Many commuters experienced major delays this morning with rail and road users affected by the high winds caused by the remnants of Hurricane Gonzalo which struck Ireland overnight.

Winds of 115km/h were experienced in Donegal earlier this morning while north Connact and Leinster are also experiencing extremely windy conditions with gusts of 90km/h to 110km/h.

Motorists are being warned that there is debris on many routes and drivers of high-sided vehicles have been urged to take extra care on exposed stretches of road. Motorists are advised to excercise caution with fallen trees and other debris reported on some roads while there have also been reports of wheelie bins being blown onto roads causing hazards.

Rail users are continuing to face delays although services have now resumed between Malahide and Clongriffin after Iarnrd Eireann workers cleared a tree which had fallen onto the overhead power lines at Portmarnock.

A number of flights between Dublin and London and four ferry sailings have been cancelled today.

Aer Lingus cancelled four flights to and from Heathrow after the London airport requested all airlines to reduce their flight schedules by 10 per cent. A spokeswoman said affected passengers were informed of the cancellations yesterday and have been accommodated on alternative flights.

The ferry operator has also cancelled the 2.30pm Dublin Swift sailing between Dublin to Holyhead and also the 5.15pm Holyhead to Dublin swift sailing. A number of other sailings are subject to delays.

Rehashed issues, rehashed answers

Posted: at 11:44 am

Since the 1960s, student activists have been exercising their freedom of speech to demonstrate against the Philippine government regarding graft and corruption, and poverty.

The students were then joined by farmers, drivers and then by educators in carrying placards expressing their legitimate grievances.

According to Eckhart Tolle, author of the book A New Earth, a grievance is a strong negative emotion connected to an event in the sometimes distant past that is being kept alive by compulsive thinking, by retelling the story in the head or out loud of what someone did to me or what someone did to us. In other words, a long-standing resentment is called a grievance.

Why are these demonstrators always in the streets, raising the same concerns and issues? Has the government addressed these issues?

The controversial overpriced Makati City Hall Bldg. 2 has raised some eyebrows. In the subsequent Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing some information came to light that has questioned the integrity of Vice President (VP) Jejomar Binay.

The second Head of State through his lawyer quickly denied the allegations. I am a firm believer of the adage that where there is smoke, there is fire.

Months before the 300-hectare Laguna property was discovered and investigated by the Senate, somebody handed me a three-page file containing the alleged ill-gotten wealth of the Binay family.

Since it is difficult for me to verify the document as the government offices that would give credence to the report are all located in Metro Manila or in its neighboring towns, I will venture to simply ask the following questions:

Do the Binays have a 10-hectare mango farm? Does the family own two condominium units in Rockwell? Does the VP own a three-story mansion with elevator in Banuyo St., San Antonio Village in Makati? Six rest houses in different locations in Luzon are allegedly owned by the Binays. The file also contained alleged bogus projects amounting to millions of pesos. Hmm, if these allegations are of merit, Vice President Binay would be in hot water if he has not declared these in his statement of assets and liabilities.

What does being ‘spiritual but not religious’ really mean?

Posted: at 11:44 am

"Spiritual But Not Religious" is a phrase you hear more and more these days and with good reason. In 2012, a Pew Foundation survey on religion found that almost 20 percent of Americans placed themselves in the category of "unaffiliated."

That 20 percent unaffiliated translates into a whole lot of people. It's a big enough number that, most likely, your next airport van ride will include someone without traditional religious attachments onboard.

But to really appreciate the importance of this 20 percent in the landscape of American life, you have to consider one more number: 10 years.

That's how long it's been since philosopher Sam Harris published his book The End of Faith and kick-started the New Atheist movement. Along with writers like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett, Harris was unapologetic in his denunciation of literalist religious beliefs.

Looking back, New Atheism was at its best when it provided a clear defense of reason against the many fundamentalisms that only look backward. At its worst, however, it dismissed all experiences of "spirituality" as worthless, pudding-headed confusion.

For persistent readers, however, Harris's now decade-old book held a surprise. In the last chapter, this fiery critic of religion argued that real spiritual experience was not only possible, it was a kind of birthright. I remember getting to that last chapter and thinking, "Whoa, what just happened?

What happened was Harris, like many in the 20 percent, had always found meaning in experiences of personal spirituality. Those experiences now take center stage in Harris's latest book Waking Up.

Harris's first step on this new journey is to give up being squeamish about language. As he writes:

"... I will use spiritual, mystical, contemplative and transcendent without apology. However, I will be precise in describing the experiences and methods which merit those terms."

Next, he tells us why these experiences matter: "Spirituality begins with a reverence for the ordinary that can lead us to insights and experiences that are anything but ordinary."
