The music pounded, the liquor flowed, dancers filled the floor and khinkali meat dumplings andkababi skewers staples of traditional Georgian cuisines sat on almost every table.

That was back in February, before Nana Shrier, the owner of the hip Tel Aviv bar and restaurant Nanuchka, saw a television news report about factory farming. Then everything changed.

Abhorred by how animals are treated in industrial meat and dairy production, Shrier stripped all the animal products from the menu from cheese to eggs to chicken and steak and made the restaurant entirely vegan.

It wasnt an easy shift. Retaining the restaurants Georgian character has forced Shrier to get creative, finding meat substitutes and trying new dishes. She has also noticed that customers order less hard alcohol when they dont eat meat. But none of that matters to her.

We understood that theres no price worth paying to create animal products, to see, to sell, to produce or to buy them, she said. The atmosphere is pleasant, but I would have paid any price. I would have lost half my business for this.

According to the activist group Vegan-Friendly, Shrier is one of approximately 300,000 vegans in Israel. At nearly 4 percent of the country, activists say Israel has the highest per capita vegan population of anywhere in the world. And the trend appears to be accelerating.

A survey conducted in January found that 8 percent of Israelis are vegetarian and nearly 5 percent are vegan. Four years ago, Israels Central Bureau of Statistics reported thatjust2.6 percent of Israelis were vegetarian or vegan.

Some 7,000 Israelis have accepted the Challenge 22 to go vegan for 22 days since the initiative was launched in May by the animal rights group Anonymous (no connection to the hacker collective). About 250 Israeli restaurants are now certified vegan friendly by the group of the same name, meaning that at least one-quarter of their dishes contain no animal products.

Israel is also frequently included on lists of the worlds most vegan-friendly nations, thanks in part to the fact that national staples like falafel and hummus contain no animal products. And on Monday, Tel Avivs second annual Vegan-Fest drew more than 10,000 attendees to a festival of food, crafts and music that organizers claimisthe worlds largest.

Israelis growing hungry for vegan diet

AMAN was horrified to find a lump of raw meat in his vegetarian snack.

Lee Rose, 36, of Thorney Bay Road, Canvey, was about to tuck into the dip selection he had bought from Morrisons, on Canvey, when he saw a flash of bright red.

Mr Rose said: There was a lump of rawmeat in it.

It was bright red and raw. I was absolutely horrified.

Luckily, Mr Rose had not eaten any of the dip selection when he made the discovery.

He said: It was as clear as day and was a good two inches big and was just sitting there in the Thousand Island dip. I took the lid off it and that was enough for me. I nearly dropped it on the floor in shock.

Its disgusting and I wont be shopping at Morrisons again.

Morrisons Thousand Island dressing usually contains soured cream, tomato puree, pickled gherkin and red pepper.

Mr Rose said he had not been offered compensation when he returned the dip to staff at the Northwick Road store a claim Morrisons says is not true.

He said: I took it back to them and they apologised and said they would send it away, but Im not happy about it. It has never happened to me before.

Disgusted Lee finds raw meat in vegetarian dip

US-based food processing company Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) has agreed to acquire natural and organic food producer Specialty Commodities (SCI) for $170m.

The transaction, subject to regulatory approval, will provide Specialty Commodities' suppliers, colleagues and customers with ADM's supply-chain and manufacturing capabilities.

Post completion, Specialty Commodities will become part of ADM's new WILD Flavors and Specialty Ingredients business unit. Its majority owner is Goldner Hawn Johnson & Morrison.

ADM chairman and CEO Patricia A. Woertz said: "One of the ways we are improving returns and reducing the volatility of our earnings is through the expansion of our specialty ingredients portfolio.

"Consumers around the world are demanding higher-quality, better-tasting, healthier foods with clean labels. We are continuing to add new product streams to our portfolio to enhance our capabilities to serve our customers as they respond to this demand."

Specialty Commodities processes and distributes healthy ingredients, including nuts, fruits, seeds, legumes and ancient grains for snack, ice cream, cereal, nutrition bar, health food, bakery, pet food and bird food producers.

Specialty Commodities founding partner and CEO Larry Leitner said: "SCI's suppliers, colleagues and customers will benefit from ADM's world-class innovation, supply-chain and manufacturing capabilities. And with our complementary geographies, similar business models, and shared focus on quality and customers, we see a bright future for the business."
