Fresh fight stalls Osun election materials inspection

Counsels to Governor Rauf Aregbesola and Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday engaged in a fresh physical combat over an attempt to use video camera to record the inspection of election materials.

Our correspondent gathered that the inspection had hardly started when a camera man hired by Aregbesolas legal team started recording the proceedings but one of the counsels representing the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Kehinde Adesiyan objected the move.

Adesiyan was said to to have argued that video recording of the proceedings was not part of the order given by Justice I. M Bako-led Election Petitions Tribunal.

However, it was gathered that Aregbesolas counsel, Mr. Dawood Akinloye, insisted that they had the liberty to record the inspection since it was not in any way tampering with it except the PDP had something to hide.

Akinloye at this point collected the camera from the camera man and started recording as PDP lawyers were inspecting the election material.

Hot argument ensued and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission stepped in to douse the tension.

An official of INEC reportedlysaid that the commission would record the inspection and give copies of the recordings to the two parties but Akinloye raised an objection to this, saying he could not rely on the INEC for their recording since his client had brought a camera for the same purpose.

Akinloyes refusal to stop recording the inspection was said to have resulted into a fight between him and Adesiyan.

Akinloye later told journalists in an interview that Adesiyanattacked him and held his neck while he was filming the happenings at the INEC office.

He said, We brought a camera man to record the inspection but they said no. They threatened to arrest him. I took the camera from the man and started recording but resisted me.

TB a national emergency; says Vardhan

New Delhi, Sep 6, 2014, PTI:

The Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan today launched India's first National anti-Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Survey, India 2014-15 here today, saying that such an excercise will help form a better understanding of the disease. The survey, which would be held in collaboration with WHO and USAID, will have the largest ever sample size, 5,214 people, covering 120 TB units in 24 states.

"The patients to be surveyed will include first timers and retreatment cases. Their resistance levels against 13 anti-TB drugs would be observed - five of them first-line and eight second-line," Vardhan said.

He stressed on the international significance of the survey findings and analysis based on them would help form a better understanding of TB not only in India but all over the world.

"TB is a national emergency. India accounts for 99,000 of the global burden of 390,000 multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB cases annually - 25 percent of the total burden.

"The mortality associated with this form of TB is higher than drug-susceptible TB. Now, an even bigger challenge has emerged called "extensively drug-resistant TB" (XDR-TB)," he said.

The earlier surveys were carried out in Bangladesh, Brazil and China but had smaller sample sizes and covered just four drugs.

Vardhan further said that an email repository will be built up for establishing connectivity between the government and all doctors in the country as it will help in the national fight against TB.

It would facilitate instant transmission of news to all health authorities, public health and healthcare providers, public health laboratories and healthcare professionals. "The repository could be utilised to spread information on new medical knowledge to all doctors," he said.

Recalling the first TB survey conducted in India- by Dr Arthur Lankester, the Secretary of the Medical Missionary Society of India in 1914-16 - Vardhan said, "People would lose faith in these surveys if nothing short of time-bound, target-set programmes are launched. We did it for polio, so let us use the same energy to fight TB." He re-launched the Ministry's media campaign on TB.

Health Diaries: Excercise is a bit of a stumbling block

As a journalist, you get used to probing the minutiae of other peoples lives. When the tables are turned, its not so easy, especially when the e word is involved - exercise.

While I try to embrace healthy eating, exercise is a bit of a stumbling block, my main concession being walking Lucy the Labrador. And right now shes sprawled across the sofa. Im the non-sporty one in the household.

The boys, who are just turned 15 and 11, are on soccer teams in Portlaoise. The 11-year-old also plays hurling, football and table tennis. Hubby played hurling in his heyday but now spends a lot of his time on the sidelines. After having two stents inserted a few years back, he started to incorporate daily walking into his routine and to cut back on sweet treats.

Ironically a move to the country has meant fewer opportunities to walk as our road is a narrow twisty and busy one. The lane leading up to the forest across the road tends to be mucky in autumn/winter, so he has joined a local leisure centre.

His approach is not as rigorous as the 15-year-olds who deemed himself to be too skinny so he joined a local teen gym during the summer. Now its all about benching and bulking - and eating scrambled eggs at strange times of the night. All with the aim of gains in strength and weight.

While he has become a tad obsessive about food, the good thing is he is more aware of nutrition, and has even attempted to cook. I think hes a bit young for the gym but as his GP remarked Girls want to get skinnier and boys want to get bigger.

Im mainly vegetarian but the others are carnivores. As were both freelancers, working to erratic schedules and with some form of sports training for the boys on most evenings, putting healthy food on the table that suits everyone can be a challenge.

A lot of veggie dishes involve a multitude of ingredients and Im not the best of cooks. I started to eat a small amount of fish a few years ago but Ive gone back to mostly vegetarian fare. Ive tried to shift the emphasis away from red meat to fish but the 11-year-old isnt a fan. So sometimes it can be a case of a three-dish dinner in the evenings.

On a recent visit to Lyrath Health Club, Kilkenny, I picked up some simple recipes as well as advice - on some go-to foods such as Quinoa, nuts and seeds.
