Democrats believe abortion will motivate voters in 2024. Will it be enough? – Sentinel Colorado – Sentinel Colorado

WASHINGTON | When Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said recently that he was proud to have a hand in overturning the abortion protections enshrined in Roe v. Wade, Democratic pollster Celinda Lake took it as a political gift, thinking to herself, Oh my God, we just won the election.

It may not be that simple, but as the 2024 race heats up, President Joe Bidens campaign is betting big on abortion rights as a major driver for Democrats in the election. Republicans are still trying to figure out how to talk about the issue, if at all, and avoid a political backlash.

A vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris is a vote to restore Roe, and a vote for Donald Trump is a vote to ban abortion across the country, said Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Bidens campaign manager. These are the stakes in 2024.

Since Roe was overturned in 2022, voters have pushed back by approving a number of statewide ballot initiatives to preserve or expand the right to abortion. Support for abortion rights drove women to the polls during the 2022 midterm elections, delivering Democrats unexpected success. For many people, the issue took on higher meaning, part of an overarching concern about the future of democracy, according to AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 94,000 voters in the midterm elections.

Democrats have since worked to broaden how they talk to voters about the Supreme Courts decision, delivered by a conservative majority that included three justices nominated by Trump, and what it means for peoples access to health care and their personal freedoms.

The Biden campaign is launching a nationwide political push this coming week centered on Mondays 51st anniversary of the 1973 decision that codified abortion rights. Vice President Kamala Harris, the administrations chief messenger on this, will hold the first event Monday in Wisconsin.

On Tuesday, Biden, Harris, first lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff head to Virginia for a campaign stop focused on the issue. More events featuring top Democrats in battleground states are also in the works.

The campaign on Sunday released a advertising campaign scheduled to run all week, including during The Bachelor season premiere and the NFL conference championships. The spot features Dr. Austin Dennard, an OB-GYN in Texas who had to leave her state to get an abortion when she learned that her baby had a fatal condition called anencephaly.

In Texas, you are forced to carry that pregnancy, and that is because of Donald Trump overturning Roe v. Wade, she said.

Focusing on abortion will not be a silver bullet for Democrats. The economy, foreign policy, immigration and inflation are major issues, too, as is concern about Bidens age as he tries to overcome low poll numbers. Many voters are simply turned off by the prospect of a likely 2024 Trump-Biden rematch.

Still, Democrats believe abortion will be a key motivator for base voters and help expand their coalition. Biden aides and allies point to recent elections that have overwhelmingly shown that, when voters can choose, they have chosen to safeguard abortion rights.

The issue isnt vanishing from the headlines anytime soon, either. The Supreme Court will decide whether to restrict access to medication prescribed for abortion and to treat other reproductive issues. And there is an ongoing stream of stories about the impact of abortion bans, such as the mother who had to sue, then flee, her home state to end her doomed pregnancy.

Democrats spent decades trying to calibrate their message, always defending the right to choose while also making overtures to voters who are conflicted about the issue. President Bill Clintons mantra was that abortion should be safe, legal and rare.

But the loss of federal abortion protections has been a catalyst for a broader and bolder message about abortion and reproductive rights after the historic setback from the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization that overturned Roe.

We know that if we talk about this issue as a fundamental freedom, we are able to resonate across demographics older voters, younger voters, people of color, folks in rural areas, said Mini Timmaraju, head of Reproductive Freedom for All, formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America.

Biden aides said the strategy is to let the president be who he is an 81-year-old Catholic man who doesnt use the word abortion much, preferring to talk instead about the issue in the context of personal freedom.

The White House often frames the fight as part of a larger battle that involves book bans, voting rights and other social issues. For more aggressive talk about abortion and how the ripple effects of the decision are affecting maternal health, theres Harris.

Timmaraju said those different messages resonate with different parts of the electorate.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Democrat and vocal advocate for abortion rights, said it would be good if Biden spoke more forcefully on the topic.

I think people want to know that this is a president that is fighting, Whitmer told CBS Face the Nation on Sunday. To use maybe more blunt language, maybe that would be helpful.

Since the high court overturned Roe, roughly 25 million women now live in states with some type of ban in effect. The impacts are increasingly felt by women who never intended to end their pregnancies, yet have had emergency medical care denied or delayed because of the new restrictions.

According to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll, among Democrats, nearly nine in 10 say abortion should generally be legal. Four in 10 say it should be legal in all cases, and nearly half say it should be legal in most cases.

As for Republicans, the topic was largely absent in the lead-up to this years Iowa caucuses, a remarkable change in a state that has long backed religious conservatives vowing to restrict the procedure. Part of the change is because Republicans achieved a generational goal with the overturning of Roe. But it also underscores a fear among Republican candidates and voters alike that vocalizing their desire to further restrict abortion rights might be politically dangerous.

I am calling the time period we are in now the new fight for life,' said Benjamin Watson, a former NFL player who is now an anti-abortion advocate. Roe is done, but we still live in a culture that knows not how to care for life. Roe is done, but the factors that drive women to seek abortions are ever apparent and ever increasing.

Overall, opinions on abortion remain complex, with most people believing it should be allowed in some circumstances and not in others. About two-thirds of U.S. adults say abortion should generally be legal, but only about one-quarter say it should always be legal and only about 1 in 10 say it should always be illegal.

Trump has waffled on the topic. During a recent Fox News town hall, he expressed support for limited exceptions and criticized state laws that ban abortion after six weeks. But he also has promoted his own role.

For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it and Im proud to have done it, he said.

The Biden administration is nearing the limits of what it can do to preserve access to abortion absent congressional legislation. In the immediate aftermath June 24, 2022 Supreme Court decision, the administration quickly tried to flex its regulatory muscle to fight back against Republican efforts to severely restrict abortion. Many efforts have been challenged in court.

Biden had invited states with robust abortion access to apply for Medicaid waivers that would help pay for women to travel for the care. But so far, only California has applied to unlock federal money for the effort.

The top U.S. health official, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, is on a three-day East Coast tour to talk with doctors and medical students about access to abortion and birth control.

This is the beginning of an effort to reach out to all Americans, Becerra said, and say to the American people how important it is that we stand up at a crucial time.

Associated Press writers Alanna Durkin Richer in Boston and Amanda Seitz and Linley Sanders contributed to this report.

Motivation to sell rising in 2024 – Property Reporter

"House prices have held firm despite the turbulence of last year and now were seeing a release of pent-up demand as buyer confidence has grown with interest rates being held recently. Mortgage lenders have already reacted accordingly with rate reductions" - Guy Gittins - Foxtons

Foxtons surveyed 1,002 UK home sellers on their priorities for the new year and their motivation levels about selling up revealing that, for 50%, the sale of their home was their primary focus.

The research also found that while 38% of home sellers admitted to having put off their plans to move, 73% are now more motivated to do so in 2024, with the search for their onward purchase topping their to-do list.

Weight loss was the second biggest priority for 9%, with more exercise (8%), more travelling (8%) and accumulating a savings pot (6%) also ranking within the top five priorities for the new year.

Foxtons also asked what the top priority for 2024 was specifically about the sale of their home.

18% of home sellers stated the search for their onward purchase was their key focus, 16% plan to start packing in anticipation of their move, 14% plan to organise their finances and one in 10 intend to make home improvements to boost the appeal of their property.

For those looking to sell, 2024 is a great time to do so. Just this month, the latest Bank of England data revealed that mortgage approvals climbed for the second consecutive month as buyers return to the market following a hold on interest rates and were already seeing mortgage lenders react accordingly with rate reductions.

Whats more, house prices are once again starting to climb, with the latest figures from Halifax showing a third consecutive month of positive growth and the first annual increase seen since April 2023.

Last year, Rightmove revealed that the number of buyers enquiring with agents soared by 250% between Christmas and Boxing Day. This seasonal spike in buyer interest is already helping to boost the market in 2024, with Foxtons seeing a 46% annual increase in the number of sales applicant enquiries over the last month and a 36% jump in the number of viewings being booked during the same period.

Foxtons CEO, Guy Gittins, commented: Theres certainly a renewed sense of vigour about the property market in 2024 and its been a very busy start to the year with regards to sales applicant enquiries and viewings activity.

"In fact, its probably the most balanced market weve seen in a long time and this means an abundance of opportunity for proactive buyers and sellers.

"House prices have held firm despite the turbulence of last year and now were seeing a release of pent-up demand as buyer confidence has grown with interest rates being held recently. Mortgage lenders have already reacted accordingly with rate reductions.

"Currently there are multiple 5-year fixed rate mortgages available at 3.9%, with some even lower, so we see a positive market ahead for anyone looking to secure a competitive rate, which will only help boost buyer sentiment further.

"So if you are planning to sell this year and youre done with dithering, our advice is to hit the ground running, as it certainly wont help to see January out sitting on the sofa.

Scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry measured the pupillary reaction of participants while they were solving a task. In healthy participants, the pupils dilated during the task in anticipation of a reward, but this reaction was less pronounced in participants with depression: "The reduced pupil reaction was particularly noticeable in patients who could no longer feel pleasure and reported a loss of energy," says Andy Brendler, first author of the study.

The feeling of listlessness is one of the most common symptoms of depression. "This finding helps us to better understand the physiological mechanisms behind listlessness," explains research group leader Victor Spoormaker. Amongst other things, the pupillary reaction is a marker for activity in the locus coeruleus, the brain structure with the highest concentration of noradrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.

Noradrenergic neurons react to the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, an important component in the stress response and the upregulation of arousal, in other words the activation of the nervous system. "The reduced pupillary response in patients with more listlessness indicates that the lacking activation of the locus coeruleus is an important physiological process that underlies the feeling of listlessness," says Spoormaker.

The study also found the pupil response to be weaker the more depressive symptoms participants had. This replicates the findings of a previous study by the same research group. The replicability of neuropsychiatric methods is more the exception than the rule, and demonstrates the reliability of pupillometry as a method.

Pupillometry could be used as a supplementary method for diagnosis. It could also contribute to the development of individualized treatment strategies for depression. For example, if a patient shows a significantly reduced pupil response, antidepressants that act on the noradrenergic system could be more effective than other medications. The medication dosage could also be optimized based on the pupil reaction. Considering that an estimated 30 percent of depressive patients do not improve using the currently available medication. Understanding the physiological mechanisms behind depression and fine-tuning diagnosis and treatment accordingly is urgently required.

Being guided by the deeper values-based journey. – Psychology Today

As I sit here writing this article while gently nursing a hairline fracture in my elbowa memento from a misadventure on a long hike in Death ValleyIm compelled by life itself to reflect on the nature of New Years resolutions and the fabric of self-improvement.

At 75, the injury has provided a sharp interruption to my year-long commitment to physical betterment, encapsulating rigorous exercise and conscientious changes in nutrition. My arm in a sling, with strict instructions not to engage in the most minimal weight training, I can feel my upper-body strength slide away almost day by day.

It is time for me to practice what I've long preached. Tomorrow, my orthopedic physician will determine if my arm requires further rest, but today, I write to you about reconceptualizing New Year's resolutions for a more self-managed lifestyle.

Traditionally, the turn of the year incites a chorus of SMART goalsthose that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Yet, my experience and scientific inquiry into self-management suggest that these SMART resolutions glide along the surface of an ocean of change; it is the deep current of personal values that fosters real transformation.

Several years ago, we juxtaposed the SMART methodology with values-focused writing among university students.1 We discovered that SMART goals alone added minimal improvements to academic outcomes, but their integration with a values-based vision led to a significant improvement in students' grade point averages in the semesters that followed.

The message was clear: We need to embed our specific aspirations into a larger tapestry of our chosen life purposes. Meaning was at the core of real change.

Adversity, like the unexpected offering of a pie when you have just resolved to rein in your dietary excesses, often disrupts our neatly laid plans. In such moments, a resolution anchored solely in the topography of change is extremely vulnerable. A single violation can turn our minds into torment about how we will never get it right and we can never change. But when our goals are an expression of the intrinsic qualities we wish to embody in being and doingthey are resilient parts of a larger, values-based journey.

As you consider your recent New Year's resolution, or any other goals you intend to set soon, I encourage you to ponder the greater voyage you aspire to embark on this year. What are the qualities of your being that you wish to cultivate? How does your behavior reflect your deepest values? As you gain clarity about the journey you choose, write these qualities down, commit to them, and let them be the compass for your actions.

As I anticipate my appointment with my physician, I am keen to return to the gym, not merely to regain strength but to continue exploring the possibilities that lie within an "old man" and his values. The journey, after all, is what truly matters.

As we continue to move into this next year, dont allow your resolutions to be a soon-discarded checklist of actions but let it be a reflection of the profound journey you are on. For it is in the journey that we find growth, resilience, and the true joy of living.

Marco Silva has revealed last seasons embarrassing Carabao Cup exit to Crawley has spurred Fulham onto the semi-finals this year.

The Cottagers host Liverpool on Wednesday night trailing 2-1 on aggregate as they aim to reach a first major domestic cup final since 1975.

Silvas side led at Anfield in the first leg before conceding twice in three minutes to find themselves as outsiders to down Liverpool and reach Wembley.

The journey is a far cry from their 2-0 loss to Crawley in the second round last August, where Silva made 10 changes from their previous Premier League game.

My ambition is to always play cup competitions and go further, Silva said on the eve of the tie.

Last season we were promoted and we played in the quarter-final of the FA Cup and our aim was always to go further of course its important to recognise that the Premier League was the main thing.

But at the same time, when we played the other competitions we were trying to be strong enough the first game in the Carabao was really poor last season.

It was a good moment to speak with the players about what I demand from them and what we demand from any competitions that you play in the future.

Silva has taken charge of 229 games in England across spells at Hull, Watford, Everton and Fulham.

The 46-year-old also reached the Greek Cup final with Olympiacos in 2016, having won the Taca de Portugal with Sporting the season before.

But he admits the visit of Liverpool and the potential for a first-ever game as a manager at Wembley means Wednesday is one of the biggest nights of his managerial career in England.

It is one of them, yes, he replied. I did play a (League Cup) semi-final with Hull City as well against Manchester United but, if you ask me right now, I would prefer to have another more important one in one months time or two months time.
