How I Make A Living As A Writer (And You Can Too)
Posted: at 2:45 pm
When I first wrote a novel in 1991, I remember walking down the road and seeing a pretty girl and thinking She might like me now. I know that a lot of what I write seems to involve whether or not women like me. But thats what I think about. I want people to like me. And, when I was younger, it was more important that women like me than that men like me.
This post originally appeared on The Altucher Confidential.
I also wanted money. I didnt want to work for a boss. That scary feeling of being called into the bosss office after you know you did something that was wrong. I put it in quotes because what does it matter now? What did it even matter then? How could you, my sweet baby, ever do something wrong? (Note: thats the sentence I would whisper to myself after being summoned to the bosss office.)
Dont you have any pride in your work?
Clean out your desk today.
Did you steal all of the paper?
Why did the office cleaning lady find 20 moldy sandwiches in your drawer?
Why didnt you test the software before it went to the client?
Whatever. Its because I was busy and no, I didnt have pride in my work. I was 22 years old and looking at women and trying to publish a novel on the side so I didnt have to work anymore. And I have no comment about the sandwiches. It took many years before I made any money as a writer. And what works then is different now. Right now its easier than ever. But the rules changed every three or four years and they will change again. Just like they change with everything in life.
By the way, that first novel, and the four that came after it, and the 50 short stories that came after it, never got published. I used to think I needed to publish something before I could feel good about myself, before I could call myself a writer, before I could have a girlfriend, before I could get a real job, before I could move to NYC. What a pathetic weight on my shoulder to think I needed something controlled by just a handful of people. Those weights stayed on my back for years.

The new format certainly offers her that chance. Each of the six core causes of stress now has its own section. With the digital format, the information can now be offered in a multi media format as well, with articles, videos, podcasts and one-click purchases on product offerings. There are also sections for childrens stress, pet stress and a highlight of scientific innovations that have been developed to make life less stressful . Many of these products are so new that the mainstream population would probably never know about them until years down the road, Angela added.
A list of pioneering scientists, psychologists and experts in the fields of nutrition, exercise and environmental issues that have all contributed to her newsletter and website http://www.attractingjoyu.com join Angela each month. The science behind workout music
Posted: at 10:44 pm
You're psyching yourself up for a morning run. Or about to climb on the elliptical for a high-energy workout. Or warming up before a weightlifting session.
What's the first thing you reach for?
Your earbuds, naturally.
Studies have shown that listening to music that fits the cadence of what you're doing - running, cycling, aerobics - makes you work harder.
"The metronome aspect, the synchronisation of movement to music, is the most important," says Carl Foster, director of the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse.
The idea of synchronisng movement to a beat is nothing new, he points out: in Roman galleys, the drumbeat drove the pace of the rowers. "But there is also the distraction and arousal that music brings," Foster says. They both matter, but it's unclear how much. "There's definitely more buried in music that affects us. But we don't know exactly how to tease it out."
HOW DO YOU PICK THE 'RIGHT' MUSIC?
If you want to make a workout mix based on tempo - or BPM, for beats per minute - various Web sites, including http://www.songbpm.com, can help you determine the tempo of your favourite music to see whether it fits your intended activity. Or you can go to sites such as http://www.motiontraxx.com that offer playlists at a certain BPM for running and cycling as well as other activities. Other sites include http://www.workoutmusic.com and http://www.powermusic.com.
"Music is positive energy," says Deekron "the Fitness DJ" Krikorian, who produces fitness playlists for MotionTraxx. "So when I put together playlists, I look for intensity, positive feeling and cohesiveness."
If he finds a song that feels right in terms of mood and intensity but has the wrong tempo, he might manipulate the BPM to fit the type of exercise intended.

Officials Act Out Disaster Scenario in Pendleton Training Exercise

Regional leaders help Marines prepare for invasion, disaster

Andrew Brunhart, general manager for the South Coast Water District, San Clemente Mayor Tim Brown, and other officials from southern Orange County became the first key area authority figures to engage in Marine Core Combat Readiness Evaluation at Camp Pendleton on Feb. 8.
MCCRE is a five-day training exercise where U.S. Marines practice protocol and drills in the event of a crisis. The exercise created a staged event, such as an invasion or catastrophe and had Marines rehearse in real time. The simulation began at 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 and finished Saturday, Feb. 8, by sunset.
On the last day, Marines helped role-playing citizens return to a safe and functioning environment. The scenario for Saturdays exercise was an invasion; the country of San Diego invaded Pendletonia. Marines had to work and cooperate with local authorities, press and civilians.
Brunhart was among a number of officials from Orange County that participated in the weekend training. While playing the role of Pendletonias city manager, Brunhart made demands and put pressure on the Marines to help decontaminate the mock villages water supply. In a major disaster a similar process would go into effect, where Brunhart would activate the SCWDs emergency operations.
In a real catastrophe there are several top priorities: protecting public health and maintaining water quality standards, also maintaining, restoring and establishing water services, Brunhart said.
Each local official involved had experiences in their careers that contributed in assisting with Saturdays training.
It was a privilege to assist with the training of those that go in harms way, Burhart said. It was heart-warming for me to reinforce what I learned, and it was, as a retired United States Navy Seabee with over 30 years of active service, I was proud to observe the readiness and dedication the United States Marines asserted today.
