Losing sleep over excercise is hurting you: study

TIME spent exercising should not cut into sleep time if people want to get the best health benefits, a new Australian study has found.

The study, by University of Queensland and University of South Australia researchers, found how different exercise schedules could have different effects on health.

It analysed the exercise habits of 129 previously inactive adults aged 18 to 60 years old for six weeks, with three groups exercising for between 150 to 300 extra minutes a week.

The study, UQ research fellow Dr Sjaan Gomersall said, found as people tried to fit in exercise around work, sleep and relaxation time, it could have both positive and negative overall effects.

"When people undertake a new exercise program, the time spent in other domains, such as sleep or screen time, must be reduced to accommodate the new activity," Dr Gomersall said.

"If a new exerciser chooses to reduce screen time to accommodate exercise, for example, then there will presumably be additional health benefits, given that sedentary time is a risk factor for mortality and cardiovascular disease.

"Conversely, if they choose to sleep less, the benefits of physical activity may be reduced and ultimately lead to negative health outcomes such as obesity and depression."

It also found that starting an exercise regime could cut down the time spent watching television by up to 50 minutes a day.

"However, results also showed that this positive health outcome was offset by participants spending an extra 30 minutes a day using computers," Dr Gomersall said.

"This may indicate they were taking work home because they left early to exercise.

Politicians voice concern over flag burning

Posted: at 6:46 pm

Senior politicians are voicing their concerns over the protest burning of the Israeli flag.

Photos of a weekend protest in Auckland against Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip show a hand-painted Israeli flag, with a Nazi swastika in place of the Star of David, being waved in the protest.

The Israeli and US flags being burnt.

Labour MP David Shearer understands the anger that exists around the Gaza situation but says flag burning's not appropriate.

New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters holds a similar view - he says if it goes too much further there will be violence and that won't be tolerated.

However, there's alleged bad behaviour by members of Mana.

The party's under fire, after its flags were seen next to burning Israeli flags at a protest in Auckland on Saturday.

Jewish Council president Steven Goodwin says Nazi swastikas were also painted on some of the flags.

LDF workers stage dharna against hike in prices of food items

Posted: at 6:46 pm

CPI(M) led LDF Opposition workers today staged a dharna before the Secretariat here, demanding that the Centre and State governments check rise in prices of essential commodities.

Inaugurating the agitation, CPI(M) veteran and leader of Opposition in the Assembly, V S Achuthanandan criticised the economic policies of both the NDA government led by Narendra Modi and Oommen Chandy led UDF government in Kerala.

"Both the Modi and Chandy governments are responsible for the spurt in prices of food items', he said, adding LDF would intensify its agitation in the coming days.

Terming the rise in prices as 'war on people', he said the policies pursued by the NDA are totally against the interests of the common man.

Alleging that the NDA government has ignored Kerala, Achuthanandan said the Railway budget had not considered any of the state's long-pending demands.

In the general budget also, the state was neglected, he said, adding Kerala's dream scheme like All India Institute of Medical Sciences was not sanctioned.

"The common man's life has become strenuous due to increase in prices of commodities. The price of one kg rice which was Rs 21 a few months back has jumped to Rs 40 to Rs 45. Similar is the case with prices of vegetables," he added.

Achuthanandan also took a dig at Chandy, saying he had no time to intervene in matters related to the people, but was mainly engaged in the excercise of cabinet reshuffle.

The CPI(M) leader made it clear that government cannot 'hoodwink' the people with this action.

Several LDF MLA's were among those who participated in the dharna.

Red Cross of Idaho needs more blood donations

The Red Cross of Idaho is running low on blood donations.

Every 20 seconds, someone in Idaho needs blood, but things at the Red Cross donation center in Boise... are a little quiet.

In Idaho, the Red Cross strives to collect 1200 pints of blood each day. In the summer months, they aren't hitting that goal.

"We've seen an eight percent decline in donation over the last eleven weeks," said Jane Stutzman, a donor recruitment manager for the American Red Cross.

People are out on vacation or busy enjoying the outdoors. Some people fear donating blood, but then being unable to participate in summer recreations. The truth is a healthy person's fluids will normally be replaced in a day. Losing a day of excercise to donate makes a big difference.

"You are making an impact in patients' lives for them and for their family."

Donating blood really is easy. On Your Sides Jake Melder came in during his work day. It takes forty-five minutes. There's a quick medical history, some swabbing, a quick needle poke, a little bit of waiting, and in minutes you're done. They even give you treats. Treats are the best.

Sean Falconer stopped by to donate a pint Tuesday. Overall, he's donated more than a gallon.

"We produce enough blood to share with everyone, said Falconer. I know there's a need for blood so I'm happy to come, spend 45 minutes or so and do it every couple of months."

The staff at the donation center make the experience fun and enjoyable.

FitRider bike puts those lazy arms to use

Posted: at 4:48 am

Much as cycling is a good source of exercise for the lower body and the core, it admittedly doesn't do much for the upper body. We've seen a number of attempts to address this shortcoming, mostly in the form of bikes that are pedaled with both the legs and the arms. The FitRider takes a somewhat different approach, looking somewhat like a cross between a regular bicycle and a NordicTrack.

Instead of traditional handlebars, the FitRider has two vertical ski pole-like levers that extend down to the pedals, and which pivot in the middle where they meet the aluminum frame. Each one is connected to its respective pedal via a steel rod, allowing arm power applied to the levers to augment the leg power that's applied to the pedals.

If the rider's arms get tired, they can disconnect those rods and secure them to an anchoring point on the frame, locking the levers in a more traditional non-pivoting configuration. They can still turn from side to side, however, to facilitate steering.

In its current form, the FitRider also features a suspension fork, 700C wheels, and a 14-speed drivetrain.

Its creators, Bill Capek and Abraham Mathew, are now in the process of raising production funds on Kickstarter. A pledge of US$1,800 will get you one, when and if they're ready to go. The estimated retail price is $2,199.

You can see the bike in action, in the pitch video below.

RBI starts scrutiny of companies suspected of illegal money raising

Posted: July 20, 2014 at 9:46 pm

As part of its efforts to protect gullible investors from fraudulent investment schemes, the Reserve Bank has started scrutinising credentials of companies suspected of illegally raising money from public as NBFCs.

The central bank's action follows the Corporate Affairs Ministry sending a list of more than 34,700 firms that came under its scanner for allegedly pooling money as non-bank finance companies (NBFCs).

The Ministry had prepared the list early last year when Rs 10,000-crore Saradha chit fund scam -- that duped thousands of investors of their hard earned money -- came to light.

Sources said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has begun analysing details of entities, which are believed to have raised money from the public illegally without getting registered as NBFCs.

The cases are being pursued after reference from the Corporate Affairs Ministry to probe 34,754 companies (other than those registered with RBI). NBFCs are regulated by the RBI.

Sources said all the entities, which are under the scanner, would be provided an opportunity to clarify their position, before taking action.

The excercise has revealed that 4,102 companies were registered with RBI as NBFCs.

In the second stage, sources said, the RBI focused on the remaining 30,652 companies and it revealed that 13,647 companies are not meeting the business criteria requiring certificate of registration for functioning as NBFC.

Further, complete information on 6,182 companies is not available in the Ministry website and 4,125 companies are under liquidation.

Of the remaining 6,698 companies, only 213 are accepting public deposits and 1,643 are meeting business criteria for NBFC certification, sources said, adding, 4,842 companies are ineligible for registration as NBFCs.

Barrington center offers complementary approach to neuromuscular, autoimmune treatment

Posted: July 17, 2014 at 7:54 pm

In 2001, Barrington resident Joy Wagner left her job as a nurse at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.

Wagner was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and the condition soon began to affect her vision and equilibrium, interfering with her ability to care for her children.

So she decided to do something about it, creating a fitness and rehab regimen she would eventually offer to others.

I decided to work with people like me, said Wagner, who runs the FitMS NeuroBalance Center on Hart Road. I think its just about pushing the envelope and looking under every rock.

The FitMS NeuroBalance Center is a community resource center that offers fitness and training for people living with neuromuscular and autoimmune disorders.

Our specialty is people with neuromuscular and autoimmune diseases, but its for anyone whose mobility and balance have been challenged, Wagner explained.

FitMS NeuroBalance Center offers weekly classes and one-on-one training for people with various conditions by incorporating repetitive exercises, mirrors, yoga and other forms of physical therapy.

I would describe us as complementary medicine, Wagner said, noting the goal of her programs is to tailor exercise routines to make a difference for clients, but not overwhelm or exhaust them.

Its about riding that balance, she said.

FitMS NeuroBalance Center chiropractor LeeAnn Steinfeldt said she works with Parkinsons patients, focusing on balance, muscle and strength to help the brain work with the body.
