Yoga meets paddle board with fun results

Yoga meets paddle board with fun results

The waters of Koombana Bay have become an outdoor yoga and tai chi studio for those willing to have a go at the exercises on stand-up paddle boards.

The balancing act of stretching into a yoga pose while teetering on a paddle board has given even the most experienced yoga enthusiasts a fresh challenge.

But wobbling and falling off the boards during classes is all part of the fun, says SUP Bunbury owner Verity Lee.

It is completely different experience on the boards, its more of a challenge of your mind, she said.

Theres also the giggle factor and laughter therapy, its a more casual form of yoga.

Poses you would normally feel confident about on a matt become much harder on the board and you laugh and fall in the water.

Miss Lee has set up her stand-up paddle board hire business at Koombana Bay for the summer school holidays, taking a break from her usual day job as a town planner.

She said the boards popularity had grown in Bunbury because her hire business and Dolphin Aquatic Hire at the Leschenault Inlet had given people the chance to try the sport.

SUP Bunbury has stand-up paddle board yoga classes twice a week and tai chi is run on Sunday mornings.

Teilhard’s Evolutionary Spirituality

Posted: January 9, 2014 at 2:48 pm

TEILHARDS REVOLUTIONARY SPIRITUALITY

Teilhardian spirituality and his path to God are fresh and new in many ways. Here are a few that will be discussed in greater detail later on:

1. A New Starting Point

Teilhards spirituality takes a different starting point from most classic approaches to God. Unlike those approaches which require that you spurn the world in order to love God, Teilhard wrote The Divine Milieu for those who love passionately both God AND the world.

2. Picturing God

In addition to the two classical ways of picturing Godeither far away in heaven (transcendent) or living within your heart (immanent)Teilhards spirituality presents a third, much more comprehensive way to view our relationship with God. God is the One in whom we live and move and have our being. This is a way that was recognized in ancient times but never emphasized by formal religions.

3. Evolution and Science

Teilhards spirituality embraces and accepts the findings of modern science, especially the laws of evolution, which are at the roots of his thought. His approach does not distance itself from science, progress, complexity, modern life, information technology, or the media, as traditional spiritualities tend to do.

4. A Shared Destiny

Teilhard takes traditional individual spiritualitymy personal relationship to God and my personal enlightenment or salvationand expands it to become part of the grand project envisioned by God for humanitya shared planetary destiny.

Don Miguel Ruiz Interview with Women For One on Toltec Wisdom and His Book The Four Agreements

Posted: at 2:46 pm

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) January 09, 2014

Bestselling author of The Four Agreements, and heart-centered teacher don Miguel Ruiz recently spoke with Women For One's Founder, Kelly McNelis Senegor, about defining truth, how to avoid suffering, and how to work towards a more joyous, simpler state of mind.

After realizing that the Toltec wisdom practiced by his family held all the tools that could change the human mind, don Miguel realized his calling - marrying this wisdom with a practical, and even scientific point of view. He is considered a National Heirloom of Mexico, and has received numerous recognitions, including a US Air Force challenge coin engraved with The Four Agreements.

In the interview, don Ruiz outlines his two versions of truth what we perceive as humans and the truth that just exists. He notes that humans have the ability to perceive the truth all the time, but many people dont acknowledge how they distort the truth to create their own personal story or account of what is real. The real truth, he says, is something that cant be explained by words; its an existence that is merely perceived.

Don Miguel explained how people use their perceptions to shape the truth, to describe who they are and what they believe, without seeing how societal or even personal systems of belief, cultural norms and upbringings shape what they know to be true. We understand only what we learn, notes don Miguel.

This idea of perception-based truth is one of the primary points in don Miguel's Toltec teachings. The Toltec philosophy is grounded in simplicity and common sense. Through his books and teachings, don Miguel Ruiz provides easily accessible lessons in simple, common-sense psychology, building a set of tools that anyone can use to heal themselves regardless of their situation. He reminds his students that life is focused on the person experiencing it though perceptions, beliefs, and awareness.

Through this knowledge, he teaches people to overcome their own obstacles to alleviate suffering. In the same way, these teachings can be applied on a more widespread scale. Becoming more aware of societally constructed truths, don Miguel's students have the ability to make change within their communities because they have the ability to challenge these so-called truths. This means that communities like Women For One have the power to make changes by shedding light on powerful community leaders, spiritual teachers, and amazing women from around the globe.

Women For One is a global community of women who are working to change communities for the better by promoting awareness, authenticity, and empowerment worldwide. Through the Women For One website, they share stories written by women around the world, interviews with authentic and inspiring people, life-changing books, and chances for community advocacy. Only 1 in 4 teens meets federal fitness guidelines

Posted: at 7:54 am

CHICAGO Young teens aren't exactly embracing the government's Let's Move mantra, the latest fitness data suggest.

Only 1 in 4 U.S. kids aged 12 to 15 meet the recommendations -- an hour or more of moderate to vigorous activity every day.

The results are based on about 800 kids who self-reported their activity levels and had physical exams as part of the 2012 National Youth Fitness Survey.

Government researchers won't call the results disappointing, but lead author Tala Fakhouri of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, "There's always room for improvement."

The CDC released partial results Wednesday from the fitness survey, which involved kids aged 3 to 15. Other results from the same survey are pending and include fitness data based on more objective measures including treadmill tests.

Fakhouri said the nationally representative results provide useful information for initiatives that aim to increase kids' fitness, including the Let's Move anti-obesity campaign launched by first lady Michelle Obama in 2010.

Kids in the survey reported on which physical activities they did most frequently outside of school gym class -- basketball for boys and running for girls.

While few met guidelines established in 2008 for activity that raises the heart rate and makes you breathe harder, most said they did at least an hour of exercise at that level during the previous week. Overall, about 25 percent said they got an hour of that kind of exercise every day

Obese kids were less active than normal-weight girls and boys. Overweight girls were slightly less active than normal-weight girls, but levels were similar among overweight and normal-weight boys.

"It's definitely very concerning to see that our kids are engaging in such a limited amount of physical activity each day when we are still battling" an obesity epidemic, said Dr. Stephen Pont, an Austin, Texas, pediatrician and chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics' section on obesity.

Survey Finds 3 Out Of 4 Kids Not Getting Enough Excercise

Posted: at 7:53 am

By Alexandra Hill, WBGO News January 8, 2014

Listen to Report

The CDC released the results of a national fitness survey today that finds that most kids arent getting enough exercise.

The study finds that only one in four kids nationwide gets the recommended hour or more of daily exercise. Alexia Clarke is program coordinator of the New Jersey based STEPS For Kids, an organization that fights childhood obesity. She says the factors include too much technology and too little outdoor time.

Were seeing less physical activity in schools which would be a pretty consistent way for kids to meet that time. The lack of recess is something that the Institute of Medicine talked about last year with the weight of the nation as a need that has to be addressed bringing more physical activity into schools.

Clarke says the obesity rate among children in New Jersey has stabilized in recent years but adds they are still dealing with the problem of kids who are already obese.
