Staying in shape: How Belmont athletes are finding motivation without a season to win – Belmont Vision

After so many season delays and cancelations, many student-athletes might throw in the towel but thats not the case for Belmonts fall sports teams.

On Aug. 13, the Southern Conference Council of Presidents announced their decision to postpone fall sports until Spring of 2021. The next day, the Ohio Valley Conference Board of Presidents did the same.

And without competition, it became uncertain what the fall athletic programs would do with their extended off-seasons but head mens soccer coach David Costa viewed the new situation as an opportunity.

Instead of being in this competing phase that we would be in right now, we need to pivot our mentality and our players mentality that this is all about learning and developing for the next six months, said Costa.

Weve never had this much time to prepare our team, so we need to take advantage of that.

Taking advantage of this time is crucial, as the key to good play is a sense of purpose, said Costa.

We are excited to be back on the field, back on campus, and I believe that if you have purpose, you can stay motivated.

Veteran head womens soccer coach Heather Henson echoed sentiments, adding that a sense of community is necessary, too.

What keeps our team motivated is the desire to want to be together, its that simple, Henson said.

We are going to trust each other and trust the process. Go day by day, and get stronger and strongerphysically, mentally, as well as technically and tacticallyAnd thats gonna make our family stronger, thus whatever is thrown as us, we know that were stronger together.

Though last years conference title left the team excited for a follow-up season, Henson said the additional time may actually be more positive than negative.

Theres a lot of this is good moments that actually blend the pandemic world and our sport world together to help us. What is good for us is we get to take a little bit more time, said Henson.

In 2019, Henson produced an OVC champion with only 10 days to prepare. With this delay, she has six months.

To add, volleyball player Mary Catherine Ball was initially disappointed in the OVCs decision but now she has the extra time to focus on her mentality, she said.

My personal goal for this upcoming season is to work on my mental game. Volleyball is a mental sport where you have to balance pressure, risk, and momentum. If you are not in a good emotional/mental state, it is going to affect your performance drastically, said Ball.

My goal for the team is to find our flow and rhythm, we have struggled in the past with that. We are doing everything in our power to combat it.

Like Costa and Henson, Ball finds motivation in the company of her teammates.

What keeps me motivated is my teammates and the love for competing. Over the summer, we have accountability groups where we discuss how our workouts are going, whats working and what isnt. My group helped me keep focused on the end goal, said Ball.

Ball said developing relationships with her new, freshman teammates will translate into success on the court once safe play is feasible again..

I believe a positive coming out of COVID-19 is the extended time to train and to get to know the team on a deeper level.

Bronze motivated by unfinished business after sealing City switch – Eurosport – INTERNATIONAL (EN)

Posted: at 3:54 am

without comments

Unfinished business and a fear of missing out on a star-studded WSL were the factors that convinced England international Lucy Bronze to return to Manchester City.

The 28-year-old re-signed with the Citizens after a trophy-laden three-year spell in France with Lyon, which concluded with her third Champions League winners' medal.

Football

New signings have lifted the mood at Newcastle, says Bruce

Bronze previously spent three years with City between 2014 and 2017, helping the club win the Barclays FA Women's Super League title, Continental Tyres Cup and FA Women's Cup.

But with a slew of high-profile internationals coming to England, Bronze admitted that the pull to return home was too strong - with City the only destination in her mind.

"Early on in the year I'd already thought about coming home and if I was coming back to England it was only ever going to be City," said the Lionesses full-back.

"So, I didn't really entertain any other conversations. The only other place I would have gone was obviously just to stay at Lyon, so it was kind of just between the two, to be honest.

"Although there was other interest, I just said that I don't want to speak to you."

Asked whether she has unfinished business at City, she added: "I guess so, I mean I won all the domestic trophies with City, we reached the semi-finals of the Champions League also.

"But I want to get the club to the final of the Champions League, I want to win more silverware, so I want to push the team on, push the young kids on and just improve the team in general."

Bronze, who boasts 81 caps for the Lionesses, also revealed how her burning desire to help the national side was another motivating factor behind her return to City.

With Phil Neville due to make way for incoming England boss Sarina Wiegman in September 2021, Bronze wanted to be around more for what will be a busy couple of years.

"Coming home was to help the England squad as well, especially with everything that's going down now, we're changing managers and there's so many competitions coming up," she said.

"It just feels right to be in England to help the team, to be there for important things. Being abroad, as much as I'm in the England squad, there were days that you miss.

"You're turning up to camp late and you have to leave early or you're not really involved in watching a lot of things going on.

"So I think with where I am in my career now it's really important that I came back to England with all these big important competitions coming up."

Bronze is not the only star signing to arrive in the WSL this summer, with World Cup-winning United States midfielders Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle joining her at City.

Lyon teammate Alex Greenwood has also returned home while rivals Manchester United have signed two-time World Cup-winning United States duo Tobin Heath and Christen Press.

And Bronze acknowledges that it would have been tough to watch the WSL from the outside looking in again had she not moved - insisting it is now the place to be.

"I think I've had that [fear of missing out] every year anyway, even from the day I left," she said. "Playing abroad as an English player you kind of get forgotten about by everybody in England.

"Probably ask any of the girls playing abroad and they'll feel that way. But it's just kind of fallen in place for me at the right time now, to come to the WSL.

"I'm feeling very fortunate to move back now. And I definitely would have been a bit sad if I had missed out on this WSL season when there's so many stars and so many different teams.

"It's getting more competitive. I say it every year but the English league has gone from strength to strength and it's only going to get better."

Every violent crime is motivated by ‘hate’ – Spectator.co.uk

Posted: at 3:54 am

without comments

In the early hours of Sunday, a man walked round central Birmingham stabbing people. He killed a 23-year-old man, inflicted critical injuries on two other people and wounded five more. The police were accused of hanging about nervously in cars instead of getting out and tackling the man. Later, Supt Steve Graham gave a press conference. He could not yet say much, he warned, but he could confidently assert that there was absolutely no suggestion at this point that this was in any way, shape or form, motivated by hate.

The stabbings had not been aimed at gay people, but had been random. So thats all right. Supt Graham seemed to be proffering a new category deliberate, fatal attacks which are not motivated by hate. What are they motivated by, then? And why, if in some strange way, shape or form, they are not motivated by hate, are they better than fatal stabbings which are?

The acts are just as intentional, the victims just as dead or wounded. The word hate, in the criminal context, now officially refers only to hatred of minority groups such as BAME or LGBT. This gravely limits its meaning. Hate lies behind almost every violent act committed against the innocent gay, straight; black, white; male, female; young, old. All such hate should be seen as equivalent, morally and in law.

This article is an extract from Charles Moore's Spectator Notes, available in this week's magazine.

The Making of Young Jeezy’s Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101 Album – XXLMAG.COM

The Bigger Picture Young Jeezys debut album, Lets Get It: Thug Motivation 101, introduced the world to Da Snowman and his adored style of gangsta music. In honor of the 15th anniversary of the celebrated LP, released on July 26, 2005, heres a track-by-track breakdown reflecting back on the making of this classic. Compiled by Peter A. Berry, Kemet High, Zoe Johnson, Robby Seabrook III, Bianca Torres and Aleia Woods Editors Note: This story originally appeared in the Fall 2020 issue of XXL Magazine, on stands now.

Young Jeezys early releases put the Atlanta trapper rapper on the map to stardom, but it was his debut album, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, that helped him really take off. The LP serves as a southern classic, celebrated for its trap life rhymes, hard beats and star-studded guest appearances. Grimy but anthemic, club-ready but not crunk, TM101 packaged Jeezys aspirational lyrics with catchy choruses, speaker-thumping, gothic production and the street aphorisms of a hustler who learned skys the limit.

When he was creating TM101, Jeezy, who was managed by Quality Control Music cofounder Kevin Coach K Lee at the time, had already released two independent albums through Jeezys Corporate Thugs imprint. Between July 2004 and January 2005, Jeezy consummated his rise by dropping his Def Jam Recordings debut mixtape, Tha Streets Iz Watchin, and 2005s Trap or Die. He conquered Atlanta, now it was time for the whole south. Helping him with TM101 was the albums executive-producer, Kinky B, and Jeezys longtime friend, Shawty Redd, who produced seven of the projects 19 songs.

TM101 was recorded over the course of 18 months between 2004 and 2005, with most of the tracks being made at Atlantas Patchwerk Studios or Shawty Redds basement. Before releasing his first single, Jeezy put more mainstream heads on notice when he appeared as a member of Diddys Boyz n Da Hoods debut album just one month prior in June 2005. Jeezys fame shot to a new level once he released Soul Survivor, the Akon-assisted recording that reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In honor of the albums 15th anniversary, XXL speaks with Jeezy and others who made TM101, an album that catapulted Jeezy to rap superstar while securing a space in Atlantas rich hip-hop history.

Motivated By The Pandemic And Social Issues, Young Latinos Are Energized About The Presidential Race And Plan To Vote In November According To New…

Telemundo conducted the landmark studyas part of its company-wide initiative "Decision 2020," a nonpartisan multiplatform news and civic engagement effort to provide Latinos with comprehensive information and resources on the issues and the candidates running in the 2020 election. The initiative features expanded news coverage, virtual town halls and hyper-local online voter registration drives with national and local partner organizations to support Latinos during this year's election cycle. Under Decision 2020, Telemundo has launched new digital shows in English and Spanish, offering important election information to young Hispanic voters seeking Latino perspectives in bilingual formats.

"This new research shows that young Latinos, the majority of which are U.S. born and politically engaged, intend to go to the polls in November at unprecedented levels," said Mnica Gil, executive vice president and chief administrative and marketing officer at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. "With one million young Latino voters becoming eligible to vote each year over the next decade, this energized and hardworking 'Generation of Change' is driven by their conviction to secure a place as central actors in our nation's future. This report highlights that there is a clear opportunity for candidates and leaders of all political parties to engage and tap into this vibrant group of voters with plans and solutions that acknowledge and speak directly to the issues that matter most to them."

The research paper's findings offer insight into a critical demographic which, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, turned out to vote in the 2018 midterm elections at nearly twice the rate of previous midterm election cycles. With 91% of young Latinos born in the U.S., since the 2016 presidential election some 3.6 million Latinos will have turned 18 in time to vote in November. Overall this year, a record 32 million Latinos will be eligible to vote, making them the largest share of minority voters for the first time. Solid gains in buying power, college attainment, steady earnings and civic participation over the past several years give young Hispanics growing clout and political influence.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Telemundo, a vital news organization, to get a better understanding of a rapidly expanding and consequential portion of the electorate," said Matt Berman, politics editor at BuzzFeed News. "This research gives a great sense of what actually matters to young Latinos, and how they're engaging with and shaping American politics."

Key insights from the "Young Latinos: A Generation of Change" study include:

Its a really big thing: Shubman Gill reveals how SRK motivated him on his KKR debut – Hindustan Times

Posted: at 3:54 am

without comments

Shubman Gill has the repertoire of strokes to bat at any position but given a choice, the next big thing in Indian cricket would prefer to open regularly in the shortest format of the game.

Gill, one of the batting mainstays of Kolkata Knight Riders, spoke to PTI on a range of issues including the pressure of expectations, his interactions with team co-owner and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his mentor Yuvraj Singhs contribution during the off season.

If I was given an option, I would prefer to open the innings, the 21-year-old answered when asked if he would like to go out there at the start with the flamboyant Sunil Narine.

A batsman to look forward to in the post Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma generation, Gill is considered one of the finest talents among his peers even keeping his U-19 captain Prithvi Shaw in mind.

Does it weigh too much when he is out there in the middle? I dont think it really weighs on me that much, because when I go in to bat the only thing that stays in the mind is how I would score runs in a particular situation.

In my mind, the only goal is to win matches for whichever team I am playing, added Gill, who has an impressive strike-rate of nearly 135 from 37 T20 games.

Gill feels that UAE tracks will have some kind of similarity with Indian pitches and the bat speed wont change much considering the slowish nature of the wicket. The IPL begins September 19.

No, I dont think we need to change to any kind of specific bats (in terms of weight), because in India we are used to playing on slow pitches. You need to adapt and I believe I can play on all kinds of surfaces, he said.

Before joining his team in the UAE, Gill did his pre-season at the Punjab state team nets under Yuvraj Singhs mentorship.

In fact, Gill is excited that the two time World Cup winner is making a comeback to competitive cricket.

I think it will really be helpful for the Punjab youngsters...We spent a couple of weeks with Yuvi Paaji. We were training with him and we also practised (nets) with him.

There were a lot of things that we talked about not just on the field but, you know, some things off the field. It was overall a really good experience for us, Gill, who attended the sessions along with Punjab teammates Abhishek Sharma, and cousin brother Anmolpreet and Prabh Simran Singh.

KKR principal owner Shah Rukh Khan is known to be a great motivator. So what has he told Gill that has stayed with him?I think when I first met him (SRK), and I think I was about to make my IPL debut in that match, he just came and told me just go out there and express yourself. For any youngster, if your owner of the team is telling you to express yourself without having the fear of being dropped or getting dropped. Its a really big thing, he concluded.

Rebecka Reinhard turns a bad memory into motivation on ‘A Pick’ – Vanyaland

Posted: August 12, 2020 at 3:43 am

without comments

The universe sometimes has a cruel way of reminding us of our past. But the human spirit usually finds a way to not only cope, but ultimately prevail.

For Rebecka Reinhard who we last caught up with in late June over her excellent single No Release it was a simple guitar pick found randomly on the street that carried a billboard-sized reminder. That pick, and the name is displayed, triggered an unwanted memory; but it also served as a cathartic catalyst for her new single, the appropriately titled A Pick.

So I found this pick. A guitar pick, Reinhard says. It was lying on the ground, face down and I obviously went to pick it up and when I flipped it over it had my exs name on it, in big black letters, just staring at me like a bad joke. I was still kind of in the process of getting over this person but instead of throwing the pick away I pocketed it and went home and wrote a song about it.

Reinhard adds: Being a true Pisces, shredding the pick until it was all worn down and the name had started fading, I felt like that was the most vengeance I would get. And I felt pretty OK with that. A Pick encapsulates that feeling I often get, of not getting things done the right way or being able to make sense of an overwhelming reality but faking it the best I can, hoping no one will notice.

Much like No Release, this new track will be featured on Reinhards new EP, Whale, due out August 21 via Crowds And Power. Listen to A Pick below.

Clippers’ Lou Williams says opponents should beware of motivated Montrezl Harrell – ESPN

Posted: at 3:43 am

without comments

LA Clippers guard Lou Williams said opponents should beware of a motivated Montrezl Harrell once the Clippers power forward is able to rejoin the team inside the NBA bubble.

"He's back, ready to work," Williams said of Harrell, who is currently in quarantine on the NBA campus in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. "Obviously Trez is a high-energy guy, he is a guy that plays at a high level, extremely physical player, extremely emotional player.

"With some things on his mind, I feel sorry for the other guys on the other team."

1 Related

Harrell returned to the NBA bubble in the middle of the night Sunday. The Sixth Man of the Year finalist left the team on July 17 and recently lost his grandmother. Harrell has posted numerous messages on his social media accounts detailing how emotional the death of his grandmother was while also sharing messages about how motivated he is.

Harrell is one of three key Clippers who left the team briefly in July to tend to an excused family emergency. Patrick Beverley and Williams had also departed the bubble after losing loved ones.

Williams said he understands what Harrell is going through and he's ready for the Clippers to be whole again just before the start of the postseason.

"Obviously when Trez gets back, our group will be in full swing, our team will be in full swing," Williams said. "... I think you see us play well in spurts, then with the minutes and everything, I think our coaching staff, they're getting ready for the big picture.

"Mentally we're getting ready for the big picture. I know there's another level there. I know we have another place that we can tap into. I think guys are getting ready for that."

Clippers coach Doc Rivers said he's looking forward to the possible return of Harrell this week. Pending NBA testing protocol and clearance, Harrell could potentially come out of quarantine before the Clippers' regular-season finale against Oklahoma City on Friday.

"It would be kind of nice to have our normal rotation at least one time in the bubble," Rivers said when asked whether Harrell could be expected to play Friday. "We have to be the only team that has not had their normal rotation one game this entire bubble stretch. It's been tough in that way. But hopefully we can get it for one game."
