Organic food company recalls products

Story highlights Amy's Kitchen says a supplier reported that organic spinach could contain listeria The food company says it is voluntarily recalling nearly 74,000 cases of products The recall, the company says, is "out of an abundance of caution"

In a statement released through the Food and Drug Administration on Sunday, Amy's Kitchen said that it was voluntarily recalling the products after learning from one of its suppliers that it may have received organic spinach that was possibly contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

The California-based organic and natural food company said it wasn't aware of any reports of illness connected with its products, but was recalling them "out of an abundance of caution."

The recalled products, which are listed on the FDA's website and were distributed throughout the United States and Canada, include multiple types of vegetable lasagna, tofu scrambles, spinach pizza, enchiladas, brown rice and vegetable bowls and stuffed pasta shells.

Listeriosis, a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with listeria, primarily affects the elderly, pregnant women, newborns and people with weakened immune systems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In the United States, an estimated 1,600 people become seriously ill each year; approximately 16% of these illnesses result in death. Cervical infections caused by listeriosis in pregnant women may result in spontaneous abortion during the second or third trimesters or stillbirth.

CNN's Jacque Wilson contributed to this report.

“Just Because It’s Organic Doesn’t Mean It Tastes Good”

Posted: at 9:50 am

If you can't lick them, buy them -- and build them up.

That's how giant food makers are responding to competitors specializing in "natural" and organic food. They're acquiring them. General Mills now owns Annie's; Campbell's Soup, Plum; Coca-Cola, Honest Tea; Kellogg, Kashi.

As the big food companies go natural and organic, the market evolves. The giants are introducing new products aimed at a wider audience. What was once a small, boutique business is becoming bigger and more segmented, with offerings for a variety of tastes.

For a glimpse of these changes, check out this intriguing Wall Street Journal story, "Does Organic Food Taste as Virtuous If It Goes Mass Market?" (http://tiny.cc/). The story describes:

--Honest Tea learning, while a unit of Coke, that it can attract a broader clientele by adding sugar to its beverages, even as its sugar-free green tea continues to sell best at stores like Whole Foods;

--Plum, armed with Campbell's research on consumer tastes in soup, cutting up the kale and spinach finer to avoid scaring kids away;

--Kashi coming under social-media attack for using genetically engineered ingredients and promising, after losing $200 million in sales over five years, to get rid of them;

--Annie's discovering that it can't sell an organic frozen pizza for $9 but can sell frozen mini pizza bagels and poppers for $4 a box;

--A mother in Phoenix being taught by her three-year-old that "Just because it says organic doesn't mean it tastes good."

Amid all the changes, the article hints, some things never change. Taste and price will always rank high in what the public expects of food. And big business will always think big. When Honest Tea presented its growth plans to Coke last year, the response was: "Great. How do we double or triple this?"

Amys Kitchen, a best-selling natural and organic food brand, announced a voluntary recall today of more than 73,000 cases of its products over worries of possible listeria contamination, the company said in a statement today.

This recall is based on a recall notice from one of Amy's organic spinach suppliers that Amy's may have received organic spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the company said is a statement to ABC News, also noting that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration did not ask for the recall but was aware of it.

Listeria is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, said Kirsten Larson, manager of the food safety program for the Association of Public Health Laboratories. Symptoms include high fever, headache and abdominal distress, she said.

The Listeria bacteria is responsible for more than 1,600 illness and 260 deaths each year in the U.S., according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Infection can also cause miscarriage and still births among pregnant women.

"The riskiest foods for infection include deli meats, unpasteurized dairy products, produce and prepared foods," Larson said.

Fabindia plans to sell organic produce online

The author has posted comments on this articleJohn Sarkar, TNN | Mar 23, 2015, 06.06AM IST NEW DELHI: You may soon be able to buy organic fruits and vegetables at the price of regular produce or even less. Ethnic lifestyle retailer Fabindia, known for its apparel and furniture, is now preparing to sell organic fruits and vegetables online. Plans are afoot to establish a supply chain that can deliver fresh produce directly from farmers to households by cutting off middlemen.

A study commissioned by Fabindia shows that by the time some items such as chilies and cauliflowers arrive at markets in Delhi, their prices go up by around 100% or more. For instance, a kilogram of carrots that a farmer sells for around Rs 27 is marked up to Rs 60 at Azadpur Sabzi Mandi and Rs 80 when it finally reaches INA Market in Delhi.

Fabindia MD William Bissell said there is a growing concern among the Indian middle-class about food contamination. "There is no control over water contamination, excessive use of herbicide and the way vegetables are processed. I have seen bananas being ripened with gas. Organic farming provides an opportunity to reduce food arbitrage by around 30% or more," he said.

In 2013, Fabindia had acquired a 40% stake in Organic India, a Lucknow-based organic food and supplements firm and the maker of Tulsi Tea.

Rural Weld County finds booming business in organic grains

Posted: March 21, 2015 at 10:54 am

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) Were it not for the grain silos, Hereford might flash across the rear view mirror, passing entirely unnoticed by most traveling motorists.

The unincorporated Weld County community sits just 2 miles south of the Wyoming state line on the northern edge of the Pawnee National Grassland. To find its exact location takes some planning Hereford is not listed on the map, nor are its neighboring farm communities.

Rebecca Talmadge, co-owner of S T Organics, estimates between 15 and 20 people call her community home.

The grain silos that mark the town's skyline belong to Talmadge and her family.

While Hereford may appear sleepy to the naked eye, its grain elevator has a far-reaching impact on the organic food market both locally and nationally.

Organic grain farmers turn to Talmadge's elevator to store their wheat, barley, oats and corn harvested in northern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming and western Nebraska. Much of this grain will eventually land on grocery store shelves, providing flour for organic breads and feed for organically produced milk.

When S T Organics took over the community's grain elevator in 2007, the Talmadges found that while many producers in the area were already farming organically, they struggled to find storage options and get certified.

The company now provides a once-elusive resource for area farmers to both store their grain and submit consultations on getting organic certification.

"The ones that didn't have storage options, they basically didn't certify organic, even though they were farming organically anyway. They just didn't do the paperwork and sold it on the conventional market," Talmadge said. "So they were losing financially because of the differences in the commodity prices."

While an organic farmer cannot guarantee notably higher prices every season, organic grains typically yield a higher market price than their conventional counterparts.
