What Teachers Can Learn As Students in MOOCs ....Laureen P. Cantwell, Assistant Professor and Instructional Services Librarian. As a faculty librarian heavily engaged in instruction, with research interests in information literacy, and who eagerly and often participates in massive open online courses (or MOOCs), I realized recently that I #39;m looking at these courses as a student and as an instructor (and as a librarian, I suppose). For those of us who have taken online courses and/or completed degrees online and/or participated in distance education, this session will get you thinking about (1) instruction delivery, (2) student participation and engagement, (3) online education community-building, (4) supporting student learning styles, and (5) information literacy learning outcome delivery in the online course setting -- particularly in MOOCs. We will discuss the different MOOC platforms available (eg, Coursera), policies of these settings, course structures, and how students are educated (and how instructors educate) in these learning environments. Then, we will look at a few important aspects of global education in public health topics and courses -- bringing on discussion of how global education initiatives, through MOOCs, can create global competencies and inspire discussion and engagement with learning and curiosity on a global scale.
