Sarah Gardner raises money to aid children through Yoga Reaches Out

Her Yoga Reaches Out charity has held Yogathons on both coasts and collected more than $1 million to help children and their families.

A recent article in Forbes says that innovation is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. It sounds clich, but it stands to reason.

I wonder: Does a person who perspires a lot say a personal trainer or certified yoga instructor possess a greater capacity to transform innovative ideas into realities? I have no way of knowing, but after meeting Sarah Gardner, Im inclined to say hell yes!

Sarah is indeed a personal trainer and yoga instructor, hailing from Wayland, MA (just west of Boston). She recalls driving down a major highway in 2009 and saying out loud, "I want to have a Yogathon at Gillette Stadium to help kids in need."

For the sake of context, Gillette Stadium is the home of the New England Patriots. Its a big venue. Up until that moment, Sarah had never spearheaded and organized a fundraising event in her life. (That moment in the car was the 1% of inspiration.)

Fast forward to Sunday, April 27, 2014, when more than 1,000 people will pack Gillette Stadiums Dana Farber Fieldhouse for theYoga Reaches Out (YRO) Yogathon benefiting Boston Childrens Hospital and Citizen Schools. Since Sarahs first Yogathon in 2010, YRO has held annual Yogathons on both coasts, has raised more than $1 million, and distributed those funds to numerous organizations focused on helping children and their families. (These last two sentences these describe the 99% perspiration.)

In a 2012 article, Sarah spoke about her motivation and purpose.

I started YRO to bring the yoga community together to create seva [selfless service]. If we can take the power of yoga and direct it toward helping children in need, then what we practice on our mat is taken off the mat to truly make a difference in the lives of others. Its simple, helping children in need is my main goal and the mission of YRO.

Yoga Wear: When Will Women Learn?

Posted: at 9:44 pm

Ladies, Im going to tell you something that you probably dont want to hear:

Yoga pants should not be worn anywhere you dont want someone looking at your butt crack. When you wear yoga pants, your crack shows. Sometimes shows in flesh tones. We can read the label on your panties.

If you insist on wearing them, make sure your butt is covered by your top. Failing that, under no circumstances should you stoop or bend over for anything. If you drop car keys, leave them and call for someone to pick them up. Dont mess with your kids. Dont tie your shoes. And dont blame anyone who looks at your backside. They likely arent being lewd. Theyre wondering why you are.

This is the kind of thing that, in some circles, could get my Man Card revoked. But I think some guys especially fathers with daughters will thank me for finally saying what no one else had the courage to say. Its kind of like the Emperors New Clothes.

I know, I know. Youre going to protest that only those faulty Lululemon pants had that problem.

Nope. Thats what bewildered us guys when that story broke. Did you ladies not realize that MOST yoga pants do that? Ask a girlfriend. Bend over in front of her and ask. Then return the favor.

Think these are all one line of Lululemon?

Oh, and by the way, Uggs are hideous.

School yoga program stretches out

Posted: at 9:44 pm

La Costa Heights Elementary School students demonstrate yoga for parents and other adults at the Sonima yoga studio in Encinitas on Wednesday.

ENCINITAS The foundation that created a yoga program that sparked a lawsuit and drew international attention to the Encinitas Union School District has quietly introduced similar programs to two other county schools and to schools in New York.

Gene Ruffin, executive director of the Sonima Foundation, said at an open house Wednesday at the foundations headquarters in Encinitas that there has been no controversy in the programs expansion, and he expects to announce two more schools where yoga will be introduced in the near future.

A University of San Diego researcher who attended the open house said a study on the effects of the yoga program in Encinitas has been completed and that it showed yoga had a positive effect on students health.

The results have been fantastic, Ruffin said.

In 2012, Sonima then called the K.P. Jois Foundation gave the Encinitas school district $533,000 to begin a yoga program and to fund a study of its effects. Last summer the foundation gave another $1.4 million to to expand the program to all Encinitas Union schools as part of districts health and wellness curriculum.

The foundation had planned to create a yoga curriculum in Encinitas that could be introduced to other schools, but things got off to a bumpy start when some parents sued the district, arguing the yogra program was religious and a violation of laws regarding the separation of church and state.

Many other families, however, agreed with district officials who saw the yoga program as little more than stretching exercises.

Although the district had changed the name of poses to crisscross applesauce and other child-friendly, secular terms, a lawsuit filed by attorney Dean Broyles, president of the Escondido--based National Center for Law & Policy, argued that the very act of practicing yoga could lead to interest in Hinduism and other Eastern beliefs.

The lawsuit attracted international media attention and concluded last July with San Diego Superior Court Judge John Meyer siding with the school district.
