What makes a community age-friendly? The World Health Organization asked seniors around the world and they said an age-friendly community has pleasant, clean and secure public spaces. Seniors have accessible transportation. They can choose from a variety of affordable housing without having to move to a different community. They have employment and volunteer opportunities, and information and services tailored to their needs. And perhaps most importantly, they are respected and active participants in community life. Communities all over British Columbia are working to create those conditions. There are a lot of things that individuals and local governments and others can do and, as you will see from the successful activities in communities around the province, it doesn #39;t have to cost a lot. We hope these actions will inspire others involved in community development to make their own communities more age-friendly. Communities the world over are aging. Some may see this as a challenge, but many are embracing the opportunities that come from a healthy, active older population. After nearly two decades serving Ridgefielders, the owner of Dimitri #39;s Diner decided to open an authentic Greek eatery just a short walk away. "I have 18 years in Ridgefield. So, people, they trust me," said Dimitrios Paschalidis. The 72-year-old who has run 10 restaurants mdash; all diners mdash; decided he wanted a new challenge and to bring a bit of his native country to Ridgefield, so he opened Gyro on Pita at 91 Danbury Road. "It #39;s authentic Greek specialities," he said. "For that reason I brought special chef from Greece." Unlike a diner, which has a diverse menu, Gyro in Pita has trimmed down offerings. The chicken, pork, lamb and beef roasted on site. What makes an authentic gyro? "First of all it is fresh meat and quality meat," Mr. Paschalidis said. Also, "it #39;s the way it #39;s cooked." Gyro meat is roasted on a vertical spit. "You don #39;t see this in Connecticut. You can go in New York, but in Connecticut you don #39;t see this." After 10 diners and many decades in the business, Mr. Paschalidis said it wasn #39;t a walk in the park starting Gyro on Pita, but it was able to be opened in an astonishingly speedy two and a half months, in part because of a speedy interior renovation. Around 15000 investors from the Christian community were duped in an investment scheme that promised a tour to Israel for six days, investment for a divine tower, schools and hospitals for the poor. The scheme was a perfect narrative to lure investors in the name of religion.
