Family Council advocates for positive change

Posted: October 12, 2012 at 11:17 pm

The St. Josephs Villa Family Council is hosting its second Interactive Forum focused on Personal Support Workers A Cornerstone to Long Term Care Success, on Thursday, Oct. 18, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Josephs Villa Long Term Care Facility in Dundas.

The forum will be of special interest to family members who have loved ones in long-term care facilities, health professionals, long-term care workers and educators, and the public at large.

The forum will deal with the role, training and expectations of personal support workers in long-term care facilities. Knowledgeable speakers from education, health care and labour will present various points of view concerning consistency in standards, training and the certification and registry of front-line workers. Audience questions will also be addressed.

Peter Gnish, chair of the St. Josephs Villa Family Council, stressed the urgency for all sectors to work together to make long-term care in Ontario the best it can be.

Since 2008, the provincial government has provided funding for only 2.8 paid hours of care per resident per day in long-term care, he said.

They promised to increase that to four hours by 2012. This still has not been done and creates great strains on the PSWs and the care they can offer. We believe that the only way the current problems in our long-term care facilities can be improved is if the government keeps its promise, as well as working to establish a licensing body, such as a college, to develop a process of registration, accreditation and certification for all personal support workers.

To register as a participant in the forum contact Gnish at 905-547-1628 or pgnish@cogeco.ca.

Good Things Come in Small Packages

The first thought which comes to my mind when I hear the phrase Good things come in small packages is the iPad Mini. Just like every other fan, Im eagerly waiting for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to launch the younger sibling of the superbly designed iPad. The web is flooded with leaked photos of the Mini and even the rumor mill has started rolling. According to the latest rumors, the device can be expected to hit the streets sometime in late October, just ahead of the biggest holiday season of the year.

Though many analysts are suggesting that iPad Mini will not face much success and will be a pointless device, I beg to differ. I believe the iPad Mini will be a huge hit and will repeat the success story of the iPad. The following are some of the reasons that explain why I feel the Mini will be good for Apple.

A brilliant growth strategy

The iPad is not a new-to-the-market product anymore. Tablets have gained huge acceptance worldwide and needless to say, the iPad is the undisputed champion in the space. So, how can Apple carry on with expanding the iPad user base? The answer lies in the Ansoffs Matrix, a hugely popular tool among corporate strategists. Igor Ansoff, also known as the Father of Strategic Management, presented this matrix to present alternative corporate growth strategies by establishing links between products and markets. The following is the image of the matrix.

According to the matrix, if the product is an existing one and even the market is an existing one, corporations must aim at market penetration as that would be the best strategy to expand. Apple is doing exactly what Igor suggested. By introducing a smaller iPad, Apple is attempting to target a different stratum of the consumer market and thus increase its overall market share. Initially, under the leadership of Steve Jobs, Apple was hesitant about the need of smaller tablets. However, after the recent success of 7-inch tablets from peers such as Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), Apple has realized that there is a market for the smaller device and now aims to harness the benefits of the same.

Huge market waiting for the Mini

ARU chief exits confident of future success

''I think the best is yet to come'' ... John O'Neill. Photo: Getty Images

AS JOHN O'NEILL announced a farewell to the Australian Rugby Union yesterday, much was made of his ability to leave the sport in better shape than when he took over.

Where he will leave Australian rugby is not where he had hoped, but it is not far away either. As he admitted: ''Not where we'd like to be, but I think the best is yet to come.''

Whether that future includes Wallabies coach Robbie Deans remains to be seen. The ARU will not only lose one of Australian sport's most recognised and formidable administrators, when O'Neill leaves later this month, but also one of Deans's staunchest allies.

With O'Neill due to retire as chief executive and managing director, after two stints and a total of 14 years, Deans's future will be further clouded. O'Neill was instrumental in Deans re-signing last year.

In typical style, O'Neill defended that decision yesterday, as he was asked whether it had been a mistake.

''He was given a two-year extension, and as with every employee, is subject to regular reviews,'' he said. ''The board conducts that review. The board's pretty well-equipped to do that, with four former Wallabies, including the chairman, John Eales, Brett Robinson and George Gregan.''

ARU chairman Michael Hawker was quick to back Deans too.

''We're very comfortable with Robbie Deans,'' Hawker said. ''I'd just like to put Robbie Deans's performance in context as well.

Adventure WV fosters inclusiveness

Posted: at 11:16 pm

Adventure WV is a program that provides students with experiential education, leadership experience and personal development through travel programs.

For Adventure WV Program Manager Marcedes Minana, the program provides college students with something priceless.

"We foster belongingness, and that is huge," she said. "We really are a family."

Originally a freshman orientation program, Adventure WV since expanded and now offers everything from week-long local trips to month-long study-abroad programs.

Incoming freshmen have the opportunity to take an orientation trip: a week-long camping excursion throughout West Virginia. The trip is linked with a course, and major-specific trips are offered for students in the School of Journalism and the College of Business and Economics.

But according to Minana, these trips arent just about traveling they help students grow.

"Its about learning about the University, learning about this state, because this is your home," she said. "This is your back yard."

Minana said sometimes, incoming freshmen have no friends or mentors at WVU.

"For most incoming students, one of the biggest concerns coming into college is am I going to make friends? Am I going to fit in?" she said.

The Orientation Trips bring these students together and help them connect, Minana said.

Her Excellency Yingluck Shinawatra, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand will be the guest of honor and will be presenting the awards to organizations on the evening of October 26, 2012.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Shinawatra confirmed her government's commitment to working with the private sector in building a society of good governance and social responsibility, with plans to support health and wellness, tourism and education in the region.

This dovetails with many Thai companies represented in the conference who have a strong CSR strategy; some of whom are Bangkok Bank, Double A (1991) PCL, Mitr Phol Sugar Corp., and The Siam Cement PCL.

Since 2003, the Asian CSR Awards Program has been recognizing and honoring Asian companies for embodying the principles of corporate responsibility in their business philosophy and operations. The awards seek to identify, honor, and provide role models of best practices for other companies. It is presented by the Asian Institute of Management - Ramon V. del Rosario, Sr. Center for Corporate Social Responsibility (AIM-RVR) and Intel Corporation.

This year's Asian CSR Awards saw the submission of more than 300 programs from 88 companies and 13 countries. Awards will be given in the focus areas of Value Chain Management, Governance and Society, Labor and Employee Engagement, and Product Responsibility and Consumer Rights. The Intel-AIM Corporate Responsibility Award (IACRA) will be given to the company that has taken a fully-embedded approach to corporate social responsibility across all the four focus areas and has implemented projects that have a significant impact and are sustainable in all appropriate areas of operations. The winners will be announced on October 26 at the awarding ceremonies at the Shangri-La Hotel.

Web Exclusive: Yoga controversy in schools

Posted: at 5:17 pm

(CNN/KSWB) -Yoga is now part of the curriculum at a California elementary school. But, not everyone is joining in on the yoga.

"You can watch me first just so you guys all know what to do?" said Kristen McCloskey.

It's last period at Encinitas Op Elementary. Balance, flexibility and strength are the lessons of the day. The yoga class is one of many being offered across the Encinitas School District thanks to a private grant from the Jois Foundation, an Encinitas based group that promotes the practice of yoga.

District officials say it's all part of a larger initiative to help students be more healthy and active. School officials say they've received overwhelming approval from parents, but not everyone is happy. Some parents have asked their children be taken out of the yoga lessons, claiming the practice of is a course in Hinduism. "We're really hoping this will help the kids feel more focused when they're in the classroom," says McCloskey.

Kristen McCloskey is the yoga instructor at the school. She's been practicing yoga for 13 years and says while the roots of the exercise is spiritual; the class is anything but. "Yes, the roots of Yoga is based in Hinduism; however, we as Americans have really brought it into our culture to gain the actual physical and mental benefits of it. It is purely the physical and the mental benefits that we're trying to convey to the children," says McCloskey.

For now, district officials are confident the benefits will outweigh the criticism. "We believe the yoga program will actually have academic benefits and in fact there is research out there that show that," says Tim Baird, Encinitas School DistrictSuperintendent.

Parents who oppose the yoga class say they just wish the time, effort and money were invested in other subjects like math and science.

Posted: at 7:26 am

RALEIGH, NC--(Marketwire - Oct 11, 2012) - Valencell, an innovator in mobile health and fitness technology, today announced a partnership with Samsin, Innotec Co., Ltd., a Korea-based leading headset contract manufacturer for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Samsin is now an approved contract manufacturer of earbuds powered by PerformTek sensor technology.

This relationship enables licensees of Valencell's patented sensor technology to use Samsin as their contract manufacturer and accelerate their time to market. Samsin will help Valencell's licensees design, develop, test and manufacture their products.

Valencell executives will demonstrate PerformTek Precision Biometrics during the Hong Kong Electronics Fair in Samsin's booth #5B-F24. The Electronics Fair runs October 13-16 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center.

PerformTek Precision Biometrics captures accurate health/fitness data -- such as heart rate, speed, distance, pace, cadence, calories burned and VO2 max (aerobic fitness) and uses these metrics to provide meaningful fitness assessments. The technology seamlessly integrates into audio earbuds and smartphone apps people are already using while exercising. PerformTek continuously measures more real-time biometric and physiological data than any other fitness monitors with high accuracy and consistency.

"The industry has been waiting for a way to seamlessly measure fitness and performance metrics through devices people already wear during exercise. This new partnership with Samsin Innotech will accelerate the time-to-market for PerformTek licensees," said Dr. Steven LeBoeuf, co-founder and CEO of Valencell.

Samsin, the first headset manufacturing company in South Korea, makes products for many brand name OEMs. The company has a long history in the industry and is experienced with both Bluetooth and wired technology. Recently Samsin developed Valencell's own prototypes.

"For nearly 40 years we've provided headset contract manufacturing solutions for companies worldwide. Valencell has developed a breakthrough technology in this industry and we're pleased to be the approved and preferred CM for PerformTek Precision Biometrics," said S.K. Kim, CEO of Samsin, Innotec Co., Ltd.

In addition to earbuds, other form factors that utilize PerformTek Precision Biometrics, such as arm bands and wrist devices, are on the horizon. Attendees at the Electronics Fair interested in learning more about licensing Valencell's technology should contact info@valencell.com.

The Hong Kong Electronics Fair attracts attendees from around the globe and presents various electronics products and services, such as audio-visual products, navigation systems, telecommunications products and testing, inspection and certification services.

About Valencell Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, Valencell develops wearable fitness monitoring technology and licenses this technology to consumer electronics manufacturers, mobile device and accessory makers, and sports and fitness brands for integration into their products. Valencell's PerformTek sensor technology seamlessly integrates into audio earbuds and connects with smartphone apps people are already using while exercising. Ó Caoláin casts doubt over fitness of our Minister for Health

Posted: at 7:26 am

The Irish Times - Friday, October 12, 2012

MICHAEL O'REGAN

DIL SKETCH:REFERENCES TO Minister for Health Dr James Reilly are never far from Dil proceedings these days. The same applies to his would-be nemesis, former minister of State Risn Shortall.

Yesterday, she was in the chamber for Opposition Leaders Questions, which were taken by Tnaiste and Labour leader Eamon Gilmore.

She sat next to fellow Dublin TD Tommy Broughan, an ideological soulmate who, like herself, is without the Labour whip these days. While they sat on the Labour benches, they were a distance from their erstwhile parliamentary colleagues who are still firmly under the whip.

Shortall and Broughan engaged in conversation, while Fianna Fils Willie ODea challenged Gilmore to clear up the confusion about allowances for public sector workers.

I am happy to clear up any confusion in Deputy ODeas mind, said Gilmore.

The Tnaiste should do that for Deputy Shortall, too, said Fianna Fils Timmy Dooley.

The Shortall-Broughan conversation ended abruptly when the source of Shortalls wrath was referred to by Sinn Fins Caoimhghn Caolin.

Is the Tnaiste in any way concerned at the contempt of the Minister for Health, Deputy Reilly, for those who question him, Caolin asked.

Another Retirement Rule of Thumb

Posted: at 7:26 am

Time for another retirement rule of thumb According to Fidelity investments, you should have saved 8x your annual (final) salary by the time you reach age 67 if you want to replace 85% of your pre-retirement income in retirement.

To stay on track for this, you should have saved 1x your income by age 35, 3x your income by age 45, and 5x by age 55. They do acknowledge that every individual's situation will differ greatly based on desired lifestyle in retirement, but still

In my view, this is just another in a long line of bogus (imho) guidelines that feed into the fallacy that retirement planning should be based on pre-retirement income levels. I've said it before and I'll say it again:

Retirement savings goals should be based on expenses, not income.

If you're living paycheck-to-paycheck, then income might be a decent proxy for expenses. But I'm hoping that's not the case for most of you.

There are also a number of underlying assumptions here. Among them:

In the end, if rules like this spur someone to action (vs. complete inaction) by at least providing a concrete and/or conceivable (if wildly inaccurate) goal, then I guess they're doing their job.

But you're not doing yourself any favors (again, imho) by burying your head in the sand and basing your retirement plan on overly-simplistic assumptions.

Here's a simple rule of thumb: Project your retirement income needs and multiply by 25 (or 33 if you want to be conservative). These values correspond to 4% and 3% withdrawal rates, respectively. That's how much you'll need in a well-diversified portfolio.

Is that number overwhelmingly large? Then you need to start earning more, investing more of what you take home, and/or reducing your desired standard of living. Or all three. You can't cheat reality.
