Taking The Minecraft Vegetarian Challenge

Posted: January 11, 2015 at 10:53 pm

Minecraft is a lot of different things to a lot of different people; a place to build a word processor, recreate Westeros or trap incredible monsters. For many players it's simply about survival, which means making sure you have shelter at night, forging armor and weapons with which you can fend off attackers, and somehow finding food to keep your hunger meter full. It's that last one that presented a problem for me when I picked the game up again recently.

I decided to stop eating meat over a year ago, around the time I turned 25. My family has a history of heart disease, and the way I saw it my life was practically half over. I also really like animalsand not just dogs, although they're my favoritesand I got tired of killing them for their meat when I know full well there are ample alternatives in our modern society. I had to make a change. I started going to the gym, which hasn't worked out so well, and I stopped eating meatwhich has.

So now I'm a vegetarian, and I'm much happier. But when I started playing the Xbox One edition of Minecraft I found myself in a curious situation: how to play Minecraft successfully without killing any animals?

When Minecraft arrived on Xbox 360 in 2011 my friends and I delighted for hours and hours in the game's splitscreen mode, crafting elaborate bases in which we squirreled away our valuables and set traps for one another. We experimented with redstone; I made a complex five-way track switcherstill one of my proudest gaming achievementswith help from a diagram online. We harassed one another constantly, but we played on "peaceful" difficulty so we wouldn't have to deal with destructive creepers and that pesky hunger meter too.

I did occasionally crank up the difficulty, on Xbox 360 and again later when I built my first gaming PC. I'm not opposed to a challengethe Souls games are some of my absolute favoritesand I wanted to feel that struggle. But the hunger thing vexed me, and I found myself spending way too much time hunting for pigs whose flesh I could roast for food. It was never long before the chicken drumsticks that represent your hunger started ticking down again, and farming seemed boring, so I eventually went back to peaceful mode and then lost interest in the game for a time.

When the Xbox One version came out I upgraded without thinking, knowing I'd probably get back into it at some point. And my prediction became prophesy when my girlfriend's Minecraft-obsessed brother came to visit, his laptop in his bag and his pixelated pickaxe never far away. "Two can play that game," I thought, meaning it literally. So I started it up and, knowing I'd quickly grow bored playing the same way I did three years ago, I selected "normal" difficulty. Daring, I know.

I knew I could spend my time hunting pigs through the woods if I wanted to, but I wanted to see if I could play Minecraft as I live life: by doing as little harm as possible to my friendly animal neighbors.

But I'm also not the first person who's had this thought. There are Minecraft Forum posts suggesting rules for a vegetarian challenge, and the same can be found on many other online communities. Some thoughtful players simply pose the question: "Do vegetarians avoid killing animals in-game?" One respondent says that any who do can't tell the difference between reality and fantasy, which I don't necessarily agree with. Imposing your own external rule set on a game is nothing new; it's called a metagame, and it's common in communities ranging from competitive first-person shooter players to avid Pokmon trainers.

Moroccan stuffed peppers with couscous

Posted: at 10:53 pm

This recipe is for Moroccan stuffed peppers was inspired by a similar one in Cooking Light that uses chutney. I have opted to forgo that and instead add in some shallots, a few different seasonings, and pine nuts, which I love. You can see the original recipehere.

I like that stuffed peppers can either serve as a side dish for a meal that might include something like shish kebabs or koftas, or they be a vegetarian main dish if you have 2 halves for your entree. They are very satisfying.

Moroccan stuffed peppers with couscous Servings:2-4

3 large red bell peppers 1 cup chicken broth *optional may use vegetable broth for a vegetarian option 1 generous pinch saffron 1/4 cup golden raisins 1 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon tomato paste 1/4 cup toasted pine nuts 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 cup chopped onion 1-2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 cup uncooked whole wheat couscous 2 scallions, sliced 1 tablespoon chopped fresh jalapeno or Serrano pepper 1/4 cup coarsely chopped pitted kalamata olives Salt and black pepper to taste 2 ounces feta cheese, crumbled

1. Cut peppers in half and remove seeds and membranes. Place peppers in a microwave safe dish, cover and cook for 5 minutes. Place peppers cut side up in a baking dish and set aside.

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Heat chicken (or vegetable) broth to very hot and stir in the saffron, raisins, coriander, cumin, and tomato paste. Allow to sit for about 10 minutes or so.

3. Heat a nonstick skillet and toast pine nuts until golden, then set aside to cool. Heat olive oil in the same skillet and add onions and garlic, saute until the onions are golden and starting to caramelize. Stir in the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Stir in the couscous, scallions, chopped jalapeno and olives; season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from heat; cover and allow to sit for five minutes to absorb broth.

4. Remove lid and fluff couscous with a fork, then spoon into the cavities of the halved peppers. Top with crumbled feta cheese. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 375 degrees F., for 30 minutes, then remove foil and bake uncovered for 15 minutes more or until feta is lightly browned.

Terrorists usher in the end of satire

Posted: at 10:51 pm

Dear Terrorists:

OK, you win. We surrender.

Never thought Id say that, but then, I never thought Id see gunmen burst into the offices of a satirical magazine as happened last Wednesday in Paris. Never thought Id see 12 people killed most were employees, two were police officers because a magazine published provocative cartoons mocking extremist Islam.

Here in the United States, as in France, as in pretty much every free place on the globe, weve cherished this crazy idea that people should be free to say whatever they darn well please. We have particularly believed in the power of humor, not simply as a means of expression, but as a way of puncturing the powerful and pricking the pretentious, of defying those who seek to make us fear.

But the bloodshed at Charlie Hebdo magazine forces us to realize the error of our ways. So I am here to announce that you have achieved your goal. From this moment on, no one on the planet the entire planet, do you hear? will ever, ever, ever again make fun of you. This is The End of Satire.

So youll hear no more cracks about Osama bin Gotten.

No one will ever again say youre full of Shiite.

And you wont have to hear anyone sing, Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran to the tune of an old Beach Boys song.

I even hear Jon Stewart is quitting The Daily Show to host a program on The Food Network, specializing in New Jersey cuisine. Mad magazine is going out of business and its famed mascot, the infidel Alfred E. Neuman, just became the latest journalist beheaded by the Islamic State. Bill Maher is teaching religious studies in Mississippi, Lewis Black is practicing Zen Buddhism and Stephen Colbert now claims Stephen Colbert was nothing more than a character he played.

You know, this isnt easy for us. In America, we have a tradition, stretching from Mark Twain to Will Rogers, to Dick Gregory to Norman Lear to the aforementioned Jon Stewart, of using humor to make trenchant political points. Probably, the French have a similar tradition.
