Signal Hill 8-Year-Old Among PETAs Cutest Vegan Kids This Year
Posted: April 14, 2015 at 11:57 pm
ECHO PARK (CBSLA.com) PETA launched a national search to find Americas cutest vegan kid and foundone of them in the Southland.
When Genesis Butler of Signal Hill was just 3, she asked her mom where her chicken nuggets come from.
So, I told her the truth. I said, You know what, we kill animals for it, sweetheart. And she was devastated, said Genelle Palacio-Butler, the childs mother. She said, You know what, I dont want to do this again.
That day, Genesis decided to become a vegetarian, and three years later, she went vegan.
Because I dont believe that animals should be used for food, and I dont believe people should eat them, said Genesis, now 8.
Genesis persuadedher parents and siblings to go vegan and has now turned her attention to her classmates, who she shares her vegan meals with at lunchtime.
They actually like it. They dont really eat the cafeteria food. They always eat my food, she said.
Genesis says soy tacos are her favorite.
She has walked in a number of animal-rights protests throughout Los Angeles.
Her dream, she says, is to get the whole world to go vegan.

Arpaio to welcome Pamela Anderson to jail
Posted: at 11:57 pm
PHOENIX (KPHO/KTVK) -
Actress Pamela Anderson is going to jail Wednesday morning, but she didn't do anything wrong. She will be visiting Maricopa County Jail to get a firsthand look at Sheriff Joe Arpaio's vegetarian program.
Anderson is a longtime vegan and spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Anderson and PETA's senior vice president, Dan Mathews, will check out the MCSO's food factory then tour Tent City.
PETA applauds Arpaio's policy and is calling for jails and prisons nationwide to follow his lead.
"Sheriff Arpaio's meat-free jail policy is as bold as his animal cruelty unit," Mathews said. "PETA has helped veganize menus at universities, corporations and sports arenas and, with MCSO, a mega-size jail, as an example, will now reach out to jails and prisons."
"I believe people can be rehabilitated from the inside out," Anderson said. "Jails are full of people wanting to change, to make amends, to learn healthier habits and understand compassion and empathy."
Arpaio said the Maricopa County Jail system serves healthy, cost-effective, meat-free meals to inmates.
"I am proud of our jail system, which surely ranks among the best in the nation, and am very gratified that our vegetarian meals are being recognized and lauded by PETA today," Arpaio said in a news release. "Those meals, which translate to serving an average of 8,300 inmates each day, are both nutritious and well-balanced and lower in cost than you'll find in any other jail anywhere."
The Sheriff's Office has calculated that eliminating meat has saved the county and its taxpayers some $200,000 each year. Additional benefits include reduced electricity costs, not having to tailor a variety of meals to suit different religious convictions and other special requests, and providing healthier meals that don't spoil as quickly as animal products.

Sink your teeth into the Feast in the Field
Posted: at 11:56 pm
'OUR food, our health, our future' is the catch cry for the Clarence Valley's latest food event Feast In The Field on this Sunday
Event organisers have attracted huge interest and inquiries from foodies and growers from around the Northern Rivers region.
While tickets for the afternoon feast sold out weeks ago there are still places available for the morning session which features a masterclass for growers, chefs and produces who want to develop and grow their supply chains of native, local and organic produce.
Director for the Organic Matters Foundation (OMF) and host of the event Mike Smith said the committee was thrilled with the response from locals.
"We have had to make more places available for the industry morning session and encourage anyone who wants to learn or grow local, native and or organic food to book in ASAP," he said.
"With our inaugural event we wanted to develop relationships and build our local, native and organic food networks which supports the local and Northern Rivers economy.
"All our food for this event uses the 100 mile table principle and we really wanted to connect our farmers and food producers to our local chefs."
The morning masterclass features celebrated chef Clayton Donovan who will talk about the benefits of using native and local cuisine and produce that is grown seasonally.
Other morning key note speakers are from Macquarie University, Queen Bee Organics in QLD and local farmers who will share their stories and ideas.
One of the other food event organisers Gina Lopez said Feast In The Field also broke new ground as the first event of its kind to have a zero waste strategy in the Clarence Valley.
