Craig Sports Briefs for Dec. 29, 2013: Winter water aerobics underway

Registration for water aerobics during the winter is now open through Craig Parks and Recreation.

Water aerobics offer a low-resistance method of exercise and can improve fitness and flexibility. The classes are held at Moffat County High Schools pool on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m.

Classes run through Jan. 15 and will not occur the week of winter break. Sessions cost $45, or $4 for individual classes. For more information, contact Craig Parks and Recreation at 970-826-2017.

Registration is open for Craig Parks and Recreations Trailbusters program.

The Trailbusters offers ski and snowboard lessons for children from Craig in first through sixth grade in January and February. Lessons begin Jan. 18 and finish Feb. 22, and transportation to Steamboat is included.

Those interested must register by Jan. 10. The cost is $300, with participants purchasing lift tickets and rentals (if needed) for each Saturday they attend.

The Parks and Rec Ski Club is also accepting registrations now. The Ski Club is open to anyone and costs $10 to join. Members can get Saturday lift tickets for $57.

Basketball beginners can get into the sport though Craig Parks and Recreations junior youth basketball league.

Registration is open for boys and girls from kindergarten through second grade. Boys leagues will play Mondays and Wednesdays, while girls will be Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Locals Make New Years Resolutions to Get Fit

"It's the exercises I enjoy. When I went to the doctor, he said you should really start exercising more, and I said the only thing I want to do is swim, and he said, well, then you should get a membership and start swimming, so that's what I did. I made a resolution to swim 365 miles in 365 days, and I accomplished that with a little bit of extra time," said Total Fitness Connection member Brent Norris.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Now that Thanksgiving and Christmas have come and gone, it's time to start thinking about New Years and your resolutions. Gyms can be the most common place to find those resolutions, and how you can stick to them.

"To cut down on my body fat for sure, and tone up a little bit," said Total Fitness Connection member Eric Ferguson.

The fitness manager at Total Fitness Connection says he hears resolutions like that frequently, and often from those not used to working out.

"People that have never set foot in a gym tend to show up around January or February and get started, so it's a good time to get rolling right after the holidays,"said Total Fitness Connection Fitness Manager Steve Bean.

Today, a mother son duo had their first workout together.

"He wants to tone up. I want to tone up and better myself, and instead of going bowling and doing things we usually do outside, it's a thing we can do together. Our New Year's resolution is to get in shape... both of us, together," said Dawn Swain.

Bean says resolutions to get in shape are so common, they offer free enrollment on New Years day, but while the goals may be easy to set, he says they can be difficult to stick with.

"There's a big drop off around March, April and May before the summer," said Bean.

One man who began swimming at age five, and even swam for WKU, says he made sure to stick with his resolution by basing it on what he loves doing most, swimming.

Ohio aerial yoga classes take workouts to new heights

COLUMBUS, Ohio During a class in Yoga on High, 13 women spent part of the hour tapping their inner 5-year-olds rather than their spiritual selves.

Like youngsters on a playground, they squealed in delight while swinging in hammocks 3 feet off the ground, their legs stretched in front of them.

Following the lead of studio owner Michele Vinbury, the baker's dozen some more readily than others shifted into a move called an angel flip.

Although initially reluctant, 64-year-old Babaaritah Clark decided to give it a go, somersaulting forward while tangled in the stretchy fabric.

Wow, that was wild, said Clark, a Columbus resident.

Like Clark, others are gradually discovering the adventure and health benefits of aerial yoga.

The exercise, which began popping up in major cities such as New York in 2006, is just making its way to central Ohio. It blends traditional floor yoga with aerial arts, minus the intimidation.

Moves that might be more difficult on the ground become manageable with the support of high-density nylon hammocks, Vinbury said.

It's playful, she said. They're swinging, and they're having fun. But then they come up against an edge. I think people are surprised at what they can do.
