Rugby is life for old Pirates

Posted: November 8, 2012 at 11:47 pm

Nov. 8, 2012, 8:30 p.m.

DARYL Bath and Adrian Snowden are the newest additions to Pirates life membership board.

The pair were bestowed the honour at the clubs presentation night in recognition of their years of service to the club.

Both have coached at some time, and worked tirelessly behind the scenes, whether it be marking the lines or filing paperwork or any of the other many duties involved in running a club.

Bath has been there since the 1980s. He played a handful of games but then a shoulder injury ended his playing days.

Wanting to stay involved he turned to coaching, and coached first grade from 82-84 and half of 86.

It was good fun. I enjoyed it. I made a lot of friends that I still have, Bath said.

That is one of the best things about being involved with a rugby club, he said.

The best part about a rugby club is its a family, he said.

His time in charge was pretty successful. Pirates made the semi-finals in 83 and were finalists in 84.

Texas coaching legend Royal dies at 88

Posted: at 11:47 pm

AUSTIN, Texas A son of Depression-era Oklahoma, Darrell Royal came to Texas to take over a sleeping giant of a football program. Over 20 years, his folksy approach to sports and life, his inventive wishbone offense and a victory in the "Game of the Century" where a U.S. president declared his team national champion made him an icon of college football.

Royal, who won two national championships and turned the Longhorns program into a national power, died early Wednesday at age 88 of complications from cardiovascular disease, school spokesman Bill Little said. Royal also had suffered from Alzheimers disease.

Royal didnt have a single losing season in his 23 years as a head coach at Texas, Mississippi State and Washington. Known for their stout defenses and punishing running attacks, his Texas teams boasted a 167-47-5 record from 1957-1976, the best mark in the nation over that period.

"It was fun," Royal told The Associated Press in 2007. "All the days I was coaching at Texas, I knew this would be my last coaching job. I knew it when I got here."

It almost didnt happen. Royal wasnt Texas first choice.

Texas was coming off a 1-9 season in 1956 still the worst in program history and wanted a high-profile coach to turn things around. The Longhorns were rebuffed by Georgia Techs Bobby Dodd and Michigan States Duffy Daugherty, but both coaches encouraged Texas to hire the 32-year-old Royal, who was lying in bed the night he got the call summoning him to Austin.

"Edith, this is it, this is the University of Texas," Royal told his wife.

On Saturday, the Longhorns will honor Royal at their home game against Iowa State by wearing "DKR" stickers on their helmets and by lining up in the wishbone formation, which Royal used to such great success, for their first offensive snap.

A football life comes to an end for Bill Curry

Posted: at 11:47 pm

ATLANTA (AP) -- As a commuter train rumbled by, Bill Curry strolled around the practice field on a chilly Georgia morning, wearing a blue stocking cap and barking out instructions on his megaphone.

''Field goal team,'' he instructed. ''Be ready to kick.''

A few minutes later, the final practice of a football life spanning more than a half-century was done.

For Curry, there's just one more game to go.

''It's really hard to believe,'' he said Thursday, before dabbing at his eyes with a handkerchief. ''It went by fast.''

Curry, who has spent the past three years building a new program at Georgia State, will retire after Saturday's game at Maine. This not the way he wanted to go out - the Panthers struggling mightily with a 1-9 record - but he was feeling a little better after his players lifted him off the ground at the end of the workout, giving him that sensation of a coach being carried away in triumph.

He announced his retirement before the season even began, expressing a desire to spend more time with his wife and family. He knew this day was coming but, still, it's been weighing on him a bit as months turned to weeks, weeks turned to days.

''I couldn't sleep last night. I woke up really early,'' Curry said. ''But I've been doing that every night for the last two of three weeks. I couldn't help but count it down.''

At age 70, he has no regrets about stepping aside, other than the way he's going out. Until now, Curry could always ward off the sting of failure by telling himself that there's always the next game, the next season, the next job.

He doesn't have that option anymore.

Curry’s coaching legacy not numbers driven

Posted: at 11:47 pm

Prior to placing the capstone on a career rich in character-building and idealism, there is one thing best understood about Bill Curry.

Winning mattered, too.

Before he was a nagging conscience of college football, before his mid-80s declaration that his Georgia Tech team would drive the cheaters to their knees, he was growing up in College Park as Bill Sr.s son. And when you were in the company of the elder Curry, a man as unyielding as the weights he lifted competitively, you did everything with intense desire to be the best.

Curry, too, was the lineman who sampled victory in Super Bowls I and V with Green Bay and Baltimore, and very much enjoyed the taste.

And when he didnt win, it hurt like blazes.

Look, this is America, we play to win, he said. If you play football and get your college degree and you dont learn how to win youve been cheated. Just as surely as if you win a bunch of games and you dont get your degree.

You got to win its not even fun if you dont win. Its a nightmare.

The days have dwindled to a precious three on a 20-year coaching career that defies easy assaying. Curry has breathed life into his Georgia Tech alma mater, been an unhappy outsider at Alabama, tried to convert Kentuckians to a less spherical ball and grew a program from the asphalt of Georgia State. At 70, he will retire Saturday after the Panthers final game of the season at Maine.

Normally, high up in the legacy-writing process, you cite some one-sided career record and let the numbers herald the man. Curry enters his last hurrah with a 93-127-4 lifetime ledger.

Yes, he had some splendid moments: His 1980 Tech team played No. 1-ranked Notre Dame to a 3-3- tie; his 1984 and 85 teams recorded huge victories over Georgia; his 1989 Alabama team won an SEC title. The final classes he signed at Georgia Tech and Alabama both would go on to help win national titles for another coach. But, often saddled with building/rebuilding projects, Curry would endure more losing seasons (11) than winning ones (7).
