People have personalities, not businesses - right? When people go to work they paint on their work faces, put on their work hats and become the consummate professional. Theres a manner in which bosses and colleagues expect their employees to sound, look and act when in the workplace.

Yes theres a need to be professional, yes customers demand a deservedly high level of attention, care and service but is there a need to be so dull, stuffy and corporate about it?

The Business of People

Businesses consist of physical assets, products and services but its ultimately people who are the nucleus of a business. Owners, Directors and Managers set strategies and employees execute those strategies to the paying public. Employees and customers have individual personalities, morals and values and so can a business.

Yoga and prayer for full-body worship experience

Worship requires neither proper place nor proper clothing. For believers, the same could be said of God's grace. It requires no invitation and is necessitated by no particular Sunday morning ritual. It can sometimes show itself ostentatiously on a Monday morning or slyly reveal itself entirely unbidden on a Thursday at 3:15.

And sometimes it can show up when you are in an uncomfortable yoga position where you started by doing a push-up, then your left knee dropped to the floor near your right hip and your forearms lowered to the mat and then your right leg fell to the floor and your right foot's circulation is about done and you're supposed to be lifting your chest up at the same time.

And there it is. What everyone here has come for, really. That moment that "I'm with God by myself," explains Courtney Scantlin, a working mother of two from Lake Forest, Calif., who is not so unfamiliar with God's grace that she is blinded by the fact that she is also multitasking while doing Holy Yoga at Mariner's Church in Mission Viejo, Calif., on a Tuesday night.

But, say its adherents, Holy Yoga is hardly an attempt to make worship more convenient for the overtaxed 21st-century fitness-minded set. Imagined 10 years ago by Brooke Boon, a yogi before she was a Christian, its mission statement is designed to put a halt to those Christian groups that might find the traditional Eastern practice of yoga somehow suspect as a vehicle for Christian reverence.

"Holy Yoga," the statement reads, "is experiential worship specifically created to deepen your connection to Christ. Our sole purpose is to combine world-class yoga with a Christ-honoring experience that offers an opportunity to believers and non-believers alike to authentically connect with God. We do this by integrating His Word, prayer, worship and the physical practice of yoga to contemporary and Christian music."

With their hair banded, barretted and bandeaued into place, 17 women of varying ages join two brave men for 90 minutes of this unique brand of yoga led by instructor Brooke Thompson in a room that's painted to resemble the interior of a submarine. Suffice to know, it's the exact exercise experience you'd expect if you know yoga. Tonight, we'll downward dog, strike the warrior and tree poses, form a bridge with our bodies and make like a pigeon see circulation loss, above.

All while Thompson exhorts and leads like a normal instructor.

Except for this, for starters: The class begins with a prayer.

Astros find utilizing yoga beneficial

Posted: at 2:42 pm

ANAHEIM, Calif. On Tuesdays and Fridays when the Astros are home, a yoga instructor and a handful of players occupy the Astros press conference room at Minute Maid Park, a space used more commonly for manager Bo Porters nightly media debriefings.

Hosted by instructor Christin Staszesky Harper, the classes began last season. Participants have included Wednesday nights starting pitcher, Collin McHugh, as well as Anthony Bass, Dallas Keuchel and Brett Oberholtzer. The classes are open to the entire team, even if cerebral pitchers have found their way through the doors more often this season.

It helps with mobility, it helps with core stability, Astros strength and conditioning coach Jake Beiting said. And then secondarily, I think its a really good mental benefit when you look at being able to teach yourself to keep your body relaxed kind of keeping your mind in the moment.

Baseball is in many ways a violent sport, every play just another burst of intensity. Yoga, at first glance, might not seem a relevant fit. But its use in baseball and other professional sports has taken off because of the potential gains in breathing, strengthening of core muscles and focus.

Matt Repplinger, a Denver-based baseball yoga consultant, said that even compared to two years ago, yogas practice has grown immensely in the majors.

Id say that 60 percent of the teams have someone working with them now, Repplinger said. From the Mets, to the Phillies, from the Dodgers to the Rockies, they have got either a full-time or a part-time instructor.

Veteran Chad Qualls was with the Padres in 2011, and in spring training, they had mandatory yoga sessions on occasion.

Ive done pilates, I liked pilates, said Qualls, who isnt a yoga practitioner himself. In San Diego, they just did (yoga) in spring training. It was like once a week, instead of doing poles or sprints or something, our cardio for the day would be a half-hour, hour yoga class. Just to get people a little more flexible, change it up a little bit.

It was around (when I first got to the majors). I think people have always tried to gain an edge anywhere. You hear of football players doing ballet. Im just a naturally tight person, my hamstring, lower back, hips have always been tight. Some people that are more flexible, youre more loose and you feel better, the more you stretch, the more you get limber, the better youre going to feel on a daily basis.

Some teachers approach yoga with a spiritual element, which might deter some people immediately, Beiting said.
