We are delighted to announce the official launch of the Long Island Virtual Senior Center a new collaboration of the Selfhelp/Kimmel nonprofit partnership and a high tech innovation designed to help reduce the crippling emotional and physical effects of social isolation among homebound seniors.

We owe the Long Island VSCs speedy development to the tireless work of our Kimmel and Selfhelp team members, to a planning grant from the Long Island Community Foundation, a game-changing $100,000 grant from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, and additional critical support from the Manhasset Community Fund and Hofstra Universitys National Center for Suburban Studies. The UUCSR hosted our celebration which drew attendees from a wide range of community groups, elected officials, and our very own VSC participants who told the audience live on a giant screen, just what a difference the VSC has made in their lives.

LongIslandsvery first VSC participant, Jamy Kanas Santoro, wowed the crowd in person with an articulate and heartfelt description of what the VSC means to her. This has the potential to be a great, great thing, she explained. I think it will actually save lives! She also gave Howard Kimmel, Kimmels legendary founder, a personal demonstration of the VSC homepage and offered a rundown of her favorite classes.

WASHINGTON DC Jan 15, 2014 Leaders from Selfhelp Community Services, the nations largest provider of services to Holocaust survivors, revealed surprising and compelling testimony today before the Senate Special Committee on Aging, spotlighting the critical and escalating needs of the nations 120,000 Holocaust survivors.

The hearing, Aging in Comfort: Assessing the Special Needs of Americas Holocaust Survivors, comes at a time of increased attention to survivors. Vice President Biden recently announced a four-point White House initiative to aid survivors, which will include the appointment of a special envoy to enhance and expedite efforts to help survivors living in poverty. In addition many elected officials and advocates are supporting an amendment to the Older Americans Act (provision S.999) to provide care and services to aid Holocaust survivors who are dealing with the cumulative physical and emotional trauma that began decades ago.

Elihu Kover, VP Nazi Victim Services for Selfhelp, presents testimony to Senate Committee on Aging regarding the critical needs of the country's Holocaust survivors. Stuart C. Kaplan (left), Selfhelp CEO, also spoke with committee members and answered questions. The hearing was streamed live from the Senate's site for public viewing.

Holocaust survivors are growing older and frailer, Elihu Kover, VP Nazi Victim Services of Selfhelp Community Services, told the committee. Prolonged periods of starvation, exposure to severe weather conditions and experiencing and witnessing unspeakable atrocities take a severe toll on body and mind. Many of these problems only surface in old age, having been hidden during their working years when the survivors struggled and made a new life for themselves. While there are some younger survivors today who are in their late 60s, the vast majority of survivors are 80-100 years old, Mr. Kover noted.

Video of the complete hearing, and supplemental written materials are available at http://www.aging.senate.gov/hearings for Aging in Comfort: Assessing the Special Needs of Americas Holocaust Survivors. Self Help (The Walking Dead) – Wikipedia, the free …

Posted: at 3:45 pm

without comments

"Self Help" is the fifth episode of the fifth season of the post-apocalyptic horror television series The Walking Dead, which aired on AMC on November 9, 2014. The episode was written by Heather Bellson and Seth Hoffman, and directed by Ernest Dickerson. The episode centers on Abraham Ford, Eugene Porter, Rosita Espinosa, Tara Chambler, Glenn Rhee, and Maggie Greene, who have left the church and their fellow survivors to pursue a mission to Washington, D.C., by bus. Upon their journey, they encounter numerous problems, and Abraham's past and his keen desire to continue on the mission are explored throughout the narrative.

The episode received critical acclaim from commentators, many of whom singled out the emotional performance of Michael Cudlitz and the revelation at the end of the episode. This episode adapts material from Volume 12: Life Among Them from the comic book series of the same name.

Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz), Rosita Espinosa (Christian Serratos), Tara Chambler (Alanna Masterson), Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan), Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), and Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) are on their way to Washington, D.C. in the church bus. After passing a small group of walkers, a mechanical breakdown causes Abraham to lose control of the speeding bus and crash into wrecks on the road, turning the vehicle over. Alerted by the noise, the walkers move in.

With Abraham lightly concussed, Glenn organizes the group to fight their way out of the wreck, killing the walkers. A terrified Eugene watches and saves Tara's life as she is about to be bitten. The bus catches fire before the group can recover their supplies. Eugene suggests going back to the church, but an agitated Abraham demands that they must continue to Washington and Glenn backs him up after making sure Abraham is okay.

That night, the group make a fortified camp in a library, and Rosita stitches up a wound Abraham suffered in the crash. He later thanks Glenn for sticking with him after the crash and says he feels the apocalypse has reached a point where everyone still alive is very strong. Later, Eugene spies on Rosita and Abraham having sex. After Tara catches him and tells him to mind his own business, Eugene confides in her that he sabotaged the bus by putting crushed glass in the fuel line. He has no explanation, other than he wanted to stay at the church, though he does admit his fear of being abandoned once they reach Washington. A shocked Tara promises to keep his secret but makes him swear to never put the group in danger again.

The next morning, Rosita and Maggie suggest staying at the library for one more day to rest and gather more supplies, but Abraham is again persistent about getting to Washington. The group comes upon a fire truck which initially starts but quickly breaks down. As Abraham checks on the engine, the group inadvertently release a large group of walkers from the fire station. They are almost overwhelmed but Eugene is able to turn on a high-pressure hose atop the pumper truck which tears through the walkers' rotting bodies, leaving Abraham impressed.

Later, the fire truck breaks down in the middle of nowhere. Glenn notices the wind has picked up, carrying a foul odour with it, and looks over a rise to see a ranch overrun by an enormous herd of walkers. Everyone starts to turn around and head back, but Abraham once again insists they move forward. Rosita begs Abraham to come to his senses, but he grabs Eugene and heads toward the ranch. Glenn tries to stop the two, but Eugene suddenly yells out and confesses he has been lying all along: he is not a scientist and does not know how to save the world. As the group looks on in total shock, Eugene says he is only "smarter" than others and a very good liar, but he is also a coward, and felt that getting to Washington was his best chance at survival. Rosita is deeply hurt, lamenting that people died for him. Abraham beats Eugene, leaving him an unconscious, bloody mess. Abraham walks away, falls to his knees, and starts to cry.

In a series of flashbacks set shortly after the apocalypse began, Abraham kills a group of people in a grocery store. He calls out for Ellen, his wife, and he finds her hiding with their two children Becca and A.J. Abraham tells them they are safe, but the three are clearly terrified of him. The next morning, Abraham wakes up to find Ellen and the kids gone, with a note saying: "Don't try to find us". Abraham goes outside and finds them dead, all devoured by walkers. Abraham pulls out a .45 Kimber Custom pistol, preparing to kill himself, but he hears a screaming man being chased by three walkers. The man is revealed to be Eugene, and Abraham saves him. As Abraham walks away to kill himself as intended, Eugene quickly sizes him up, tells him he is on a very important mission to Washington, and requests his help, giving Abraham a new reason to live.

According to actor Michael Cudlitz via a Tweet, censors tried to ban this episode from airing. Though there were no specifics on what may have caused such a ban, word of it went viral.[1]

Upon airing, the episode was watched by 13.53 million American viewers with an 18-49 rating of 7.0,[2] a decrease in viewership from the previous week which had 14.518 million viewers and an 18-49 rating of 7.6.[3]

In the United Kingdom, the episode was viewed by 1.146 million viewers, making it the highest-rated broadcast that week. It also received 0.096 million timeshift viewers.[4] In Australia, it received 0.087 million viewers, making it the highest-rated cable broadcast that day.[5]

The episode was critically acclaimed, with many reviews highly praising the emotional performance by Michael Cudlitz in the episode.[6][7]

Zack Handlen of The A.V. Club gave the episode an A grade.[6]

Isabelle Khoo of The Huffington Post said regarding the flashbacks "While I was intrigued to find out more about this strong character, I felt a little disappointed by the flashbacks sprinkled throughout the episode. First of all, each of them were less than two minutes long, and second, the transitions were weirdly abrupt and sometimes confusing. Nonetheless, the flashbacks gave us a tease of Abrahams past."[8]

Matt Fowler of IGN gave the episode an 8.3 out of 10, saying the episode "gave Abraham and Eugene their first real character-building/revealing story since they came into the series last February. Eugene was using Abraham to survive and, despite the big betrayal, Abraham was using Eugene's lie to help facilitate his own subconscious denial. An inner pain that manifested itself physically through his own never-healing bloody hand."[7]

Self-Help Zen – Pragmatic Tips for Effective Living

Do you remember the people who criticise you?

Or you care aboutjust the criticism and take corrective measures if you think you can improve?

Its a Who Vs. What question.

Now think about this: if you remember the people who criticise you, your natural inclination will be to win over their hearts and do the things to please them.

When you do something to please someone, your act gets biased. Your such act willmake you stressful. Is such an act worth practicing? You know the answer.

But if you listen to just the criticism to understand the critics point of view, and if you are convinced, take corrective measures for improvement, the scenario changes.

When it comes to dealing with criticism, What matters more than Who.

Dont think of critics. Fix the act that caused criticism (or ignore it if you dont care).

Think of people you love your friends;yourfamily;your kids;your spouse (if you still love her, or him)

Thats much better use of the most scarce resource you have your remaining time in this world.

Some people live their lives thinking that they have unlimited time in this world. Thats not true.Your time is limited. Herere the 7 most common deathbed regrets. Not worth having for sure.

Do something that gives you happiness. Learn from the criticism but to hell with the critics. You better do it!

A coach saw five of the interns practicing software engineering. When they took a break, the coach asked the interns, Why do you write code?

The first intern replied, Coding is an in-demand, high paying career. Im glad that I will not have to do the clerical work that some of my school friends are doing in their jobs.

The coach praised the intern, saying, Youre a smart engineer. When you will gain more experience, you wont have to worry about coaching like I do.

The second intern replied, I love the constructs, structures and even more important, the business impact that my code would create.

The coach praised him, Your senses are active and you see more than many others. Good for your career.

The third intern replied, When I write the code, I feel so content that I am creating something useful for the people who would use the app.

The coach gave praise to the third intern, Your mind will easily grasp the programming techniques of today and future and make you a competent programmer.

The fourth intern answered, As I write the code, I create a systematic something that will make peoples lives better.

The coach was pleased and said, You are riding on the golden path which will offer you win-win and favorable situations in your life.

The fifth intern replied, I write code to write code.

The coach went and sat at the feet of the fifth intern and said, I am your student. Will you choose to be my coach?

Jack puts in a lot of time to learn the techniques.

Hes a technique-biased learner. If you access his Dropbox folder called To Learn, you will see notes like this:

Lots of how-tos

The problem with this approach is that they are good to read but dont always work as-is.

They need to be contextually modified to suit the specific needs.

Focusing merely on techniques is a great waste because it is not difficult to be good at a subject if we really choose to be.

We can be good at ANY subject if we choose to deal with an uncertain next and failures and frustration and the mess.

The problem is, we dont want to take ownership to be good at something unless we find out that it is possible to for us to be good at that thing.

We expect others to coach us to be good at something while we do other stuff like updating facebook status, playing mobile games, attending a friends sisters husbands uncles daughters neighbours birthday party or doing something else.

We want to be good at something while doing other stuff. Doing other stuff means our attention is divided and we are not 100% committed to be good at something.

What if we create a culture where the focus is on buying and selling ownership.

When we sell ownership, we have delegated a specific project or a task to a dependable person and that person has owned it.

Such a trade of ownership actually makes people choosing themselves.

A learner who chooses herself is unstoppable.

Sure, it takes some time to get used to the uncomfortable situations that the trade of ownership puts you in but once got, itworks as an extremely powerful tool.

Successful cultures practice trading of ownership. Successful individuals too.

What do you want to do?

When Simba, the Lion, didnt know that a circus was a possible home for him, his life was different.

He had so much freedom, many opportunities, and so much choice.

He was wired to lead. He was wired to roar.He was wired to kill.

Kill like a Lion.

Then came circus. And the ringmaster.

Initially, Simba didnt like the circusbut eventually he compromised and surrendered himself.

If he would do exactly as the ringmaster asked him to do, he would get a piece of meat.

If he would refuse to do as the ringmaster asked him to do, he will have to sleep hungry.

If hed do what the ringmaster wanted even without asking, he would get one more piece of meat.

Following the ringmasters orders was a better deal.

So he rewired himself to listen to and followthe ringmasters orders.

He was now an integral part of the circus.

His life became easy. Follow the orders and get the food. On some days, he would be allowed to have sex with the lioness who used to stay in a nearby cage.

Simba thought to himself, Life at circus is not bad at all. I get the food without having to kill anyone and I get to spend some good time with the lioness I developed a crush on.

As the years passed, Simba thought that the ringmaster was his true master and if he would please him, his life would continue to be easy.

Everything worked well for several years, but one day, for some reason, the circus owner decided to close the circus down.

The circus owner was happy with Simba. He thought at this point, rather than selling him to another circus, he would send him back to his real home, into the wild.

And he did it.

That day was difficult for Simba. There was no ringmaster. No shows. No noise of people applauding Simbas performance. There was no food at his fingertips.

Simba was hungry and he had to arrange for his food on his own.

But he didnt feel like home. The wild was perhaps too wild for him. He didnt want to stay there anymore. He needed to be with a circus. Any circus.

He sat under a tree thinking, It would be great if I find another circus. I want someone to come and take me to the circus again

He was the Lion. The King. Yet he needed a place to hold him, a spot where he didnt have to assume the responsibility.

If he would work with a circus, hed get food, sex and sense of safety.

Simba was no longer a Lion. His habits were changed. Sure, he looked like a Lion but didnt remain one. He could roar, but he could not choose.

Why wasnt he a Lion anymore? Did he forget hunting?

No.

But after living a passive life with the circus and after following orders from the ringmaster, he forgot to choose himself.

Simba hadnt read James Altuchers book Choose Yourself. Especially the page #4 which goes as below:

Thats when it clicked. When everything changed. When I realized that nobody else was going to do it for me. If I was going to thrive, to survive, I had to choose myself. In every way.

~James Altucher, Choose Yourself, pg #4

If you are a Lion, then you hunt. You dont ridicule yourself by following orders of the ringmasters.

If you are a programmer, then you program. You dont fool yourself by copy/pasting code from stakeoverflow.comand call yourself a Programmer.

Hunt every day. Program every day. Keep your reflexes sharpened. Read Choose Yourself from James Altucher today and be a real Lion who leads the wild, not just Simba.

Or go in search of a circus.

Unfortunately, a wide nasal cavity syndrome due to reduction or resection of the inferior turbinate (and/or middle turbinate) is still frequently seen. In our opinion, it is a nasal crime.

Source: Functional Reconstructive Nasal Surgery, by Egbert H. Huizing & John De Groot, 2003, page 286.

This site was founded by Empty Nose Syndrome (ENS) sufferers in 2005, and is a leading source of information about ENS on the Internet. The primary goal of this website is to act as a center of information for ENS sufferers in the hope that this information empowers them to cope better with this problem.

ENS, we believe, is one of the most misunderstood, devastating, iatrogenic problems in American medicine today. We encourage all visitors to visit our forum, to share information about your symptoms and surgery. We hope this site helps to shed light on this silent, preventable problem. Among other features, this site includes:

We warmly welcome and encourage your involvement; your grass-root efforts on behalf of ENS are strongly encouraged. Thank you for taking interest in our website. We hope you find the information you need and wish you happy browsing and good nasal health.

Self-help book – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A self-help book is one that is written with the intention to instruct its readers on solving personal problems. The books take their name from Self-Help, an 1859 best-seller by Samuel Smiles, but are also known and classified under "self-improvement", a term that is a modernized version of self-help. Self-help books moved from a niche position to being a postmodern cultural phenomenon in the late twentieth century.[1]

Informal guides to everyday behaviour might be said to have existed almost as long as writing itself. Certainly ancient Egyptian "Codes" of conduct 'have a curiously modern note: "you trail from street to street, smelling of beer...like a broken rudder, good for nothing....you have been found performing acrobatics on a wall!"'.[2] Indeed, 'some social observers have suggested that the Bible is really the first and most significant and most helpful of self-help books.[3]

In Western culture, a line of descent may be traced back from Samuel Smiles' Self-Help to when 'the Renaissance concern with self-fashioning produced a flood of educational and self-help materials':[4] thus 'the Florentine Giovanni della Casa in his book of manners published in 1558 suggests: "It is also an unpleasant habit to lift another person's wine or his food to your nose and smell it"'.[5] The Middle Ages saw the genre personified in ' Conduir-amour ("guide in love matters")';[6] while in classical Rome Cicero's "On Friendship" and "On Duties" became 'handbooks and guides...through the centuries'[7] - not to mention Ovid's "Art of Love" and "Remedy of Love". The former has been described as 'the best sex book, as valid for San Francisco and London as for ancient Rome', dealing as it does 'with practical problems of everyday life: where to go to meet girls, how to start a conversation with them, how to keep them interested, and...how to be sociable rather than athletic in bed';[8] the latter, equally essential, contains 'a series of instructions, as frank as they are ingenious and brilliantly expressed, on falling out of love'.[9]

It is however in the last half-century or so that the humble self-help book has jumped to cultural prominence, a fact admitted by both the advocates and the critics - often highly polarised - of the self-improvement genre. Some would 'view the buying of such books...as an exercise in self-education'.[10] Others, more critical, still concede that 'it is too prevalent and powerful a phenomenon to overlook, despite belonging to "pop" culture'.[11]

For better or worse, it is clear that self-help books have had 'a very important role in developing social concepts of disease in the twentieth century', and that they 'disseminate these concepts through the general public so that ordinary people acquire a language for describing some of the complex and ineffable features of emotional and behavioral life'.[12]

Where traditional psychology and psychotherapy will tend to be written in an impersonal, objective mode, many self-help books 'involve a first-person involvement and often a conversion experience':[13] in keeping with the self-help support groups on which they often draw, horizontal peer-support and validation is thus offered the reader, as well as advice "from above".

Yet arguably with the movement from the self-help group to the individual "self-improvement" reader something of that peer support has been lost, reflecting the broader way that 'over the course of the last three decades of the twentieth-century, there has been a significant shift in the meaning of "self-help"'.[14] A collective enterprise has become a refashioning of the individual self: 'in less than thirty years, "self-help" - once synonymous with mutual aid - has come to be understood...as a largely individual undertaking'.[15]

'What social theorists call "detraditionalization" - the tendency of advancing capitalism to disrupt the cultures and traditions that may stand in the way of the accumulation of profit'[16] has been seen as underpinning behind the self-help phenomenon in two (overlapping) ways. The first is the eclipse of the informal, communitarian transmission of folkways and folk wisdom: 'the charge that when self-help writers are being simplistic and repetitious, they are also being banal and unoriginal, merely offering their readers platitudes...on behalf of the best parts of folk wisdom',[17] may simply be because they are providing a formal conduit for the conveyance of such "home truths" in an increasingly unstructured and anomic world.

The other result of the loss of 'Weber's "traditional behavior...everyday action to which people have become habitually accustomed"'[18] is an increased social pressure for Self-fashioning: 'while one's identity might have been formerly anchored in (and limited by) a community...the self-creating self must create a written narrative of his or her life'.[19] self-help books 'written and read for the purpose of helping people build a personal philosophy'[20] contribute to that end.

The danger may arise however of an overestimation of the possibilities of change, given that 'we do not in any meaningful sense intend or choose our birth, our parents, our bodies, our language, our culture, our thoughts, our dreams, our desires, our death, and so on'.[21] In the PsyBlog-Understand Your Mind , Dr. Jeremy Dean states that "the dark side of hope is that claims about potential improvement can, and are, grossly exaggerated, in order to prise open our wallets. Similarly a bright and breezy approach to potential change may lead us to believe that changing ourselves is easy, when often it requires considerable, sometimes monumental, effort".[22] The 'Twelve-step "Traditions"...have fostered a notion of individual self-mastery or self-control as limited...use of the Serenity Prayer encourages individuals to accept what they cannot change, to find courage to change what they can change, and to seek wisdom in discerning the difference'.[23] Self-help books will indeed often acknowledge formally that 'this book does not replace the need for therapy and counselling for troubled relationships or survivors of a dysfunctional family'.[24] In practice however, fueled by competitive advertising, often 'such books hold out to the reader the promise of a virtually "instantaneous" transformation';[25] and there ensues something of a 'built-in contradiction of the celebratory arc of the self-help book combined with the stubborn realities'[26] of the human world.

The reader may go away disillusioned; or may seek for the answer in the next book, so that 'self-help books can become an addiction in and of themselves'[27] - a process that will 'have fostered the belabored self'[28] rather than relieving it. In that perspective, since all self-help books 'have at least one common message. They tell you that you have the power to change yourself....By implication all of these books are saying, if you are in pain, if you are stuck and can't seem to change, it's no one's fault but your own'.[29]

It is important to note that the popularity of self-help books may cause a placebo effect and thus appear to be an effective way to change an individual's way of thinking about their life and selves. This is because individuals will believe these books will change their lives like others have endorsed.

Self-help books often focus on popular psychology such as romantic relationships, or aspects of the mind and human behavior which believers in self-help feel can be controlled with effort. Self-help books typically advertise themselves as being able to increase self-awareness and performance, including satisfaction with one's life. They often say that they can help you achieve this more quickly than with conventional therapies. Many celebrities have marketed self-help books including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oprah Winfrey, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Fitzmaurice, Tony Robbins, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra and Cher.

Like most books, self-help books can be purchased both offline and online; 'between 1972 and 2000, the numbers of self-help books...increased from 1.1 percent to 2.4 percent of the total number of books in print'.[30]

Stephen Potter's "Upmanship" books are satirical takes on status-seeking under the cloak of sociableness - 'remember, that it is just on such occasions that an appearance of geniality is most important'[31] - cast in advice-book form. A few decades later, with the neoliberal turn, such advice - 'Remember the reality of self-interest'[32] - would be being seriously advocated in the self-help world: in bestsellers like Swim with the Sharks, all 'kinds of seemingly benign guile are encouraged', on the principle that 'status displays matter: just don't be suckered by them yourself'.[33]

Perhaps the best-known fictional embodiment of the world of the self-help book is Bridget Jones. Taking 'self-help books...[as] a new form of religion'[34] - 'a kind of secularised religion - a sort of moral values lite'[35] - she struggles to integrate its often conflicting instructions into a coherent whole. 'She must stop beating herself over the head with Women Who Love Too Much and instead think more towards Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus...see Richard's behaviour less as a sign that she is co-dependent and loving too much and more in the light of him being like a Martian rubber band'.[36] Even she, however, has the occasional crisis of faith, when she wonders: 'Maybe it helps if you've never read a self-help book in your life'.[37]

In the BookWorld Companion, it is suggested that 'those of you who have tired of the glitzy world of shopping and inappropriate boyfriends in Chicklit, a trip to Dubious Lifestyle Advice might be the next step. An hour in the hallowed halls of invented ills will leave you with at least ten problems you never knew you had, let alone existed'.[38]
