San Francisco woman has creative way to motivate people to vote

A San Francisco woman has come up with a creative way to motivate people to vote. It all came about after her plan to run the Chicago Marathon got scrapped because of Covid. Greg Liggins reports

SAN FRANCISCO - A San Francisco woman has come up with a creative way to motivate people to vote.

It all came about after her plan to run the Chicago Marathon got scrapped because of COVID.

Emily Hou of San Francisco had planned to run the Chicago marathon Sunday.

But when she was forced to change her plans months ago, she thought of a different run, one with a purpose.

Hou began lacing up her sneakers in June to begin training.

With COVID, marathons were being canceled, and in July Hou and a friend got the news Chicago would be no different.

We were both like, well, we saw this coming and its for the best, but it was definitely a little disappointing for sure, said Hou.

Already well into her training, Hou decided to continue, keeping that goal of 26.2 miles in her sights.

Chicago offered up a virtual experience, asking participants to complete a marathon and post it on social media.

So, the experienced runner with both the San Francisco and Boston marathons under her belt, needed a route.

But for her it wouldn't be any route; It was an opportunity to do something special.

Either maybe I thought I could run some bridges or I could do something that Id never run in the city and that got me into thinking of doing something a little creative with the route itself, said Hou.

She used the popular website Strava to meticulously plan a run through San Franciscos Richmond District.

Saturday, she set out on her circuitous route, up and down hills, around corners, even backtracking at times.

Exactly 26.3 miles later, her GPS tracking displayed her completed marathon with a message.

In block letters, her steps traced out the words, Vote 2020.

No matter what your political preferences, theres one thing that we all have in common which is encouraging people to go out and vote.

After immigrating to the US as a child, Hou became a citizen in 2016 and voted for the first time.

This is something that I don't take for granted, the ability to vote. This will be my second presidential election ever so, yeah, means a lot to me that I can participate in democracy in this country.

Her post on the website Reddit has drawn a litany of positive comments, such as This is so beautiful in so many ways, and Kickass run there! My ballot is marked, sealed, signed and ready to take to City Hall tomorrow.

Though her race was canceled, she hopes her effort motivates others to participate in all the other races on the ballot.

It took a lot of effort for me to run 26 miles and map this whole course out. I think if it convinces at least one person to go out and vote and practice their right to vote then this would've all been worth it, said Hou.

Without the pandemic canceling the race, she says she would have never thought of doing something like this.

She also says she plans to run the Chicago marathon next year, assuming its not virtual again.

How to stay motivated through winter top tips from the pros – Cycling Weekly

Posted: at 6:58 am

without comments

This article is part of Cycling Weeklys Love Winter week, guiding you through setting up your bike and yourself for riding through the winter months. Theres plenty to enjoy about riding in winter, and well show you how to get the most out of it. For more Love Winter articles, click here.

Experienced and young professionals have lauded the benefits of cross-training in winter to improve both physical and mental health.

As the northern hemisphere approaches shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures, it is easy to succumb to the narrative that our cycling experiences deteriorate and so too does our fitness.

While indoor fitness trainers and apps like Zwift have revolutionised the experience behind doors, making a habit of not riding on your road bike every time you head outside can set you up for an even better fitness base and help not just maintain but increase motivation.

Koen de Kort, a veteran of 20 professional seasons, goes out on his motorbike to replicate the feel of road racing, but when he fancies more pedal-powered adrenaline, the Dutch 38-year-old gets his mountain bike out of the garage. In the winter I do a lot of mountain biking, mainly choosing cross-country over downhill trails, the Trek-Segafredo rider tells Cycling Weekly.

Mountain biking can be a way of keeping you fresh on your road bike (Getty Images / AzmanJaka)

The most important part of getting out on the mountain bike is that its good, hard training but you feel like youre doing something completely different. Psychologically, it makes it easier to do the training because its not the same thing all year around.

Its really good for bike-handling skills too, and on the descents and ascents, you use your core muscles more than you do on the road bike. There are a lot of advantages.

Briton Gabriel Cullaigh, a neo-pro with Movistar, has raced the Manchester winter track league in recent seasons and highlights its use. The cyclocross and track guys keep the intensity up all winter long, so theres something to be said for going out in the winter and hitting it hard constantly, the 24-year-old says.

Personally, I would find that mentally taxing, and nice base miles are more important to me, but to keep the knife sharp with intervals, track league is perfect.

Im considering doing it again this winter. You rock up, support the scene, get stuck in, it keeps you fresh and its basically intervals for free. Youre getting your efforts without thinking about it.

Meanwhile Gruff Lewis, one of the most consistent riders on the British domestic scene in the past decade and a former Welsh cyclocross champion, turns to running in the winter. For quite a few winters now I have run a lot in the winter, even joining a running club for the group and social factor, the 32-year-old Ribble-Weldtite rider says

I run typically three times a week and do about 40km, with two-thirds of it on road and the rest of it on trail.

The thing I like about running is that you havent got a free wheel so youre really in touch with your effort. Youre always on an effort, even on a downhill which is often hard. Its great for your weight, too. Running, for me, is a good strength session and is good for your balance and muscles.

Running is a simple alternative in the winter

Running is something that resonates with Cullaigh, who will also be hitting his local mountain bike trails in the winter. I do a little bit of running too, as well as more gym work. Its important, I think, to have a robust system not just for road cycling.

Obviously theres the mental side of it that changes things up, but it toughens the body up too. I remember reading an article from Sean Kelly who encouraged riders to chop wood, lay bricks, go walking, it could be anything, but his point was that mixing it up helps your body not be as frail and so as susceptible to injuries and theres a lot of truth in that.

No one should feel bad about not riding your road bike every day. You can do different exercises and activities.

Its easy to paint winter as a bleak time of the year, but its a season that actually just offers different perspectives and experiences, ones that should be seen in a positive light. Cullaigh says: I dont think there is anything better than a crisp winters day with a bit of frost overnight, but not on the road. Heading into the hills with a good group of mates, I love it. Its gorgeous out there on days like that in the winter.

Theres still nothing like a road ride on a crisp winter morning (Russ Ellis)

Cullaigh touches on group riding. Being together, having a laugh when the weather is grim, stopping for a mid-ride coffee and to warm up again, its great for morale, he says.

And when the weather is bad, just remember that by going out and riding, youve already got one-up one most of your rivals. When the weather isnt great, 60 percent of the competition have already given up and decided to take the day off. The feeling of completing the planned session is so satisfying, especially knowing others decided against.

U.S. House 9th District preview: What motivated Andrew Clyde to run for Congress – Dawson Community News

Posted: at 6:58 am

without comments

Clyde is facing Democrat Devin Pandy of Gainesville in the Nov. 3 general election for the Northeast Georgia seat.

Clydes ordeal began in 2013, when he was hit by civil asset forfeiture. The IRS confiscated about $940,000 from his gun shop, Clyde Armory. Federal agents ultimately found no issues and returned $900,000 to Clyde.

The experience inspired him to go to Washington, D.C., to advocate for civil asset forfeiture reform. Clyde had been accused of structuring, or setting up bank deposits to avoid reporting to the IRS.

The RESPECT Act, signed by President Donald Trump in 2019, changed IRS rules to only allow forfeiture for structuring if the money comes from an illegal source or is used to hide illegal activity. Prosecutors are now required to demonstrate probable cause that the seized money was somehow used illegally.

It should prevent any other law-abiding citizen from ever suffering the abuse that I suffered, he said at the time[CS1] .

Clyde, 56, reflecting on the experience in the recent interview, said he found that part of the government is off the rails. You dont do that to a small business.

He founded Clyde Armory in 1991 as a hobby business and made it a full-time venture in 1999, after graduating from the University of Georgia with a masters degree in business administration.

Meanwhile, he was also serving in the Navy Reserve. Clyde, who was born in Ontario, Canada, and who has U.S. citizenship as both his parents are citizens, started his journey up the Navy ranks at University of Notre Dames ROTC.

He ended up serving in the Navy for 11 years active duty and 17 years in the Navy Reserve, including deployments to the Middle East, where he was stationed in Kuwait and Iraq. He retired from the Reserve as a commander in 2013.

He said he believes his military background helped refine perseverance as a personal character trait.

Clyde had to lean on that to get through a challenging political season, one that began with a nine-candidate field seeking the Republican nomination for the 9th District seat. And then, he won a contentious Aug. 11 runoff against state Rep. Matt Gurtler, R-Tiger.

In a nod to his profession, protecting gun rights covered by the Second Amendment is a top priority for Clyde.

Deregulation hasnt happened in the firearms industry, he said, citing especially the rules on noise-reducing devices on firearms.

Everything that makes noise above 85 decibels, at which a person can start to lose their hearing, has a muffler on it, Clyde said. The government is penalizing people who want to put that kind of (equipment) on a firearm. Youve got to pay a $200 tax and wait almost a year to get one. Having a firearm is a constitutional right. Its unconstitutional to tax a constitutional right.

Also, he strongly advocates right to life.

If people dont have respect for life, then what do they have respect for? Clyde said. I firmly believe that life begins at conception and ends at natural death, and that God created life and that life is precious and needs to be protected.

Hes also pushing for rural broadband improvements.

Its like the electricity of the 1930s and the telephones of the 1940s, Clyde said. If we have to do all this distance learning and work from home, if youre not connected, how are you going to be able to do that?

And businesses are learning that without connectivity to the internet, youre just not going to be very successful. I want businesses to have every advantage in North Georgia.

Messi is motivated and could stay at Barcelona for years Puyol pleased to see Camp Nou exit talk ended … – Goal

The Blaugrana legend, who admits to having considered a move away from the club himself, always felt that the Argentine would agree to stay put

Lionel Messi is feeling motivated at Barcelona and could go on to spend many years at Camp Nou, claims Carles Puyol.

It appeared at one stage over the summer as though thesix-time Ballon dOr winner would be bringing his career-long association with Barcelona to a close.

Messi believed that an exit clause in his clause would allow him to move on, but Barca made it clear that the agreement had expired, leading the33-year-old to reveal to Goal that he will be honouring the final year of his contract.

A move in 2021 could still be on the cards, with Manchester City among those continuing to monitor the situation, but a new deal at Camp Noucannot be ruled out.

Puyol believes Messi can be convinced to stay put, with the Argentine having looked fully committed to the Barca cause through the opening weeks of the current campaign.

Like any fan, I did not want Messi to leave, but this is football, former Blaugrana captain Puyol told reporters. In the end he decided to stay. He recently said that he is motivated, that he wants to win and we hope he can continue with us for many years.

He is a huge asset for La Liga, he is one of the best in the world.

Puyol says he can appreciate why Messi may have considered making a move away from Camp Nou. The legendary former defender passed up many opportunities to leave Barcelona himself before ending hiscareer as a one-club man.

Serie A giants Milan came as close as anybody to putting a deal in place, with theWorld Cup-winning centre-half admitting that an Italian adventure alongside Paolo Maldini held plenty of appeal to him.

Puyol added: In 2014, after my injury, I chose to retire despite the offers from English and Italian clubs. When your club is also your home you don't feel like wearing another shirt

I would have loved to go to Milan to play with Maldini, my idol. The Rossoneri will be back, even if they are going through a difficult moment now. I would have been happy to end my career in Italy.

Messi has also seen a move to Milan mooted, with Inter among his many suitors.

Accident father motivation for Formula 1: "He has more reasons than anyone else". – GPblog

Posted: at 6:58 am

Mick Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut at the Nurburgring last Friday. Michael Schumacher's son will have to be patient for a while, but no one doubts that he will get a permanent place in the Formula 1 in the future. According to Jan Lammers this has mainly to do with his motivation and drive. Frits van Amersfoort sees similarities between Verstappen and Schumacher.

Schumacher junior is currently still driving in Formula 2 where he is going for his first title. A place in Formula 1 is the logical next step, although according to Van Amersfoort this has partly to do with his famous surname. Lammer tells the NOS Formula 1 podcast that there is nobody with a greater motivation to get into Formula 1 than the young member of the famous racing family.

"You can learn car racing. After that, it's all about motivation. I know people who were brilliant at car control but they didn't care whether they came second or third. With Mick you see the enormous drive. Look what he went through with his dad on the track." Michael Schumacher went into a coma in a skiing accident and is still recovering from that".

Lammer continues: "If you go through that, you have an incredible drive. Then as a son I can imagine that you want to do everything to succeed in Formula 1 and win races. He has more reasons than anyone else to perform well".

Van Amsersfoort worked for the young Schumacher and Lammers agrees: "I have had the privilege of ever being at home with the family. The whole family is surrounded by motor racing and you can see that with Mick. He really isn't the absolute natural talent, but because he comes from such a family, he can bring it up. The great thing about a family that comes from motor racing is that the Leclerc family and, in a way, the Verstappen family: they know what motor racing is, they know that one day it can go wrong or something can go wrong, and then there is no man overboard. Everybody is upset, but tomorrow we will continue again", concludes Van Amersfoort.

Real Madrid: Hazard’s motivation to be the best questioned – AS English

Posted: at 6:57 am

without comments

Ex-Madridista Clarence Seedorf, the player who has won the European Cup with the most teams (Real Madrid, Ajax and AC Milan) spoke to Goal.com and expressed doubts over the competitive nature of Real Madrids Eden Hazard.

Questioned about potential candidates for the Ballon dOr - taking over from the dominant pair of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - the Dutch coach put the Belgian player on the list, but with certain reservations.

The question is more: are we going to see some of the younger generation to step up their game? That's what I'd like to see, because Cristiano and Messi have shown for the last 12-13 years the ability to continue to do their thing.

There are enough players that could step it up. Neymar had decent season, but he's one of them who can still step it up and be there, then we have some midfielders like De Bruyne.

We have Hazard, I always said that Hazard easily can be there but it's about are you motivated to be the best? And Lukaku who has been amazing, he has jumped up the last season.

Maybe I'm forgetting a few, Lewandowski did an amazing job, Coutinho, all these players. There are many players, Man, Salah.

Top talent | Liverpool's Egyptian midfielder Mohamed Salah PETER POWELL(AFP)

So, it's about the consistency which Messi and Ronaldo have shown. Cristiano has shown all the players that they can be consistent over the years at that level and that's a mentality thing, that's a motivation and drive that champions have. Let's hope to see more.

Seedorf also spoke about the potential of Cristiano equalling his European Cup record although reminds us that hell always be the first.

It'll be a very nice pleasure to have Cristiano Ronaldo equalling my record. We could've talked about somebody different, right? So, I don't think it's a bad thing.

I will always be the first and that won't change, and records are there to be equalled and to be broken, and Juventus can definitely always be competitors for the Champions League. As I said before, Cristiano is maintaining his motivation and his performances, so yeah. Why not?

Cristiano Ronaldo poses after The Best FIFA Football Awards at the London Palladium in 2017. Michael Regan - FIFA(FIFA via Getty Images)

And on whether or not Messi and Cristiano can continue to push for more Ballon dOr success?

I think if they are fit and motivated, they will continue to perform at a high level, both of them. I don't see why they wouldnt.

This Is the Motivational Water Bottle Tia Mowry Swears By for Proper Hydration – Well+Good

Posted: at 6:57 am

without comments

Drinking enough water feels beyond difficult if youre not tracking your intake or really mindful about how much and how often you sip. But Tia Mowry, a star of the beloved 1994 sitcom Sister, Sister (now on Netflix) and author of the cookbook Whole New You, knows the secret to proper daily hydration: a motivational water bottle.

Im drinking a gallon of water a day, Mowry said during an episode of Glowing Live With Latham,a monthly series on Well+Goods IGTV. [This bottle is] really cool. I love it because Im all about affirmations. It says good morning, hydrate yourself, remember your goal, and then it goes all the way up to 9 p.m. So [to take care of myself,] Im drinking my water, Im meditating, Im exercising, Im just trying to keep my stress levels down.

Shop now: Venture Pal Large 1 Gallon Motivational Water Bottle ($19)

For Mowry, getting enough water is all part of her approach to wellness, which centers on how she fuels and hydrates her body.

Whats really important and what people dont necessarily think is important is making sure that youre focusing on what youre putting inside your bodybecause your body is all you have, Mowry said. Your body is your vessel, its what you use throughout the day, so youve got to take care of it.

When youre not drinking enough water, you can experience issues like headaches, urinary tract infections, congested skin, depleted energy, and indigestion. Aside from the motivational prompts, having a bottle like Mowrys is helpful because it serves as a constant reminder to drink.

One of the best ways to drink more water is to give yourself easy access to it, saysAmy Gorin, RDN, a plant-based registered dietitian in the New York City area. Carry around a water bottle with you to sip throughout the day. Make sure its a bottle that you likefor instance, there are wide-mouth bottles or ones with straws.

Niti Patel, RD, MS, a dietitian based in New York City, adds that starting good water habits when youre young will help you out as you age when youre at a higher risk of dehydration.

[The elderly] are losing that ability to be like, Oh wow, I should really have a sip of water, or I should eat something that has a lot of fluid in it, Patel says. I was a caregiver for an elderly family member and I always had to be very forceful, be like, Okay, lets have a glass of water now. Okay, lets drink some water. Thats something that you have to do as you get older.

Prescott has spent his entire career in Dallas, and hes made big improvements since he joined the team. Going into the 2016 NFL draft, the Cowboys were looking for a backup to Tony Romo. They ended up taking Prescott in the fourth round of the draft. During preseason, Prescott had to compete for the backup position. When Romo suffered a vertebral compression fracture in the preseason, Prescott was named the starting quarterback for the 2016 season.

He became the fourth rookie quarterback to open the season as a starter in franchise history and the first rookie to start at quarterback for the Cowboys since Quincy Carter in 2001. Prescott put together an impressive rookie season throwing for 3,667 yards with 23 touchdowns and rushing for 282 yards with six touchdowns. He led the Cowboys to a 13-3 record during his first year, and he was named the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year. Prescott was also selected to the Pro Bowl.

Over the next three years, Prescott continued to put up impressive numbers for the Cowboys. The 2019 season was his best of his career so far. He finished the season with a career-high in passing yards (4,902) and touchdowns (30). The 27-year-old has made a name for himself during his NFL career.

Prescott made four starts during the 2020 season, and even though the Cowboys had a 1-3 start during Prescotts time as the starting quarterback, he still put up impressive numbers. During the Week 5 game against the Giants, Cowboys fans and NFL fans witnessed Prescott go down during the third quarterwith an ankle injury. Prescott was sitting on the ground holding his ankle, and you could see the disappointment on his face.

He had to get carted off the field, and he was in tears as he left the game. Prescott was set to have a big year during the 2020 season. According to Sportscenters Twitter page, Prescott had a total of 1,949 yards and 13 touchdowns. It was a brutal blow for Cowboys fans to see their star quarterback go down like that. Prescott has put in a lot of work since he entered the league, and hes a very dedicated player to his team.

While Prescott was in the hospital getting ready for his surgery, his brother, Tad, posted a photo with Dak on hisTwitter pageand had a message that fans wanted to hear. God is good, and hell be back STRONGER than ever. I F****ING guarante3 IT. Lets go @dak continue to walk by #FAITH & Ill make sure you continue to #FIGHT.

Dak has a special relationship with his family, and they are very supportive of one another. In the photo that his brother posted, Dak had a smile on his face, and his brother knows that this injury will not stop him from becoming the best player and person he can be.
