The YOU Docs: Whew … aerobics sure can give your brain a workout

Posted: November 18, 2012 at 10:46 am

As Green Bay Packers' coach Vince Lombardi once said: "Practice doesn't make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect."

Today, neurologists can explain exactly what the coach was on to.

When you practice learning something new -- playing the piano, dribbling a basketball or using your computer mousewith your opposite hand -- you're building new neural pathways in your brain.

The more intense the practice, the stronger and more functional those neural pathways and the better you can play the piano or the more likely you are to make a three-pointer with your nondominant hand.

Fortunately, old dogs CAN learn new tricks, and as you get older, your brain can continue to build new pathways and get stronger, even if it's at a slower pace than when you were a kid.

To make sure your brain stays toned and ready to fire, the thought for the day? Aerobics.

You can protect prefrontal and temporal gray matter volume and forge new neural pathways with daily activity. Our suggestion for all ages: walking -- 100 steps a minute for 10 to 15 minutes; then 2.5 minutes of intense walking -- 130 steps a minute. Repeat at least once sometime during your day.

This brain-building technique also can help folks who develop a neurodegenerative disease like Parkinson's, in which old pathways are lost and new ones are hard to develop.

At Dr. Mike's Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, intense exercise improves symptoms for more than 30 percent of people with Parkinson's.

Gator Eats Man’s Arm – Video

Posted: at 10:46 am

Gator Eats Man #39;s Arm
Man-eating Alligator bites off Man #39;s arm in Lake Moultrie in South Carolina. It was a warm sunny.. Sunday afternoon in South Carolina. 59 year old, Bill Hedden scanned the surface of Lake Moultrie before entering the water with his snorkel. Bill was only safe for about 5 minutes before an aggressive 12 foot long 600 pound gator found him and attacked with over 2000 pounds of pressure, bit off the man #39;s left arm at the shoulder joint. Mr Hedden rushed out of the water and collapsed about 20 feet away from a group of nurses who were picnicking in the recreation area. They rushed to his side to help.. applying pressure to the open wound to stop the bleeding. Meanwhile, officers from the Department of Natural Resources quickly tracked down the alligator and shot it several times. They cut open the man-eating gator and removed Bill #39;s arm. They placed Bill #39;s severed limp into an ice chest as paramedics arrived to take them both to the hospital. Unfortunately, the man #39;s arm could not be re-attached but luckily Bill has made a full recovery and thanks the group of nurses who saved his life. Mr Hedden, a retired US Navy master chief, had been swimming in different parts of the lake regularly for excercise Bill #39;s son Brian was quoted saying- "We #39;ve lived here a long time," "We #39;re aware pretty much that if there #39;s fresh water around, there #39;s a chance of an alligator. He #39;s extremely cautious about checking the shore." "I was swimming there less than two weeks prior to the attack ...From:epicwildlifeViews:347 8ratingsTime:01:36More inPets Animals
