Bikram Yoga bringing the heat to the Main Line
Posted: at 8:44 am
The temperature may be dropping, but Diane Roberts is turning up the heat on the Main Line.
Roberts, a 35-year-old Radnor native, officially opened the doors to customers at her new Yoga studio, located in the Wynnewood West Shopping Center, on Saturday, Nov. 10. Roberts started renovations on her yoga studio over Labor Day weekend 2012, Roberts has been working rather quickly to turn the old Jean Madeline Institute into a yoga studio that the Lower Main Line does not yet havea Bikram Yoga studio.
The difference between a traditional yoga class and Bikram Yoga is that the room is designated to 105 degrees, at 40 percent humidity for the entire 90-minute session.
Heat has properties of thinning the blood, so that the blood is less likely to clot, said Ed Silver, one of the teachers at Bikram Yoga Wynnewood. He went on to explain how the heat warms and protects the muscles to allow for deeper stretching in a shorter amount of time, seeing results faster. Heat also detoxifies the body, giving you a wonderful glow from head to toe.
Combining the heat with contorting the body in a variety of different ways may scare some people away from trying Bikram Yoga, but as Roberts and Silver explained, anyone can become a regular Bikram Yoga attendee.
This is actually beginner style yoga, Roberts said during an interview last Monday afternoon at the studio. The poses do not require strength and flexibility. You are not doing splits and handstands and backbends. Anybody of any strength and any age can come in and take a class.
A main reason that Roberts opened the Bikram-style yoga studio is because of the health benefits, as it opens up your spine and heals your spine. You become longer and leaner.
Most exercises compress the vertebrae, but Bikram lengthens the vertebrae, so that there is better blood flow to the nervous system, Silver said in addition to Roberts explanation.
With the opening of the spine, and elongating the body, Roberts said many athletes, such as tennis stars Andy Murray and Serena Williams are practicing this form of hot yoga.
Every class at Bikram Yoga Wynnewood is treated exactly the same. Each class is 90-minutes long, there are 26 poses that are performed (along with two breathing exercises) and that no matter if the participant is a beginner, or a seasoned veteran, be prepared to sweat, both instructors said multiple times. Yoga studio business on the rise in area
Posted: at 8:44 am
The practice of yoga has been growing in popularity across the United States for decades, particularly in places like Los Angeles and New York City.
As crazes like pilates and zumba have certainly taken the fitness world by storm in the last few years, the age-old practice of yoga has managed to stay afloat.
Theres a lot of ebb and flow within the fitness world. Yoga, I think, will have a longer staying power because yoga is thousands of years old and its been practiced all over the world for over 2,000 years and theres true concepts in it, said Jennifer Chisam, owner of Mountain Yoga, 151A E. Mountcastle Drive.
While yogas worldwide popularity has been alive and well in other areas for quite some time, its beginning to catch on in Johnson City and the surrounding region.
Compared to the rest of the country, were kind of behind the times, Chisam said.
She pointed to just across the mountains in Asheville, N.C., as a prime example since there seems to be a yoga studio on just about every corner.
Its kind of become an obsession for the entire country, Chisam said.
And Chisam believes Johnson City is right on the cusp on capitalizing on the yoga craze.
Johnson City has a number of yoga studios, including Inner Sea Yoga, New Paradigm and Shakti in the Mountains. Most of those studios are located within just a few miles of one another.
Yoga classes are even offered at East Tennessee State University.

Woodland Park based yoga scholar teaches meditation

WOODLAND PARK Rev. Jaganath Carrera, a yoga scholar with bushy grey beard, who wore a long white tunic and went barefoot during an interview at his Yoga Life Society center on McBride Avenue, started studying yoga in 1973.

Rev. Jaganath Carrera, sitting at his center in Woodland Park, teaches yoga meditation.
At the time, he learned of John Coltrane's and other musicians' connections to the discipline.
"The music moved me and I wanted to know what moved them," Carrera said.
Now he teaches a synthesis of various branches of yoga. Those include Bhakti yoga, yoga of devotion, Raja yoga, a moral type of yoga, and Japa yoga, which includes the repetition of mantras, he said.
"The idea is that your whole life is involved in the practice of yoga," Carrera said.
He is a strong proponent of yoga meditation, something that he teaches readers how to do in his new book "Awaken: Inside Yoga Meditation."
"It is a great way to break the cycle of stress," he said. "It's a little retreat."
Carrera said that in the name of meditation, devotees pick a thought or an object to focus on and that as a result both their creativity and focus is increased.
