Yoga Week Wrap Up

Posted: at 3:44 pm

I checked out Bikram Yoga on Grafton St. for my final Yoga Week class. I have to admit that last time I stepped foot in this building it was the Coconut Grove Lounge. It is nothing like that anymore. It was bright, clean and had giant open windows. The change-rooms are huge and fully equipped with everything I forgot to bring, showers, soaps, hair dryers, lotions and deodorant: everything.

I was lucky enough to experience a class by instructor Measha. This lady rules. I'd like to award her with "most practical and stylish hot yoga outfit." I'm pretty sure it was a bathing suit. Standing on a block at the front of the class, she guided us through the poses explaining every step and encouraging us to push ourselves further by letting us know exactly what we were working towards. It's much easier to push yourself harder knowing that one day your head will touch the floor. At the end of class, Measha requested a round of applause for Danika and me. Thank you, thank you, Yoga Week has been hard. I'd like to thank my mom...

My other job involves interviewing old people about their health, and a lot of them say they have difficulty bending over. It's been a strange experience hearing that response while trying yoga for the first time. I don't only want to be able to bend over at 60; I hope by then my forehead will be on the floor. I think I'll keep this up.

Why Runners Should Practice Yoga

Posted: at 3:44 pm

CHAMPAIGN, IL--(Marketwired - October 10, 2013) - Runners are often reluctant to try yoga, but according to Christine Felstead, creator of the Yoga for Runners training program, runners have a tremendous amount to gain from adding yoga to their fitness regimen. "Yoga restores the body's balance and symmetry through the physical postures, especially sequences that are designed specifically for runners," Felstead says. "Many runners feel tremendous benefits even after just one yoga class, often expressing that they feel taller, their lower backs feel better, and they have greater body awareness during runs and during their daily activities."

In her forthcoming book, Yoga for Runners (Human Kinetics, 2013), Felstead outlines three benefits runners will receive by practicing yoga.

1. Better running. "Yoga stretchesand lengthens muscles so they become more supple and able to react whilerunning," Felstead says. "This decreases muscle stiffness and increasesrange of motion in joints, namely the hips, shoulders, ankles, and spine."Longer hamstrings and greater mobility of the hip joint create a longerand more fluid running stride. In addition, the strength and length gainedby the muscles help to stabilize the skeleton, resulting in fasterrunning. "A flexible joint requires less energy to move through a widerrange of motion, while a flexible body creates more energy-efficientmovements," Felstead adds. "This results in greater ease while movingabout throughout the day and potentially an improvement in athleticperformance. Runs will be less exhausting and more enjoyable."

2. Healing and avoiding injuries. Improvedsymmetry, alignment, and balance through yoga prevent injuries fromoccurring while healing stubborn, chronic, and recurring injuries. Yogapostures will help align the knee joint while strengthening the arches ofthe feet for better shock absorption. This reduces the weight-bearingimpact of running. "Runners have a high threshold for dealing with painand learn to live with many aches and pains as part of daily living,"Felstead admits. "Runners are often amazed at how many of these naggingdiscomforts are eliminated with yoga practice."

3. Postrace recovery. A yoga practiceafter racing helps to eliminate the stiffness caused by lactic acidbuildup in muscle tissue. "Students who force themselves to attend a yogaclass the day after a marathon are amazed at the speed of their recovery,"Felstead says. "Recovery times are reduced so runners are able to get backon the road quickly and in good health."

"While there are no guarantees in life, a regular yoga practice is a safe bet for reducing the risk of injury or helping cure a current one," Felstead stresses. "Many runners today are experiencing tremendous benefits, and the best results are from those who have made yoga part of their weekly workout routines. After some time they marvel at how injury free they have remained, regardless of the miles they run."

Yoga for Runners introduces 98 yoga poses and 10 sequences to instruct readers on improving strength, flexibility, endurance, breathing, mental sharpness, and overall running performance. For more information on Yoga for Runners or other yoga resources, visit http://www.HumanKinetics.com.
