Former Cork goalkeeper Elaine Harte has described the venue selection for some high profile ladies football games as scandalous.

Harte said: We have to look at where we play our matches. Its scandalous.

Over the years weve played All-Ireland semi-finals and quarter-finals in venues in remote areas, and I dont mean to offend those areas, but a lot of the time theyre out of the way for supporters to get to.

I think if the right people were asked in advance if we could use their facilities, it wouldnt be a problem.

The mens GAA in general dont begrudge us at all, its the opposite in fact; they enjoy watching our games and would encourage us to use their facilities, said the 33-year-old, who recently retired from intercounty football.

TG4 have been excellent as regards the promotion of the sport due to the number of games they now televise, in that people who usually wouldnt watch the game have started to.

Feuding between families is so bad in one city community that garda have to be called to protect children in the school playground.

The situation was highlighted by Brendan Kenny, former chief executive of Limerick Regeneration and now assistant Dublin City manager, who said he feared for community support programmes in both cities.

I would be worried that with the cuts and reductions in services, that things may go backwards so we need to keep concentration, said Mr Kenny. There is a certain complex in Dublin at the moment where the teachers are very concerned that the school is going to close because there is a serious feud between local families. Garda are often called to protect children in the playground. It is very worrying.

Parts of Limerick could also regress, he warned: In Limerick the situation was appalling, worse than anything I dealt with in Dublin.

Mr Kenny has a long involvement in regeneration projects and areas covered by the Rapid and drug task force initiatives. However, he said: We have not been able to convert any of these disadvantaged areas into advantaged areas.

A man lost the sight in one eye in a row sparked by a posting on Facebook, a court has heard.

The court heard that Doherty kept confronting Mr Moss in the smoking area of Trinity Rooms nightclub and the men were ejected by security.

State Counsel John OSullivan said the last thing Mr Moss remembers was being punched in the face by Doherty outside the club. Mr Moss lost the sight in one eye, had three teeth knocked out during the assault, and suffered cuts, bruises and a fractured elbow.

Detective Garda Ivan Muldoon said there had been ill feeling between the men since they spent their schooldays together.

Defence counsel Anthony Sammon said something posted on Facebook had upset Doherty, adding to the bad blood.

Judge Carroll Moran adjourned the case to July 29 on being told that compensation of 7,000, along with monthly payments of 200, will be paid to the injured party.

Judge Moran said that the payment of compensation did not mean a prison sentence would not be imposed. He noted that Doherty had no previous convictions.

BANGKOK: Thai stocks retreated on Friday as investors cut some risk exposure after a blast at an anti-government protest rally, with most others in Southeast Asia rangebound amid Asian stock market weakness and downbeat results on Wall Street. Thai SET index finished down 0.5 percent on the day, trimming its gain on the week to 3.2 percent. It was among the region's outperformers on the week, helped by bargain hunting in a reporting season, including banking shares. An explosive device wounded 28 anti-government protesters in the Thai capital on Friday and other violence was reported after several days of relative calm when the movement appeared to be running out of steam. Vietnam was the region's bright spot. The benchmark VN Index climbed 1.88 percent, extending its winning streak to 11 sessions. It was up 4.8 percent on the week, Southeast Asia's best, ahead of Indonesia's 3.7 percent weekly gain.
