Posted: November 7, 2012 at 6:50 am
Strength training is in. Pilates is out. Those are the findings of a survey by the American College of Sports Medicine that predicts major health and fitness trends for the coming year in the U.S. A quick rundown:
1. Educated and certified fitness pros: More fitness programs tied to businesses and organizations mean more jobs for fitness experts.
2. Strength training: Yes, body builders pump iron, but regular folk, in increasing numbers, rely on weights to improve or maintain strength, and rehabilitate injuries.
3. Body weight training: This back-to-basics approach, which requires only a minimum amount of equipment, is all the rage in gyms everywhere.
4. Obesity programs for children: A chronic and frightening health issue demands more specialized physical activities for those in need.
5. Exercise and weight loss: More people are realizing that incorporating exercise and into their daily diet routine is essential for weight-loss maintenance.
Other major fitness trends listed near the top of the survey include:
Programs for older adults

GoodLife Fitness collaborates with Peter Munk Cardiac Centre to improve Canadians' heart health

$5 million donation to establish GoodLife Fitness Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Medicine
TORONTO, Nov. 5, 2012 /CNW/ - Canadians suffering from heart disease will have greater access to cardiovascular rehabilitation thanks to a $5 million donation by GoodLife Fitness to the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. The GoodLife Fitness Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Medicine marks the beginning of an innovative and first of its kind, private/public collaboration between GoodLife Fitness and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at UHN.
Heart disease is the number one cause of hospitalization in Canada, affecting more than 1.3 million Canadians. Many risk factors for heart disease - poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, stress - are on the rise. The new Centre will drive care and research in post-acute cardiovascular health and secondary prevention, and will be internationally recognized for excellence in heart health and exercise.
"At GoodLife, we are excited to enter into this collaboration with UHN and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre," said Founder & CEO, David Patchell-Evans. "As a leader in the health and fitness industry in Canada and global advocate for exercise as an important contributor to overall health, this collaboration is an excellent opportunity to venture into new areas of care. Knowing our donation will make a direct impact on patients and their families while also positively impacting the health care system as a whole, means that we are one step closer to fulfilling our vision to give Canadians the opportunity to live fit and healthy lives. We are united with the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre in the belief that activity and exercise are of vital importance as a main component of any treatment plan."
The collaboration brings together two leading health and wellness organizations in Canada to further enhance the world-class care provided to Peter Munk Cardiac Centre cardiac rehabilitation patients, as well as the development of an innovative approach to the continuum of care for patients with cardiac disease. For Peter Munk Cardiac Centre patients, this means greater access to the latest cardiac rehabilitation and preventative techniques and equipment; a supportive environment to strive for their rehabilitation goals; an enhanced continuum of care extending into the community, and, as a result, overall improved health and wellness and a significantly decreased likelihood of another cardiac episode.
In addition to creating the Centre of Excellence, GoodLife's donation will also fund the GoodLife Fitness Chair in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Prevention. This individual will lead a comprehensive research program that will include investigations into best practices in cardiac rehabilitation and analysis of cardiovascular databases to better understand long-term patient outcomes. In addition, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre cardiac rehabilitation experts along with fitness experts from GoodLife Fitness will work together to build a program to help patients transition into the community and achieve life-long success in their cardiac rehabilitation and health.
"The GoodLife Fitness Chair will build upon a proud history of cardiac achievement at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, including completing the first aortic valve replacement using the Toronto Heart Valve in 1987 and most recently, Ontario's first cardiac stem cell transplant earlier this year," said Dr. Barry Rubin, Program Medical Director of the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. "Across the country, Canadians will benefit from the knowledge developed in the GoodLife Fitness Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Medicine, which will be translated to GoodLife Fitness Clubs and cardiac rehabilitation clinics coast-to-coast. We envision that patients will seamlessly transition from in-patient and then out-patient cardiac rehabilitation to a sustained exercise program at GoodLife Fitness Clubs designed to meet each individual's needs."
Funds will also help revitalize the existing rehabilitation facilities throughout UHN to better match the standard of care offered by the cardiovascular rehabilitation services in the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and Toronto Rehab's Rumsey Centre. In addition to growing and revitalizing the current space, GoodLife is providing state-of-the-art cardiovascular exercise and monitoring equipment, along with providing new technology such as tablets.
"Today marks a significant day in cardiac care, here at UHN and at centres around the world," said Dr. Robert Bell, President and CEO at UHN. "The GoodLife Fitness Centre of Excellence in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Medicine will foster knowledge and innovation in cardiac health, reduce re-admissions of current patients and prevent cardiac episodes from the outset. This will save lives and help to reduce the cost of care in Ontario. This was a natural collaboration for us because it marries the cardiac rehabilitation focus for inpatients and our ability to involve the cardiac rehabilitation program and research in Toronto Rehab's Rumsey Centre. The research program at Toronto Rehab has demonstrated that individuals who complete cardiac rehabilitation following a major heart event cut their risk of dying from another cardiac event by as much as 50 per cent."
This is an important contribution to Building the Future - from the heart Campaign that launched in November 2011 and is raising $100 million to support cardiac care at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.

Seven in 10 Americans are self-tracking their health and fitness: survey
Posted: at 6:50 am
Seven in ten American adults are self-tracking their fitness and health -- but only a fifth are relying on technology to do the job, with the other half keeping tabs "in their heads," according to a new survey from Pew Internet Project.
Last week, the project's associate director of digital strategy, Susannah Fox, shared early results at the Connected Health Symposium in Boston.
Of those who don't rely on technology, Fox noted that others may use a pair of skinny jeans to track weight gain -- if the jeans are too tight, it's time to watch the diet more carefully. One-third of self-trackers use a notebook or journal. Half of those who track do so on a regular basis, while the rest do so when something changes and triggers the need to track.
"Smartphones are becoming ubiquitous in the lives of the people who use them, so they offer the potential to turn head-trackers into real trackers, recording more complete data that can help them better manage their health," write the mobile health experts at Mobihealthnews.com on the report.
Fox noted that app developers should aim to make tracking health on mobile phones as easy to do as tracking in your head.
The survey also showed that among self-trackers, 34 percent said the habit affected a health decision, 40 percent said it led them to ask their doctor a new question or seek a second opinion, and 46 percent said self-tracking changed their overall approach to health.

FIT AND HAPPY. We have trivia about James, Iza and Phil, too
MANILA, Philippines - Healthy food choices and eating habits are crucial in an active lifestyle.
Athletes James and Phil Younghusband and actress Iza Calzado know and practice this.
The 3 celebrities are the new ambassadors of Kenny Rogers Roasters, introduced last October in an event at their new branch in Matalino Street, Quezon City.
When were coaching kids, we want to pass on the message of a healthy lifestyle, says James. The star athlete brothers have been busy with their football academy where they teach football to kids below 6 years old.
The best way to preach, according to James, is through practice.
It makes a huge difference. If you eat well in the morning, it improves your performance in a game, continues his brother, Philip.
BEAUTY AND BRAINS. Iza sticks to a fitness regimen that works for her
For Iza, health and fitness takes on a more personal note. She recalls struggling with obesity in high school and the unhealthy eating habits that led to radical weight gains and losses.

Men's Health Announces India's Fittest Men in 2012
Posted: at 6:50 am
NEW DELHI, India, November 7, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
From Fat to Fit, Hrithik Roshan tops the list
Men's Health magazine's coveted list of 2012's Fittest Men is out this month, and you haven't made the cut yet. But there is enough in it for you to emulate and be ready in time for the next year's list.
The 6th anniversary special issue of the magazine features seven of India's fittest men, led by never-before-seen 'fat' pictures of Bollywood superhero Hrithik Roshan, along with an Olympic bronze medal-winner and one of India's most promising fashion designers, a journalist with eight-packs, a 42-year-old Bollywood film director and an anti-hero who's making waves in the Hindi film industry.
The piece de resistance of the issue, however, is Hrithik Roshan and his superhuman dedication fitness. In a script that has blockbuster written all over it, the special package is led by a picture of H.Ro sporting an unheard of 36.5 inch waist, flabby arms, struggling with a double slipped disc, torn rotator cuffs, arthritic knees and scoliosis, following a freak accident. Undeterred by the sniggers coming his way, H.Ro allowed his 'fat' picture to be used in an ad for an international publication, and worked hard to get back in shape in just four weeks to reclaim his top-drawer status in the Bollywood scheme of things.
Says Jamal Shaikh, editorial director of Men's Health, "Fitness as we define at Men's Health isn't just about how much you can lift, how fast you can sprint etc. It is also about what you do with the body you build, the people you inspire and the legacy you leave behind. And Hrithik Roshan is a role-model we all can look up to."
The power-packed November issue is not just about what you can lift or the speed at which you sprint. It is also about reclaiming your '6-pack Identity'. Consider this. The Olympian credits his victory to a strict vegetarian diet confined to dal, chapatti, fruits and buffalo milk. Add a dedicated, disciplined workout regime to this, he says, and you have the recipe for success. "The strongest animal on land is vegetarian," he says, to dispel doubts that vegetarian athletes are weaker than their non-vegetarian counterparts. The 14-page special section has everything you need to do to upgrade your life, from tips on sex to fitness to grooming and styling.
For this and much more, go grab a copy of the November issue of the magazine.
You could also download a digital copy of the magazine which can be read on tablets and smartphones. Visit http://www.menshealthindia.com/digitalmagazine to know more about the digital editions.
Men's Health isIndia'slargest-selling men's magazine, and was launched in the country by The India Today Group in 2006. Internationally, it is the world's largest magazine in the men's category as well. Along with its focus on the core topics of health, fitness and nutrition, Men's Health embodies the feel of a true lifestyle magazine with sections on fashion, grooming, adventure, work, managing relationships and a surplus of other 'guy' topics.
