If youve been working out on a regular basis, you already know that the harder you work the more your heart rate goes up. You can use your heart rate as a guide to determine if you are working at a safe intensity level in any aerobic activity. Its important to target your workout so that your heart is working at 55 percent to 85 percent of its maximum ability; this range is referred to as your submaximal range or target heart rate zone.

When treadmill walking becomes boring or tedious, incline or sprint intervals can add variety and boost the intensity of your workout. Increasing intensity for just a few minutes at regular intervals can help you gain more from...

A 41-strong team from Warrnambool academy EKB Fitness and Aerobics will compete at the three-day titles at Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre.

About half are in international-stream events which carry the reward of world championships qualification for those who impress the judges.

Coach Emma Bellman said she was confident the academy would have athletes qualify for world titles in Prague from October 21 to 26.

Among the young hopefuls are teenager Jordan Rooke, in the junior male solo section, and Hayley Dalton, in the cadet female solo.

Sisters Emma and Sophie Bellman and Aylish Auchettl make up a senior female trio called Audacity.

The academy also has two eight-member teams Fierce in senior fitness and Fusion in junior fitness hoping to book their tickets to the Czech Republic.

Barrington center offers complementary approach to neuromuscular, autoimmune treatment

Posted: at 7:54 pm

In 2001, Barrington resident Joy Wagner left her job as a nurse at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.

Wagner was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and the condition soon began to affect her vision and equilibrium, interfering with her ability to care for her children.

So she decided to do something about it, creating a fitness and rehab regimen she would eventually offer to others.

I decided to work with people like me, said Wagner, who runs the FitMS NeuroBalance Center on Hart Road. I think its just about pushing the envelope and looking under every rock.

The FitMS NeuroBalance Center is a community resource center that offers fitness and training for people living with neuromuscular and autoimmune disorders.

Our specialty is people with neuromuscular and autoimmune diseases, but its for anyone whose mobility and balance have been challenged, Wagner explained.

FitMS NeuroBalance Center offers weekly classes and one-on-one training for people with various conditions by incorporating repetitive exercises, mirrors, yoga and other forms of physical therapy.

I would describe us as complementary medicine, Wagner said, noting the goal of her programs is to tailor exercise routines to make a difference for clients, but not overwhelm or exhaust them.

Its about riding that balance, she said.

FitMS NeuroBalance Center chiropractor LeeAnn Steinfeldt said she works with Parkinsons patients, focusing on balance, muscle and strength to help the brain work with the body.

Trial was pivotal experience for Trayvon Martin's friend

Posted: at 7:54 pm

MIAMI (CNN) Sunday marked a year since George Zimmerman learned his fate in the Trayvon Martin case.

Zimmerman was acquitted of murder charges in the death of the teen.

Rachael Jeantel was on the phone with Trayvon when his fatal encounter with Zimmerman began.

A year ago, she made no secret of her feelings during a combative cross examination by the defense in Zimmerman's murder trial.

Today, she is working hard to put the past behind her and to deal with lingering regret.

When asked if she blamed herself when Zimmerman went free, Jeantel admitted, a little bit.

She thought the jurors didn't take her seriously.

They judge how they talk, how they look, how they dress, she said.

That was the beginning of an astonishing turnaround in Jeantel's life. But first she needed a lot of help.

She was suffering from post-traumatic stress, said Rod Vereen, a Miami atttorney who organized a support group he calls The Village, providing Jeantel with counseling to deal with the grief of losing her longtime friend and intense tutoring to overcome problems in school.
