Ashlee Willaman is a 5-time marathoner (currently training for her first 50 miler) and a Yogaworks 500 hour certified teacher, specializing in Yoga for Athletes and Runners. Having been a runner and yogi since her teenage years, she knows the importance of restoring balance to the body to recover faster and avoid injuries in order to train harder. Her classes and private sessions focus on attention to alignment, deep restorative stretching and practicing awareness of the body in real, practical terms. She finds that yoga and running have a lot of crossover. The deep breathing and quieting of the mind that is practiced on the yoga mat can be very helpful in the last miles of marathon. She teaches at various locations throughout NYC, is a running guide with City Running Tours, and offers private running tours which are followed by restorative yoga sessions so that you can get the most out of your runs. Yoga + laughter = a lot of fun in Sharon

Posted: at 10:46 pm

Kathi Mirza and her son walked into the Unitarian Church of Sharon holding yoga mats. They quickly find out that for Laughter Yoga, the mats wouldnt be necessary.

We didnt know what it was, Jasper Olson, Kathis 10-year-old son admitted after their first Laughter Yoga session on Saturday, March 9.

The two joined a group of around 20 strangers for Lets Laugh Today free monthly laughter yoga class and they had a blast.

I feel relaxed and calm, Mirza, a Sharon resident said. It is hard to walk away feeling grumpy after youve been laughing with 20 people for an hour.

This is exactly the outcome Bill and Linda Hamaker are hoping for at the end of every session.

We started it to bring more laughter to the world, Bill said at the start of Saturdays session. With everyone seated in circle, he began. This is not going to be like any yoga class youve ever been to.

The first Laughter Yoga club was founded in 1995 by of Dr. Madan Kataria, a physician from Mumbai, India. His wife, a yoga instructor, helped Kataria integrate yoga breathing techniques to the laughter exercises. There are now 75 different countries with Laughter Yoga Clubs.

They started out telling jokes but after a couple sessions they ran out of jokes, Bill explained. (Kataria) thought of a new idea and to do these exercises and he found they worked better than the jokes. He found, that we are at heart kids, and kids love to laugh. So if you can get past your mind. You can get to that inner child.

In 2009, Bill and Linda enrolled in a seminar in Chicago and became leaders. They formed their own club in September of 2009. A year later, after a 10-day seminar, the couple became Certified Laughter Yoga Teachers. During that seminar they trained with the founder of Laughter Yoga.

The Hamakers run regular monthly sessions in Franklin, Westwood, Walpole and Sharon. For specific times and dates, visit their website at http://www.letslaughtoday.com.

Dahn Yoga Life Monthly Glossary Explains Important "Hwe-eum" Meridian Point

Posted: at 10:46 pm

Dahn Yoga & Health Centers, Inc., a national leader in health and wellness, now features a Dahn Yoga Glossary for practitioners in their newsletter, Dahn Yoga Life. The March issue of the Dahn Yoga Glossary explains the meridian point known as Hwe-eum.

Gilbert, AZ (PRWEB) March 16, 2013

Experience in Dahn Yoga classes may provide the initial exposure to many words and phrases used in Dahn Yoga, as well as references to meridian points such as the Hwe-eum. The Glossary provides intriguing insight and greater understanding of these terms.

As Dahn Yoga Life continues their monthly series on the body's meridians, the focus this month is on the meridian point that rests at the base of the body, or the perineum.

The article, "The Hwe-eum: Your Bodys Heating Furnace", explains that the location of the Hwe-eum is the place where two meridians meet, forming the energy circuit that flows along the front and back of the body. The Korean definition of the meridian point's name is revealed.

With diagrams that show the precise location in both male and female anatomy, the feature further explains the important contribution of "strong will and power for life, physical vitality, and confidence" that this point supports when activated.

Since energy blockage in the Hwe-eum meridian point is common, symptoms arising from this are covered as well. Reflecting the principles of Dahn Yoga practice the article states, "As in Dahn Yogas principle of Water Up Fire Down, the head must be cool and the belly warm to achieve the human bodys ideal energy state."

This meridian is not easily stimulated through acupuncture or Moxibustion, so detailed instructions for three different methods for activating energy in the meridian point are offered.

With in-depth explanations offered in the Dahn Yoga Glossary of words and phrases regularly used in Dahn Yoga practice and meditation, the practitioners understanding, experience and Dahn yoga benefits will deepen. In addition to this month's issue, a treasure of previous articles is available online as well.

Yoga class for kids with disabilities fills growing need

Posted: at 10:46 pm

A yoga class for children with disabilities is expanding in response to what parents say is a growing need for recreation opportunities for their kids.

Gail Gagne has been offering a yoga program at the Glenwood Community Centre for children with developmental disabilities for the past year a program parents say was sorely needed.

Yoga for the Special Child currently has three children with autism and another with developmental challenges. Gagne rents space from the community centre for the classes.

Lisa Brunet brings her eight-year-old daughter Zora to the class.

Zora has a global developmental delay, low muscle tone and moderate hearing loss in her right ear, said Brunet.

But with the help of the class, Zoras motor skills are improving and shes a happier, healthier child.

Shes able to kind of run a little bit better, climb things, Brunet said.

Parent Leslie Candy said her 11-year-old son Justin has also seen benefits from the program.

Justin has autism and requires help to stay focused and socialize.

I think [the class] calms him a little bit, said Candy.

Yoga and more to be offered at new business in Overton Square

Kyle Kurlick/Special to The Commercial Appeal Olivia Lomax (left) and Charlene Gaffney are the partners in the Delta Groove Yoga studio that will open April 1 in Overton Square. Besides yoga, massage and other healing arts, they will offer a Cosmic Coconut juice and snack shop and other boutique offerings.

When Give Yoga on Mendenhall closed in October, its teachers and devotees thought theyd all scatter to different places.

It was such a beautiful, tight-knit community, said Olivia Lomax, Give Yogas former managing partner.

But now, they are looking forward to working together again in a new business with expanded offerings.

It started in December, when Lomax was invited to participate in the two-week holiday pop-up market MemShop in Overton Square.

Lomax partnered with the organic juice and snack bar Cosmic Coconut, which has a storefront in Sanderlin Center, served juices and held yoga classes, and called it Cosmic Collective.

The response was impressive, she said.

I kept getting texts and e-mails about how wonderful MemShop was and would I teach there. They were constant and overwhelming, said Lomax, 35, of East Memphis.

During MemShop, Lomax was introduced to massage therapist Charlene Gaffney. I attended some of her classes, and she got some (massage) work. It was almost like we fell in love, said Gaffney, 32, of Midtown.
