How to Understand Corporate Branding vs. Personal Branding for Success

Posted: October 28, 2022 at 1:46 am

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Successful branding is one of the keys to attracting customers and consistently growing a business. Most marketers would say that their brand strategy is at the core of their marketing strategy.

But are they referring to their corporate branding strategy or personal branding efforts? How will these answers affect the company's overall strategy? Here are the answers.

Traditionally, the term branding is associated with large companies like Coca-Cola, Apple and Marlboro. These companies are arguably some of the United States' most recognizable corporate brands. Their brand represents the identity of the company.

In the words of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a brand is much more than a logo. It is "the set of physical attributes of a product or service, together with the beliefs and expectations surrounding it." Put simply, successful corporate branding evokes an idea in the audience's mind that reaches beyond the corporate identity and includes the values and propositions the company stands for.

A personal brand might incorporate the same elements but it stretches to include the person, their skills, their qualifications and the beliefs and expectations their audiences attach to them.

Related: Six Reasons Branding Is More Important Than Ever Before

Just a few decades ago, very few CEOs of leading brands were widely known to the public. There are only a handful of notable exceptions like Apple founder Steve Jobs, whose personal brand has been inextricably linked to the Apple brand.

The advent of social media and digital marketing has changed the playing field for corporate and personal branding. Traditional company leaders who used to live in relative obscurity have become far more visible to a wider audience. Unintentionally, they developed a personal brand by default, which needed to be carefully managed.

On the other hand, charismatic business founders have deliberately used their personal brands and platform to advance their companies' fortunes. Some specifically established themselves as thought leaders in their field, building their brand as part of the organization's marketing strategy.

Right now, there is a growing group of business owners who are their own brands. Life coaches, celebrity chefs and others are using their brand to support their corporate brand. Essentially, their personal brand is their business. Social media influencers, for example, use their brand to support corporate brands.

Connecting personal and corporate branding can work to the advantage of both sides, creating synergies that help both corporations and individuals expand their audience. Because of this, it does not necessarily make a difference whether the personal or corporate brand came first.

Corporations benefit by becoming more relatable with the help of a human face or faces to represent them. Rather than being seen as an institution, those businesses are recognized for their humanity, breaking down barriers between businesses and consumers. In the long term, the business can use personal connections to build trust and sales.

Balancing corporate and personal branding is not always straightforward. Just decades ago, corporations did not need to consider their employees' brands or how employees interacted with their own brands.

Since the advent of digital marketing and especially social media marketing, the branding landscape has changed. Anyone with a social media profile is consciously or unconsciously curating their own personal brand. As part of their social media activity, employees will most likely also interact with their employer's brand.

This overlap has caused countless companies to re-evaluate their approach to branding. Should they encourage employees to talk about the company publicly? What happens when unhappy employees use their platform to vent their frustrations?

In light of these concerns, it may seem like a good idea to ban employees from interacting with the company's social media, but that approach is unrealistic. Instead, most companies today choose to encourage employees to share content and expand the business's reach. They are taking advantage of the increased credibility consumers attach to information that is shared by an individual rather than a corporation.

Other companies even leverage the power of personal brands through high-profile talent hires.

Leveraging corporate and personal branding means cooperating to find a strategy that benefits both parties.

As an employer, it is generally not realistic to forbid the use of social media at work or during working hours. However, it makes sense to create easy-to-follow social media guidelines. Companies are asking employees to be honest about their employment, focus on positive topics without slagging competitors and generally use their best judgment with social media.

Encouraging employees to engage with the company's brand whilst building their own personal brand is mutually beneficial. The employee's personal brand can benefit from positive associations with the company. As the employee's recognition as a thought leader grows, the company gains credibility through association.

Personal and corporate brands are becoming ever more interlinked. In most cases, they are connected by default. Forward-thinking brands do best by embracing the connection and fostering positive and open communications between brands and employees. After all, each employee is also a brand ambassador.

As the demand for access to the class content kept growing amidst lots of media attention, Professor Santos created an iteration of the course for Coursera titled The Science of Well-Being so it could benefit a wider audience.

In this course, Santos has collected all the psychological science out there and come up with a step-by-step process for boosting happiness. The course focuses both on positive psychology the characteristics that allow humans to flourish, and behavioral change, or how to live by those lessons in real life. The first part of the course discusses things people often get wrong about happiness, plus aspects of our mind that make us think the way we do. Then, it goes into methods that have been scientifically proven to make us happier. The last part of the course gives learners time, tips, and social support to work on the final assignment which asks learners to apply one wellness activity aka Rewirement into their lives for four weeks.

The following topics are covered in weekly instalments:

The course content includes video lectures (shot in Santos own home with a handful of Yale students in the audience), optional readings and a lot of homework centred on daily exercises geared toward changing your habits recognizing and then dropping bad ones while developing new happier habits. In a nutshell, this course is a gold mine for life hacks.

You can either enrol in the course for $49 and get access to all course content, along with graded assignments and earn a certificate of completion at the end of the course. You can also choose to audit the course for free, in which case youll have access to course material but not graded assignments. You can upgrade to a paid certificate any time during or after the course.

What is an Ashram and What Living in the Ashram Really Means – Sadhguru

Posted: at 1:45 am

Sadhguru looks at the purpose of creating a powerful energy space like the Isha Yoga Center, and the idea behind creating such an umbrella of energy.

Read in Telugu: ?

Sadhguru: What is the purpose of living in an ashram? There are various types of ashrams. People who have not been able to take care of themselves in the outside society, their food or their wellbeing or their housing, they move into certain types of ashrams. Isha Yoga Center is not one of those ashrams. This is an ashram created for a spiritual purpose. Why does one move into an ashram space like this, which is essentially for the spiritual process? What is the ingredient which makes it into that kind of a space? What is the significance and why be in such a space?

This is a spiritual space because the necessary energy has been invested in this space. If we were as strong as the other creatures who live on the Velliangiri Mountains, we wouldnt have made this place ugly with all the buildings we would have just slept on the field.

To be in the ashram means to be under the umbrella of this energy. What is the purpose of an energy like this when it is driving many people totally insane? You stay here, you cant be here. If you leave this place, you cannot be anywhere else because the purpose of this energy is not to let you settle down.

The idea of creating an umbrella of this energy is to put your life on fast-forward.

The idea of creating an umbrella of this energy is to put your life on fast-forward. People on the spiritual path are people of unquenchable discontent. It is being propagated that spirituality means contentment. Contentment means you have contented yourself with what you have. A spiritual person means he is unwilling to settle for anything less than the Ultimate. If he is miserably discontent, he becomes ugly. If he is joyfully discontent, he is dynamic. He is a possibility all the time. He wont stay in one place. It doesnt matter how much comfort it offers, he will not stay. It is a longing not to stop, not to find a nest of comfort, not to end up in a nook that is comfortable, but to get onto the boiling main stream and go.

When we put life on a fast-forward, everything is exaggerated in your experience, both your joys and your miseries. When your pain gets exaggerated, you wonder, Why the hell this spirituality? Why did I choose this? I thought this was going to be bliss That was the advertisement at least: Inner Engineering Peak of Wellbeing. Yes, it is, but you need to understand, when you stand on the highest peak, wellbeing means you just manage to stand that you are not blown off.

There is a beautiful story in the yogic lore. Once there was a blacksmith in a village, a very poor man. It looked like he acted like a magnet to all the problems in the world. They were visiting him too often. But he was a devout, very prayerful person. Once, a friend of his who did not believe in all this came and said, What nonsense, you going on praying to your god. Look at your life! All the time you are in trouble.

So the blacksmith said, See, I know only this profession. Everything I have learned, I have learned by being a blacksmith. If I want to make a useful tool, I take a piece of steel, heat it, beat it, cool it, heat it, beat it If a piece of steel cannot take the heating and beating and cooling, then I throw it on the scrap heap. Otherwise it becomes a useful tool. So my prayer is only this: Dear god, heat me, beat me, cool me, do whatever but dont ever throw me on the scrap heap.

The scrap heap is a comfortable place. Nobody beats you, nobody heats you, nobody does anything to you, but you are on the scrap heap. You should not be afraid of pain, you should not be afraid of hardship, you should not be afraid of death. Dont put me on the scrap heap. That should be the only fear for a person on the spiritual path.

Reframed Life Coaching with Jennifer Allwood

Posted: October 20, 2022 at 1:47 am

I think that it's sometimes tempting to see someone like me who looks like they have a pretty "successful" life...happy marriage, healthy children, booming business, and assume it came easily.

But the truth is, I didn't have an easy, normal childhood and I haven't even had it easy as an adult. I have lost people dear to me. I have lost friendships. My home was totally robbed once. I have had 2 miscarriages. Jason and I have been broke. We've gotten laid off from jobs. We've been taken advantage of. We waited years and years and years to adopt. I have been rejected by my biological father and paid dearly for that. There are many things that haven't gone right or normal or as planned in my life.

But...I have refused to let trauma and hardship in the past define me today. I have worked hard to retrain my brain on how to think about all of the things that have happened to me in order to not get stuck today.

I have done tons of coaching and therapy in my life. I have had incredible success in the business coaching space coaching well over 10,000 women and making well over $10 million in recent years.

But I want to help all of the women who need additional help. The women who maybe don't have a business. The ladies who feel alone, stuck or in a rut.

So I got my life coaching certification in spring 2022 so that I have the professional tools I need to help set other women free as well. Changing how I think has been the difference maker for me and I believe is the secret to my "success."

The bible says we are to renew our mind daily (watch our thoughts). The bible says that as a man thinks in his heart, so he is. The bible is full of scriptures that teach us how important our thoughts are. And I am determined to help women think differently so that they can get different results and do all that God has for them to do on this side of Heaven.

A surreal look into the life of the ‘unloved’ coach – The Irish Times

Posted: at 1:47 am

There were quite a few surreal moments in Dalton Grants 34-minute chat on his YouTube channel with Toni Minichiello this week, in itself his decision to interview Minichiello at all more than a little odd. If he had opted to be challenging, to ask a few tough questions, then it might have been fine, but well, its hard to know where to start.

It was only last August, after all, that UK Athletics banned Minichiello for life from coaching after their investigation into him which had been prompted by complaints from multiple female athletes and coaches. They found that he had engaged in sexually inappropriate behaviour, emotional abuse and bullying during his coaching career.

Minichiellos best known charge was heptathlete Jessica Ennis-Hill who won gold at the 2012 Olympic Games, an achievement that subsequently saw him given the BBC Sports Personality of the Year coach award.

While insisting that she was never on the receiving end of any sexual behaviour, she described the allegations as shocking and upsetting, but Minichiello vehemently denied them. I have been a coach for over 30 years and while I have been robust and demanding, I have not behaved inappropriately towards any of my athletes, as very many of them would confirm, he said.

He is, he told Grant this week, intent on challenging UK Athletics findings and his ban, describing their investigation as one-sided and unfair.

Among the allegations made against him, the details of which you will be spared, were the inappropriate touching of athletes, the making of inappropriate sexual references and gestures towards them and engaging in inappropriate and sometimes aggressive behaviour, bullying and emotional abuse. An example of the latter was him making an athlete sit with a cone on her head to mimic a dunces cap.

His habit, meanwhile, of referring to a particular part of his anatomy as his spicy Italian sausage probably tells us a little more about his personality, and his levels of maturity, than we really wanted to know.

So, for Grant - a former British high jumper of note and now a coach, mentor and motivational speaker to invite Minichiello on his YouTube show was, to say the least, strange. Kelly Sotherton, another successful former British heptathlete, went a little stronger: Disgraceful.

As hard a watch as it was, not least the parts where Minichiello portrayed himself as the victim in all of this, and received a sympathetic ear from Grant, it was revealing too. And gave an even greater understanding of why it must be so hard for sports people to come forward with the kind of allegations that were made against him.

Take this exchange. (And you have to remind yourself that its not just a chat between two random blokes on the internet, its between one of the leading coaches in British athletics over the last three decades, and one of Britains top athletes during his day who was a captain of the British team, a board director for the London 2012 Olympic bid team and who is now a coach).

Minichiello: Athletes will use you, they will accuse you, and theyll abuse you. They want success, they want your knowledge, they want you to make them better ... and then eventually, theyll just abuse you because that is human nature.

Grant: Yeah, definitely... do you think theres a jealousy because of how you are and the way you coach?

Minichiello: Athletics is like life, there are elements of jealousy..

Grant: Jealousy, jealousy, jealousy!

Jealousy, jealousy, jealousy.

And then this.

Grant: Is there anything you could have done differently to protect yourself . because, you know, some people might be tactile or whatever. You must look back and say, hey, this has happened me, but why?

Tactile or whatever.

Minichiello didnt think so because, he said, society has changed massively . with Twitter and things like that.

It is a very, very different world out there certainly in the last five years it has changed phenomenally. A lot of the accusations about me are nothing to do with the modern era, theyre historical stuff. The difficulty we will find in life is that Im going to judge you by todays standards its impossible to defend yourself because the standards [now] are so vastly different.

By that logic the behaviour he was accused of was A okay back in the day. It was just robust and demanding. And if it wasnt for Twitter and things like that his career would have remained uninterrupted.

A slip by him was revealing too when he talked about his own situation after the 2012 London Games. In 2012, having won the Olympic gold medal .... having coached the Olympic gold medal..

Granted, a top-class coach makes no small contribution to an athletes success, but that slip suggested he claimed ownership of that medal, much like he appeared to claim ownership of the lives of the people he coached.

One of the charges he was found guilty of by UK Athletics: Failing to respect the athletes right to a private life by making intrusive inquiries and comments about their personal lives

Read up on any of the depressingly large number of coaches, across every sport, who have been found guilty of similar charges in recent years, including a host of them in womens football in America of late, and youll see much the same charges. That they felt so empowered, they believed they had the right to intrude on, and claim ownership of, every aspect of their charges lives.

Along with that came the belief that if an athlete was resistant to their efforts to control them then the coach would opt to try and break them like they were horses, and then rebuild them with the expectation of dependency and gratitude. Make them sit with a cone on their head to mimic a dunces cap, leave them so humiliated theyll never want to fail you again. Or, if they chose to walk away from their sport, so be it, that meant they were weak and never worth the effort. And if that left them feeling crushed as human beings, with knock-on issues, no matter.

It was great to get that insight to see what the coach goes through, Grant concluded, Minichiello having invited coaches out there who wanted the benefit of his wisdom to contact him. Because helping coaches is the way I can help the coach to help the athlete, he said.

Surreal? Certainly. Revealing? Enormously. All you could do was further salute the courage of those who come forward to expose the coaches who wrecked, or at least attempted to, their lives. Not to mention their apologists.

Jealousy, jealousy, jealousy? Good grief.
