS associate dean candidate Elizabeth Kirby: Online education, international involvement key in success
Posted: at 7:23 am
College of Education and Human Services associate dean candidate Elizabeth Kirby said Thursday online education and international collaboration are key in strengthening Central Michigan Universitys teacher education program.
Kirby, chairwoman of education leadership,is one of two candidates for the position and spoke to more than 30 people at an open forum in the EHS building. The associate dean will be responsible for supporting the dean with anything regarding the college, including curriculum, budgeting and the development of faculty.
Through my career and my life, my focus has been education, she said. This opportunity to utilize my skills and strengths is extremely appealing.
The future of the programs online classes were quickly addressed.
Weve talked about this, weve looked at this and weve felt a serious intention to creating the biggest capacity we could to deliver education anytime, anywhere and also being able to be portable and flexible, Kirby said.
She said the losses in teachers and students in Michigan would force the department to look at what could be offered online.
Weve lost 1,100 teachers in Michigan the past few years and weve lost 50,000 students. That all plays its way upward in terms of who is going to come to CMU, Kirby said. The competition is immense. In essence, we want to be competitive and we want to attract audiences inside Michigan and outside.
In terms of international involvement, Kirby is working on bringing Chinese teachers to campus in hopes of bringing them back for a summer program.
I think globally that outreach is important and the relationships will only strengthen the college, Kirby said.
Kirby also spoke about her scholarly works and how it is important for leaders to continue to learn.
