Obama's debate performance helped among women
Posted: October 18, 2012 at 12:22 am
(CBS News) After Tuesday night's presidential debate at Hofstra University on Long Island, CBS News' instant poll found that 39 percent of women believed President Obama won, 29 percent believed Gov. Mitt Romney won, and 33 percent called it a tie.
Those numbers represent a highly-prized demographic by both candidates. One of the president's main goals was to bring women back into the fold, and both men shared personal stories designed to appeal to women. In one notable case, however, that may have backfired.
Romney, Obama woo women after debate New Romney ad courts female vote Fact-checking Romney's "binders" claim Obama slams Romney for "binders" remark
An audience member, Katherine Fenton, gave both candidates the perfect opening: "In what new way do you intend to rectify the inequalities in the workplace, specifically regarding females make only 72 percent of what their male counterparts earn?"
President Obama was the first to respond, saying: "Well, Katherine, that's a great question, and you know, I was raised by a single mom who had to put herself through school while looking after two kids."
President Obama pointed out that the first bill he signed when he took office gave women more leeway to sue employers over unequal pay.
"I've got two daughters and I want to make sure they have the same opportunities that anybody's sons have," he said.
Romney argued he made hiring women a priority when he was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002.
"We took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet," he said. "I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks?' And they brought us whole binders full of women."
But Wednesday, Jesse Mermell, who ran the group that compiled those binders, said this in a conference call with reporters: "To be perfectly clear, Mitt Romney did not request those resumes. After the election, our group approached the Romney transition team with the resumes, or the so-called 'binders full of women.'"

At some point in his/her investing life, every private investor is faced with the same question: Does he actually add value by investing himself or not? I suspect the most common response is to ignore the question safe in the notion that its just a bit of fun on the sideline. Another is to avoid the complication of benchmarking performance and just be happy that the account is positive. However, for full time investors, the issue simply cannot be avoided.
Discerning readers will note that I specifically reference private investors here. The reason is that professional investors are not that as exposed inhow they earn money (fees, etc.) to the vagaries of performance. Private investors lose money when performance is negative. Do money managers refund fees?
Why Professionals Arent Trying to Outperform
It gets worse: The investment industry has learned a fundamental truth of behavioral finance and constantly applies it. Im talking about the tendency of investors to psychologically weight a loss double that of a gain.
Asset managers understand this because they realize that investors will overweight a losing performance versus a winning one. In other words, if an asset manager underperforms for a client his downside risk (losing assets under management) is far greater than the upside from outperforming. Now you know why the investment industry produces such samey benchmark-hugging performance. Its in their interests to do so.
If there was a difference between what, say,T Rowe Price (NASDAQ: TROW) and Ameriprise Financial (NYSE: AMP) did, surely it would show up in marked differences in share price performance?

Speaker lays out guidelines for success

Many MSU groups cater to specific interests or demographics, but one program offers something everyone wants simple guidelines to success.
The student-driven organization, the MSU Advantage Program, kicked off its Success Series Tuesday night by bringing motivational speaker and author, Eric Thomas, to the Erickson Hall Kiva to speak to students.
Tony Nuckolls, MSU alumnus and vice president of training and development at Quicken Loans, accompanied Thomas, also an MSU alumnus, to the Erickson Hall Kiva stage to speak about the importance of networking to personal success.
I would really recommend that students cry out to alumni, faculty and staff, Thomas said. I believe that with the right support of human resources and financial support, any student has the ability to do well.
African American and Latino male graduation rates have dropped to about 32 percent in the past six years, according to Thomas.
Being in Detroit, my biological father wasnt in my life, and then I dropped out of high school, he said. It took 12 years for me to get an undergraduate degree, but I did it.
Dont quit; just keep going, is what economics senior Walter Bivens said he stresses to everyone attending MSU Advantage Program events.
The MSU Advantage Program includes members who are economically strict, who grew up on the wrong side of lifes tracks, those with depression issues and even those who excel in academics, according to Bivens.
Were looking to save all students, from the 4.0 student to the student whos on academic probation, to make sure they graduate and stay the course, Bivens said.

FIU Panthers’ Jake Medlock puts team’s success above self
Posted: at 12:21 am
FIU quarterback Jake Medlock had his best game statistically as a Panther last week, throwing for 380 yards against Middle Tennessee State. All those yards, however, couldnt take away the hurt of a 34-30 loss.
I would have settled for 1 yard passing, even a half-yard, if that would have gotten us the win, Medlock said. I just want a W. Thats all I want, and it doesnt matter how we get it.
Wins have been a rarity for FIU this season; the Panthers are 1-6 with an 0-3 Sun Belt Conference record.
In the fourth game of this season, Medlock broke his foot against Louisville and sat out the next two contests against Louisiana-Lafayette and Arkansas State both losses.
Hes a tough guy, FIU coach Mario Cristobal said of Medlock. Youre not going to find guys tougher than him, and youre not going to find guys that are more committed than him. Hes the kind of guy you want at that quarterback position.
Hes a leader, hes smart, hes tough, and hes a worker.
Against Middle Tennessee, he was also efficient, completing 24 of 38 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The 380 yards are the second-highest by an FIU quarterback in the schools brief 10-year football history, only behind Paul McCalls 400 yards in a 57-50 overtime loss to Florida Atlantic in 2008.
Hes throwing the ball well, Cristobal said. Hes throwing the ball on time, and he has become a real strong team leader. His best football is ahead of him, and we expect him to have a great career here at FIU.
He knows he can do even better, and hes hungry to do better.
As for the broken foot, which has been heavily wrapped, Cristobal said, Hes still banged up. Hes not even close to 100 percent.

Business Leaders Are Learning That Success Does Not Always Equal Fulfillment

DENVER, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Things are running like clockwork. Profits are high, salary is excellent, perks are plentiful. The media is calling, coverage is positive. Then poof - it's gone. Like many entrepreneurs, Brian Gast lived in a bubble filled with delusions of grandeur and a sense of import. In his new book, "The Business of Wanting More: Why Some Executives Move From Success To Fulfillment And Others Don't," Gast shares not only his personal story, but presents the transformational Q7 Process which will help executives, struggling between success and happiness, achieve both.
Somewhere along his journey, Gast says, "I became fascinated by the workings of the psyche and committed myself to dissolving the illusions that kept me from seeing what was true about myself and the world. Something deep inside told me that my life was no accident; that I, in fact, was uniquely equipped to help busy executives discern what truly fulfills them. Taking what I learned about transforming human behavior, I created the Q7 Process to help executives move from success to fulfillment."
The Q refers to the quadrant, one quarter of the four-dimensional grid comprised of Feeling, Acting, Thinking, and Being; the 7 refers to the seven steps of the process. These steps span three stages: Preparation (steps 1, 2, and 3); Transformation (steps 4 and 5); and Integration (steps 6 and 7):
Step One: Take a Fearless Inventory of Your Life
Step Two: Create A Vision For Your Life
Step Three: Remove The Barriers To Fulfillment
Step Four: Burst Your Bubble
Step Five: Build Your Court Of Support
Step Six: Create a Personal-Practices Regimen
Step Seven: Draw A Road Map To Your Future

Young Israeli Arabs and Jews, Japanese to visit Pittsburgh non-profit and bolster efforts to export adult career …

PITTSBURGH, Oct. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --On October 20, 2012, Manchester Bidwell Corporation (MBC) will host a group of international delegates attending the One Young World Summit in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Four of the young leaders attending the "Art for Work's Sake" breakout session are from countries currently working to replicate the success of MBC in their own cities.
UPMC, with the help of of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, is generously sponsoring the attendance of university student/activist Narumi Ishihara and university student/journalist Ryohei Moji of Japan and Helwe Najami and Katab Uzan Inbal, education advocates from Israel.
MBC CEO and Founder William E. Strickland Jr. is no stranger to the citizens of Israel and Japan. In 2010, Strickland was awarded the Goi Peace Award by the Goi Peace Foundation of Japan. Many recipients of this honor have subsequently been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Additionally, in summer 2012, Strickland received the Pursuer of Peace award from Pittsburgh's Rodef Shalom congregation for his work to establish a center for Arabs and Jews in northern Israel.
Strickland and MBC's success working with disadvantaged people is long-standing. In 1968, Strickland founded Manchester Craftsmen's Guild to provide local at-risk youth with the same student-mentor relationship he had experienced with his teacher, Frank Ross. This program has expanded to include four art studios and serves approximately 400 Pittsburgh-area students a year. Additionally, Strickland oversees the operations of Bidwell Training Center, which provides accredited and state licensed career training to 200 adults in transition each year. Together under the parent company MBC and along with social entrepreneurial initiatives like jazz concerts, orchid sales and commercial real estate, the programs create the empowering educational environment Strickland espouses as "the cure for spiritual cancer."
Realizing the educational model could be scaled, Strickland founded the National Center for Arts & Technology to expand to other cities in the United States and abroad. Currently, five cities across the country have affiliated centers. The NCAT team is working with community leaders in Israel and Japan to establish facilities overseas.
"Hope is universal but it needs a place to blossom. I believe we have a way to do that with MBC's educational model," says Strickland. "I am excited to host these vibrant young world leaders. Also, I am grateful to UPMC and the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh for bringing together representatives from the countries we are trying to help by establishing centers. With friends of this caliber, we will succeed in expanding across the globe."
"UPMC has a longstanding relationship with Manchester Bidwell Corporation. We proudly support the educational work MBC does in Pittsburgh and across the U.S. with both youth and adults. We are excited to help the organization take its next evolutionary, international step and create relationships with these One Young World delegates relationships we hope will help successfully establish centers in both Israel and Japan," says Scott Lammie,Chief Financial Officer,UPMC Health Plan,Senior Vice President,UPMC Insurance Services Division.
In addition to the One Young World delegates attending breakout session and meeting Strickland, MBC is also hosting a dinner for a second group of delegates the evening of October 20, 2012. This group, including representatives from Egypt to South Africa, will tour the facility and attend a 9:30 p.m. performance by GRAMMY Award winning musician Bela Fleck as well as The Marcus Roberts Trio. Fleck and the Trio will be playing at MBC's facility that evening as part of affiliated program MCG Jazz's concert season.

Workout of the week: Silent Hot Yoga
Posted: at 7:21 am
Colorado Athletic Club. 1821 30th St., Boulder, 303-501-1700, wellbridge.com/colorado-athletic-club/boulder
Instructor: Ani Jackson, of Boulder, began her yoga practice in 1995 and began teaching yoga in 2005. She's been teaching hot yoga for about a year and a half and started teaching the Silent Hot Yoga class at the Colorado Athletic Club seven months ago.
"For people who practice regularly, the silent class allows them to go deeper into their postures. It's more meditative," Jackson says.
The fact that Jackson practices along with the class allows her to use her own movements and breath to help set the mood for the class, something she says she finds particularly enjoyable about teaching this class.
What is the workout? The workout is basically the Bikram model of hot yoga in which the same 26 postures are done in the same sequence every time in a hot room. The 26 postures have been chosen and sequenced provide benefit to the whole body, inside and out, while working together synergistically.
What's different? What's different about this class is that it's conducted almost entirely in silence. I say almost, because Jackson does cue each posture by stating its name and the duration the posture will be held. But she doesn't give other verbal clues about the posture such as how to move into it, to check your alignment, to check your breath and so on.
I've taken many yoga classes over the years and this was the first time there wasn't almost constant chatter from the instructor and definitely the first time that the instructor practiced along with us instead of moving around and correcting postures.
Cost: The class is free to members of the Colorado Athletic Club. Non-members can pay a $15 fee to use the club in it's entirety for the day, which is pretty great considering they have some nice amenities.
Level: I would put this class at a six on a 10 point scale. I've done other yoga classes that were harder physically, but not as challenging mentally.
During class, I realized how much of a distraction the talking is in normal yoga classes. In the silence, I found my mind wandering quite and bit, and it was a challenge to stay mentally focused and in the present moment. That proved to be harder for me than the physical challenge of the postures. However, yoga is about challenging yourself in every capacity and I have no doubt that, over time, I would find this class extremely meditative.
