Thursday, March 30, 2017 - Updated: 1:39 PM Did we do everything perfectly during the Mayoral Forum held March 9 no. But for a first time attempt at hosting a forum such as this, we think the event was overall very successful. Prior to the night of the forum all four candidates received information about how the forum would be held as well as a list of 13 possible questions that could possibly be asked during the forum. Unfortunately those questions were not numbered. Prior to the forum, the questions we did number were cut into strips and put into a container and were drawn out randomly to determine the order the questions would be asked. The names of all four mayoral candidates were also cut out and folded and placed into a second container. After each question was drawn, the names of the candidates were also randomly drawn to determine the order of who would speak. At the forum, copies of the list of questions available as they were to be asked. Some candidates did seem to be thrown off by the different order of the questions. Our moderator that evening asked a couple of times if they wanted a copy of the list of questions. Following the forum, a post on social media by a journalist questioned the Planets intentions and accused us of trying to make Julian Butch Adams look bad. That is simply not true. The journalist should have asked us. We wanted to have a forum where the candidates could express their views, visions and opinions to the questions being asked. We wanted the candidates to answer questions and for the forum not to turn into a debate where candidates could have rebutted any of the answers being given. If anyone had questions about how the forum was handled or organized, they would have been more than welcome to call our office or drop by to talk to us about it, including the journalist, rather than blatantly accusing us of intentionally making someone look bad. Our intent was to better inform the voters in Metropolis about the candidates running for the office of mayor, and we think through the Facebook Live feed and from our You Tube channel, that was accomplished, despite what the naysayers say or think. In previous consolidated elections, the voter turnout in Massac County has been embarrassingly low. The county residents who only have to decide on school board members may think the election is no big deal, and might decide not to vote. Dont forget the lesson we all learned during last years November general election when votes were counted on Election night for the proposed 1 percent sales tax referendum the referendum failed by one vote. Of course two weeks later the absentee ballots that were opened sealed the fate of the sales tax. Anyone who thinks voting on school board members is not that big of a deal obviously has not been reading the Planet the past few weeks or been watching the Massac Unit One meetings on our You Tube channel. Unit One Board of Education is facing huge cuts for the next school year and will likely have to make more cuts after that. These people who are elected to sit on the board will be the ones making decisions when it comes to your tax dollars and the majority of the property taxes goes to the school districts. There are contested races for mayor in Metropolis and in Brookport and seven people running for four, four-year terms on the Massac Unit One School board. There are also candidates running for seats on the Metropolis and Brookport councils for aldermen and on Joppas village council and for the Joppa-Maple Grove school board. So the bottom line is, dont think your vote does not count because it does. Every election time, we will always encourage everyone who can vote to exercise your right to do so.

Memory care center highlights improvements at Stamford retirement complex

STAMFORD The needs of todays senior citizens continue to evolve and so have the range of services offered by one of the citys largest retirement communities.

Representing a landmark project in its 19-year history, the Edgehill center at 122 Palmers Hill Road completed earlier this year a $21 million expansion and renovation. The upgrades include a new memory-care wing for residents who have Alzheimers and other forms of dementia, an expanded skilled-nursing facility with more private rooms and improved independent-living accommodations.

Our residents come in independently and live in independent-living apartments, Christopher Barstein, Edgehills executive director, said in an interview last week. And as needs arise, they can move onto a traditional assisted-living environment, and they can move onto a skilled-nursing environment. But what was missing was that dedicated, specialized memory-care environment.

Covering 15,700 square feet on Edgehills third floor, the Harbor Wing memory-care center contains 22 apartments. Harbor Wing also includes a dining room, activities area and two patios.

Certified dementia practitioners staff Harbor Wing. They assist residents throughout the day.

I like living here a lot, 87-year-old resident Carrol Houser said during an interview last week. They are very friendly.

To maintain and strengthen Harbor Wing residents cognitive capabilities, Journey Stations aim to engage them in a memory or take part in activities that interest them. Those stations include a sewing machine, fishing rod, tackle box, art brushes, paint and a canvas.

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimers disease, which represents the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., according to the Alzheimers Association.

Demand has grown nationwide for memory-care centers such as Harbor Wing because of the extent of care required by seniors with dementia, said Dr. Patrick Coll, medical director of senior health at UConn Health in Farmington.

For folks who need continuous supervision, if they have a family that has time and resources, often well see families wholl work it out among themselves to be there for Mom or Grandma, Coll said. But for some folks thats not an option, because theyre busy with work and other commitments, and thats why these residential options are now available.

Edgehill also made extensive changes one floor down from Harbor Wing. As part of the overhaul of its second-floor skilled nursing facility that covers about 24,000 square feet, Edgehill increased the number of private rooms from four to 42. The skilled nursing center now has 46 beds, compared with 60 before the renovation.

When you see the changes that are happening at the (Stamford) hospital right now all private rooms, brand-new facility the expectations in this market are for that same thing, a (skilled-nursing) facility with a high level of finish, with additional amenities and, most specifically, private rooms, Barstein said.

Creating the memory care center and refurbishing the skilled-nursing complex involved significant reconfigurations including the relocation to the ground floor of assisted-living units previously located on the third floor and expanding the footprints of the second and third floors.

The improvements to Edgehills 216 independent living apartments included an enlarged casual dining restaurant and several new amenities such as a rooftop garden, a parlor and entertainment room, a fitness center and a massage therapy room. Edgehill also includes 10 assisted-living apartments.

Construction work for the renovation finished in January, after starting in March 2015.

Firefighters Remember Fallen IA Colleague – Firehouse.com (press release) (registration) (blog)

Posted: March 25, 2017 at 8:46 am

without comments

March 23--There were hardly any empty seats, or dry eyes, at the Ames City Auditorium Thursday, as family, friends, co-workers, and members of the community paid their final respects to fallen Ames firefighter Steve Buser.

Buser, 51, died unexpectedly last Friday morning at Fire Station No. 2, where he had served for over 17 years. He had returned from a call the previous evening, and was found unresponsive in the station's excercise room.

Ames Fire Lt. Doug Neys served with Buser at the station, and considered him to be his "go-to guy."

"Steve was a true professional firefighter," Neys said. "If I needed something done, and I wanted it done right, I went to Steve."

Neys told the more than 800 people who crowded into the auditorium for Buser's memorial service, that Buser was a free spirit, whether he was wearing his kilt, riding a bike in freezing temperatures, or walking around in sandals to show of his painted toenails (courtesy of his daughter Braxton). He also reflected on Buser's propensity for working out and eating healthy while on shift. He said that Buser would often cook fish, and that the smell would circulate throughout the station.

"The only time we could get him away from that is when we'd cook fajitas," Neys joked. "We tried to have fajitas a lot."

Prior to the service, parts of Sixth Street were blocked off to allow the procession to pass by a Nevada fire engine flying the American flag. Once the procession finished, firefighters formed a lane as the flag and the urn carrying Buser's ashes were brought in, followed by the family as bagpipes played in the background. Once inside, a firefighter placed Buser's coat, boots and helmet at the foot of a white-cloth covered table holding his urn, a medal and a folded American flag. The table was flanked on one side by a larger picture of Buser and a flowered wreath.

Neys emphasized that the Fire Department is a family, and that everything they go through, and everything they see, is done together. He said that everything they do is for the community, and that no one seemed to exemplify that more than Buser.

"Everything he did, he did it with dedication," Neys said. "We could all learn some dedication from Steve, what he did, and the way he lived."

Ames Fire Chief Shawn Bayouth used statistics to show just how much Buser had done for the Ames Fire Department. Bayouth said that Buser had responded to over 3,000 incidents in his 17-year career with the department, and logged over 20,000 hours on duty.

In addition to speaking about Buser's accomplishments, Bayouth spoke directly to Buser's family, particularly his wife Angie, and daughter Braxton. Bayouth said the Fire Department is also feeling the loss of a brother, but is dedicated to helping Buser's family get through this difficult time.

"You both lost a loving husband and devoted father, but on that fateful day -- March 17, 2017 -- you gained 57 big brothers and big sisters," Bayouth said in reference to the number of firefighters in the department. "In Steve's far too short 17 years with the Ames Fire Department, he created lasting bonds with the brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire service that even death cannot break."

Family friend Scott Mills -- donning a kilt as Buser liked to do -- spoke about Buser outside of the department. An avid cyclist, Mills said that he and Buser completed RAGBRAI seven times, and how the latter always seemed to be the leader of the pack, and a man that made an entire group feel safe.

Buser and Mills created cycling jerseys for RAGBRAI, which were present onstage, with Buser's fire suit, helmet, and bikes. According to Mills, the jerseys had both of their names on the back, which though he admitted seemed silly at the time, have new meaning now.

"I know he always has my back," Mills said.

And rather than strictly speak about his memories with Buser, Mills at one point spoke directly to Braxton, and said that she could not have received a better father.

"You probably already know this, but on May 16, 1998, you my dear won the daddy lottery," Mills said. "Of all the dads you could have got, you got Steve Buser."

And Mills addressed the entire family, and auditorium, when he promised to never speak of Buser in the past tense.

"He's still here' he's in all of you guys," Mills said as he pointed around the auditorium. "He'll never be gone."

The service concluded with the striking of the four fives, a tradition that dates back over 150 years, which consists of four sets of five bell strikes with pauses in between, to signal to the department that a firefighter (important official or personage) has died in the line of duty.

Adele reveals her excercise regime – Woman’s Day New Zealand

Posted: March 24, 2017 at 4:41 pm

SHAREPIN ITShare this on Email The songstress has revealed why fancy gym equipment isn't necessary to get in shape

Adele once famously said: I'm not going to lose weight because someone tells me to. I make music to be a musician, not to be on the cover of Playboy.

However, the Hello hitmaker has been sporting a considerably healthier look since she first hit the global music scene in 2008.

While its safe to assume the 15-time Grammy Award winner has naturally slimmed down from running around after her sweet four-year-old son Angelo, its the drastic lifestyle changes shes made over the years that have her glowing from the inside out.

In a candid interview with The Daily Mail, the 28-year-olds personal trainer, former triathlete Pete Geracimo, let slip the workout secrets that shaped the super-singer, and, fortunately for our bank accounts, expensive and fancy equipment is not required.

The most reliable type of exercise, for me, would be bodyweight training. You do not need to go to the gym to do it, no equipment required and your body weight provides more than enough resistance to get in a great workout. It leaves no room for any excuses not to train," he says.

A challenging circuit of body squats, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups, dips, chin-ups and plank work will stress every body part and give you a great overall workout.

Her killer mindset

It may sound easy enough, but even Adele is honest about her hatred of the gym.

I was trying to get some stamina, so I lost a bit of weight - not to be like a Size-0 or anything like that," she told Rolling Stone magazine.

I mainly moan. I'm not skipping to the f---ing gym. I don't enjoy it. I do like doing weights. I don't like looking in the mirror, she says.

Her diet

Under the guidance of her trainer, who has also sculpted the bodies of Kim Cattrall and David Hasselhoff, Adele has taken up the Stirtfood diet, which encourages a full body reprogram by the consumption of plant foods, like kale and buckwheat.

Known as sirtuin activators, these foods not only suppress appetite, but also activate the bodys "skinny gene" or "housekeeping genes" which help control the way the body handles and stores fats and sugars, whilst simultaneously regulating those pesky cravings.

The Sirtfood Diet is all about losing weight and feeling fantastic through eating great-tasting food. It's based on extensive research into the power of key plant foods, which when added to our diet turn on fat burning and improve wellbeing, a source close to Adele explained to Mail Online.

The meal plan allows Adele to munch away on a fairly regular diet (one that includes red wine and cheese) making sure to incorporate green tea, cocao powder and turmeric all of which are high in sirtuin activators.

Kicking her vices

While she has no regrets in giving up smoking, the beloved Brit has had to make one of the ultimate sacrifices on the pursuit to optimum health.

I used to drink 10 cups a day with two sugars in each so I was on 20 sugars a day, she once told The Sun before adding, Now I don't drink it and I have more energy than ever.

It’s about balancing eating right with excercise | Life | newspressnow … – News-Press Now

Posted: March 20, 2017 at 7:44 pm

without comments

March is National Nutrition Month, which provides a great chance to get back on track and kick those bad eating habits.

Make small changes because unless youre a superhero, you cant make a complete life change overnight, says Heather Hausman, a personal trainer and instructor with H2 fitness.

She says taking a little step, like switching out a soda for a healthier beverage, is a great place to start.

Kombucha is a great drink, Hausman says. Its a fermented tea so it has probiotics in it. It helps with digestion and gives you energy.

Prepping your meals not only saves you time but is a simple way to keep you on track.

Make sure that you have a plan, Hausman says. If you dont have a plan, its very easy to pick up a candy bar or a bag of chips. But if you have something fixed and ready to go, its so easy to stay on track.

She says just making sure you have a healthy snack with you helps. Keep things easy by grabbing a sandwich bag of cut-up fruits or veggies. Another option is a bag of mixed nuts.

You are what you eat, Hausman says. If you throw a bag of chips in your bag, youre going to feel crummy later. But if you eat a banana and some cashews, you going to have energy and feel good.

Yogurt is another great thing to have on hand.

All yogurts have probiotics, but you want to look for one that has low sugar, Hausman says. If you look at the ones with fruit on the bottom, those are loaded with sugar.

She says if you look at the ingredients on the label, the first three ingredients are very telling of whats in that product whether it be yogurt or anything else. If one of the first three ingredients is sugar, its not a great choice. Things like honey or maple syrup for flavor and a little sugar are OK, just be mindful of how much youre eating.

Its important to be mindful of everything that youre putting in your body. Try eating as close to the ground as possible as you can. Sticking with fruits and veggies is the best way to go.

The longer you go without it, the easier it is to say no, Hausman says. If you can hang on for two weeks cutting sugar out of your diet or at least cutting it down over time, you will be able to do without it.

Buy the produce thats already cut up. While it may cost a little more, youre not going to end up throwing it away. Youll actually eat it.

And dont forget about exercise. Take the stairs whenever possible. Anytime you can get your heart rate up a little bit, thats an extra bonus. Park as far away as you can while youre out. Every step counts.

Consider partnering with someone to get things on track.

You want to find someone to help you be accountable, a friend or a personal trainer, Hausman says. Keep a food and or an exercise diary. Whenever you write it down, I ate three peanut butter cups, youre going to second-think before eating like that again.

For those days you cant meet up with friends, send what you did workout wise to them. That way youre helping each other stay motivated.

National Nutrition Month is about eating right and exercise, its about the whole health spectrum, Hausman says.

Novi airman among three killed in New Mexico training excercise – Fox 2 Detroit

Posted: March 17, 2017 at 1:41 am

without comments

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - The Air Force has identified a Novi airmen as one of the three killed during a training exercise on Tuesday in New Mexico.

Capt. Andrew Becker, from Novi, was killed in the training accident in eastern New Mexico. The 33-year-old pilot was killed along with 29-year-old Capt. Kenneth Dalga from Goldsboro, North Carolina, and 26-year-old co-pilot, 1st Lt. Frederick Dellecker from Daytona Beach, Florida.

All three were assigned to the 318th Special Operations Squadron at Cannon.

The cause of the single-engine U-28A's crash near the Clovis Municipal Airport is under investigation.

Col. Ben Maitre, commander of the 27th Special Operations Wing, says the unit's thoughts and prayers are with families and friends of those killed.

Col. Maitre said during a news conference Wednesday that it would be premature to speculate on what caused the crash. He said there was no indication of any problems with the plane, and weather reports for the area suggested clear skies.

"Right now, we're working to secure all of the data from the wreckage and the documentation that went into the preparation and conduct of that sortie," Maitre said.

Investigators also are reviewing maintenance records for the plane.

Maitre described the U-28A as reliable, saying that type of aircraft is used thousands of hours a year and that crew members fly hundreds of hours annually to maintain their proficiency with the plane and its systems.

Capt. Brandon Baccam, chief spokesman for the wing, said the crew was assigned to the 318th Special Operations Squadron, part of the 27th Special Operations Wing based a Cannon.

The wing's units use several types of aircraft to perform missions that include personnel transport, combat support, aerial refueling of helicopters, close air support and drone operations.

Officials said use of the Clovis airport was part of the training mission, but additional information on the mission and circumstances of the crash itself were not immediately available.

The crash caused a fire that was extinguished by local firefighters, officials said.

Two large pieces of the aircraft, including the tail section, were visible Wednesday morning at the crash scene.

"We are deeply saddened by this loss within our Air Commando family," Maitre said. "Our sympathies are with the loved ones and friends affected by this tragedy, and our team is focused on supporting them during this difficult time."

Cannon has about 5,800 military personnel and civilian employees.

It has been several years since the base has had a fatal crash, Maitre said.

The last deadly crash involving a U-28A occurred in Africa in 2012 as the plane was returning from an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission for the war in Afghanistan. Four airmen were killed.

An Air Force fact sheet says the U-28A is used for tactical airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of special operations forces. The plane typically has a four-member crew of two pilots, a combat systems officer and a tactical systems officer.

According to the fact sheet, the U-28A "evolved from commercially available aircraft that were purchased and then modified with communications gear, aircraft survivability equipment, electro-optical sensors, and advanced navigation systems." ___

Davenport reported from Phoenix. Montoya Bryan reported from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Education and excercise collide at Writing Center Write-In event – Gannonknight

Posted: March 15, 2017 at 1:42 pm

Mar 14 Features 48

Its back and its here with a vengeance. Finals season is approaching in less than 50 days, and the Student Success Center is working alongside the Recreation and Wellness Center (RWC) to prevent the ill effects of all-nighters with the Writing and Research Center Write-In. The Write-In will be held from 6-10 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, in the RWC, featuring focused study pods creating different work environments, so students who write better in silence and students who prefer endless Spotify playlists will be accommodated. Designed with the freshman critical analysis research papers in mind, the Writing and Research Center is teaming up with the RWC to provide an environment to crank out term papers, with an open invitation to all students. Writing is a very fluid process and very personal, Elizabeth Kons, director of the Writing and Research Center, said. [Its] is one of the most anxiety-inspiring obligations we have in college. The WRC is trying to ease that anxiety at all points of the writing process. By incorporating wellness like snacks, stretching and time management, the Writing Center and RWC hopes to alleviate some of that anxiety, Kons said. The idea for the Write-In came about when Kons read research on studying and physical activity. From there, she connected with Mary Jean Taylor and representatives at the RWC who helped bring the proposal to life. Were the WRC and theyre the RWC, Kons said. I think it was meant to be. Weve stumbled upon collaboration at Gannon that will stick forever. Kons said she noticed many first-year students internalize their writing process in her composition classes, and she hopes this event will change that pattern. Registration for the event, which falls on advising day, will be available online at gannon.mywconline.com. Students are welcome to come in any time during the four-hour period and work on writing assignments once registered. While typical appointments at the Writing Center involve one-on-one discussion with a student tutor, the Write-In will take a more informal approach. Jeannette Long, student director of the Writing Center and a graduate English major, said tutors will be floating around the space in a style similar to a classroom work day. You know how the teacher will come around and check on you? Long said. Thats what well be doing. Long said she is excited for the events kickoff March 29. Were looking to get lots of participation, and its a good way to spend a Wednesday night, Long said. Snacks will also be provided for those participating to encourage healthy alternatives to typical late-night snacks like pizza and heavily caffeinated energy drinks. Ashley Kolniak, an administrative aide at the RWC, said these snacks are not the best choice.

Often times, we see college students take to energy drinks and unhealthy food choices in order to give them the energy to complete their work, Kolniak said. Kons said the snacks will be inspired by options at the Fresh Caf in the RWC. But Im not going to take away anyones coffee, she joked. Not only will the Write-In provide healthy snacks to motivate students, RWC staff will be available to encourage active study habits, like taking breaks to stretch every hour or so. Studies show that students who are more physically active get better grades and graduate on time more frequently. At its core, the Write-In is an opportunity for students to learn about cultivating a culture of wellness in their own lives, by incorporating healthy practices into their busy schedules. Kons says she hopes participants will learn to integrate moments of wellness throughout time spent studying. Were trying to make all-nighters a little bit healthier, Kons said. Rather than ignore the pattern, the Writing Center and RWC staff want to meet students where they are in their academic work and put those habits in a healthier direction. We all do it, Kons said. Were all procrastinators and were all busy. Long said she hopes students gain valuable study skills from participating in the Write-In. Once you can identify how you study best, you become a more successful student all-around, Long said.

At the beginning of the month, Beijing officials vowed to crack down on the citys dancing grannies by issuing fines to anyone playing loud music in public spaces. While this news was a relief for some, many Beijingers felt badly for the elderly ladies who gather in groups to socialize and excercise.

Well, it looks like a solution that will please all parties may have been found: headphones. Thats right, community workers recently started issuing special wireless headphones to troupes of dancing grannies, Beijing Daily reports. So now they not only get to keep square dancing, but they get to listen to music too.

So far, these headphones have been issued in 11 communities in northwest Beijing.

Regardless of whether its students preparing for their university entrance exam, workers on the night shift, or women who just gave birth, none of them want noise, Sun Renping, a leader of one dance group, told Beijing Daily. We tried to lower the volume, but we couldnt hear it ourselves.

Luckily community workers had the brilliant idea to contact a headphone manufacturer in Guangdong. The company actually produces headphones for dancing grannies. These special headphones play music from a nearby music player using a wireless signal. Therefore, groups of dancing grannies can listen to the same song and dance in unison without disturbing their neighbors.
