CMU encourages students to participate in survey on engagement, learning

Central Michigan University freshmen and seniors are invited to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement.

NSSE, founded by Indiana University, collects information about student participation, learning and personal development to provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.

On Feb. 1, Provost Gary Shapiro emailed students asking them to complete the survey, which covers five National Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice; level of academic challenge, active and collaborative learning, student-faculty interactions, enriching educational experiences and supportive campus environment.

Each benchmark measures student engagement and its importance to student learning, collegiate quality and institutional improvement.

OIR Senior Research Associate Ahmed Elgammal is working to raise awareness of the survey and its significance around campus.

“More than 640 institutions nationwide are participating in the survey,” Elgammal said. “Some Canadian institutions and American universities overseas are taking part too.”

He has helped spread advertising around campus, spoke to resident assistants and will continue to remind students of the survey through email.

So far, about 1,000 CMU students have taken the survey, Elgammal said. But CMU wants to see more students respond.

“It’s very important to get students’ feedback and engagement,” Elgammal said. “It helps increase the student-learning experience.”

Students who complete the survey by March 21 will be entered into a drawing for more than 100 prize,s including items such as an iPad 2 or a CMU Bookstore gift card.

In 2009, about 1.1 million students from 640 institutions in the U.S. and Canada were invited to participate in the survey. Of that number, 367,318 students responded. This year NSSE hopes more students get involved.

The survey closes in May.

NZ heptathlete's shot best boosts Olympic hopes

TONY SMITH

A personal best in the shot put has helped bolster Canterbury athletics star Rebecca Wardell's hopes of qualifying for the London Olympic Games heptathlon.

Wardell withdrew from track events at the International Track Meet in Christchurch on Saturday after "pulling up a bit sore" from a run last Monday. The Beijing Olympian is on the comeback trail after foot surgery so did not want to take any risks.

But Wardell was able to focus on the shot put and was rewarded with a 15.08m throw on her first attempt to better her former personal best of 14.74m.

Wardell, who has been training in Dunedin since QEII Stadium was destroyed in the February 22 earthquake, wasn't entirely surprised at her performance.

"I threw a couple out to 14.70 on Tuesday [at training] and my best was 14.74, so I knew I was in personal best shape. I reckon I've got another 50 to 60cm in there."

Wardell said she plans to complete her first heptathlon in Melbourne within the next month and she is confident there is plenty of time to qualify for London.

Meanwhile, one of Canterbury's most versatile athletes – champion hurdler and New Zealand Black Sticks hockey development squad member Fiona Morrison – did the women's 100m and 200m double.

Canterbury's Andrew Davidson had his moment of glory, finishing third in the men's two-mile handicap. He had a good head-start on top placegetters Will Leer and Nick Willis, but captured the hearts of the crowd with a strong finishing spurt to challenge them both and finish third.

Davidson told the crowd later he thought he would make the most of the opportunity to race the stars because "I will never get a chance to sprint with Nick" again. The Brian Taylor Memorial women's 3000m race – named in honour of the respected coach and official who was killed in last February's earthquake – was won by Canterbury University's Kellie Palmer, from NZ cross-country representative Hannah Newbould.

A new online interview with John Spencer Ellis and Erik Rokeach focuses on giving good media interviews in the fitness business. It also discusses exposure, building a brand and taking advantage of media opportunities.

Rancho Santa Margarita, CA (PRWEB) February 05, 2012

Media exposure for a fitness business can enhance reputation, increase business and provide free advertising for personal trainers and fitness business owners. According to fitness business expert John Spencer Ellis, the key is gaining exposure first and then using that opportunity to focus on the positive in the fitness industry.

In a new online interview, John Spencer Ellis, the founder of John Spencer Ellis Enterprises, a fitness and personal development solutions company, talks with fitness media interview expert Erik Rokeach about how to make the most of every media and interview opportunity for those in the fitness and personal training business.

In the free online video, Ellis and Rokeach talk about ways to get more media opportunities that can be used to grow a fitness business and brand as well as things to avoid in interviews. The duo also encourages personal trainers, coaches and other fitness pros to be willing to take chances and to not be so afraid of failure.

“Gaining media exposure for your coaching, fitness, personal training or wellness business is a great opportunity, but you must do it right!” said Ellis. “We get a lot of requests about successful media outreach in the fitness industry, so Erik and I wanted to put together this how-to guide to getting media interviews and then successfully growing your business with them.”

In particular, Rokeach and Ellis discuss the necessity of having a unique hook or angle for the media interview, the importance of cadence and tone for TV or Internet interviews, authenticity and energy, making a few key points, strategic pauses, modeling, pacing and timing, and much more.

“Everybody’s got something to share or to teach,” Rokeach added, while also encouraging a focus on connection and modeling the person who’s interviewing to build overall rapport.

Rummer attends symposium in Monterey

Sierra Sands Unified School District Superintendent Joanna Rummer joined superintendents around California in Monterey Thursday and Friday for a symposium.
“The superintendent’s symposium is a conference designed to address the professional development and personal development and needs of superintendents,” she said. “It basically covers current trends — what’s happening in education — the politics surrounding those specific things.”
Rummer said State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson addressed the symposium about his Educator Excellence Task Force.
“I agree with his statement that teaching is the mostimportant job there is, and it’s time to treat teachers with the dignity as professionals that they are,” Rummer said. “I totally agree with that.”
She said she is glad Torlakson made those statements.
“What I hope is that through this program teachers who are involved in it come out feeling supported and have a renewed strength and inspiration for having participated,” Rummer said. “They really do a wonderful job. They’re educating the future of our country. I’m glad he made those statements, and hopefully this program will promote that.”

UNL researchers correlate personality traits with personal development

Posted: February 2, 2012 at 3:36 pm

without comments

Anyone who had an imaginary friend as a kid knows what it's like to invent personalities for people who don't exist. Usually, this activity is outgrown, but University of Nebraska-Lincoln researchers Peter Harms and Fred Luthans have brought it back to a number of adults. A recent study co-authored by the two shows that the way people imagine others reflects their own personalities.

To test this hypothesis, the two applied a concept known as "psychological capital," a theory developed by Luthans ten years ago and used in a number of UNL studies, to the participants.

The theory of psychological capital targets personality characteristics or concepts that make individuals more prone to positive growth and direction, especially in the workplace.

The measurement of psychological capital consists of four components: hope, efficacy, resiliency and optimism, otherwise known as "HERO."

According to Luthans, these concepts were decided upon as important characteristics to have because they contribute to theory and research and are open to development. They are separate from a person's personality in that they can continue to be developed as an individual matures, whereas other characteristics are fully developed by adulthood, Luthans said.

Psychological capital has been successfully used in military, industry and education, according to Harms, although he said this is his first involvement on a project using the concept.

Luthans also said that having the HERO concepts contributes to a strong and desirable work ethic.

"It's about the hero in us," he said.

To test each individual's measure of these concepts, Harms and Luthans presented each participant with hypothetical situations and asked them to report on how a co-worker would react to each one.

Luthans estimated that between three and four hundred people were involved, reportedly from a range of career fields.

The researchers had them imagine how a co-worker would respond to three stimuli: a new job, a supervisor wanting to speak with him or her and making a mistake at work.

"By imagining others they revealed who they are," Luthans said.

According to Luthans, these tests were a simpler form of projective personality tests, a tool used in psychology for years in which a participant sees a picture and tells a story about it.

Harms said this was an effective way of measuring the way respondents view others. He said that if asked outright, many people who view others negatively have the tendency to respond positively as a means of maintaining relationships with others. Using the hypothetical situations takes away this bias, he said, because it targets people's unconscious perceptions of others.

The situations revealed the basic level of positivity of each respondent and were about "taking positive psychology to the workplace and realizing what's positive with people, not what's negative," Luthans said.

The study will be published in an upcoming edition of the Journal of Organizational Behavior.

"I think (this study) could be very useful for developing self-awareness," Harms said.

Luthans agreed. "It's really having an impact."
