Sport aerobics team vies for gold in Las Vegas
Posted: at 6:46 pm
LAS VEGAS - The best aerobic gymnasts from around the world will compete in a world class event at the Red Rock Casino Resort. For the first time, the United States has a team.
8 News NOW first reported on this elite group six months ago when they began training at Larry Lake's Gymnastics in Henderson for the upcoming world competition.
Now, the competition is days away.
Stephanie Furstahl is the gymnasts coach. She is a world class sports aerobics athlete from Hungary. She moved to the United States to train American athletes.
It's an honor, and I love it, she said. I hope my kids feel it that, even though I'm not from the U.S., my heart is with them.
The tournament has been held in Las Vegas for years, but this is the first time the United States has a team, thanks to Furstahl. It's a serious competition with serious training.
It's been kind of challenging. Coach Stephanie makes us condition a lot. It's not always that fun, said competitor Adriana Rivas.
Furstahl invited the coach who led her to world titles, Eva Szloboda, to provide final tips for her athletes.
I'm perfecting my legs. I have to get them higher, point my toes, get my arms with a lot of energy, said competitor Alize Ramos.
Szloboda is also the choreographer for some of the sport aerobics athletes for the Hungarian team. She's been judging the competitions for decades.
Overweight and obese kids are in denial about their weight, CDC says
Posted: at 6:46 pm
New government data suggest a non-medical cause of Americas childhood obesity crisis: denial.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 48% of obese boys and 36% of obese girls think their weight is about right. Among kids and teens who were merely overweight, 81% of boys and 71% of girls also judged their weight to be about right.
Those figures are based on interviews with American children who were between the ages of 8 and 15 during the years 2005 through 2012. As part of the CDCs ongoing National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey, they had their height and weight measured and they answered questions from interviewers. Among them: Do you consider yourself now to be fat or overweight, too thin or about the right weight?
Overall, 30.2% of the kids gave an answer that wasnt in line with their actual body mass index, according to the report from the CDCs National Center for Health Statistics. That corresponds to about 9.1 million American kids who have the wrong idea about their weight status.
Roughly 20% of these kids had a healthy weight but mistakenly thought they were either too thin or too fat. But the overwhelming majority were low-balling their weight.
Boys were more likely than girls to think their extra pounds were normal, the CDC researchers found. In addition, Mexican American kids were more likely to suffer from weight status misperception compared with African Americans, who in turn were more likely to have it than white kids. The prevalences for the three groups were 34.4%, 34% and 27.7%, respectively. (Figures for Asian Americans werent reported.)
Children between the ages of 8 and 11 were more likely to get their weight status wrong (33%) than kids between the ages of 12 and 15 (27%). Also, the higher a childs family income, the less likely he or she was to have the wrong idea about his or her body weight.
All of this matters because overweight and obese kids aren't likely to slim down if they think their weight is just fine. Kids who are overweight or obese are likely to carry those extra pounds with them into adulthood, leading to a host of health problems that add up to $19,000 in extra medical costs over a lifetime.
"Understanding the prevalence of weight status misperception among U.S. children and adolescents may help inform public health interventions," the CDC researchers wrote.
By definition almost all kids those between the 5th percentile to just under the 85th percentile are considered to have a healthy weight. Only kids with a BMI that puts them at or above the 85th percentile to just under the 95th percentile are officially overweight, and those at or above the 95th percentile are classified as obese. In addition, kids below the 5th percentile are considered underweight.

Losing sleep over excercise is hurting you: study
Posted: at 6:46 pm
TIME spent exercising should not cut into sleep time if people want to get the best health benefits, a new Australian study has found.
The study, by University of Queensland and University of South Australia researchers, found how different exercise schedules could have different effects on health.
It analysed the exercise habits of 129 previously inactive adults aged 18 to 60 years old for six weeks, with three groups exercising for between 150 to 300 extra minutes a week.
The study, UQ research fellow Dr Sjaan Gomersall said, found as people tried to fit in exercise around work, sleep and relaxation time, it could have both positive and negative overall effects.
"When people undertake a new exercise program, the time spent in other domains, such as sleep or screen time, must be reduced to accommodate the new activity," Dr Gomersall said.
"If a new exerciser chooses to reduce screen time to accommodate exercise, for example, then there will presumably be additional health benefits, given that sedentary time is a risk factor for mortality and cardiovascular disease.
"Conversely, if they choose to sleep less, the benefits of physical activity may be reduced and ultimately lead to negative health outcomes such as obesity and depression."
It also found that starting an exercise regime could cut down the time spent watching television by up to 50 minutes a day.
"However, results also showed that this positive health outcome was offset by participants spending an extra 30 minutes a day using computers," Dr Gomersall said.
"This may indicate they were taking work home because they left early to exercise.

Politicians voice concern over flag burning
Posted: at 6:46 pm
Senior politicians are voicing their concerns over the protest burning of the Israeli flag.
Photos of a weekend protest in Auckland against Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip show a hand-painted Israeli flag, with a Nazi swastika in place of the Star of David, being waved in the protest.
The Israeli and US flags being burnt.
Labour MP David Shearer understands the anger that exists around the Gaza situation but says flag burning's not appropriate.
New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters holds a similar view - he says if it goes too much further there will be violence and that won't be tolerated.
However, there's alleged bad behaviour by members of Mana.
The party's under fire, after its flags were seen next to burning Israeli flags at a protest in Auckland on Saturday.
Jewish Council president Steven Goodwin says Nazi swastikas were also painted on some of the flags.

LDF workers stage dharna against hike in prices of food items
Posted: at 6:46 pm
CPI(M) led LDF Opposition workers today staged a dharna before the Secretariat here, demanding that the Centre and State governments check rise in prices of essential commodities.
Inaugurating the agitation, CPI(M) veteran and leader of Opposition in the Assembly, V S Achuthanandan criticised the economic policies of both the NDA government led by Narendra Modi and Oommen Chandy led UDF government in Kerala.
"Both the Modi and Chandy governments are responsible for the spurt in prices of food items', he said, adding LDF would intensify its agitation in the coming days.
Terming the rise in prices as 'war on people', he said the policies pursued by the NDA are totally against the interests of the common man.
Alleging that the NDA government has ignored Kerala, Achuthanandan said the Railway budget had not considered any of the state's long-pending demands.
In the general budget also, the state was neglected, he said, adding Kerala's dream scheme like All India Institute of Medical Sciences was not sanctioned.
"The common man's life has become strenuous due to increase in prices of commodities. The price of one kg rice which was Rs 21 a few months back has jumped to Rs 40 to Rs 45. Similar is the case with prices of vegetables," he added.
Achuthanandan also took a dig at Chandy, saying he had no time to intervene in matters related to the people, but was mainly engaged in the excercise of cabinet reshuffle.
The CPI(M) leader made it clear that government cannot 'hoodwink' the people with this action.
Several LDF MLA's were among those who participated in the dharna.
