A Visual History Of Yoga

Posted: at 1:43 am

Long before the rise of Lululemon stretch pants and Om-symbol T-shirts, the ancient spiritual practice of yoga was steeped in a rich artistic tradition. Yoga: The Art of Transformation at the Smithsonians Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is the worlds first exhibit on the art of yoga, featuring over 130 objects dating from the third to the 20th century. With three massive stone yogini goddesses from a 10th-century South Indian temple and Thomas Edisons 1906 film Hindoo Fahkir, the first movie produced about India, the exhibition enlightens visitors as to what Downward Facing Dog is really all about.

These works of art allow us to trace, often for the first time, yogas meanings across the diverse social landscapes of India," Debra Diamond, the museums curator of South Asian art, said in a statement. "United for the first time, they not only invite aesthetic wonder, but also unlock the past--opening a portal onto yogas surprisingly down-to-earth aspects over 2,000 years."

This visual history shatters some stereotypes: we usually think of yogis as peaceful, but the Battle at Thaneshwar, a watercolor from India dating from 1590, depicts bands of armed yogis brawling over bathing rights at a sacred river. The flying yogini goddess bares her teeth and clutches a sword. And in Misbah the Grocer Brings the Spy Parran to his House, we learn that since the second century, many yogis freelanced as spies.

It also clears up confusion about the infinite universe of yoga and the countless styles, from Tantra to Bhakti to Hatha, as well as yogas philosophical underpinnings in Jain, Buddhist, Sufi, and Hindu traditions.

In-gallery yoga classes are being held twice a week, giving visitors the rare chance to attempt crow pose in front of fierce life-sized yogini goddesses. Gazing upon a bronze sculpture from the year 1250 of Vishnu in his Man-Lion Avatar, you cant help but wonder what hed make of the millions of modern yogis squeezing rubber mats into sweaty classrooms, clutching Smart Waters, and sighing to Enya.

Yoga: The Art of Transformation is on view until January 26th.

Hilaria in talks to open her own yoga studio

Posted: at 1:43 am

If you think youve seen enough of Alec Baldwins lithe wife, Hilaria, and her ubiquitous yoga poses, think again. Hilaria who was this week seen striking a traffic-stopping pose on a Manhattan street in stilettos and leaning on baby daughter Carmens stroller as Alec snapped photos is in talks to be the face of a yoga studio, so that New Yorkers can get a body (and a husband) just like hers.

Sources tell us that Hilaria had been talking to SoulCycle about a yoga studio, but the discussion ended when the company was acquired by luxury gym chain Equinox.

Now Hilaria, who is an instructor at Yoga Vida in NYC, is talking to others about financing a new yoga studio, with herself as the face.

Hilaria and her fiery spouse were spotted taking a meeting about the yoga project at Souen in the Village, over the weekend.

Hilaria, 30, has promised to Instagram a picture of herself in a yoga pose every day of 2014.

Her rep said, Hilarias always open to new opportunities but has no plans beyond Yoga Vida. The photos are for fun, not to promote anything.

Laughter yoga class is 'bubble bath for the soul'

Posted: at 1:43 am

In the sunlit studio at the Center for Building Hope, it's easy to pick out who will be leading the laughter yoga class. The class is about to start and 13 people are seated in folding chairs in a big circle.

There she is -- Trish Engert, the woman who will be helping the class giggle and guffaw without telling a single joke.

A green beanie topped with a silver propeller is on her head and she's wearing a bright red T-shirt, appropriately draped with a frothy lavender boa. The T-shirt says "Laugh Until It Helps." She has props, a red and yellow clown's horn that makes circus-like beeps, and a wand with glittering streamers.

Most of the people in the circle have never taken a laughter yoga class.

Some have never heard of it until now. They had seen the class listed on the center's events calendar. Figuring it was a regular type of yoga class, despite the name, they showed up with mats.

The mats are unnecessary because no one is going to be lying down. But halfway through the class everyone will be on their feet in the center of the circle for a vigorous group mingle. They'll be flapping their arms like a chicken and laughing like a chicken, if a chicken could laugh -- ha-ha-squawk!

They'll be doing all kinds of laughs, the wicked witch's cackle, a little girl's he-he-he giggle, Bug Bunny's taunt, in other interactions. They'll stand in a circle to do the hokey-pokey, singing the song but with ha-ha-ha instead of words.

First the warm-up and introduction: Seated in their chairs, they go around the circle one-by-one, making up a laugh or doing their own. Despite being on the spot, they're good sports. One woman tries out a whinny-sounding giggle.

Engert has chosen an assistant and given her the wand with streamers. The assistant is instructed to randomly shake the streamers over someone's head throughout the class. Everyone is supposed to stop and applaud the classmate being streamed. They do so with enthusiasm, just short of jumping up and saying bravo.

By now, everyone is grinning and looking lighthearted. Smiling broadly seems like a natural response to being amid what feels like a live laughter soundtrack.

Yoga balls instead of chairs for 3rd grade classroom

Posted: at 1:43 am

NORTH CHARLESTON (WCSC) -

Out with the chairs and in with something bouncy. Third graders in a North Charleston classroom are using yoga balls instead of chairs.

Some may refer to them as stability balls, exercise or yoga balls. The inflatable balls are usually seen in gyms and even in work offices.

A teacher at Windsor Hill Arts Infused Elementary School decided to do away with chairs to challenge her students.

So far this is the only class at the school using yoga balls.

9-year-old Camden Crummey said, "Something fun to play with while you're still listening and learning."

Camden and his classmates may seem distracted by the bouncing, but their teacher Alisha Bailey says they don't notice the bouncing.

"There's a lot of studies showing that the more movement you have while you're moving, you're learning more because you have more oxygen flowing into your brain, so you're thinking more," said Bailey."

The kids follow all of the rules Bailey has put in place.

8-year-old Jada Mercer said, "You can't bounce too high and you have to keep your feet on the ground."
