Two months after her release from prison, Hearst married Bernard Lee Shaw.

Born Bernard Lee Shaw on September 3, 1945, he graduated from the University of San Francisco. Afterwards, he served in the Army.

In 1983, Shaw started working for the Hearst Corporation. Shaw was a former San Francisco police officer and bodyguard of Patty Hearst.

At the time of his death, Shaw was Hearsts vice president for corporate security.

Bernard Shaw met Patty Hearst in 1976 after she was released from jail, with bail pending. A year later, he was granted a divorce from his first wife.

Shaw was one of 20 bodyguards hired by Hearsts family. When her appeal was turned down by the United States Supreme Court, she was sent back to prison.

However, Shaw continued to visit her in prison four times a week. The couple got engaged on February 14, 1978.

The following year, President Jimmy Carter reduced Hearsts sentence. The couple tied the knot in a brief but well-publicized Episcopal ceremony at a naval base in San Francisco Bay.

Talking about her familys view on their marriage, Hearst said, My parents gave us a Sears vacuum cleaner as a wedding present. They thought it wouldnt last.

The couple went on to have two daughters named Gillian Hearst Simonds and Lydia Hearst-Shaw.

Bernard Shaw also has two kids from his first marriageThomas Shaw and Heather Shaw.

Shaw passed away on December 17, 2013, at the age of 68 in Garrison, New York, surrounded by family. The cause of his death was reportedly a long battle with cancer.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), also known as key success indicators, fundamentally help businesses and staff meet goals.

KPIs are not complicated to understand. At their core is the notion that every organization has a set of metrics it can utilize in order to judge the performance of either a part or the whole of the operation. Peter Druckers understated, yet critical, observation makes the point abundantly clear: What gets measured gets improved.

The measure may be something as simple as you, or your business unit, achieving a set goal or target. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, it could be achieving a set of business objectives over a period of time. This might be through something tangible such as meeting productivity targets, or in meeting a metric, such as reaching a certain stock market valuation.

What all of these have in common is effective measurement of goals and objectives, be it how well customer service is delivered, wider business performance metrics or longer-term strategic organizational goals. Deciding which KPIs are right relies on clearly defining critical success factors first, and only then pinpointing KPIs that actually matter.

Employee KPIs often feed into wider operational KPIs, so that staff are working towards a goal which will ultimately help the business meet its wider objectives. Lets look at five of these, specific to personal performance:

Lets be blunt unhappy customers do not make for good long-term prospects for any business. Customer support and satisfaction matter whether a company serves the general public or a paying customer. In a sea of KPIs, this is one which almost every company will want to be using. By tracking customer satisfaction, employees and companies can quickly understand where there may be problems within the organization. For example, follow-up questionnaires that measure how customers feel they and their query were handled by a customer service representative or how effectively they feel a salesperson handled their inquiry are good ways of measuring the personal performance side of customer satisfaction.

If customer satisfaction comes as close as any KPI can to an imperative measure, employee satisfaction is a close second. Just as happy customers are integral to the longevity of a business, poor staff morale or engagement could spell disaster. Its why KPIs need to be able to illuminate external as well as internal indicators affecting business. With employees, those internal KPIs can range from quantitative measures such as productivity to qualitative factors such as motivation or satisfaction.

There are a number of teamwork metrics which can form the basis of trackable indicators of performance over time. These may focus on attendance, helpfulness, efficiency, initiative or quality. How your food is grown or raised can have a major impact on your mental and emotional health as well as the environment. Organic foods often have more beneficial nutrients, such as antioxidants, than their conventionally-grown counterparts and people with allergies to foods, chemicals, or preservatives often find their symptoms lessen or go away when they eat only organic foods.

Organic produce contains fewer pesticides. Chemicals such as fungicides, herbicides, and insecticides are widely used in conventional agriculture and residues remain on (and in) the food we eat.

Organic food is often fresher because it doesnt contain preservatives that make it last longer. Organic produce is often (but not always, so watch where it is from) produced on smaller farms near where it is sold.

Organic meat and milk are richer in certain nutrients. Results of a 2016 European study show that levels of certain nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, were up to 50 percent higher in organic meat and milk than in conventionally raised versions.

Organic food is GMO-free. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) or genetically engineered (GE) foods are plants whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding, most commonly in order to be resistant to pesticides or produce an insecticide.

Unlike organic standards, there is no specific definition for local food. It could be grown in your local community, your state, your region, or your country. During large portions of the year it is usually possible to find food grown close to home at places such as a farmers market.

Financial: Money stays within the local economy. More money goes directly to the farmer, instead of to things like marketing and distribution.

Transportation: In the U.S., for example, the average distance a meal travels from the farm to the dinner plate is over 1,500 miles. Produce must be picked while still unripe and then gassed to ripen it after transport. Or the food is highly processed in factories using preservatives, irradiation, and other means to keep it stable for transport.

Freshness: Local food is harvested when ripe and thus fresher and full of flavor.

The ongoing debate about the effects of GMOs on health and the environment is a controversial one. In most cases, GMOs are engineered to make food crops resistant to herbicides and/or to produce an insecticide. For example, much of the sweet corn consumed in the U.S. is genetically engineered to be resistant to the herbicide Roundup and to produce its own insecticide, Bt Toxin.

GMOs are also commonly found in U.S. crops such as soybeans, alfalfa, squash, zucchini, papaya, and canola, and are present in many breakfast cereals and much of the processed food that we eat. If the ingredients on a package include corn syrup or soy lecithin, chances are it contains GMOs.

The use of toxic herbicides like Roundup (glyphosate) has increased 15 times since GMOs were introduced. While the World Health Organization announced that glyphosate is probably carcinogenic to humans, there is still some controversy over the level of health risks posed by the use of pesticides.

While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the biotech companies that engineer GMOs insist they are safe, many food safety advocates point out that no long term studies have ever been conducted to confirm the safety of GMO use, while some animal studies have indicated that consuming GMOs may cause internal organ damage, slowed brain growth, and thickening of the digestive tract.

GMOs have been linked to increased food allergens and gastro-intestinal problems in humans. While many people think that altering the DNA of a plant or animal can increase the risk of cancer, the research has so far proven inconclusive.

As mentioned above, one of the primary benefits of eating organic is lower levels of pesticides. However, despite popular belief, organic farms do use pesticides. The difference is that they only use naturally-derived pesticides, rather than the synthetic pesticides used on conventional commercial farms. Natural pesticides are believed to be less toxic, however, some have been found to have health risks. That said, your exposure to harmful pesticides will be lower when eating organic.

Most of us have an accumulated build-up of pesticide exposure in our bodies due to numerous years of exposure. This chemical body burden as it is medically known could lead to health issues such as headaches, birth defects, and added strain on weakened immune systems.

Some studies have indicated that the use of pesticides even at low doses can increase the risk of certain cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Children and fetuses are most vulnerable to pesticide exposure because their immune systems, bodies, and brains are still developing. Exposure at an early age may cause developmental delays, behavioral disorders, autism, immune system harm, and motor dysfunction.

Pregnant women are more vulnerable due to the added stress pesticides put on their already taxed organs. Plus, pesticides can be passed from mother to child in the womb, as well as through breast milk.

The widespread use of pesticides has also led to the emergence of super weeds and super bugs, which can only be killed with extremely toxic poisons like 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (a major ingredient in Agent Orange).

Rinsing reduces but does not eliminate pesticides. Peeling sometimes helps, but valuable nutrients often go down the drain with the skin. The best approach: eat a varied diet, wash and scrub all produce thoroughly, and buy organic when possible.

Organic food is often more expensive than conventionally-grown food. But if you set some priorities, it may be possible to purchase organic food and stay within your food budget.

Some types of conventionally-grown produce are much higher in pesticides than others, and should be avoided. Others are low enough that buying non-organic is relatively safe. The Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization that analyzes the results of government pesticide testing in the U.S., offers an annually-updated list that can help guide your choices.

As of the most recent available data, that number had risen to over 6.7 million, an increase from roughly one quarter to almost one third of all students.

The table below further illustrates the growth of online learning and the steady increase in online course and degree program enrollment over a five-year period, from 2013-2017. While the total number of students enrolled in college and university programs has remained relatively stable at roughly 20.5 million, an analysis of IPEDS data indicates that the number of students enrolled in online courses and in fully online programs grew by more than 1.4 million, from nearly 26 percent to almost 33 percent of all students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

In practical terms, the data suggest that students currently enrolled in a college or university program and those who are considering a bachelors or graduate degree program are likely to have opportunities to take online courses, as well as options for pursuing a degree through a fully or partially online program. At the undergraduate level, for example, an analysis of the IPEDS data reveals that the proportion of undergraduates enrolled exclusively in online courses had reached 12.98 percent by 2017 (up from 10.19 percent in 2013). Over that same period of time, the percentage of students enrolled in at least one online course rose from 12.57 percent to over 27 percent or more than one in four students.

Similarly, professionals with a bachelors or a masters degree who are considering going back to school to add new skills, advance in their current field, and/or switch careers can typically do so from their home or office through online courses and degree programs in many if not most areas of study. As an indication of that trend, the number of graduate students who completed some or all of their courses online grew from just under 30 percent to 37.95 percent from 2013 to 2017. However, colleges and universities offering online degree programs typically must receive formal authorization from a states board of education in order to enroll students who live in that state. In other words, a school must be authorized by the state in order to enroll students from that state.

The National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) is attempting to address problems related to online programs receiving authorization in all 50 states and other US territories. However, some online programs may choose not to accept applicants from certain states for a number of reasons, including the complexities of the state authorization process. Certain types of online degree programs, particularly programs that require field placements, supervised internships, and clinical residencies, may also restrict admissions eligibility to students who reside in some but not all states.

Potential applicants to online programs offered by out-of-state schools should research state authorizations carefully prior to submitting applications. For programs that require on-site, in-person field placements, internships, and/or residencies it is also advisable to contact a program administrator regarding these requirements prior to applying. Finally, because licensure requirements in many professions vary by state, potential applicants to out-of-state online programs in fields that require state licensure should make sure that a programs curriculum provides adequate training for eventual licensure in their state.

There are many online degree programs that do not require students to attend any on-campus sessions. However, some programs incorporate a limited number of campus visits and/or other in-person instructional sessions. There are also hybrid programs that offer some courses online and others on campus or have courses that utilize a mix of online and on-campus instruction. While there are no universal standards for what constitutes an online program versus a hybrid program, programs that require students to take entire courses on campus for one or more terms are generally considered to be hybrid programs. OnlineEducation.com researches program formats and classifies programs accordingly; programs that require student attendance at more than two or three campus sessions per year are not currently listed on the site.

In-person orientations, workshops, labs, networking sessions, and other campus-based activities can enhance the online learning experience. They provide opportunities to meet face-to-face with instructors and classmates and may help students forge a connection with the college or university offering the program. Additionally, hands-on training may be necessary or preferable in some fields. By utilizing a limited number of campus visits or a hybrid format, schools can offer students the convenience and flexibility associated with online instruction, while providing complementary and/or necessary in-person instruction.

However, campus visits, which can last from two or three days to a week to ten days, require travel, which may be inconvenient and/or burdensome for some students. In addition, attending campus-based sessions and short-term residencies can add travel and lodging expenses to the cost of earning an online degree. Potential applicants should factor these additional costs into the overall expense of an online program prior to submitting an application.

Empowerment in Action: How to Empower Your Employees

Are you interested in your own personal empowerment or the empowerment of your employees? Employers and employees both have unrealistic perceptions about what empowerment is and how it's supposed to work in real time.

Empowerment is the process of enabling or authorizing an individual to think, behave, take action, and control work and decision-making about their job in autonomous, independent, self-directed ways. It is the state of feeling self-empowered to take control of your destiny.

Empowerment is feeling in control of your work environment and that you have permission to make decisions in the areas you control and are responsible for in your job.

When thinking about empowerment in human relations terms, try to avoid thinking of it as something that one individual does for another. It is one of the problems organizations have experienced with the concept of empowerment. People think that someone, usually the manager, has to bestow empowerment on the people who report to him or her.

Consequently, the reporting staff members wait for the bestowing of empowerment, and the manager asks why people won't act in empowered ways. This bestowing and waiting has led to a general unhappiness, mostly undeserved, with the concept of empowerment in many organizations. Don't let that happen in your organization. Your best success will result from empowered employees taking actionnot waiting for permission.

Think of empowerment, instead, as the process of an individual enabling himself to take action and control work and decision making in autonomous ways. Empowerment comes from the individual.

The organization has the responsibility to create a work environment which helps foster the ability and desire of employees to act in empowered ways. The work organization has the responsibility to remove barriers that limit the ability of staff to act in empowered ways.

Think, too, of empowerment as an employee philosophy and strategy that organizations benefit from adopting. Empowered employees, who are operating within an organization's strategic framework that includes mission and goals increase the productivity and effectiveness of the workplace.

They are enabled to perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively without feeling as if they are waiting for a decision, waiting for direction, and waiting for permission to act. They become more responsible and accountable when self-direction is the norm.

Employee involvement and participative management are often used to mean empowerment. They are not interchangeable. Each describes a different characteristic of an effective workplace.

These are examples of empowerment in action.

The manager of the Human Resources department added weeks to the process of hiring new employees by requiring his supposedly empowered staff members to obtain his signature on every document related to the hiring of a new employee. Consequently, documents sat on his desk in a pile until he had time to review them.

When the time problem was brought to his attention and the fact that is actions impeded empowered behavior, he fostered empowerment by telling employees they no longer needed his signature unless the hire involved extraordinary circumstances or an executive position.

John empowered himself to discuss the career objectives he wished to pursue with his supervisor. He told his supervisor, frankly, that if the opportunities were not available in his current company, he would move on to another company.

Mary took charge of her career by fueling her sense of empowerment when she developed a career path plan, met with her manager to ask for her assistance to achieve it, and set goals for its accomplishment in her performance development plan.

The company's management style involved sharing the goals, sharing each employee's expectations and framework with the employee, and then, getting out of the way while employees were empowered to set goals, accomplish their objectives, and determine how to do their jobs.

The organization operated in a team-based structure in which each development team had the authority and autonomy to determine the features and capabilities of their product. They did this in conjunction with the overall technology leadership and with serious input from the marketing team.

Empowerment is a desirable management and organizational style that enables employees to practice autonomy, control their own jobs, and use their skills and abilities to benefit both their organization and themselves.

How a Transform a Negative Mental Attitude into a Positive …

It has been estimated that the average person has roughly 60,000 individual thoughts every 24 hours. 95 percent of these thoughts are the same they had the previous day, and 80 percent of these repeated thoughts are of a negative/pessimistic nature. Furthermore, many of these pessimistic thoughts are unconscious and habitual, meaning that people have next to no awareness of the impact that these thoughts have over their lives.

What is even more worrisome is that 95 percent of the thoughts that people have form the foundations of the emotions they experience throughout the day. This is significant because our emotions form the foundations of our attitude, and our attitude is what shapes our happiness and success in all areas of life.

Thoughts are biochemical impulses of energy, intelligence, and information that hold magnetic properties. These magnetic properties originate within each cell and are influenced by your peer groups, worldviews, cultural history, media, religion, mythology and as a result of social expectations. All of these elements of life influence and shape the thoughts you have about yourself, about others and about your life and circumstances. Over time, these thoughts evolve from opinions into beliefs and convictions.

Beliefs and convictions are nothing more than a recipe for thoughts that have been locked into place. When you have a belief about something, there is no doubting or wishing or hoping. Things are the way they are and there is no alternate view. You have locked a certain set of thoughts in place to form this belief, and this belief is part of the puzzle that shapes your attitude throughout the day.

Lets break this down another way: Your thoughts are a result of life. You have the thoughts you have, because of how youve been influenced by life. Life includes what is now, what was in the past, and what you expect to happen in the future. As such, your thoughts and the attitudes you have are a result of your peer groups, worldviews, your cultural history, media influences, religious traditions and beliefs, and other social factors. In other words, you have the thoughts you have because youve experienced life in a certain and specific way. Therefore, you are how you are today because of the influences you have allowed into your life into your mind.

Over a lifetime you have chosen to focus on certain things while ignoring other things. There are so many different beliefs, opinions, and perspectives in this world. However, you have only chosen to focus on a few of them. Some of them have been somewhat forced upon you by your peers, parents, teachers, mentors, culture and religious background. However, other things you have chosen to focus on because of your personal preferences and tastes. You have therefore created your current thought-patterns and perspectives through the choices you have made over a lifetime.

Thoughts dont immediately turn into beliefs and/or attitudes. Its a process that takes time. You will, for instance, have an initial thought about something. This thought stimulates various cells in your brain. The more you use this thought through repetition, the more you use those particular cells, and the stronger the connection between those cells becomes. Likewise, the more emotional intensity that goes into a thought, the more the neural highway in the brain strengthens. As such, the easier it is to have that particular thought the next time around. Eventually, the thought becomes a habit and is projected out into the external world as an attitude; which is nothing more than a collection of thoughts, beliefs, opinions, and values.

A thought is never an isolated event. Your brain always tries to make sense of the world by linking present circumstances to past memories. This connection between the past and present forms associations in the brain that help you make better sense of the world. You might, of course, learn something new and different, however, your brain will still attempt to find some relevance, and will, therefore, find a way to connect the new with the old.

How your brain connects the new experiences to the old memories will determine how you make sense of the world. And how you make sense of the world shapes how you think about your world; which builds the foundations of what you believe about your world manifesting in the attitude you project out into the world.

Thoughts are as complex as they are simple. They are simple because of their nature. Its just easy to have a thought, however, its not easy to understand how that thought came to be, or what the consequences of having that thought will be in the future. As such, your thoughts are very complex structures because they are influenced by many different factors.

Consider for a moment one of your thoughts, and ask yourself:

Why did I have this specific thought?

Why now? Why like this? Why not something different?

How did this thought originate?

Where did this thought come from?

What influenced this thought into my life?

How many different factors influenced it?

How far back into my childhood could the origins of this thought be tied to?

How has this thought been influenced by other aspects of my psyche?

Your psyche is made up of many parts that come to form the MasterMind Matrix. As such your thoughts are not only influenced by outside factors but also influenced by the pain and pleasure response, by your beliefs, values, self-concept, meta-programs, psychological rules, mental focus, choices, decisions, actions, physiology, language, etc. Likewise, all of these parts of your behavior and psyche influence your thoughts. In other words, your thoughts are not only influenced by these parts of your psyche, but these parts also influence and shape your thoughts. And TOGETHER everything mentioned here shapes your attitude for better or worse.

Your attitude is in many ways nothing more than a collection of your values, beliefs and the opinions you have about a specific subject. These parts of your psyche are shaped by your thoughts, and your thoughts are shaped by the world you live in, by your past memories, and as a result of the things you have chosen to focus on over a lifetime.

Whatever you give your attention to becomes a priority in your life. Therefore, whatever you decide to focus on has meaning for you, and as a result, these things will shape how you think, what you believe, what you value, and essentially the attitude you will project out into the world.

There are two Universal Laws at play here. The first of these laws is the Law of Concentration, and the second of these laws is the Law of Becoming.

These two Universal Laws are basically saying that your entire life and the attitude you project out into the world is dependent upon what you choose to focus on most of the time. Therefore, if your attitude is poor and you desire to make a change, then you must choose to focus on other things that will help you transform your thoughts; thereby improving your state-of-mind (attitude).

Your attitude is also tied to the references that you have collected over a lifetime.

Every experience you have whether good or bad, painful or pleasurable creates a set of memories. These memories form references that you use to make sense of the world you live in. These references are just experiences that have come about as a result of pain and pleasure in your life. You might, for instance, have experienced a negative situation in the past which brought you painful memories. Or you might have experienced a positive situation in the past which brought you pleasurable memories. These situations/experiences are nothing more but memories today. However, these memories/references have a significant impact on the attitude you project out into the world.

Your brain will naturally connect many painful memories/references together to form an opinion about something. These opinions strengthen over time as more related references are found. And over the long-term, these references come to form your beliefs about this specific situation or area of your life. And consequently, these beliefs form the foundations of the attitude you project out into the world.

Now, its important to note that these memories/references are only opinions. They are only your perspectives and interpretations of the situation. They might have no actual basis in reality. As such, your attitude might be based on false references and distorted memories that you have accepted as the truth. Your negative attitude is therefore based on a lie that you have convinced yourself to believe. And this is influencing how you feel, think and behave in specific situations for better or worse. Whats even worse, is that it influences your expectations of yourself, of others and of the world around you. This, therefore, creates a snowball effect where a negative attitude grows and picks up momentum over time until it destroys your life.

One day after years of living with a negative mental attitude, you might experience some very intense pain that results from the attitude you consistently project out into the world. Its this painful experience that will often provide you with the wake-up call you need to make some changes for the better. But in all honesty, you dont need to wait until this moment arrives. You can start making positive changes today right now!

A Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) is the ability to interpret and reframe your life experiences in a favorable way that is helpful and advantageous in relation to the desired outcomes you would like to achieve. It is the ability to cultivate optimism during difficult times. In other words, its a solution-focused attitude that seeks out answers over complaints.

Cultivating a PMA takes time and practice. Its not something youll immediately get into the habit of doing. Youll need to make some changes, start doing things differently and make some better choices. Its a process that takes some effort, however, it will be effort worth spent as it will help open the door to very different perspectives and a world full of new opportunities.

Lets now take a look at some simple things you can do to help shift how you think about your life and circumstances that will help encourage a PMA.

The words you use to express yourself are emotional triggers that significantly influence your state-of-mind and the attitude you bring forth into every situation. These words either create positive expectations, or they create limiting and negative expectations. It all depends on the words you decide to use.

In order to overcome a negative mental attitude you must transform your language, and transforming your language begins by changing the words you habitually use when in a negative state-of-mind. You can do this in one of two ways:

For instance, you might choose to lower the intensity of the words you use by changing I am feeling angry to I am feeling concerned. Or you might instead choose to put a positive spin on things by changing I am feeling angry to I am kind of curious.

The second choice is the better option, however, this can also be the most difficult option because it forces you to think in a very different way that might significantly go against your habitual tendencies. This can, therefore, create some internal resistance and conflict. If this resistance is very evident in your situation, then you might instead choose the first option, where you lower the intensity of the negative word you are using. This helps you feel somewhat better about the situation but doesnt necessarily conflict with your habitual thinking patterns.

You might initially begin using the first option, where you consciously lower the intensity of the words you are expressing. Then once you begin feeling more comfortable with these words, you can switch to the second option where you replace your limiting words with more empowering words that can be more helpful in your situation. As such, over time you will begin to shift your attitude from a negative to a more positive state-of-mind. However, all this requires conscious effort, and it may be difficult at first, however, with some persistent effort you can successfully make these changes.

When it comes to the language you choose to use, its important that you set positive expectations for yourself. For example, is there any point being angry in this situation? By being angry you are drawing into your attention all the things that make you feel angry, and as a result, you feel even angrier, which ends up creating expectations that there will be more things to feel angry about in the future. Maybe instead of feeling angry, you can feel a little concerned or somewhat curious. Both states-of-mind will dramatically shift how you think about the situation, and this will subsequently create a different set of expectations moving forward. Moreover, your attitude will improve and you will be in a far more advantageous position to make the very best of this situation.

There are a lot of possibilities here. All thats required is that you play around with the words you use. Dont settle on one kind of word. Instead, focus on adding richness and color to your language that will help you shift how you think and interpret the events and circumstances of your life.

The words you use and the thoughts you indulge in influence your physiology. Likewise, your physiology influences the words you choose to use and the thoughts you choose to indulge in. Therefore by making small shifts in your physiology can help you to think different thoughts. And when you think different thoughts, you will choose to use different words to express your opinions and feelings. And as your words change, so does your attitude.

This again will not be easy. You probably have certain ways that you tend to habitually use your body when youre in a bad mood. These habits will not be easy to break and will initially require some conscious effort. In fact, you might need to will your body to move a certain way, to breathe a certain way, or to stand a certain way in order to break your habitual patterns. However, with persistent effort you will make progress, and this is what will help you to shift to a more positive state-of-mind.

Lets go back to the example of feeling angry and turn it into curiosity. Ask yourself:

What would my body look like if I was feeling curious rather than angry?

How would I move?

How would I stand?

How would I sit?

How would I breathe?

How would I position my head?

How would I move my hands?

These questions might seem a little silly at first, however, they are well worth asking because when youre angry you will use your physiology in a very different way compared to when youre feeling curious.

Using your physiology from a state of curiosity will encourage you to think different thoughts, which will likewise transform the words you use to describe your feelings and emotions. And this will go a long way towards helping you cultivate a more positive and empowering mental attitude.

Its human nature to make comparisons. Some people make comparisons to others, while others make comparisons to their best selves. Both are helpful at certain times. For instance, self-to-other comparisons help you gauge where other people are at, and this helps fuel your competitive spirit. However, it can also make you feel inadequate and incapable if you fail to live up to other peoples standards and results. On the other hand, there are self-to-self comparisons. Making these comparisons is helpful because you are competing against your best self.

All this is relevant to attitude because often a poor mental attitude is linked to self-to-self comparisons. We consciously or unconsciously compare ourselves to others in an attempt to make ourselves feel better about ourselves. However, if we are unable to live up to the standards that other people set, then its easy to feel somewhat worthless and inadequate. And its from this place that a negative mental attitude often comes to the surface and manifests in excuses and complaints.

To avoid this scenario, choose instead to only make self-to-self comparisons. Compare yourself to your best self, and leave the self-to-other comparisons to others.

The reason why you have a poor mental attitude is because you have all these unfulfilled expectations that are weighing heavily on your shoulders.

When in a negative state of mind youre either indulging in the past by holding onto grudges, regrets, and anger. Or you are focusing on the future filled with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty. Focusing on the past or future brings you no respite or relief. So whats the point of focusing in this way? Instead, encourage yourself to focus on being more mindful of the present moment.

Within the present moment, there are no regrets, there is no anger, and there is no fear or anxiety. All that exists in the present moment is choice and opportunity. In the present moment, you can only focus on whats before you, right here, right now. And whats before you presents you with an opportunity to choose a better path moving forward. However, in order to find that opportunity in the present moment, you must get out of your head and let go of all your expectations, hurts, fears, anxieties, etc. You will only change by letting these things go, and the best way to do that is to become mindful of the present moment.

Whether you are consciously aware of it or not, you are always asking questions. Some questions are helpful, while others may not be so helpful, and will, therefore, tend to prolong a poor mental attitude.

The great thing about questions is that they help direct your focus and attention to specific things. When for instance you are focusing on the negatives and on whats not working, then you will tend to feel miserable, and that will come across in the attitude you project out into the world. However, when youre focusing on whats working, on what you have, and on what you can control, then your attitude likewise changes. You are no longer feeling regret, disappointment, or complaining about things. You are instead focused on the things that can help you move forward in a more positive way.

Questions will help you direct your focus in exactly this way. However, you will, of course, need to ask yourself the right kinds of questions to help focus your mind on the things that will help encourage a positive mental attitude. Here are some examples of questions you could potentially ask yourself:

Whats great about this?

What opportunities exist here?

How can I grow from this experience?

How can I make myself feel great about this?

How can this be seen in a more positive light?

How must I modify my approach?

By taking the time to genuinely answer these questions you are directing your focus to things that matter most. These things will help you see the situation in a better light, and will put you in a more positive and optimal frame-of-mind. And as your focus changes, your attitude shifts and you subsequently put yourself in a more advantageous position to make the best of every situation and opportunity.

There is a reason why you might have a poor attitude. And that often comes down to the company you keep.

The attitude you consistently project into the world probably very closely resembles the attitude of your peers. Therefore, if their attitude is poor, then your attitude will also be poor. If they always complain, make excuses, blame and focus on problems, then you probably also do this. This, of course, will not be true in all cases. However, for the most part, your five closest peers/friends will often mirror your attitude as much as you mirror their attitude. For this very reason, its absolutely critical that you select the people you choose to hang out with very carefully.

Have a think about some of your closest friends and confidants and ask yourself:

How do these people influence me?

Do I complain about the same things they complain about?

Do I blame others in the same way they blame others?

Do I make similar excuses?

What have these people got me thinking?

What have these people got me saying?

What have these people got me emotionalizing?

How are these people influencing my state-of-mind?

How are they influencing the attitude I project out into the world?

If you take the time to honestly ask yourself these questions, I think you will find that your peers have a greater influence on your attitude then you might have initially imagined for better or worse. If its on the worse side, then you might want to reconsider who you spend most of your time with. Choose people who will inspire and challenge you to view your life and circumstances in a more positive and optimal way. That is in itself one of the quickest ways to transform a poor mental attitude.

When making any changes in your life, you will typically move through four distinct steps:

You initially accept the fact that you cant change. At this stage, you are resistant to change and struggle with the notion that things must change irrespective of how bad things might be. Yes, your attitude might not be great, however, there just isnt enough pain to instigate a change.

The second step is recognizing that there is actually a need for change and that you must start doing things that will help you make positive changes in your life. This is where the pain sets in, and you realize that the consequences of not changing are too costly and hurtful in the long-run.

The third step is the decision you make that a change must be made. You no longer wish to indulge in a poor mental attitude, and instead, you want to be different you want to make a positive change for the better. And its actually in these moments of decision that the seeds of change are planted.

The final step of this process is the affirmation that you are no longer your old self, but rather a different self who has changed for the better. And because you see yourself as this new person, you start making different choices and decisions that are aligned with the thoughts, values, beliefs, and attitudes of this new person.

As you go through this attitude transformation process, you will typically move through each of these steps. This process may take time, however with a little persistent effort, even the most stubborn of habits can be transformed.

When it comes to success in any field of endeavor, it all comes down to the attitude you project out into the world. If your attitude is poor, you will make poor choices, and may very well create unnecessary conflict and problems for yourself. However, when your attitude is coming from an empowering state-of-mind, then this will lead to better decisions that can help you solve problems and take advantage of the opportunities that life presents you with. As such, your attitude forms the bedrock of everything you desire to do, be, have and achieve in life. With a positive mental attitude, the world is your oyster. Without it, the world will just throw mud in your face.

What is Self-Awareness and Why is it Important? [+5 Ways …

From the ancient Greek Aphorism know thyself to western psychology, the topic of self-awareness has been studied by philosophers and psychologists for the last century.

In this article, we will cover what self-awareness is, how it can be beneficial in a therapy session, why it is difficult to achieve, and how one can cultivate it.

It is worthwhile to reflect on this overlooked attribute. After all, high levels of self-awareness benefit oneself and ones social relations.

Simply put, self-awareness is an awareness of the self, with the self-being what makes ones identity unique. These unique components include thoughts, experiences, and abilities.

The psychological study of self-awareness can be first traced back to 1972. Psychologists Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklunds developed the theory of self-awareness.

They proposed that:

when we focus our attention on ourselves, we evaluate and compare our current behavior to our internal standards and values. We become self-conscious as objective evaluators of ourselves.

In essence, they consider self-awareness a major mechanism of self-control.

Psychologist Daniel Goleman proposed a popular definition of self-awareness in his best-selling book Emotional Intelligence, as knowing ones internal states, preference, resources, and intuitions.

This definition places more emphasis on the ability to monitor our inner world, our thoughts and emotions as they arise.

In my view, it is important to recognize that self-awareness is not only about what we notice about ourselves but also how we notice and monitor our inner world.

Have you ever held judgment towards yourself regarding the thoughts or experiences you have? If so, then you are not alone, and there it is time to work towards a non-judgemental reflection of yourself.

This isof courseeasier said than done.

If non-judgmental quality is an essential component of self-awareness, how do we work towards that?

As we notice whats happening inside us, we can acknowledge and accept them as the inevitable part of being human, rather than giving ourselves a hard time about it.

Hint: if you have ever said to yourself I should/shouldnt have done it, then you know what I mean. Next time you are judging something you said or did, consider the question:

Is what I experienced also a chance to learn and grow? Have other humans possibly made a similar mistake and learned from it?

Self-awareness goes beyond accumulating knowledge about ourselves: it is also about paying attention to our inner state with a beginners mind and an open heart.

Our mind is extremely skillful at storing information about how we react to a certain event to form a blueprint of our emotional life (source).

Such information often ends up conditioning our mind to react in a certain way as we encounter a similar event in the future.

Self-awareness allows us to be conscious of this conditioning and preconceptions of the mind, which can form the foundation of freeing the mind from it.

Self-awareness is the key cornerstone to emotional intelligence, according to Daniel Goleman.

The ability to monitor our emotions and thoughts from moment to moment is key to understanding ourselves better, being at peace with who we are and proactively managing our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

In addition, self-aware people tend to act consciously (rather than react passively), and tend to be in good psychological health and to have a positive outlook on life. They also have a greater depth of life experience and are more likely to be more compassionate.

An investigation by Sutton (2016) also examined the component parts of self-awareness and their benefits.

This study found that the self-reflection, insight, and mindfulness aspects of self-awareness can lead to benefits such as becoming a more accepting person, while the rumination and mindfulness aspects can lead to emotional burdens.

A number of researches have shown self-awareness as a crucial trait of successful business leaders.

In a study undertaken by Green Peak Partners and Cornell University, 72 executives at public and private companies were studied. They all had revenues from $50 million to $5 billion, and it was found that a high self-awareness score was the strongest predictor of overall success.

Self-awareness is also crucial for psychotherapists.

Therapists need to be aware of their own biases, values, stereotypical beliefs, and assumptions in order to appropriately serve culturally diverse clients (Oden et al., 2009).

It has also been called a precursor to multicultural competence (Buckley & Foldy, 2010). In other words, self-awareness allows counselors to understand the differences between their lived experiences and their clients lived experiences.

This can help counselors be more nonjudgmental towards their clients, and help them better understand their clients.

If self-awareness is so important, why arent we more self-aware?

The most obvious answer is that most of the time we are simply not there to observe ourselves. In other words, we are not there to pay attention to whats going on inside or around us.

Psychologists Matthew Killingsworth and Daniel T. Gilbert found that almost half of the time we operate on automatic pilot or unconscious of what we are doing or how we feel, as our mind wanders to somewhere else other than here and now.

In addition to the constant mind-wandering, the various cognitive bias also affects our ability to have an accurate understanding of ourselves; we tend to believe narratives that support our already existing sense of self.

For example, if we have a solid belief that we are a high-quality and loyal friend, then we are likely to interpret eventseven ones where perhaps we did make a mistakeas an anomaly of our identity as that loyal friend.

This pre-existing belief about ourselves might influence how we handle the aftermath of, say, forgetting about a lunch date with a friend.

Additionally, confirmation bias can trick us into searching for or interpreting information in a way that confirms our pre-conception of something.

Have you ever had that feeling when youve accepted a job offer, but are still looking for extra assurance that it is the perfect job for you? That is confirmation bias, in its finest.

Furthermore, the lack of the willingness to seek feedback could also work against us if we want to have a more holistic view of ourselves through the eyes of others.

If we want to cultivate our own self-awareness, how do we reconcile that with these psychological tendencies where we only acknowledge certain versions of ourselves?

It is not easy, but there are some options.

What further complicates the picture is the different aspects of the self we relate to in everyday life.

Daniel Kahneman, is a Nobel Prize winner for his contribution to behavioral science.

In his TED talk, Kahneman explains the difference between the experiencing self and the remembering self, and how this affects our decision-making.

He explains how we feel about the experience at the moment and how we remember the experience can be very different and share only 50% correlation.

This difference can have a significant impact on the story we are telling ourselves, the way we relate to self and others, and the decision we make, even though we may not notice the difference most of the time.

For our purposes, let us say that self-awareness consists of being mindful of our identities and lived experiences and how they relate to those of other people.

Self-focused attention consists of simply thinking about ourselves.

For example, self-focused attention might mean that a counselor thinks about how anxious they are about the therapy session, which leads to the client feeling that the counselor is not paying attention to them.

Self-awareness, on the other hand, would mean that the counselor realizes that if they are anxious about the session, it may indicate that the client is anxious about the session, and uses this to try to help the clients anxiety as well as their own.

In other words, as one researcher concludes, self-awareness might be a tool to decrease the negative impact of hindering self-focused attention on counseling self-efficacy (Wei et al., 2017). This studyoffers an important look into how counselors can change this habit, and move towards self-awareness while meeting with clients.

Being self-aware about all aspects of ones thoughts is crucial, rather than being aware of the current emotion one is feeling.

Some of the strategies that therapists can use to stop self-awareness from being distracting include remembering to focus on the client, their needs, and the goals of the counseling session.

Another strategy is using self-awareness as a way to better understand the client, rather than only being self-aware of ones thoughts and appearing distracted.

If you are not a counselor or in the field, there are many more ways to increase self-awareness in your everyday life.

The tremendous benefits of high self-awareness can be felt by anyone who puts time towards it.

Self-awareness, as arguably the most fundamental issue in psychology, from both a developmental and an evolutionary perspective, is a rich and complicated subject.

As human beings, we may never fully understand ourselves, if there is such a destination. But perhaps it is the journey of exploring, understanding and becoming ourselves that makes life worth living.

Whether you want to be more accepting of yourself or more accepting of others, cultivating self-awareness is a good place to start.
