Without the ability to motivate his Tottenham players, Jose Mourinho is finished – Goal.com

Spurs coach is on the longest winless run of his career and things don't look like improving any time soon, having criticised record signing Ndombele
Having only once previously arrived at a club midseason it seemed fair, back in December, to give Jose Mourinho a free hit until the end of the 2019-20 season, whenever that might end up being, not least because his unique genius is to harness the power of a small and vengeful clique.
Huddling together, preparing for war, requires an alchemy that was never likely to be possible while his predecessors vision was still lingering, and still disintegrating. It is hard to issue a rallying cry surrounded by burning rubble.
What has happened at Tottenham over the last three months has conformed to this expectation, and yet how Mourinho has handled it has severely damaged his own position.
Article continues below
Few managers in world football history have been so overwhelmingly defined by their psychological approach to the role. If that previously gave him time to sharpen swords, now it serves to undermine him. Unlike the concreteness of tactical set-plays, or the tangible nature of technical ability, psychological powers are ephemeral. Harnessing them depends on collective belief and, like fairies, the positive impact of motivation, optimism, and anger ceases to exist when nobody believes in it.
For someone like Mourinho, his fall through the game is having a devastating impact on his ability to manage by inspiration. Everyone, including the Spurs players, can now see the tricks that underpin his siege mentality approach; detect self-preservation where once it looked like charisma.
Whether Mourinho has changed over the last 10 years or merely our perception of his antics has changed, the outcome is the same: a man whose work is built on extraordinary motivational skills can no longer motivate an industry that believes they can see right through him.
Judging by the most recent outbursts, it would appear that something has shifted internally for Mourinho, too. It is as if, with age, Mourinho has fallen into the same trap as Arsene Wenger: privilege, success, and respect can blunt the edges, leaving captains of industry blind to the constant hard work required to stay at the top.
The Spurs manager comes across as a man unwilling to accept the difficulty of the job. But more importantly, with every fresh attack on his players Mourinho reveals his methods are from an era that, to the current squad, must feel like centuries old.
Football's old school blame todays snowflake culture on young footballers being pampered millionaires, when in fact to emerge from the extraordinary stress of a hyper-competitive academy system means the modern player is more resilient than any generation before them. They just dont respond positively to being attacked because, well, why should they?
When Mourinho launches into an attack on Tanguy Ndombele, he reveals the chasm between generations. It is a method that cannot work anymore.
Of course, none of Mourinhos off-field behaviour would matter to Tottenham fans if results were better, and yet this record cannot be disentangled from the mental side. Mourinho is on a six-game winless run, the longest of his managerial career, and Spurs have conceded an alarming 38 goals in 26 games while playing meandering, directionless football. But there is little value in directly critiquing the formation or the team shape.
We still dont know what Mourinho is trying to do, because none of his instructions are sticking. How else to explain such porousness between the lines, such carelessness with the ball? The only explanation is that belief in his approach has already faded. And belief, that transient state so often found and lost in football, is the foundation of everything Mourinho has achieved.
Without it, he is finished.

Syracuse refuses to divulge motivation of students punished for ‘acts of hate’ – The College Fix

Syracuse refuses to divulge motivation of students punished for acts of hate
Federal student privacy law is not stopping it from sharing details
Syracuse has been reeling from racial protests, racist demands and silly suggestions for the past several months, spurred by bewildering graffiti left in a residence hall.
Last month Chancellor Kent Syverud said it has punished three students, some with suspensions, for acts of hate.
What did they actually do? Syracuse is refusing to say, but given what we know about its punishment of students for their expression, it may be less shocking than the hate label suggests.
Syverud claims the student conduct process prevents the university from providing any details about the investigation and the culprits, including whether its connected the Day Hall graffiti.
Thats odd because The Daily Orange notes that Syracuse provided rather specific detail for an earlier punishment: suspending four members (one detail) of Alpha Chi Rho (two) after members and guests shouted a racial slur at a Black woman (three). It also noted that Syracuse mentioned the incident (anti-Semitic graffiti in a library) behind a more recent punishment in January.
The College Fix emailed Syracuse media relations Thursday afternoon seeking the motivation for the acts of hate that Syracuse gleaned from its investigation. Not the perpetrators names or anything that could identify them just their motivations.
The Fix pointed Syracuse to another incident that made clear that federal student privacy law often invoked by universities to withhold information from the public wasnt stopping it from sharing such details.
Nearly five years ago, Duke University publicly said a student who hung a noose from a tree admitted that he didnt understand the threatening message it conveyed and had intended to invite friends to hang out.
In keeping with their continued refusal to do their jobs, media relations staff have not replied to the Fix query.
MORE: Supposed hate incident at Duke turns out to be bad joke
Its hard to avoid the possibility that Syverud simply wants to avoid scrutiny for what the university considers acts of hate. Consider that it expelled a racially diverse fraternity, indefinitely suspended some members and threatened to dox them because of leaked video of its satirical pledge skits from a private Facebook group. (The university got away with it because of an internally contradictory court ruling.)
This is what Syracuse considers acts of hate. This is why the public should demand further detail from Syverud.
The chancellors refusal to provide detail is creating anxiety among the residents of the dorm targeted with racial graffiti, who worry that their own neighbors are secret bigots, the Daily reported last week:
While the messages [posted in the dorm in response to the graffiti] contain colorful images and positive messages such as there is no room for hate here, many students living in Day said they still feel tension on their floors.
Josh Rosendo, a resident on the fourth floor of Day, said the hate incidents have strained his relationships with his neighbors because no one knows whos responsible for the acts.
Walking down the halls, now we dont want to say hi to people (because) we think it might be (them), Rosendo said. Its horrible, pointing fingers at each other. But it is what were doing now because we want to know who it is.
Michaela Varvis, a student living on the fifth floor, said she looked at everyone she encountered differently in the days after the incidents occurred.
You dont necessarily expect the people youre in the elevator with to be racist, homophobic or anti-Semitic, Varvis said. It makes me angry every time I get a bias-incident email, especially when it happens in Day. I dont like feeling like my neighbors or the people I walk past in the hall are bad people.
Nothing is preventing Syracuse from informing students in some detail about the results of its investigations of alleged hate incidents on campus. It doesnt have to identify the perps.
It can simply give the students closure about an incident that continues to disturb them because it remains shrouded in mystery and hold itself accountable to its community, including the parents who pay tuition for the students who end up in its Star Chamber.

Are you lacking in motivation or struggling to get into a regular gym routine? This can be completelynormal, but alsosuperfrustrating. Here are some top self-motivation tips to help encourage you to make your morning workout or evening exercise class.
Prep As Much As Possible
One of the main steps to success in life is ensuring youre as prepared as possible. Whether its for an interview or a productive workout if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail. Aim to have your gym bag packed and ready by the door the day/night before your workout is planned, and also ensure your water bottle and any snacks or meals are also prepared for you to just grab before you leave the house. This prevents you from procrastinating and wasting any time and also means you have no excuses not to attend.
Sleep in Your Gym Kit
Another great tip, especially if youre aiming to be an early bird and squeeze a workout in before work, is to sleep in your gym kit. That way, when your alarm goes off in the morning, you simplyneed to jump out of bed, brush your teeth and go! You are far less likely to snooze your alarm or skip the gym and get changed out of your workout gear into your work clothes as youre already halfway there!
Think Ahead
No matter how much you love or hate exercise, sometimes the thought of it just isnt appealing. You may find the idea ofa jam-packed gym off-putting, or you may just feel too tired or sluggish to attend. Try to visualize the feeling you get when you leave the gym and associate this with the thought of your future workouts instead of the dread. If you know you leave the gym with a clear mind, enjoying the release of endorphins and feeling full of energy, then focus on that feeling instead, and look forward to achieving that when you walk out of your workout.

Agents, it’s time to be the leaders you claim to be – HousingWire
Posted: at 10:42 am
Real estate agents, youve been practicing for this moment for years.
Hear me out. Whether you realize it yet or not, your community needs you. They need your unique leadership right now, more than ever. And many agents have been polishing their video and communication skills through marketing efforts for a long time. They have skills and influence that can now be used to unite the neighborhood.
Agents everywhere have an opportunity a responsibility, even to be the adult in the room; to be a beacon of hope, positivity, honesty and optimism for those in their communities who see them as local experts or local leaders. Furthermore, video is the perfect medium to reach a large number of people quickly and inexpensively.
During tough times, people look to their leaders for reassurance and guidance. At a national level, a state level, all the way down to their local neighborhoods. Leadership is necessary during the best of times, and absolutely crucial during tough times.
Many agents have become leaders in their communities, whether they realized it was happening or not. Additionally, weve learned a thing or two about how to reach our community. We just thought we were marketing: growing our brand and attempting to grow our influence and credibility. But really, weve been practicing.
Weve been practicing for a time just like this. A time where people need clarity and leadership. People need a voice of reason. They especially need it smack-dab in the middle of their newsfeed.
This is why I believe Realtors right now have the opportunity, through video, podcasting, social stories etc. to make a major difference in peoples lives. For those who already follow you and find you credible, you have the chance to calm nerves and provide reassurance for a scared, nervous community.
While you are publishing videos aimed at calming nerves, you can also really grow your market share and name recognition locally as many of your competitors play defense and scale back their marketing dollars.
During times of fear and panic, many professionals and business owners scale back their marketing efforts. Even more, they scale back what they spend on marketing. Playing defense does sound reasonable. I completely understand it. Its the natural response when uncertainty rules the day.
However, the majority of agents pushing pause creates an amazing opportunity for anyone willing to step up and spend more on marketing during this time of decreased competition.
Your competitors are literally sitting on the sidelines until things normalize or until they feel comfortable spending money on marketing again. Should you sit next to them and wait it out? Possibly. Thats 100% for you to decide, and it is a very personal thing to consider.
But if youre in a position where you have a few extra dollars that you can allocate to a Facebook ad campaign, or finally hiring an editor to put together some marketing videos for you do it! This is a huge opportunity.
One of the biggest takeaways I got from Grant Cardones 10X book was that in 2008 and 2009 when most entrepreneurs stopped spending money on advertising he doubled his ad spend! He saw that everyone else was clearing a path for him to be seen by more people, for much less money. So he took it.
Fast forward to now, and everyone knows who Grant Cardone is. Hes become a celebrity and a huge influencer in the entrepreneur space. But would he be had he not taken advantage of the Great Recession? According to him, no!
Were in a very unique time where we can make a huge difference for our neighbors, possibly helping to save lives, while also setting the table for massive business growth and brand recognition six months, a year, two years down the road. The hard part is that its intangible. Whether or not it worked is not something we will know until time has passed. We wont know if we did enough until were looking backward.
A year from today, when the economy is likely recovering, we have a coronavirus vaccine and were making our way back as a society, ask yourself this question when reflecting on these unprecedented times that were in:
Did I do enough?
Did you do everything you could to reach your neighbors and be a positive resource to them? But also, did you put as much as you wanted to into marketing and advertising while everything went on sale, and your competitors took a breather?
Time will tell.
Agents, its time we all step up and guide our neighbors through these incredibly trying times. Well all be better off for it, in more ways than one.

Campus, dorms closed for coronavirus, leaving some LGBTQ students with nowhere to go – Vox.com
Posted: at 10:41 am
When she heard that her university campus would be shutting down after spring break due to the coronavirus pandemic, Alexis feared her life could fall apart.
She wasnt able to afford campus housing this semester and is living instead in a nearby homeless shelter. But she depended on her schools health and fitness center for daily showers and her schools library for quiet study time.
My whole life revolves around the university, and the university is closed, said Alexis, a 34-year-old trans woman and student at the University of Eastern Michigan. (A university spokesperson told Vox that campus dining halls are still open for grab and go meals in accordance with a Monday order from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer; however, other services like the health center are closed.)
When her school decided to shift to online classes, which meant finding a public space to study and attend classes, she knew that wouldnt be possible in the shelter. She also knew that other public spaces would likely soon close to promote social distancing. She worried she may have to move back home with her father, who doesnt support her transition and doesnt use her name or correct pronouns.
My relationship with my parents is not good, particularly my dad, Alexis said. My parents in general are just not very accepting of me, but [being] trans is kinda like the straw that broke the camels back.
Alexis is one of thousands of LGBTQ college students dealing with campus closures; a 2016 survey of more than 33,000 college students found that 10 percent identified as LGBTQ. But many queer students dont have a safe or supportive place to go home to while campuses struggle to manage the ongoing pandemic. When state and local health officials outlined guidance about closing down spaces where large groups gather, universities across the country were among the first to act in order to try to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, the disease stemming from coronavirus.
My whole life revolves around university, and the university is closed
On March 6, the University of Washington was the first to shut its doors, moving entirely to online classes in a region hit early in the pandemic. Since then, most schools have followed suit. But the closings disproportionately affect LGBTQ students, who are less likely in general to have supportive places to go home to.
As a queer community, we have a long way to go. Oftentimes, for our youth, that means [they have] unfriendly places to go back home to from college because at college at least maybe theyve created a community, a group of friends, a support system, said Shane Windmeyer, founder and executive director of Campus Pride. But sometimes these situations or crises happen where students are asked to go home, and sometimes they dont have a home to go to.
The collective action by institutions of higher learning has triggered a panic among many queer students who have been forced to find alternative housing, medical providers, and even employment.
One of those students was Reed Cooper, a 20-year-old junior attending DePauw University, a private college in Greencastle, Indiana. Cooper lives in on-campus housing and depends on a work-study job for income while he attends school. But the universitys decision to close meant scrambling to find basic accommodations.
There had been rumors circulating between students that our university was going to cancel classes, but it kind of blindsided all of us, he said. Originally, DePauw gave students until March 20 to clear out, but a subsequent email last Friday informed students that they would need to vacate campus by Monday, March 16. It caught everyone off-guard. (Representatives from DePauw didnt return Voxs request for comment.)
I am lucky enough to have a support system in Indianapolis, but I rely on this institution for my therapy, for medical treatment, and my whole support system is on campus, he said. There are other trans people I know on campus that arent lucky enough to have people they can stay with, that have families that have either kicked them out or they have to go back to being in the closet when they get home.
At the same time, Cooper knows that closing campus was the right call to protect vulnerable people from Covid-19. I completely understand the need for taking us off campus because thereve been a lot of cases in the central Indiana area and they dont want to risk a student getting infected. I get that they want to slow the spread of a pandemic. That being said, our university specifically seems to have given no options for [students like us].
Different administrations have taken on different policies. Many schools have allowed international students and students with nowhere else to go to stay on campus. After initial vagueness when answering questions from a student reporter about housing for LGBTQ students, a spokesperson from Boston College, a Jesuit school in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, told Vox that they were able to accommodate all of the LGBTQ students who applied to stay on campus during the outbreak. Nearby Northeastern University in Boston announced last Wednesday that students could also stay on campus if they needed to.
Ultimately, the level of support parents offer their LGBTQ kids dictates the decision-making process for how LGBTQ students handle their campuses shutting down in the wake of the pandemic. While many students are able to find alternative housing, some are forced to go back into the closet in order to move home with their parents.
These situations or crises happen where students are asked to go home, and sometimes they dont have a home to go to
Such is the case for Cal, a 20-year-old gender nonbinary student attending the University of Utah. While Cals parents are not Mormon, they are conservative Christians, and Cal has never come out to them.
I dont think that theyve earned that from me, Cal told Vox. I have repeatedly, time and time again, heard them say things about the queer community in general that did not resound with their quote unconditional love. So that has discouraged me from being completely honest with them.
Before Utah transitioned to online-classes, Cal was living in off-campus housing. It was a very supportive situation, and they attended a support group for trans and nonbinary students on campus.
Cal now finds themself living in their childhood bedroom again, trying to finish out the school year online. Cal is also now unemployed, having lost their on-campus job as a barista and any progress toward becoming a certified lab assistant, which means they cant afford their off-campus housing. They had also planned on starting the application process for graduate school soon, but the shutdown has put those plans on hold as well.
Even with their life unraveling, they still think essentially shutting down the campus was the right call (a university spokesperson told Vox that the school has kept open its residence hall and dining services). Despite the fact that its kind of destroying my life right now, I think that it will be easier for me to recover than somebody who could get the disease and perhaps not survive from it.
In response to the pandemic and subsequent campus closings, some people have taken to offering their homes to LGBTQ students with nowhere else to go. In Washington, DC, locals organized a Google form to assist with housing students who cant remain in student housing at nearby American University.
Windmeyer said that even when universities are strained under emergency circumstances, theres often a queer community if not on, then around, campus thats ready and willing to help. I do think that in times of crisis that asking or making sure that you let people that you trust know your situation, many times through that openness and trust, people are able to come together and help each other, he said.
In other words, queer students are doing what theyve always done in times of crisis: turning to their communities for resources. Thats what Alexis ended up doing. She reached out to a local group offering direct support for students in need when Covid-19 cases first began popping up in Michigan. I was like, Oh, well Ill reach out to them and see what we can do. And they hooked me up with a person who is generous enough to let me stay here.
As millions of students see their lives turned upside-down by a global pandemic, queer and trans students are facing additional challenges. But theyre surviving through solidarity, a lesson that everyone will need to learn to overcome whats ahead.

Here’s what gyms are doing to help protect its members from the coronavirus – KENS5.com
Posted: at 10:41 am
Gyms across the country are taking precautions to sanitize the facilities in hopes to help prevent the potential spread of the coronavirus.
We did a digital deep-dive, searching for corporate gyms's statements on what they're doing to protect their members. Here's what we found:
LA Fitness: "We want to assure you that we are monitoring further advice from the CDC, that we have in-house staff scheduled daily to regularly clean and disinfect, we have sanitizing stations that include sanitizer for hands and for equipment, and we have ordered and currently await a shipment of additional sanitizers for use at the front desk of all our clubs.
We ask that you wipe down equipment before and after use. If we confirm that a person recently diagnosed with COVID-19 used our facilities while carrying the virus, we will perform additional cleaning of the facility and contact local health authorities. We are monitoring the situation very closely and will continue to follow the guidelines, instructions and recommendations of public health officials and the CDC."
Gold's Gym email to members: "Our gyms are currently open and our teams are hard at work maintaining a rigorous schedule of cleaning all equipment and surfaces with medical-grade solutions, in order to do everything in our power to ensure the health and safety of our Members and Team Members.
We want to do our part to help our Members continue to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle during the coming weeks. This means having the flexibility to workout wherever they are most comfortable, be it in or out of the gym. In order to support our Members in this endeavor, effective today, we are offering our GOLDS AMP digital personal training and fitness App to Golds Gym Members around the country to use for FREE until May 31, 2020*."
YMCA:"Our top priority is always the safety and well-being of our members and staff. We are committed to providing the safest possible environment for children and adults in our programs and services, and that includes taking the necessary steps to help prevent the spread of illness.
While no one can predict with certainty how severely COVID-19 will impact the United States and our local communities, we are monitoring the situation and preparing alternate plans if the condition worsens. We will keep everyone updated with information as it develops."
Life Time Fitness: "We are monitoring the evolving situation and following the guidelines of the CDC in all of our clubs and workspaces to keep our members and team members safe, and our spaces clean. This includes:
Planet Fitness email to members:"The health and wellness of our team and our members is our #1 priority. As part of our ongoing commitment to providing a clean, safe, and welcoming workout environment, we have extensive cleanliness policies and procedures in place to help protect against the spread of bacteria and germs.
Our team members conduct regular and thorough cleaning of all equipment, surfaces, and areas of the club and gym floor using disinfectant cleaning supplies. In addition, we regularly complete overnight deep cleaning of the facility."
Orangetheory Fitness response to members: "All Orangetheory staff have an aggressive program of keeping the studios clean and your health top of mind. We are redoubling our efforts to maintain our standards, for the safety of everyone.
We are closely monitoring updates from the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We will continue to seek guidance from these agencies and local public health officials. And, we maintain an open communication channel with all of our studio staff in order to make sure the latest updates get distributed quickly."
Many of the fitness centers listed also released statements on the importance of building your immune system, as well as tips you can follow to maintain good health. Life Time says:
Smoothie King is offering free Immune Support enhancer starting Tuesday. You need to use your Healthy Rewards app to unlock the reward at time of purchase.

Wilton restaurants and fitness centers adjust to new rules
WILTON From pizza to fine dining, Wilton restaurants will only be serving up takeout meals for the foreseeable future. And if youre looking to stay in shape, a local Pilates studio will be going online.
On Monday, Gov. Ned Lamont ordered the closing of all restaurants and bars in the state that serve food for eat-in customers.
Only take-out meals and food deliveries will be allowed, in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
Bars that do not serve food were ordered to close immediately, with no schedule for reopening in the health crisis. Movie theaters, gyms, fitness centers and studios were ordered to close by 8 p.m.
A number of Wilton restaurants are offering a variety of takeout meals.
Wilton Pizza is offering takeout and if anyone wants curbside service, they will accommodate them. They also deliver.
Under the circumstances, Im relieved they are doing that. Theyve got to limit the spread [of the virus] and if that works Im OK. Its been quiet. Its definitely had an impact, said manager Alfredo LoPresti.
Cactus Rose in Wilton River Park said it is closing today, Tuesday and Wednesday and reopening Thursday for curb service.
Red Rooster Pub, 10 Center Street, is offering takeout service but with a shortened menu, according to owner Tony Ramadani. The shortened menu features Italian dishes, pasta, chicken, pizza, and salad. The plan is to serve daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The hours could be adjusted in the future, Ramadani said.
Pinocchio Pizza, 1 Center Street, is offering its full menu for takeout, according to the owner, Frank Sadrija.
If you are in the mood for fine dining, The Schoolhouse at 34 Cannon Road, is offering a three-course takeout menu. Call 203-834-9816 for more information.
Bianco Rosso Wine Bar & Restaurant at 151 Old Ridgefield Road is closing for lunch, but will open at 4 p.m. for takeout. They are offering dinners for two, four or six people and are looking into the possibility of offering delivery service.
Tusk & Cup coffee shop at 142 Old Ridgefield Road will offer takeout service during regular business hours.
Not surprisingly, Wilton Restaurant Week which was scheduled for March 16 - March 22, offering diners fixed course meals, has been canceled.
We are canceling Restaurant Week but are encouraging the community to order takeout. Many of the restaurants are doing takeout, curbside pickup or delivery themselves or through a third party, said Camille Carriero of the Wilton Chamber of Commerce.
Area gyms were ordered to close.
I knew it was coming but Im very upset, not by the governors choice but upset it has come to this. I want to do whats best for the community and everybodys health, said Mary Beth Young, owner of The Pilates Advantage at 414 Olmstead Hill Road.
This is very stressful but of course Im happy to accommodate these steps for everyone. Im trying to pull together some online videos, I will get the instructors in the studio tomorrow and post them online, she said.
Information will be posted on her website explaining how people can access and pay for the videos.
My main message is, Im walking my walk of wellness and health by posting online so people can do some type of Pilates until we are back open and back to normal. Im a real advocate for health and wellness, she said.
Young said it's been stressful enough to run her own business and give 100 percent. With all of this Ive been spending money on sanitizers, wiping everything down 10 times more than normal, she said.
Anytime Fitness at 84 Danbury Road is also closed until further notice. Lets shut everything down and stay home. The sooner we do that and contain the virus, the sooner we can all re-open, said Cecelia Laskauskas, the gyms manager.
