"Having easy access to MSDS information on this web site allows me to choose your products that I prefer over others where the sheet is available." Department of Veterans Affairs "We appreciate your participation in this valuable service, so that I may be able to supply my customers with the most current data on your product." Authorized Commercial Equipment Service "I have been assigned the task of updating MSDS sheets, with which I have had great luck for the most part. In some cases , however, It is with great difficulty. The reason for this difficulty is the non-responsive contacts and or the outdated MSDS provided. For those of us who have this task, and are abiding by the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, we have to ensure that each MSDS is current within three years to qualify as a part of our program requirements. I think it is great what you are doing with this website." Tridon Communications "MSDS sheets are required for the use of your product in our hydraulic systems. Please send them to me so I can authorize the use of the equipment that has your oil product in it." Babcock Services "It would make my job much easier if you provided your MSDS on-line instead of having me call your company. Most companies no longer have a real person answering the phone and it takes 15 minutes per call to finally reach someone. That someone does not always know what I am talking about when I ask for a MSDS and it usually takes another 10-15 minutes to find someone who does know. Then I wait anywhere from 15 minutes to two weeks to have one faxed, emailed or mailed to me. This time line is for every MSDS I call about! Some folks flat out refuse to provide a MSDS and I have to resort to threats of calling OSHA to get them to transfer me to someone who knows what they are talking about. Considering my company uses thousands of products -- I spend a good deal of my time on the phone." Bombardier Transportation "I need MSDS for your products-posting them on your web-site would be ideal." Hewlett-Packard Company "Please list your MSDS online so users of your products can be safe." Rohm and Haas "Store named products are often impossible to find on the web (Ace Hardware store is damn near impossible!) We are a small school district and often have to buy products within our community. I am going to have to recommend that our business not use product lines in which MSDS are difficult to obtain." Sacramento County Office of Education "Some of the sites that contain MSDS links only direct you to a very unhelpful site! collecting MSDS 's is a very time consuming task, much simpler if you have a direct link right to the PDF file of an MSDS!!! Allstream Corp. "We are very much in need of updating our msds files and we are having a hard time finding the MSDS sheets we need." Beaver Dam Community Hospital "Please make your MSDSs easier to find and navigate on your web site. It drives me nuts having to drill down a dozen menus and subpages to finally find what I need." Mayview State Hospital "As regulations and enforcement tighten, we can no longer use products unless we can find current/recently reviewed MSDS." Department of Veterans Affairs

Module B: Self Awareness

Posted: at 8:47 pm

Middle school is a critical time in the life long process of establishing one's identity. The importance of self-awareness and a positive self-concept in the career development process cannot be understated. This module helps middle school students develop a greater awareness and appreciation of themselves in relationship to others, school, and the world of work. In the module, students will also have an opportunity to become aware of, explore, and develop personal interests, attitudes, and aptitudes and to understand the life career concept.

Students will understand the importance of matching career options to their personal preferences and how those preferences may change over time due to maturity and experiences. Students should complete an interest assessment, explore careers that match their interests, and decide what careers they are most interested in during their Florida CHOICES session. The career profile in Florida CHOICES will include the career cluster for each occupation.

While there are value and skills assessments in Florida CHOICES, it is recommended that students complete those assessments in high school. There are lesson plans in the Educator's Toolkit that will orient students to values and skills and how they match to occupations. The estimated number of class periods needed to cover the activities in all four lesson plans would be seven class periods.

The most effective self-awareness exercise I know – Joshua …

Posted: at 8:47 pm

Know thyself.

Every system of improving your life has some concept of increasing your self-awareness. But what is self-awareness? People with low self-awareness, who could benefit from it most, tend to understand it least. The self self-awareness is aware of refers to something different than, say, knowing you have ten fingers and breathe air.

Experience increases self-awareness best. I wrote below the most effective exercise I know of to increase your self-awareness. I often assign this exercise to my clients, usually as the first. This exercise increases your awareness of how your mind works, in particular a part of it that influences your perception of your environment and how you react to it every moment of every day.

Mental chatter (or self-talk, internal monologue, or voice of judgment, among other names)

Your mental chatter is the voice in your head that runs nearly every waking moment. It runs on and on. It communicates in English. A different part of your mind observes it. It often takes cues from your environment but can jump on its own to whatever topic. It often evaluates and judges.

Comparing mental chatter with how people answer What are you thinking? helps illuminate it. You might say Im thinking about what to eat, but your mental chatter goes more like

Im hungry I wonder what Ill eat is it 12:30 yet? oh no its only noon, its too early to eat now but Im hungry man, Ive been eating too much lately if I make it another half hour Ill be good Im so bad at controlling my diet I better work out after work today thatll be good, Ill work out then I can eat early what time is it now?

it goes on and on. The first thirty seconds of this preview to the movie Adaptation illustrates a characters mental chatter.

Like breathing, you can consciously control mental chatter but if you dont it will run on its own. Learning to control and manage your mental chatter is one of the most fundamental elements to improving your life. And awareness of your mental chatter is the foundation to managing it. Amazingly, people tend not to notice their mental chatter despite its presence nearly every waking moment of their lives, like a fish in water.

The exercise

Each time you write will probably take a few minutes. The whole exercise will take about an hour over a week or two.

At first writing your thoughts will feel like drinking from a fire hose. You cant write fast enough to keep up with your thoughts. Writing changes your thoughts, so you have to figure out how to write what you were thinking. Part of the reason to do the exercise over a week is to get past initial distractions to observe your mind at work.

To get more out of the exercise, write up what youve observed when you finish, especially trends in what you noted in step 3. To get yet more, do it with others and compare results.

EDIT: I created another self-talk exercise that builds on this one, helps build self-awareness, and gives a great social skill too http://joshuaspodek.com/communications-skills-exercises

EDIT 2: I put examples of self-talk here and here.

See the rest here:

Top 100 Personal Development Blogs for 2015 – The Start of …

Posted: at 8:46 pm

Were kicking off 2015 with an absolute bang!

Damn, I love this time of year. Its all about setting your year up for massive success and what better way of doing that then presenting you with the best personal development blogs for 2015. In fact, we bring you the Top 100!

This is the third year that we have compiled the Top 100 personal development blogs and every year we see more and more blogs adding great value to people all around the world.

I must say, because of all the awesome value that everyone is putting out there on the internet, it is getting harder and harder for personal development bloggers to make this list. So if you have made the list of the Top 100 personal development blogs this year then I, and everyone else, give you HUGE congratulations!

But firstly, I hope you had an absolutely fantastic night to bring in 2015. Sylvia and I went to a friends apartment with views across Sydney Harbour in Australia to witness some absolutely spectacular fireworks. It was the perfect way to farewell 2014 and launch into the New Year.

Now, more than ever, is the perfect time to regain focus on what you truly want in life and ensure you have the strategies and support you need to be successful at it too. The turn of the New Year gives us a clear time to separate the past and move forward into the future.

Thats why I love this time of year. Its the perfect time for creating new habits, setting your goals and making real change in your life.

Being a student of the personal development industry most of my life, Im always on the lookout for the latest and greatest resources to not only implement into my own life but to also share with those around me. Since Ive been running my own business Ive fallen more and more into the well of personal development and self-improvement and I absolutely love it! With the internet now a common place for everyone and the free economy being born, its amazing to know that what was once hidden from the majority of people and limited to a select few people paying $5,000 to access information at a weekend seminar, this information is now mostly widely available for free on the internet or at least at a much more affordable price.

The key to all this information is being able to pull whats relevant for you and being able to apply that information in a systematic and successful way that will lead you towards your desired life.

I feel honoured to know that over the last few years Ive had the pleasure of getting to know a lot of the blog owners in this list and share some great experiences with them. I can certainly say that after sifting through each and every self-improvement blog, Im highly impressed with everyones work!

It is somewhat tricky putting together a list of the Top 100 personal development blogs as it can be rather subjective in nature. To avoid this, Ive removed any of my own opinions or judgements and let pure metrics do the talking.

As with previous years, what I have created is a list of personal development blogs that rank from the most trafficked (largest number of visitors) down to the least trafficked. This list will provide you with a clear indication of how large a website is and its relative importance in the personal development blogosphere. Keep in mind, even though the blogs towards the bottom are the least trafficked, they are still within the Top 100 out of hundreds and thousands of personal development blogs out there on the internet (if not more!).

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a larger site (a site ranked towards the top) does not necessarily indicate that the site is of better quality. Generally speaking, you will find that the larger sites have been around for longer and have more blog posts and content being crawled by Google. Because of this, they are sure to have larger audiences. In saying that, however, the top sites have lasted the test of time and continue to have strong readership so they must be doing something right!

Last year we introduced the concept of magazine-styled or multiple-authored personal development websites. These are websites that originated as personal development blogs but have grown to a level where there are now multiple authors providing content on a regular basis.

Keeping in tune with last year, I have decided to again separate these blogs as they are more commercial in nature and not really websites that I would classify as blogs.

Yes, there are still some blogs in the Top 100 list that have multiple authors (including yours truly), however the key difference is that in the Top 100 list the blog owner is still the main, active contributor to the website and they are the primary person that you will be learning from.

Rather than eliminate these websites completely, I always decide to add them here as they are still fantastic resources to learn from, a great means of finding personal development professionals that you might relate with and are also great guest posting sites for those personal development bloggers that would like to write an article on another site.

If you feel your blog or website should be included above or removed from the above and added to the Top 100 below, please let me know.

http://www.startofhappiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Top-100-Personal-Development-Blogs-for-2015.pdf

This is YOUR LIST.

This is a resource that I encourage you to save and come back to on a regular basis. As we progress throughout the year we all face different challenges and often those challenges have already been faced by others elsewhere in the world. Thats when I suggest you return to this list and find the right blog to guide you.

Each personal development blog is unique and has its own style and purpose. You will also find that you will resonate strongly with some blog owners and their content and perhaps less so with others. For this reason, there is a wide variety of blogs on the list; including business, career and work, happiness, health, productivity and more. The one thing in common is that they all are themed around self-improvement.

My recommendation to you is to browse through each of the blogs below at least once and then pick out the two or three blogs that really resonate with you.

Think about the below questions as you sift through each blog:

Be sure to subscribe to their content and make personal development a key focus for you this year. Its like having a free mentor or coach.

The Top 100 Personal Development Blogs are ranked in order from the most-trafficked (largest number of visitors) to the least-trafficked (although the smallest in this case is still a Top 100 Blog!)

There are two primarytools that have been used for determining this ranking.

Firstly, I have used the Alexa rank of the website as the primary ranking method.Alexaprovides a relative ranking of each website based on the number of visitors it receives. A rank of 100,000 would mean that the site is the 100,000th most visited site on the internet. With the millions and millions of websites on the internet, such a ranking is classified as pretty good! Just so you know, Googles rank is #1, Facebook is ranked #2 and YouTube is ranked #3. The Top 100 Personal Development Blogs are ranked by Alexa scores (asof January 2015).

Secondly, I have included Google Page Rank.Google Page Rankis one of the tools Google uses to determine a sites relative importance. This is done primarily by how many quality backlinks the website has. Generally, a score of 3 or higher represents the site is of relative importance. The Top 100 Personal Development Blogs are not ranked by Google Page Rank, however I haveincluded thePageRank of each blog for you to utilise if you wish (you can filter by this).

People often question the validity of such tools, however, when comparing more generally the relative size of a website they are quite accurate and very useful indicators. Other tools might indicate that a lower-ranked blog in our Top 100 is infact larger than a higher-ranked blog, but generally speaking, the Top 10 websites will always be larger than those ranked 10-20, and those ranked 10-20 will always be larger than those ranked 20-30 etc. To sum it up, the larger and more trafficked sites will always tend to be ranked higher regardless of the tool being used.

Do you want to get really funky with the Top 100 blogs? Im pleased to let you know that the Top 100table is dynamic. This means that you can search for your favourite blog to see where it is ranked and sort by any column, such as page rank or alphabetical order. This is your list. Have fun with it!

Theres one small change to how the blogs are ranked for this year. There were a few blogs last year that somehow snuck into the Top 100 without having any PageRank. Therefore, for this year, Ive only included those blogs that have a PageRank of atleast 1.

Without further ado, let me introduce you to the Best Personal Development Blogs for 2015!

CONGRATULATIONS to every blogger that has made this Top 100 list! I personally give you a high-five and want to thank you for your contribution to this world.

If your blog is one of the Top 100, you have the honourof displaying the following badge on your site. This is the most comprehensive list of personal development blogs currently on the internet and Im honoured to have you as part of this! Simply use the code provided below to add it to your site.

Graduate’s Testimony – BIU HUMAN NETWORK

Posted: at 8:46 pm

It is not the degree that makes a great person;

it is the person that makes the degree great.

A person's reputation depends much on his or her professional career and achievements. It also depends on a good education the individual has acquired, firmly established with a university diploma. Most companies employment criteria is driven by the candidate's know-how, ability to solve problems, and other practical skills, and not just the university degree. Bircham International University students and graduates have gotten jobs or promotions in leading companies worldwide. Many felt a considerable increase in their self-esteem and social status. Most of them had moved on to a better job, had been promoted, or had received a salary raise.

There are many success stories among Bircham International University graduates, but we do not know all of them. With all the respect for the privacy of your life, we would like to read your testimony here. Your story may be helpful for other people. It may motivate current students to continue working in their programs of study, it may encourage BIU graduates to aim high in their personal lifes and professional affairs, it may help the decision of those candidates who are now considering Bircham International Universitya suitable option for their future education.

Probably you would have loved to read some of these stories.

I still remember when i was collecting some of my colleagues to join this university with me and how hard it was to convince them to do their masters through distance learning. I confess that many of them have already had their master degrees before me from Bircham University. Thanks to the staff of Bircham University MEA, specially Graziella who was the bridge between me and the university, and who was coordinating the program tirelessly. In fact text books were being sent on time, evaluation reports on time, and any other needed information was timely circulated. After that, as you stated I am satisfied that I made great development and career building, and benefited from the courses I have been given through your distance learning programs with your continuous whisper in my ear day and night. Religion Facts Buddhism

Posted: at 2:51 am

Buddhism began in India 2,500 years ago and, although virtually extinct in India, it remains the dominant world religion in the East. There are over 360 million followers of Buddhism worldwide and over one million American Buddhists. There even a significant number of "Jewish Buddhists." Buddhist concepts have also been influential on western society in general, primarily in the areas of meditation and nonviolence.

Buddhist beliefs and practices are based on the teachings of the Buddha ("Enlightened One"), an Indian prince named Siddharta Gautama who lived around 500 BCE. According to Buddhist tradition, the young prince lived an affluent and sheltered life until a journey during which he saw an old man, a sick man, a poor man, and a corpse. Shocked and distressed at the suffering in the world, Gautama left his family to seek enlightenment through asceticism. But even the most extreme asceticism failed to bring enlightenment. Finally, Gautama sat beneath a tree and vowed not to move until he had attained enlightenment. Days later, he arose as the Buddha - the "enlightened one." He spent the remaining 45 years of his life teaching the path to liberation from suffering (the dharma) and establishing a community of monks (the sangha).

Over its long history, Buddhism has grown into a variety of forms ranging from an emphasis on religious rituals and the worship of deities, to a complete rejection of both rituals and deities in favor of pure meditation. Yet all forms of Buddhism share respect for the teachings of the Buddha and the goal of ending suffering and the cycle of rebirth. Theravada Buddhism, prominent in Southeast Asia, is atheistic and philosophical in nature and focuses on the monastic life and meditation as means to liberation.

Mahayana Buddhism, prominent in China and Japan, incorporates several deities, celestial beings, and other traditional religious elements. In Mahayana, the path to liberation may include religious ritual, devotion, meditation, or a combination of these elements. Zen, Nichiren, Tendai, and Pure Land are the major forms of Mahayana Buddhism.

Zen Buddhism,Outline of Zen Buddhism,Introduction to Zen …

Introduction Zen is a subchool of Mahayana or the Greater Vehicle of Buddhism. Zen is a Japanese term, a short for Zen-na. It is a transliteration of the Chinese term, Chan or Chan-na which in turn is a transliteration of Sanskrit, dhyana. The primary focus of Zen Buddhism is on spiritual practice through daily activities. Philosophical explanations are given lesser importance. Today, Zen Buddhism is practised in a number of countries.

The Mythology of Zen Buddhism It is believed that the origin of Zen Buddhism lies in the Flower Sermon delivered by the Buddha. The Flower Sermon did not involve any verbal communication between the Buddha and His disciples. Rather, what Buddha did was very simple, He upheld a flower before His disciples and quietly waited for a response from them. None responded, except one. This was Mahakashyapa and his response was simple, just a smile. The seemingly simple action and reaction from the Buddha and Mahakashyapa is considered to have a deeper meaning. It is believed that through this, the Buddha passed on a special insight to Mahakashyapa.

History of Zen Buddhism The roots of Zen lie in India, the land of origin of Buddhism. From India, Buddhism spread to other parts of the world. Missionaries from India also visited China to spread the religion. Bodhidharma, a monk from south India visited China in the 6th century CE and is regarded as the founder of the Chan or the Zen Buddhism in the country. He, it is believed, came to China to preach "special transmission outside scriptures" which "did not rely upon words". Huike, a disciple of Bodhidharma, became his successor and the first Chinese patriarch of Zen in China. Huike was followed by Sengcan, Dao Xin, Hongren and Huineng. (The last of these patriarchs is regarded as the ancestor by the surviving schools of Zen Buddhism today).

The ensuing period saw Zen emerging as the largest sect in Chinese Buddhism. A number of school sprung up, each with their own set of beliefs, however, the basic focus still remained the same meditational practice, personal instruction and personal experience. Zen Buddhism developed further during the Tang and the Song period. A number of renowned teachers like Mazu, Shitou, Baizhang, Huangbo, Linzi and Yunmen contributed immensely to develop specialised teaching methods which later became the feature of Five houses of mature Chinese Zen Buddhism. The Five Houses of advanced Zen Buddhism included Cadong, Linji,Guiyaing, Fayan and Yunmen. The last three schools, slowly, merged into the Linzi School. This happened during the rule of Song dynasty (960-1279) and the same period also saw development of Zen teaching methods shape up into a technique that was singular to Zen Buddhism, Koan practice.

Zen developed in China in post Song period as well and a number of texts came up. Later, it got merged with Pure Land Buddhism. Still later, Zen saw periods of decline and revival. The first revival took place during the rule of Ming dynasty while another revival was staged during the 20th century by Hsu Yun, a prominent figure in Chinese Buddhism. Yet another revival took place more recently after the severe repression of Peoples republic of China.

Zen in Other Countries Zen did not remain confined to China, infact very early in its history it crossed borders and reached Vietnam. Later, it also made its presence felt in Korea, Japan and western countries. Below is given a listing of different schools of Zen in these countries and regions other than China.

Japan : Soto, Rinzai and Obaku. Rinzai School is further categorised into Myoshin-ji, Nanzen-ji, Tenry?-ji, Daitoku-ji, and Tofuku-ji. These schools are based on their association with temples.

Vietnam : Vinitaruci School is considered the oldest Zen Buddhist School. Other early Zen Buddhist Schools in Vietnam include Vo Ngon Thong and Thao Duong. More recent Schools in Vietnamese Buddhism are Truc Lam and Lam Te, Lieu Quan.

Korea : Seon is the earliest sect in Korean Zen. Jogye order is its subsect and one of the most dominant form of Zen in Korea.

West : Big Mind, Mountains and Rivers Order, the Zen Peacemaker Order, the Ordinary Mind school, Katagiri lineage.

Zen Beliefs & Practices Zen Buddhism is an offshoot of Mahayana Buddhism and like all the Buddhist schools, it lays stress on the very basic teachings of the Buddha the Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path, the Five Precepts, the Three Dharma Seals and the Five Skandhas. Zen Buddhism also draws from specific teachings of Mahayana Buddhism, most prominently the Mahayana concept of paramitas and bodhisattva ideal of universe salvation. Buddhist deities important in Mahayana tradition are also held in high reverence in the Zen traditions. These deities include Shakyamuni Buddha, Kuan Yin, Maju?ri, Samantabhadra, and Amitabha Buddha

The literary basis of Zen Buddhism are the Mahayana Sutras composed in India and China. These Mahayana Sutras include the Heart Sutra; the Diamond Sutra; the Lankavatara Sutra, the Samantamukha Parivarta, a chapter of the Lotus Sutra; and the Platform Sutra of Huineng.

The focus of Zen lays on daily life practice together with concentrated period of meditation. Also, practicing with others is of paramount importance in Zen. The emphasis on Zen Buddhism is on direct experience rather than on study of books.

Zazen : The most important Zen practice is Zazen (in Japanese) or sitting meditation. In it, practitioners sit in a posture that are called, the lotus, half lotus, seiza and Burmese. Focus is given on ones posture and breathing. The amount of time spent in the practice of Zazen varies, it is more for the monks and less for the householders. It offers an occasion for both discipline and insight.

Koan Practice: Literally, this term means public case and is used as an aid in the advancement of realisation in Zen training. It is usually a story or a phrase from the teaching that comprise a riddle. This riddle is what master seeks a solution to from the student. The solution of these riddle depends not on logic but on insight. In a private meeting known as doksun, the students reveals his level of progress in the resolution of the problem to the teacher. The teacher, on his part, encourages the student to make intuitive leap into a genuine understanding of reality.

Other Techniques : A number of other techniques are characteristics of Zen Buddhism. Some of these are meant to shock the student to eventually assist him to abandon the habitual activities of mind. Not all of these are in practise today, quiet a few exist only in stories. One of these which still exist today is katsu. It is a loud belly shout that helps disciples break through rational thought pattern and thereby achieve enlightenment.
