St. Louis marathon winners Steven Stallis, Sadie Smith motivated by … – St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Posted: at 12:10 am

One month before winning the St. Louis Marathon, Steven Stallis was in Japan running the Tokyo Marathon as part of his goal to finish all six of the worlds major events.

It was just weeks earlier that St. Louis womens champion Sadie Smith ran in a marathon in North Carolina as part of her incessant pursuit of new goals in all 50 states.

The two local runners have different approaches to an often lonely sport but have achieved significant levels of success beyond their first wins in last weekends Go! St. Louis race.

Smith will continue to run marathons at least once a month. Smith won the St. Louis Marathon womens race in 2 hours, 58 minutes, 29 seconds.

Stallis, who won the St. Louis Marathon in 2:32:35, could be done with competition for the year.

But they remain driven by the big picture of their running pursuits.

People are also reading

Sadie Smith crosses the finish line Sunday to complete her first Go! St. Louis Marathon win.

The blueprint for Smith started with the goal of doing a marathon in every state and then continued to expand.

I think there are two camps, she said. There are runners who train hard for one or two races a year and some who run a marathon every month. Its a lot more motivating for me to have a race every month to look forward to. Its what keeps me going. You keep finding new goals.

After completing the 50 states, she sought to break four hours in every state. Then came running the Boston Marathon womens qualifying time (3:40) in every state, breaking 3 hours, hitting the mens Boston qualifying time (3:10), and finally breaking three hours.

She has endured the massive volume to run 92 marathons in nine years.

Stallis ran his first marathon in 2017 and quickly adopted a plan to run in the six majors, which include Boston, New York, Chicago, Berlin, Tokyo and London. The latter remains his last pursuit.

This became the big focus. Jumping in, the first couple I didnt run fast or well, he said. Then I ran well in New York and was 92nd, and I thought This is cool to be top 100 in a world major. So I thought, can I do it in Boston and Tokyo? Instead of just running them, it became how well I could do.

Stallis ran a personal record of 2:24:48 in Tokyo. He now awaits the dumb luck of a lottery to get into the field for London.

The experiences described by both runners about the St. Louis race were remarkably similar for two people who didnt run together and dont know each other.

The course was more difficult than might be imagined. Running with the lead was a challenge without knowing what was happening behind you. Other than the lack of scenic terrain, there was a complete absence of fans along most of the course.

And as leads dwindled for Smith and Stallis, both found that they were not finishing at their best.

I kind of fell apart pretty bad, Smith said.

I was falling apart a little bit, Stallis said in a separate conversation. Being in your own head for 20 miles is grueling.

Smith said she fully expected to be passed, ultimately seeing a 3 -minute lead shrink to less than a minute at the end. Stallis led for 20 miles and was equally uncertain, seeing a 2 -minute lead dwindle to 40 seconds.

Now, he must wait. He qualified for the first five majors he ran, but London fills the field with a lottery. Hes entered the lottery every year since 2018 and is contemplating other goals while he waits.

He would like to break the 2:20 mark. He talks with restraint about the Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:18.

Ive dropped 15 minutes, so Im close to 2:20, he said. The Trials qualifier would be crazy. I dont know if realistically I can do that, but its something to think about. Six minutes is a chunk of time (to improve). Its a huge stretch.

At 31, Stallis doesnt believe he has peaked. Smith, 44, is of the same belief.

She has raised the bar for herself with each accomplishment reached. She achieved her goal of breaking 3 hours in every state last year.

There are states she will need to repeat to break three hours in all 50, a feat she has realized in 18 states so far. She has been able to get under that time by adding strength training and working with a personal coach.

When I just do my thing, Im pretty consistent, she said. I was a really consistent 3 -hour marathoner and made changes two years ago and became consistent around 2:58. I can come within five minutes of that on any course.

Neither runner has moved into the world of ultra running yet, although Smith said she will run her first 50K at the end of April. Stallis said longer distances could be in his future, but for now, hell stick to his maintenance training, doing around 90 miles per week.

Im on a good trajectory, he said. I keep getting faster, so Ill train and see where it takes me.

A nightly look at the day's top sports stories, and a first look at the topics St. Louis fans will be talking about tomorrow.

The motivation behind renaming Public Schools Stadium in Duluth – WDIO

Posted: at 12:10 am

Walt Hunting and Marv Heikkinen were legendary coaches and teachers at Denfeld High School.

Thats why their names are on the proposal to rename Public Schools Stadium to Walt Hunting Stadium Marv Heikkinen Field.

Hunting was a WWI veteran, who coached from 1927-1955.

Joe Vukelich, Denfeld alum, historian, and member of the Re-Naming Committee, explained, One day, in 1935, they came running out. And somebody yelled, here comes Huntings hunters. And thats how the Hunters came to be.

Hunting died in 1957.

Heikkinen, who is 85, is tied with Hunting as the All-Time Winning Coach. He was also an innovative teacher.

He created two curriculums that are still taught here, and hes been retired for 30 years, explained Vukelich.

More importantly, historians said, they were and are wonderful and humble role models who cared about their players and the students.

But the renaming is just the start, with plans to honor other athletes and people whove made an impact at Denfeld.

Stadiums are a meaningful thing for a lot of people. We understand that. We know people are going to want to have a voice, shared Tim Doyle, another Denfeld alum and member of the Re-Naming Committee.

Doyle said theyve worked with the district and current Denfeld students on this project. Plus theyve reached out to Morgan Park and Central alumni as well.

Four schools used to play at PSS: Denfeld, East, Central, and Morgan Park. But now, with Central and Morgan Park closed, and East having its own field, its Denfelds main home now.

If you want to reach out about people youd like to see honored, please email:

heritageofpss@gmail.com

You can submit name ideas to the school district through April 10th. After that, the Business Services department will review all name change submissions and make a decision on which name to move forward. Then they would create a naming rights agreement that would be sent to the School Board as a recommendation for approval. Its expected to be in front of the school board in May.

The Masters: Scottie Scheffler not motivated by legacy ahead of title defence at Augusta National – Sky Sports

Posted: at 12:09 am

By Ali Stafford at Augusta National

6:43, UK, Wednesday 05 April 2023

Scottie Scheffler insists he is not treating The Masters any differently to any other title defence, despite his chance to make major history at Augusta National.

Scheffler secured a maiden major title with an impressive three-shot victory in last year's contest, which was part of a dominant streak of four wins in a six-tournament stretch to start 2022.

The American successfully defended his title at the WM Phoenix Open in February and stormed to a five-shot win at The Players last month, with Scheffler now having the chance to claim a seventh victory in 14 months.

Jack Nicklaus, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods are the only players to have previously successfully defended their title at The Masters, with Scheffler adamant that having fun is more of a motivation than creating a legacy.

"Just because it's The Masters and it is what it is, and it's such a special tournament that I think we build it up so much in our heads," Scheffler said in his pre-tournament press conference.

The Masters - Live

"As far as my preparation goes, I've kept things pretty similar to what they were last year, outside of getting here a few hours earlier on Sunday so I could play more golf.

"When the tournament starts on Thursday, everybody starts even par. Just because you're defending doesn't mean I get to start at one under. I'll be approaching it just like I do a lot of other tournaments.

"Legacy at the end of this is not really why I play. With that being said, any time you can get mentioned in the same breath as a Tiger and a Jack and a Nick Faldo is really special, but it's not a motivating factor for me to come out here and play.

"It's so special and cool when it happens, but it doesn't motivate me out here. I'm just trying to come out here and do my best and play good golf and have fun. Legacy is a complicated thing. In 100 years I'm going to be forgotten and it's not a big deal."

The Masters - Live

Scheffler heads into the opening major of the year as world No 1 ahead of Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, who could both leapfrog the American at the top of the standings with a victory this week.

Rahm is already a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this year and McIlroy - chasing the career Grand Slam this week - started 2023 with Hero Dubai Desert Classic victory, with golf's leading trio having six titles between them during the past three months.

"We are definitely not making each other worse, that's for sure," Scheffler added. "I think you've seen just a pretty high level of consistency from us so far this year. I think if you look at a lot of the leaderboards, we've been pretty close to winning most of the elevated events.

"A lot of that is just good, healthy competition and hopefully we'll continue to elevate ourselves through that competition and then the guys behind us will be nothing but motivated to get to where we are."

When asked about their consistency, McIlroy said: "It just seems like one of us three is popping up every week we play with a chance to win. That's the level that we all want to be at.

"I think that for me, anyway, seeing those two guys consistently performing at that level just pushes me to want to be better."

Watch The Masters throughout the week live on Sky Sports! Live coverage of the opening round begins on Thursday from 2pm on Sky Sports Golf.

Warren Buffet’s Quotes on Success, Motivation, Life, and Money – New Trader U

Posted: at 12:09 am

The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett, is one of the most successful investors and CEOs of all time; he is a treasure trove of wisdom regarding achieving success, staying motivated, and managing money wisely. In this blog post, well examine some of his most famous quotes and explore how you can apply his principles to your life.

Buffetts message here is clear: focus on the few things that matter and avoid making too many mistakes. To be successful, its crucial to prioritize the things that will have the most significant impact on your life and not get bogged down in the minutiae. Doing so will make you more efficient and effective in your pursuit of success. All you need to do to succeed is have a few big wins while not doing any big stupid things that ruin you.

Saying no to almost everything besides your primary goals can help you stay focused and out of trouble. This quote highlights the importance of focus and prioritization. Successful people understand that saying yes to everything dilutes their efforts and distracts them from their primary goals. By saying no to almost everything, they can concentrate their energy and resources on the few things that matter, ultimately leading to success.

The company you keep can have a profound impact on your life. Buffett emphasizes the importance of surrounding yourself with people who inspire and help you grow. Youll learn from their experiences, adopt their positive traits, and improve yourself by doing this. Be careful who you spend time with and how you allow it to affect your beliefs, attitude, and behavior.

Habits are crucial to success, shaping our behavior and determining our daily routines. Buffett warns us about the power of good and bad habits and how they can be difficult to change once theyre firmly entrenched. The key is to be conscious of your habits and build positive ones while working to break any that may be holding you back.

In this humorous quote, Buffett highlights the importance of patience and understanding that some things take time to come to fruition. In pursuing success, remaining patient and persistent is crucial, even when you dont see immediate results.

Passion is a powerful driving force behind success. Buffett believes those who pursue their passions are more likely to be successful because they are intrinsically motivated to work hard and strive for excellence. Find what you love to do, and let that be your guiding force in your pursuit of success. Following your passion and work energy is an edge.

Reputation is an invaluable asset. Buffett reminds us that building a good reputation takes time and effort, while a momentary lapse in judgment can destroy it. Always be mindful of your actions and decisions, and consider their impact on your reputation. Your reputation, name, and brand are your most valuable assets; guard them wisely and never risk losing them.

Preserving your capital is one of the essential principles in investing. According to Buffett, the first rule of investing is to avoid losing money, and the second rule is never to forget the first rule. By focusing on preserving your capital, youll be in a better position to grow your wealth over time. The key to success in investing is to start with risk management.

Buffett emphasizes the importance of understanding the difference between price and value when investing. A high price doesnt always mean high value, and a low price doesnt necessarily mean low value. By focusing on the underlying value of an investment rather than its price, youll be more likely to make sound investment decisions. This is the core of his investing strategy, getting value for his capital in discounted future cash flows of the underlying business he buys.

This quote highlights the importance of having a long-term perspective when investing. The stock market can be volatile in the short term, but those who are patient and able to ride out the ups and downs are more likely to reap the rewards. By adopting a long-term perspective and remaining patient, you can increase your chances of success in investing. Buffett believes impatience is an expensive habit to have in the stock market.

Buffett often speaks about the power of compound interest, reinvesting dividends, and compounding capital gains; this quote beautifully illustrates the idea. The benefits of compound interest can take time to manifest, but by consistently investing and allowing your wealth to grow over time, youll eventually enjoy the fruits of your labor. Like planting a tree, investing in your financial future requires patience and foresight, but the rewards can be significant.

Warren Buffetts quotes offer valuable insights into achieving success, staying motivated, navigating life, and managing and investing money wisely. By applying his principles and wisdom to your own life, youll be well on your way to reaching your goals and building a prosperous future.

Riyadh’s Motivations Behind the Saudi-Iran Deal – Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

Posted: at 12:09 am

On March 10, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and China issued a joint statement announcing an agreement to resume diplomatic relations between Riyadh and Tehran. After seven years of military and diplomatic hostility, the two Gulf powers agreed to work toward resolving their disagreements based on a set of international rules and two bilateral agreements signed in 1998 and 2001. This years agreement came after five days of comprehensive and intense negotiations in Beijingand two years of Saudi-Iranian closed-door talks in Iraq and Oman.

Much of the analysis has focused on Chinas growing role in the Middle East amid global power competition. But Saudi motivations go beyond hedging against U.S. withdrawal from the region or balancing one great power against another.

Both the substance and process of this agreement is a case study of China and Saudi Arabias shared understanding of a rules-based international order and of international security. This is an agreement on the principles of conflict resolution between two states rather than an agreement on the solutions to be reached. It reiterates recurrent Saudi and Chinese attachment to norms such as nonintervention in the domestic affairs of nations that have been constant pillars of the Sino-Saudi partnership since 2006, shown in their joint statements, actions within the UN system, and in Chinas Global Security Initiative.

Chinas mediation also helped navigate a long-standing dispute between Saudi Arabia and Iran over the conflict in Yemen. Riyadhs initial position included preconditions for any talks with Iran on Tehran leaving Yemen to Yemenis, as the kingdom viewed Irans support for the Houthis as a main obstacle to any de-escalation. But over the past two years, the Saudi position has evolved, and China helped broker a compromise by which Riyadh agreed to Tehrans request to announce the restoration of diplomatic relations before Iran halted support to the Houthis.

The public trilateral statement lacks any Iranian gesture on Yemen, but its language and consecutive press reports confirm that Chinese mediation finally got the parties to an agreement, which provides them with a two-month grace period to show goodwill before the restoration of diplomatic relations enters into effect. Saudi Arabia cant guarantee an Iranian constructive role, but it is counting on some Chinese understanding, albeit imperfect, of its position in Yemen. Saudi Arabia is also betting on Chinas vested interest in the success of Beijings first exercise of diplomatic leadership in the region.

In addition, Saudi statements frame Irans engagements per this agreement as promises made to China. An unnamed Saudi official listed Chinas role as one of the most difficult issues to resolve during the negotiations. Unlike the previous mediators (most recently Oman and Iraq), China has the leverage to guarantee Irans respect for its engagements within this trilateral process, at least from a Saudi point of view. Beijing has already pleased Riyadh by conveying high-level Iranian security officials and not just Iranian diplomats, whom Saudi Arabia perceives as less in control of Irans behavior in the region. Riyadh has traditionally lacked the coercive diplomatic tools and the military deterrence to pressure security and military agents inside Iran, especially the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, into compromise. Chinese mediation may compensate for this weakness, but it also puts Beijing under the spotlight if Tehran violates the engagements it made in and to Beijing.

Last, failed experiences are a pillar of the Saudi approach to any dialogue with Iranincluding reliance on Western and regional powers to try to pressure Iran into a compromise. China is playing the sponsor role for the first time and has the benefit of Riyadhs doubt. It is the first global power to use its leverage with Iran to address specific Saudi requests regarding Tehrans regional policy without publicly framing them as Chinese security initiatives or a nuclear deal.

There are two downsides to Beijings choice to highlight the regional ownership of this agreement. First, China presented itself as a reliable friend of the two countries, keeping itself at an equal distance from both. This is a position that Saudi Arabia doesnt necessarily favor, even if it benefits from Chinas leverage over Iran. Second, China is also signaling its distance from the final outcome, despite reiterating the promise that it will continue its constructive role. Chinese priorities in the Middle East remain largely economic, with security being a function of them.

Saudi Arabias de-escalation with Iran is part of a larger foreign policy focus on supporting its socioeconomic development plan, known as Vision 2030. The kingdom is investing billions of dollars to implement the plan, and an escalation with Iran would threaten the projects funding, deter much needed foreign investment, and dash Saudi dreams of becoming a regional and global hub especially for cloud computing, logistics, trade, and industry.

Chinas mediation came at a time when the regional diplomatic and economic balance of power tilts toward Saudi Arabia. High oil prices are allowing the kingdom to advance its economic development plans and double down on its financial, Saudi first diplomacy to regain regional and international influence. Saudi leadership has worked to solidify the countrys international standing since 2018 by revamping its process for foreign policy making, ending diplomatic confrontations, and improving the international narrative on the Saudi role in the Yemen war. The United States is moving to reduce the gap in Saudi Arabias defense against Iran and its militias. Israel has become a de facto security partner within U.S. Central Command, and its eagerness for normalization with Saudi Arabia poses a threat to Iran. Importantly, reports on Saudi coverage of Iranian domestic unrest and its apparent private investment in Iranian opposition media provided the kingdom with a powerful bargaining card.

On the other side of the Gulf, Iran is under pressure from both domestic protests and crippling international economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation. These factors increase Irans need for economic support, not only from China but also from its rich neighbors, led by Saudi Arabia. Although this might look like an ideal situation for Riyadh, it is not: Iran has a track record of lashing out at its neighbors when regime stability is at stake. Examples include the 1996 Khubar tower attacks and the 2019 attacks on oil infrastructure in Abqaiq and Khurais, leading to reports of an imminent Iranian attack following threats to Saudi Arabia amid Iranian protests last November. Tehran is also closer to achieving weapons-grade enriched uranium, which would likely increase Irans deterrence to a new level and unleash more hostile actions against its Gulf neighbor. China might economically and diplomatically sponsor a de-escalation between Iran and Saudi Arabia, but it doesn't necessarily mean that Beijing will intervene if Tehran decided to breach it.

This agreement highlights the difference between Saudi Arabias relationship with China and its partnership with Russia. When it comes to foreign policy, the most central agreement between Russia and Saudi Arabia is the OPEC+ agreement. In fact, Russias agreement to sell Iran advanced military equipment and cyber warfare capabilities in return for Irans drones, which it has used in Ukraine, is a direct threat to Saudi Arabias security. The March 10 agreement gives Saudi Arabia a stake in drawing China away from a potential Russia-Iran-China axis that may embolden Irans offensive actions in the region, further empower it to escape U.S. and international sanctions on its economy, and increase Russian and Iranian encroachment on Saudi Arabias oil market share in China. Global power competition between the United States and China, Western shunning of Russia and Iran because of the war in Ukraine, and the clinical death of the Iran nuclear deal are already drawing the three countries closer. The agreement should be seen as a Saudi attempt to shield itself from getting caught in the middle of Western escalation with Iran, Russia, and China.

Finally, the fundamental Saudi position is that Iran has no role in the Arab world. This will remain a vector for Riyadhs enhanced cooperation with the United States and Western powers to move from defense to deterrence against Iran. For the time being, Saudi Arabia is choosing to deal with Iran with a detached pragmatism; essentially, We cannot get rid of them, and they cant get rid of us. Based on this logic, Saudi Arabia is relying on regulated coexistence in the Gulf and a mix of competition and containment in Syria and Iraq.

Turning the page on conflict with Iran will not be easy, even if the two countries respect the rules that they agreed on in Beijing. Riyadh will need to manage the complex link between Irans expectations for economic dividends from de-escalation with Saudi Arabia and the escalation of U.S.-led sanctions on economic cooperation with Iran. It will also need to mitigate potential spillover from Israels shadow war with Iran, Irans competing relationship with the United Arab Emirates, and adverse actions from Irans revolutionary guard and Iranian-backed militias across the region. For the time being, it seems that both governments in Riyadh and Teheran are determined to move closer.
