We need to start teaching cybersecurity in elementary school – World Economic Forum
Posted: at 10:46 am
There are basic lessons children need to learn early in life to ensure their safety. Look both ways before crossing the street. Wear seatbelts. Avoid talking to strangers.
Its time to add another to the list: Beware hackers and cyber creeps.
In this era of rapid technological advancement, children need to immerse themselves in technology at a young age in order to start learning the skills they will use throughout their lives.
But they also need to be warned about the risks that accompany all those cool smartphone and computer applications. All too often, that isnt happening.
Elementary school teachers should include these cybersecurity basics in their everyday curricula. At a minimum, every young child should know how to keep their information private, to refrain from responding to strangers and to report anything unusual to an adult. Today, many dont.
Cyberattacks are nothing new, of course. But what is less understood is the extent to which children increasingly are being targeted. About one in four youth in the US will experience identity theft or fraud before they reach the age of 18, according to a 2019 estimate by the consumer credit reporting company Experian. Fraudsters are targeting their clean credit histories and, increasingly, their virtual wallets.
Whats more, about one in five American young people experience unwanted online exposure to sexually explicit material, while one in nine experience online sexual solicitation, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health.
The latest figures show that 56% of 8-12-year-olds across 29 countries are involved in at least one of the world's major cyber-risks: cyberbullying, video-game addiction, online sexual behaviour or meeting with strangers encountered on the web.
Using the Forum's platform to accelerate its work globally, #DQEveryChild, an initiative to increase the digital intelligence quotient (DQ) of children aged 8-12, has reduced cyber-risk exposure by 15%.
In March 2019, the DQ Global Standards Report 2019 was launched the first attempt to define a global standard for digital literacy, skills and readiness across the education and technology sectors.
The 8 Digital Citizenship Skills every child needs
Image: DQ Institute
Our System Initiative on Shaping the Future of Media, Information and Entertainment has brought together key stakeholders to ensure better digital intelligence for children worldwide. Find our more about DQ Citizenship in our Impact Story.
The main reason hackers and online fraudsters focus on youth is because children have easy access to the internet and smartphone apps and only minimal knowledge of the risks. Nearly half of American children ages three and four use the internet from their home, according to the National Center of Education Statistics.
Voluntary programmes in the US and elsewhere teach cyber literacy in greater depth than most national standards require. They range from cyber summer camps and national competitions to education modules for teachers to use in the classroom. But many are designed primarily for middle school and high school students. In Israel, for example, the Cyber Education Centers Magshimim programme teaches high school students computer programming skills and how to mitigate different types of cyberattacks.
A handful of voluntary programmes provide online safety resources for elementary school students, beginning in kindergarten. Through its National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center (NICERC), the Department of Homeland Security offers free full-year K-12 STEM and cybersecurity courses to teachers and school districts. The Air Force Associations national CyberPatriot education programme offers free teaching modules like security showdown to teach kindergarteners what information is safe to share with strangers online, and publishes childrens books like Sarah the Cyber Hero.
Kids can absorb this information like sponges. In just one day, through its CyberFirst initiative, the UK's National Cyber Security Centre teaches children as young as 11 how to avoid the most common passwords, what information is collected every time they use social media, and how to track down patient zero when a cyberattack hits.
But such programmes, helpful though they are, dont reach millions of primary school students already at risk of becoming cyber victims.
As a cybersecurity expert, I prepare people for worst-case scenarios - and over the years, I have seen many of them materialize. Cyberattacks are todays greatest threats to businesses, governments and societies. Every time technological innovations redefine what is possible, they simultaneously create new, unpredictable and interlinked vulnerabilities.
The combination of technological advances, higher interconnectivity and delays in cyber awareness permits global cyberattacks to spread like contagions. Targets are bigger than ever before and are leaving broader collateral damage.
Cyberattacks are no longer just concerns for companies and governments. Over the summer, a series of attacks on school district systems prompted Louisiana governor John Bel Edwards to declare a statewide emergency.
It doesnt have to be this way. As teachers incorporate more online educational tools into their curricula and parents permit children to play with online apps, they can simultaneously teach students of all ages basic cybersecurity skills and encourage them to become cybersecurity experts themselves. Children can be equipped to protect themselves from cyberthreats automatically, just like they look both ways before crossing the street.
Kids can soak up basic cybersecurity skills as rapidly as they pick up new technologies. We owe it to them to make that possible.

Expert to speak in Boca on science of happiness – Palm Beach Post
Posted: at 10:46 am
Everyone wants to be happy.
And the pursuit of it is so fundamental to the human condition that the Founding Fathers put it right up there at the top of the Declaration of Independence as one of our inalienable rights.
But for too many of us in todays fast-paced world, we dont know how to achieve lasting happiness.
Enter Yale professor of psychology Laurie Santos who will be speaking on this very topic at Festival of the Arts Boca on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Her symposium, Psychology and the Good Life, is a one-hour version of the wildly popular Yale course she created two years ago and which has since become a worldwide phenomenon.
Stressed-out student body
In 2016, Santos an expert in human cognition, its origins and the evolutionary biases that influence peoples thinking was named the head of Silliman College, one of 14 undergraduate residential colleges at the university.
When I started living on campus, I saw just how widespread the stress and unhappiness was among students, she said. They were having a very different college experience than what I remembered having.
Research has also confirmed this.
According to national surveys taken around campuses, 40% of students said they were depressed and hopeless, 60% of them felt anxious and 60% said they felt lonely.
To counteract this trend, Santos created a semester-long course called Psychology and the Good Life.
The goal, she said, was to create a positive psychology curriculum that presented students both scientific research and evidence-based, real-world strategies that they could incorporate into their own daily lives.
I wanted to give them behaviors they could put into practice right away, explained Santos.
The class became the most popular in the universitys 300-plus-year history, with 25% of the student body (some 1,200 students) enrolling.
We had to hold it a concert hall, she said.
Santos explained that many of our intuitions about what will make us happy are incorrect.
For instance, research has shown that neither financial wealth nor material acquisitions are good predictors of personal happiness.
"Your circumstances dont determine how happy you are, she said. Your mindset does.
In addition, the self-imposed pressure students put on themselves to get top grades led to them spending untold hours of stress-filled studying and missing out on the joys of college life.
Santos explained to them that they had to rewire their brains in order to adapt the kind of behaviors that would enable them to experience more happiness.
I gave them weekly assignments that were called reWIREments instead of requirements.
Among them:
Write a letter of gratitude.
Perform a daily random act of kindness.
Meditate.
Exercise.
Get at least seven hours of sleep for three nights in a given week.
Reach out to a stranger.
Have more real-world social interactions.
In adopting these new behaviors and trying to turn them into habits, students found that practicing self-care often meant looking outside of themselves.
One of her students told the Washington Post on the the last day of that inaugural 2018 course, I feel different physically and mentally I dont feel so weighted down by things. Its something you have to work on every day ... If I keep using these skills, theyll, over time, help me develop better habits and be happier. I hope theyll stay with me the rest of my life.
As word about the happiness class spread first around campus and then in the national media Santos created an abbreviated version of the course called The Science of Well-Being that she made available at the online education site Coursera.org.
To date, more than 516,000 people worldwide have enrolled in the online course.
She also created a podcast called The Happiness Lab that builds on the information first presented in her university lectures.
Being happy doesnt just happen, Santos said. You have practice the habits that will lead to happiness.

The longest holiday: parents coping with coronavirus school closures in east Asia – The Guardian
Posted: at 10:46 am

Its been a long holiday, laughs Hong Kong insurance worker and mother, Sarah Wong.
Wong and her two daughters, Chloe and Greeta, are at a co-working space in Jordan, Kowloon. Chloe has set her desk up like home, with an iPad, her own lamp, and an aromatherapy diffuser. The girls, aged 12 and eight, are listening to online lessons from their school which has been closed because of the coronavirus.
What is Covid-19 - the illness that started in Wuhan?
It is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before. Like other coronaviruses, it has come from animals. Many of those initially infected either worked or frequently shopped in the Huanan seafood wholesale market in the centre of the Chinese city.
Have there been other coronaviruses?
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers) are both caused by coronaviruses that came from animals. In 2002, Sars spread virtually unchecked to 37 countries, causing global panic, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing more than 750. Mers appears to be less easily passed from human to human, but has greater lethality, killing 35% of about 2,500 people who have been infected.
What are the symptoms caused by the new coronavirus?
The virus can cause pneumonia. Those who have fallen ill are reported to suffer coughs, fever and breathing difficulties. In severe cases there can be organ failure. As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work. Recovery depends on the strength of the immune system. Many of those who have died were already in poor health.
Should I go to the doctor if I have a cough?
UK Chief Medical Officers are advising anyone who has travelled to the UK from mainlandChina, Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14 days and who is experiencing a cough or fever or shortness of breath to stay indoors and call NHS 111, even if symptoms are mild.
Is the virus being transmitted from one person to another?
Chinas national health commission has confirmed human-to-human transmission, and there have been such transmissions elsewhere.
How many people have been affected?
As of 3 March, the outbreak has affected more than 89,000 people globally, with atotal death toll in excess of 3,000. In mainland China, of the80,151 confirmed cases, over 44,000 people have recovered, and 2,943 (or 3.6%) have died. Over 125 deaths have occurred outside ofChina.
The coronavirus has spread tomore than 60 other countries. The worst affected include South Korea with nearly 5,000 cases, and Iran, with over 1,500 cases.
There have been40 recorded cases and no fatalities to date in the UK.
Why is this worse than normal influenza, and how worried are the experts?
We dont yet know how dangerous the new coronavirus is, and we wont know until more data comes in. The mortality rate is around 2% at the centre of the outbreak, Hubei province, and less than that elsewhere. For comparison, seasonal flu typically has a mortality rate below 1% and is thought to cause about 400,000 deaths each year globally. Sars had a death rate of more than 10%.
Another key unknown is how contagious the coronavirus is. A crucial difference is that unlike flu, there is no vaccine for the new coronavirus, which means it is more difficult for vulnerable members of the population elderly people or those with existing respiratory or immune problems to protect themselves. Hand-washing and avoiding other people if you feel unwell are important. One sensible step is to get the flu vaccine, which will reduce the burden on health services if the outbreak turns into a wider epidemic.
Is the outbreak a pandemic?
A pandemic, in WHO terms, is the worldwide spread of a disease. Coronavirus cases have been confirmed outside China, but by no means in all 195 countries on the WHOs list. It is also not spreading within those countries at the moment, except in a very few cases. By far the majority of cases are travellers who picked up the virus in China.
Should we panic?
No. The spread of the virus outside China is worrying but not an unexpected development. The WHO hasdeclared the outbreak to be a public health emergencyof international concern. The key issues are how transmissible this new coronavirus is between people, and what proportion become severely ill and end up in hospital. Often viruses that spread easily tend to have a milder impact. Generally, the coronavirus appears to be hitting older people hardest, with few cases in children.
Sarah Boseley,Hannah DevlinandMartin Belam
Thank you for your feedback.
Across the world, governments are ordering or contemplating school closures in a bid to slow the spread of the virus. French officials closed about 120 schools in areas that have reported the largest numbers of infections, its education minister said on Tuesday.
In some countries parents have already had their children at home for more than a month. Some have taken holidays or sent the kids overseas to relatives.
Most Hong Kong schoolchildren never returned to school following the lunar new year holidays after the government announced and then extended closures to 20 April.
In the first few weeks it was a little bit troublesome, it messed up all our schedules not only the kids but all of our daily routine and work schedules, Wong says.
But the start of online classes brought back routine and relieved the girls boredom, Wong says, and shes lucky to have an employer who lets her work flexibly. Friends arent so fortunate and she says they are panicked.
When the weather is nice, Wong takes the girls to the playground or the beach, but amid calls for people to practise social distancing, theyre missing their friends.
On Hong Kong Island the age gap between Eiffel Chaus children kindergarten, grade one, and grade five has made it difficult to manage all three.
The youngest one in kindergarten doesnt have any online class, Chau says.
I just need to keep her busy so she wont disturb the other two kids. She has company, but she sees the parents at home so she expects the parents to do something with her.
Chau says hes lucky that hes permitted to work from home, as his wife is a teacher and is busy running online classes for her students.
His advice to other parents facing the same situation is to take advantage of it. Hong Kongs schooling is notoriously demanding, but Chau is using the extra time to teach his kids more responsibility for their home and chores, and to do more exercise.
At the same time its also a good opportunity for us to catch up with family relations, he says. We have nowhere to go, even on the weekend. We do board games, and card games, thats something we can take this chance to do.
In China, millions of students have been home from school since mid-February. Schools have been ordered to provide online lessons, and primary classes are reportedly broadcast on public television.
Officials have advised, and in some cases ordered, families to stay inside, making the absence of school even harder for restless children stuck at home. Online videos show families playing elaborate games.
A flood of advice online ranges from creating strict daily schedules to follow, to videos with home science experiments and tips for activities. A notice in February from the Gulou district in Beijing advised parents to cherish the time: The parent is the most important teacher in every childs life, it said.
But discussion topics such as what kind of life have parents been pressured into and school start date is postponed have more than 400m views and thousands of comments.
I just want to know when kindergarten starts, one wrote.
The kids are so destructive and parents are going crazy. I hope the epidemic passes as soon as possible, so that these destructive little beasts can study.
Others complained about the difficulty of supervising their kids online classes and heavy workload. One said: I am being tortured to death by these online classes. When will this end?
In Japan many working parents were horrified by the governments weekend announcement requesting every primary, middle and high school in the country to close until the start of the new academic year in mid-April.
The unprecedented shutdown, affecting almost 13 million pupils, has forced companies to rethink their rigid work practices, to allow working from home or shortening business hours.
Working mothers complained that the shutdown would force them to take time off, given the shortage of daycare facilities and the scarcity of nannies and babysitters.
An online poll by Yahoo Japan found 49% of parents said they would leave their children home alone, 20% would take time off work and 14% would enlist the help of grandparents. In a few cases, parents have had no choice but to take their children to work. They include Keiko Kobayashi, a senior manager at a multinational staffing service in Tokyo.
I was shocked by the news of the school closures, and thought, what should I do? Kobayashi told Associated Press. There was no explanation of how this is going to work.
Back in Kowloon, Wong looks at her girls studying at the table and smiles. I really hope they can go back to school soon, she says. They keep saying I want to go to school, which is good because before they didnt want to go.

5 signs you’re going to make (a lot) more money in the future – Ladders
Posted: March 2, 2020 at 4:46 pm
I told this storyin my book. Roughly six months before I broke the income barrier I needed to pave the path to quitting my full-time job, I was dead broke. A weekend of buying my kid a few fish and going to Chik Fil aput my account in the negative.
Even though my side hustles were bringing in money, I had bills up the you know what. Dont care if its politically incorrect. For me, as a man, it felt horrible to feel like I couldnt take care of my family.
Throughout the process of building my career from having to live with my pregnant partners parents to having$10,000 months on auto-pilot, I always knew one thing for certain:
I wasnt going to spend the rest of my life being broke.
Id die first. Literally, I knew in my heart I would die before giving up.
I didnt want to live out the statistics you often see:
I dont look down on people for not having money. In many ways, their lot in life isnt their fault at all.
Society is set up for you to fail. Without question, the gameisrigged. Sometimes I think people dont think I agree with them on that. I do.
You have toescapethis fate, make no mistake about it.
Lets take a look at some of the signs you have a fighting chance to do so.
Complaining about your current position in life is worthless. Have a spine and do something about it instead. Robert Kiyosaki
Nobodylikesbeing broke.
But in order to do the work it takes to become financially flexible, you have tohatebeing broke.
The only people who hate being broke but dont find their way out are the truly destitute. Middle-class people? They just dont want it bad enough. They dont hate the stress of living paycheck to paycheck enough to do anything about it.
I cant tell you how many times Ive projected out a future where I didnt have money and it scared me on a visceral level. Honestly, I was more afraid of being broke than I was inspired to make money.
Why? Because being broke isstressful.
Id have fights with my partner about money, stress about situations like the story I started the post with, and I just observed people who were struggling to get by and I couldnt fathom living the rest of my life like that.
You almost have to have a sense that being broke is beneath you, even though, of course, theres nothing wrong with being broke.
I remember working as a manager at a video store for $10/hr. Id go get tacos and Taco Johns. The sign on the door said hiring$11/hr. I put in all this work to make less than someone making god damned tacos. Nope. Not me. Not forever.
I used to listen to the book, Rich Dad Poor Dad, on repeat when I had to put on the signs for the featured movies out in the parking lot. Plotting. Patient. One day, I wouldnt be broke.
Now? Im not rich, but Im no longer broke. And it was worth all the work.
Let everyone else be content. You? Get pissed.Use that frustration to your advantageso you dont quit.
Earn with your mind, not your time. Naval Ravikant
Even if you have a job right now (which is the smart thing to do while you build your side hustle), you know that its impossible to have real financial flexibility and wealth with a job alone.
Youre putting your energy into something you can scale, something with leverage, something that can provide income for you without your direct work:
Having a sole source of income will leave you in a perpetual loop of middle class living at best.
See, its not just the risk, yes risk, of having a sole source of income thats the problem, but also thecounterproductive culturemost wage earners ascribe to:
Its a nasty trap.
If you want wealth, flexibility, whatever you call it, you need your money or effort to go to workfor youat some point.
But how do you put in the work required to build these asset vehicles?
Simple.
The thing about wealth pursuits? Theyre slow. Super slow.
Not only that, but you make little to no money in the beginning.
I talk about this all the time on myYouTube channel. I should just rename it exponential growth.
All the great things in life compound:
Warren Buffet didnt become a billionaireuntil he was in his60s. Those last 30 years or so of compounding took him to insane wealth.
Getting compounding to work is psychologically difficult:
I dont have the exact number, but five years is my educated guess.
If you tinkered around with some form of business, freelancing, or investing for five years without quitting, something good will happen.
Youre Humble Enough to be a Student of Life
Spend each day trying to be a little wiser than you were when you woke up. Day by day, and at the end of the day if you live long enough-like most people, you will get out of life what you deserve. Charlie Munger
Ironically, broke people seem to be the most certain of everything. I recently watched an interview with Munger. What stood out most? Every time he wasnt certain or near certain of an answer, he immediately defaulted to saying I dont know.
Wealthy people are often much more intellectually humble than middle-class people. They have coaches, mentors, advisers, teams. They constantly soak in new information and never think they have everything figured out.
Watch this interview withDiddy and Ray Dalio.
Diddy, who has a net worth in the hundreds of millions, asks Dalio, his mentor, advice with a sincere level of humility. Diddy doesnt have to listen to anybody and he could blow money until the day he dies, yet he treats knowledge with a level of respect most content with what they have types cant fathom.
The only thing between most people and more money is knowledge.
Theres no grand conspiracy keeping you broke. Its definitely not the fault of billionaires. If you dont have money, its because you dont understand money. If you dont understand money, then learn how to understand it. Simple.
Just this week Ive started to devour information about:
Im going to eventually move all of this knowledge into my circle of competence.
I dont know much about any of the above, but Ill learn. Just like I learned to make money on the internet with no prior experience and become a professional writer with no writing degree.
How? I read hundreds of books, watched thousands of hours of video, and practiced every day for five years.
Back to the point of time commitment. Spending a decade learning this stuff isnt a problem for me. Why? Because I like to learn and I know that learningcompounds.
If youre willing to learn books, podcasts, courses, YouTube videos you can figure all of this out.
Free education is abundant, all over the Internet. Its thedesire to learnthatsscarce. Naval Ravikant
I dont understand how people who own smartphones with access to YouTube say they have no access to resources. B.S. YouTube is a goldmine most people use it wrong.
At some point, you just have to admit youre being lazy andstop.
In the information age, there are no excuses.
Wake up! No one is going to save you. No one is going to take care of your family or your retirement. And no one is going to make things work out for you. The only way to do so is to utilize every moment of every day at 10X levels. Grant Cardone
If youre good at math, you just know you need a lot of money. Yes, need.
You need millions of dollars to retire on time and successfully. Add in your kids and their financial future, the ability to have amazing experiences like travel, and the time to enjoy your life without needing to work all the time, and youll understand that making money is the only logical option.
Just look around and the way people live. The stress. You need more money than you have right now. More importantly, you need more flexibility and income-earning assets than you have right now.
If youre young like me (30), dont waste any more of your time. I can only imagine what it would feel like to be middle-aged or old with no money saved.
With a modest salary of $50,000 over a full work-life of say, 50 years (2272),you will have made $2,500,000. To make all of that money and end up with little to none of it seems soul-crushingly sad and insane, but it happens. Thinking about it makes me sick.
See, its these people who claim to not care about money who care about it the most. They fuck up the math. They keep up with the Joneses their whole lives and level up their lifestyle as their income increases, piling up debt along the way.
Be smart.
Look at the math it takes to be successful and create a plan. Earn more money and keep your living expenses low. Thats the recipe. Im greedy, but I drive a $2,500 car and live in a $1,300 two-bedroom while people who make less than me drive BMWs and have giant homes.
Ive done the math. Im fine to appear broke for this decade to be wealthy by the next one.
As Marshawn Lynch, who famously spent none of his NFL contract money and lived only off endorsements, said:
Take care of yo chicken.
Let the content people stay blind to financial literacy. Wait them out. Theyll see soon enough.
Stay humble, grind, reinvest in yourself.
Itll all work out.

Carrie Underwood Used To Wish She Had A Workout And Nutrition Manual. So She Wrote One. – Women’s Health
Posted: at 4:45 pm
Carrie Underwood is hanging off a rock-climbing wall as if shes auditioning for a role in Free Soloand totally nailing it.
FWIW, this is not an activity she does often: I went rappelling once as a kid and freaked out, she says.
But hesitation is nowhere in sight today as Carrie supports her body in a series of challenging poses without breaking a sweat.
When I first meet Carrie, shes walking back from brushing her teeth in the bathroom (What can I say, not every moment of a photo shoot is glamorous.) But from the moment she shakes my hand, I can tellhello, grip strengththat the CALIA by Carrie Underwood designer came ready to put on a show. The 5'3" singer is strong. The kind of strong that makes dangling from a vertical face seem easy. The kind of strong that makes her look as if she were born singing her heart out while commanding a stage in heels. I swear I use butt muscles to hit notes sometimes, she says.

That strength didnt happen by accidentand for the 36-year-old, it didnt happen overnight. Carrie, who characterizes herself as a vegetarian and wannabe vegan, grew up on a cattle farm in Checotah, Oklahoma, population 3,500. She remembers the exact moment she vowed to stop eating beef: when she was 13 and saw the calves shed grown up with getting neutered.
Her initial dedication to a plant-based diet was more about animal welfare than health. Carrie didnt pay much attention to nutrition or fitness until she encountered online message boards during her winning stint on American Idol in 2005. Carries getting fat, read one note.
I shouldnt care what other people think about me, Carrie says. But she also knew that the quesadillas and pasta shed been living on werent making her feel her best. I was tired, and I kept buying bigger clothes, she recalls. I knew I could be better for myself, and I let my haters be my motivators.
After she won American Idol, Carrie and the other contestants went on tour. She started reading labels, counting calories, and logging time on the elliptical. At first, she felt good. I was sleeping better, and I had more energy for our grueling schedule, she says. So she decided to take it further. If this is working, she reasoned, wouldnt it be better to exercise even more and eat a little less? Some days, she consumed as few as 800 calories.

By the time she attended her first CMA Awards in November 2005, her plan was starting to backfire. Sure, shed lost weight, but she was also finding it nearly impossible to stick to her strict diet. Her periods of restriction were almost always followed by overindulging. I would fall off the wagon, then feel terrible and repeat the cycle. Her newfound energy levels were also starting to dip. Your body is screaming out, I need more calories, I need more carbs! she says. When I ask if she feels she was suffering from disordered eating, Carrie pauses, then says thoughtfully, I really would not call it that. Instead, she feels she just lacked the knowledge to create parameters that worked for her.
Today, with her first book, Carrie has created the manual she wishes she had back then, Find Your Path: Honor Your Body, Fuel Your Soul, and Get Strong With Fit52Life, available now. Along with her trainer, Eve Overland, and nutritionist, Cara Clark, Carrie offers a framework to help women make smart choices year-round. (Stay tuned for the app this spring.)
So what does Carries current version of healthy look like? Its structured, but in a way that allows her to enjoy the occasional slice of cake. I love rules, says Carrie. This is how I feel good about myself, and this is how I operate. On that note, she tracks calories and macros (the amount of protein, carbs, and fat she consumes daily) on the app MyFitnessPal. Her happy place: 45 percent carbs, 30 percent fat, and 25 percent protein.

A typical day of eats for the star starts pre-workout, with a tofu or egg-white scramble, Ezekiel toast, berries, and coffee. At lunch, shell have a sandwich with Tofurky, tomato, avocado, red onion, spinach, and mustard. Her snack might be a green smoothie or protein bar. Then for dinner shell make roasted veggies and a piece of vegan chicken, or a tofu stir-fry.
Shes not a big dessert person, but she keeps squares of dark chocolate for when a craving strikes. I do have my vice, Carrie admits, and its red wine. Its good for my heart, right?! she laughs. She likes to unwind with a glass or two and The Bachelor.
While Carrie doesnt leave much to chance in terms of her diet, she is learning to roll with the punches when it comes to her workouts, now that shes the mother of two sons, Isaiah, 5, and Jake, 1. If I can work out seven days a weekwhich doesnt happen, but if I canIm going to, she says. Because the next week, I might get two days.
Her trainer, Eve, travels with her when shes on the road. (Check out Carries Instagram to peep the impressive mobile gym she built for tours.) But at home, Carrie primarily comes up with her own routines, which she maps out in a journal. When I walk in and dont have a plan, I usually walk out, she says, nodding in solidarity as I admit I usually do the same, as if we were two workout buddies exchanging gripes in the locker room.
Peggy Sirota
Carrie credits Eve for getting her hooked on liftingand for crafting the routine responsible for her incredibly sculpted legs. Warning: Its not for the faint of heart. Carries leg workout consists of six supersets of three moves, each done for three or four sets. Moves include tuck jumps, Romanian deadlifts (with 30- to 35-pound dumbbells), walking lunges (with 20- to 25-pound dumbbells), and elevated sumo squats (with a 50-pound dumbbell!). Im sore just thinking about it.
In between crushing leg days, Carrie runs outside when its warm or crafts mini challenges on the treadmill. I have to set goals for myself: Every 15 minutes Im going to hit 1.25 miles, then by the end of an hour Ill have run 5 miles, she says. Shes also hard at work on her pullup gameshes up to eight.
The dedication to exercise and clean eating may seem intense, but its refreshing to speak to a celebrity whos honest about what it takes to keep her body prepared to own the stagein constant motion no lessfor two hours a night on a five-month tour. Not to mention those evenings when shes walking a red carpet, camera-ready. Carrie doesnt pretend to eat pizza every night or claim to do only a few crunches every now and then to get those abs. She puts in workand knowing she can pull it off with two kids and a 24/7 job makes me feel I can find the motivation too.
Peggy Sirota
While Carries got her wellness routine on lock, she admits she could definitely improve when it comes to self-care. She calls exercise her anti-depressant and antianxiety medicationand says when she falls out of her routine, both she and her husband notice a shift in her mood. When I ask if shes learned other ways to maintain her equilibrium when she cant work out, she scrunches her face and says without hesitation, No.
Later, she elaborates: Thats a part of my personality I need to be better with. Id love to sit in a bubble bath, but thats not going to happen. My self-care is my gym time, and thats a stress reliever for me.
Carries certainly been through some tough times in recent years. Before the birth of her second son, she experienced three miscarriages. When we talk about it, tears come to her eyes. For my body to not be doing something it was supposed to do was a tough pill to swallow, she says. It reminded me Im not in control of everything.
She says opening up about the miscarriages felt like a weight lifted off my shouldersand since then, women tell her their stories. Its not a dirty secret. Its something many women go through, Carrie says.
Her relationship with her husband, former NHL player Mike Fisher, is also a source of energyeven though it may seem like a case of opposites attracting. He wears a jersey; she loves sequins. Shes basically vegan; he eats meat. The list goes on. But the gym is their common ground. They work out together when they can, or swap childcare duties so the other can sweat.
Theyve got a similar strategy at home. She buys groceries, makes dinners, packs lunches, etc. When its time for her to work? Mike takes over. Were a good team, she says.
While not all the pieces fit perfectly, Carrie has a structure in place to guide her on her (very busy) path. And even with the new book, her activewear line, and plans to work on new music, dont expect her to stray. Physical fitness makes everything else possible, she says. Carrie is clearly a woman who knows where her strengths lieand isnt afraid to use them.

Want to lose weight? These are the things you should NOT do – HOLA! USA
Posted: at 4:45 pm
Nowadays lots of people use diets to stay slim and healthy. However, to achieve the best results, you should make sure that you a follow nutritious diet, one that can help you lose weight by eating healthy plus doing some exercise.
Counting on the help of a nutrition specialist is the key to avoid cutting out foods that contain essential nutrients necessary for our body to function properly. Remember that avoiding absolutely everything is not the way to get that bikini body, and some methods can be completely counterproductive.
1. Dont starve yourself
Dont get it into your head that to lose weight you need to stop eating. This is a frequent error people make, focusing on the idea that eliminating food groups like carbohydrates, fats, or sugars, and even proteins, which are all vital for our body. Eating a mere 800 to 1000 calories per day and drinking less water, is a monumental mistake.
2. Drinking smoothies or eating single-group food
Experts insist that getting nutrition exclusively from green smoothies or diets in which you repeatedly consume the same food, does not work. This can make people suffer from dehydration caused by the diuretic ingredients in many detox smoothies, as well as generating the loss of muscular mass because of the lack of quality protein. This low calorie level will make your body burn muscle to get energy, and lose liquid instead of fat, creating a rebound effect that will mean you will put weight back on twice as fast when you stop dieting.
3. Skipping meals
Respecting meal times is a vital aspect of keeping your metabolism activated and accelerated. Skipping meals can seem like a good way to reduce calorie intake, but it will actually slow your metabolism down. The best thing to do is to eat every four hours, eating snacks like fibrous fruits in between meals, that will fill you up more quickly. These will become nutritious allies in your daily diet.

Don't go for the newest diet people are talking about, just eat healthier foods instead

Move over paleo, these diets don't solve the issue of being a healthier person. Instead focus on foods that are healthier and cutting calorie counts to achieve a healthier lifestyle for yourself.

There are so many options when looking for a new diet plan. There is keto, vegan, intermediate fasting, vegetarian, paleo, detox or juice cleanse and much more to choose from. These diets are trendy and unhealthy.
Fad diets often lead people to believe that there is a one-size-fits-all diet, and this is the one. The secrets out there isnt one perfect diet for all of us, said Lauren Keeney, a registered dietitian nutritionist and the owner and operator of Integrated Health LLC located in Moscow.
College is a colliding environment of lack of money and energy. When a student is lacking money, it is easier to buy staple items. These items look like ramen, canned veggies or soup and anything else that can be found at a low price. These low-price items are high in cholesterol and fat and they lack many of the key nutrients that are needed in a balanced diet. Low-cost foods also increase weight gain and fatigue.
It can come as no surprise that many college students are hopping on diet trends to lose weight fast, in the high stress and low energy environment. These fad diets are used to change a students look, weight and energy level.
I have done every diet you can do, from keto to fasting, said Hannah Bidon, a WSU junior majoring in nutrition and exercise physiology and minoring in psychology.
The diet is a quick fix that can have little to no effect on a students daily eating habits.
In my experience, I gave up and I couldnt do it. This was because it was unnatural for my body, Bidon said.
Starting a new diet can be exciting at first. Eventually the diet will come to an end, leaving the body feeling unhealthy and overall useless. Cutting out key components to a diet can harm the body.
Eat foods that your body craves and foods that make your body feel good, energized and satisfied. This means, eat what you enjoy and enjoy what you eat physically, mentally and emotionally, Keeney said.
Cutting out just carbs and fat can affect the body. Unless there are dietary restrictions or religious guidelines, an individual should provide their body with all food groups.
The students that want to change their diets for ethical and environmental reasons are very different from those who want to lose 10 pounds in eight days. They try the new diets of detox, juice cleanse, one large meal a day, keto, paleo and much more. There are fewer extreme ways of dieting and healthy choices.
Diets come to an end and so does that healthy eating. Many times, the diet trend does not change an individuals overall eating habits or relationship with food.
In the end I gained the weight back or felt unhealthy after the diet, Bidon said.
Diets dont last forever, it is easier to make life changes.
What many young adults lack in their diet is having a healthy relationship with food, Keeney said.
The best advice I was given was to balance the plate. Have all the food groups represented on the plate. Fruit and veggies, grain (bread, potatoes and more), protein (fish, eggs, tofu and nuts) and dairy (milk, yogurt and cheese).
Add more color to your diet, this way you can ensure youre getting a variety of nutrients to support your overall health, Keeney said.
Students can add nutritious and need food groups by adding in diverse veggies and sides to their main dish.
Take top ramen, for example. Overall it is not healthy. But it is cheap, so it is a staple in any students dorm, apartment, or house. It can be made healthier by adding a protein (I like an egg or two) and some green veggies. It not only looks more appetizing it can be more nutritious and filling.
Why even diet when it can end in gaining the weight back? I suggest making little healthy changes that can improve overall attitudes towards food. Little changes can make a big difference.
