A personal vision is more than just a singular goal; it's a comprehensive picture of how you want your life to look, driven by your core values, passions, and long-term aspirations. Once you define your vision, you can work with the end in mind, aligning your personal and professional paths for a more cohesive, fulfilling and successful life.
When your vision is clear, the work you do in one area of your life naturally supports and enhances the others, and you'll see the benefits in seven key areas.
When you prioritize your values and goals, it informs your approach to decision-making and guides your actions. For instance, if you view integrity as a core value, this principle means you will prioritize honesty in relationships and commitments with family and friends. This might involve being truthful even when it's difficult, standing by your commitments, and consistently showing respect and fairness in your interactions.Professionally, integrity might mean seeking workplaces and roles that uphold ethical standards, ensuring that your career choices are consistent with your personal beliefs, leading to greater job satisfaction and a sense of purpose.
A clear purpose motivates you to pursue your passions and goals. For example, if your vision emphasizes personal growth, you'll naturally look to expand your horizons. At a personal level, that may look like learning a new language or developing a new hobby. This same drive can lead you to excel in your career, taking on challenging projects or seeking additional training. You'll also be more likely to choose a job you're passionate about because you're intrinsically motivated to choose something that sparks your interest. The desire for growth also builds resilience because you cannot grow without adapting to change.
A well-defined personal vision clarifies decision-making in all parts of your life. For example, if you prioritize family, you might focus on spending quality time with loved ones, planning family vacations, or coaching your child's sports team. Professionally, this clarity might act as a filter for making career decisions, helping you evaluate job offers, projects, and opportunities based on how well they align with your family commitments.
A long-term perspective helps you set and pursue goals that contribute to your overall life satisfaction and growth. For instance, if you value continuous learning and self-improvement, you might pursue higher education or attend training or workshops. In your professional life, this same value helps you set and pursue SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) goals that align with your overall life plan. If you want to be a leader in your field, for example, you might set goals to study and implement techniques used by people you admire.
If your vision includes being a supportive partner and friend, you will prioritize clear communication, trust and working to understand a perspective that differs from your own. Professionally, these same priorities will improve your interactions with colleagues, mentors, and industry peers. You might see this translate to effective collaboration and teamwork as you build positive professional relationships and create a supportive work environment.
Understanding your priorities helps you lead by example in your personal life. For instance, if your vision includes providing community leadership, you might organize neighborhood cleanups, volunteer at shelters, or start a local garden project.
In a professional management role, this might involve setting specific, achievable goals for your team and encouraging open communication to address any challenges. Providing clear expectations and support creates a positive work environment where everyone feels valued and motivated to work towards common goals.
Integrating your personal goals with your daily activities ensures a balanced and fulfilling life. If your vision includes maintaining a healthy work-life balance, you might set aside specific times for family, hobbies, and relaxation, reducing stress and enhancing well-being.
Professionally, this might involve setting boundaries for work hours, prioritizing tasks effectively, and taking regular breaks to recharge. Encouraging a healthy work-life balance within your team can also lead to higher job satisfaction, improved morale, and a more positive work environment.
Creating a personal vision helps you focus on what truly matters and provides clear direction for your life. It clarifies your decisions, keeps you motivated, and ensures your actions align with your core values. This focus boosts your confidence, enhances your ability to navigate challenges, and allows you to recognize and seize opportunities that move you closer to your goals.

Video: Layla, Bat Dog for Phillies’ Single-A Team, Grabs Final Bat Before Retirement – Bleacher Report
Posted: at 2:36 am
Layla, a white labrador retriever, has wrapped up her career as the bat dog for the Philadelphia Phillies' A-ball affiliate.
The very-good dog who has been with the Clearwater Threshers for six years picked up a bat for the final time during Friday's game against Fort Myers.
After wrapping up her last game, Layla got a special retirement treat and gift from the club.
Layla became a social-media star in 2018 when a video went viral showing her owner, Andrew Davis, asking her to get him a beer from the refrigerator. She jumps off the couch, opens the fridge door with the help of a towel placed on the handle, grabbed the can, brought it to him and went back to shut the door.
Per Leah Burdick of WMNF Radio in Florida, Layla had actually trained alongside athletes at Webber International University when Davis was a student at the school.
Davis explained to Burdick he showed Dominic Repper, Threshers manager of promotions and game entertainment, the viral video and it gave Repper an idea. It just wasn't certain at that point if Layla could pick up a bat.
"When we first contacted the Threshers, Layla didn't even know what a baseball bat was," Davis said.
It didn't take long before Davis took Layla to baseball fields near their home where he taught her to pick up a bat and bring it back to the dugout.
Even though Layla won't be there to pick up bats, Davis told Burdick he will keep bringing her to Threshers games as a fan.

Football and chess: the art of play from Crete to Berlin – TheArticle
Posted: July 14, 2024 at 2:42 am
Returning from an expedition to the archaeological wonders of Minoan Crete, I have arrived in London with plenty of time to spare to watch England in the Euro Final at the Berlin Olympiastadion tomorrow. In virtually any sport, watching the global elite in action is always instructive.
My trip to Crete set me thinking about the relationship between physical and mental sport. In particular, the views of Beethovens inspiration for the9th Symphony, the German philosopher and dramatist, Friedrich Schiller, who evidently saw no distinction between mental and physical play.
To preface the following quotation, a brief biography of the translator is deserved:what is a self-contained quote inthe native German, does not transpose to English easily.
The treatment is a sensitiveinsightby an eminent German journalist, who earned her doctorate in Slavic philologyafter attending Hamburg University. Chairwoman of theGerman Journalists Associations admissions committee, she more recently lectured on Ethical Journalism at the Free University of Berlin.
Der Menschspieltnur, wo er invollerBedeutungdesWortesMenschist, und eristnurdaganzMensch, wo erspielt. Thus the mighty Schiller.
The following elucidation (Man is only fully Human When at Play) isfromFriedrich SchillersIdeasConcerning the Aesthetical Education of Man,by GesineDrnberg.
In Schillers opinion, to play means to act free from the force of need as well as of duty and thus to enjoy liberation from necessity. It is this experience of freedom that links play with the aesthetical phenomenon of beauty and causes its high educational value. The quality that we call beauty represents the same lightness of spirit as the game does. In the beautiful work of art, the material is not dominated by the form or vice versa. The work of art shows a free play between form and matter, between beauty and necessity, and thus represents the highest kind of play. Games are steps on the way to beauty, because they educate the player to enjoy the freedom of creativity.
In Crete the prevailing view, since the early 20th century daysof heroic excavations by Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos, has been that Minoan sport centred very much around bronzed, scantily clad youths, performing amazing acrobatics with bulls. Largely responsible for such impressions have been the fantastic illustrations and reproductions commissioned by Evans from theSwissGillironfather and son artistic team. To my mind, though, their work has more to do with Diaghilevs then fashionable set designer, Leonid Bakst, than with BC Bullocks.
For a start, the mountainous Cretan landscape is far better suited to the cultivation of sheep and goats, rather than cattle. Next, I believe that Crete was essentially a maritime and trading civilisation, dealing with dried fish, ivory, both elephantine and hippo in origin, copper, tin, cedar wood and precious minerals and metals, not bovine produce. The proliferation of rollocks (or oar points for galleys) in the archaeological testament could easily lead to confusion, since humble curved rollocks, given an overheated romantic imagination, might easily be misinterpreted as a bovine rather than maritime infatuation.
Knossos was lauded as the palace of King Minos. Millia, further to the east of Crete, has equally been touted as the palatial residence of King Minoss brother, Sarpedon. On my recent visit I felt, however, that I was more at the epicentre of some vast granary, olive oil and wine store, rather than the hub of a sports training ground for golden Cretan youth.
Cretes eminence amongst that antique topographical ring of advanced cultures, including Mycenae, Egypt, Cyprus, Hittite and Assyrian, suffered from the volcanic explosion of Santorini and later from the unexplained and universal collapse of Aegean-centric civilisation in that fateful year 1177 BC. Whether the cause was famine, epidemic, climate change, drought or incursions of the mysterious Sea People, it is hard to establish.
Views of Cretan sport have been, in my opinion, excessively coloured by the legends of Theseus and the monstrous Minotaur. As with so many cultures, the Aztec arena (Ullamaliztli),Bushkaziin the East, the most popular usually involve a kind of ball.
I have been impressed by an erudite manual, taking Schillers conclusions on the identity of physical and mind sports even further. Comparing the two mind and physical sports activities,Football and Chess:Tactics, Strategy, Beauty by Adam Wells, published by HardingeSimpole, convincingly demonstrates Schillers philosophical position, thatthere are, indeed, more similarities than one might expect. In what follows, I have drawn heavily on the authors conclusions:
At the most fundamental level, football and chess are games that involve using space effectively and getting the timing right in order to break down an opponents defence, whilst preventing them from breaking down yours.
Thats it. There are very few limiting rules. There are no complicated scoring systems and procedures of play that have to be followed. It is clear-cut: we must capture pieces or score goals while staying within the confines of the board or pitch. However you choose to do this is entirely up to you. Since players have such freedom to do what they want, they are presented with a huge number of options of how to act in a given situation. Thus, it is the very simplicity of the games that paradoxically makes them so complex.
Aside from the freedom of choice that the games allow players, it is also the teamwork element which creates the complexity. No other team sport places such an emphasis on harmony between players as football. As in chess, every movement or action affects everything else around it. One badly positioned player (or piece in chess) can be ruinous.
Consequently, a group of superior footballers willsometimes lose to technically weaker players who are interacting more harmoniously. In the same way, as every serious chess player knows, having more powerful pieces left on the board does not guarantee a win. It is the power of the interactions between these pieces which is decisive. This weeks main game is a case in point. Whites nominally more powerful queen can make little headway against Blacks entrenched bishop and knight.
Perhaps it is no surprise that both Rafael Benitez (a Champions League winner when he managed Liverpool FC) and Karel Brckner (long-standing coach of the Czech Republic national team) are both avid chess players, and know only too well how much greater the whole can be than the sum of its parts. Both are famous for their ability to create exceptional teams without exceptional players. Indeed, according to his agent, Benitez has no particular aptitude for noticing good players, such is his preoccupation with watching the team as a whole.
Aneven more contemporarycase for the cross-over between the battlefield of chess and the territorialstrategies of football isexemplified by the appointment of the new Chelsea manager,Enza Maresca. Hisplaying credentials were impressive, having represented Juventus, Sevilla and Olympiacos, among several others. However, his managerial experienceis already exceptional, despitehisscarce years in charge.
Most notably, he managed Leicester Citys return to the Premiership last season, after acting as assistant to the legendary Pep Guardiolaon two separate occasions. While he was studying for his coaching badges at the premier Italian Football University atCovercianoin Florence, his thesis was entitledFootballand Chess. In it,he expanded his conception ofthe positional parallels between the contests.
As a result of the endless possibilities of harmony and interaction, both games are limitless: infinitely complicated, infinitely interesting, forever elusive and mysterious, and always open to new interpretation. This makes them very exciting to play and watch. And so, because, in essence, both games are based on the same concept, if you were a fan of one game, it is likely that you will enjoy the other.
One of the popular misconceptions about chess is that it is a game of pure calculation. Either you have a brain that could work through 10 moves ahead, or you dont. This is not true. Of course, calculation is a large part of chess, but also important is positional knowledge, instinct and creativity. If two players with equal powers of calculation play each other, the player with the greater positional knowledge and better chess intuition will usually win. Great chess players like Mikhail Tal frequently came up with creative responses to problems, and often relied entirely on intuition when they could not work through all the possibilities in their head. As Garry Kasparov says, it takes more than logic to be a world-class chess player. Intuition is the defining quality of a great chess player.
By the same token, playing football well is not just about good positioning, creativity and instinctive reactions. It also requires a lot of calculation.
In most situations on the field, there is more than one option of what to do at any given moment. Players have to make a quick decision on which one to choose. If a player has moved out of position, do you cover? Do you play a fast ball up to the strikers or do you play it into space to build up an attack more slowly? Do you overlap the winger or is it too dangerous? The game involves constant calculation quickly assessing the situation and then making an instantaneous decision. Football, according to former Dutch international ArnoldMhren, is a game you play with your brains, not with your feet.
In other words, the games are not so different in the way that you play and understand them than it seems at first. If you like playing or watching football, you can use the understanding you have to play chess. Similarly, if you are a chess fanatic, you will find that your understanding of chess will help you appreciate a good game of football.
An obvious difference between the games is that one is constantly moving, while the other is static for the most part. However, while many conceive of chess as a slow game, theexperience of playing a good game contradicts this. In every static position movement is implied. As long as your mind is constantly thinking through movements and ideas, the game will be as alive and as exciting as any other sport.
In many senses, chess gives you the opportunity to play a game of football on a board, controlling every piece of developing your understanding of positioning, movement and combinations with every game you play. This is discussedin the followingYouTubeclip offormer world championMagnus Carlsen and Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City FC and widely considered to be the greatest football coach alive.
Despitethe fact thatparallels betweensuch a cerebral pastime andall-action athletic pursuitseem counter-intuitive,their positionalstrategies share much in common. This is the view explored in a fascinatingexamination of the firstNorwegian toplay both sports at the highest level, includingrepresenting his nation in international competition.

He opted instead to play Garry Kasparov in a chess tournament in Belgrade.
Our featured game this week combines football and chess. My game against Agdestein was a serious exercise, where the full point was required, and yet I hope you will agree, vividly epitomises thespiritof, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Leon Masters Day 1: Anand Beats Topalov As He Hunts 10th Title – Chess.com
Posted: July 1, 2024 at 2:37 am
15th World Chess Champion Viswanathan Anand defeated one of his great rivals GM Veselin Topalov 2.5-1.5 on Friday to reach the Final of the 2024 Leon Masters. He'll face the winner of Saturday's Semifinal between GM Arjun Erigaisi and local hero GM Jaime Santos in Sunday's Final as he aims to make it 10 titles in the Spanish city.
The second Semifinal starts Saturday, June 29, at 10:30 a.m. ET / 16:30 CEST / 8 p.m. IST.
This event is the 37th edition of the Leon Masters, a tournament that has been won by World Champions Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, and Magnus Carlsen. The player who has most made Leon his home, however, is Anand, who has played the event 15 times and won on no less than nine occasions.
Leon Masters Winners
54-year-old Anand said it would be "magnificent" to round off his career in Leon with a 10th win, while in the Semifinal he was paired to meet the player he won a World Championship match against in Sofia in 2010, 49-year-old Topalov.
The Bulgarian also has happy memories of Leon, and not just winning the title in 1997. He said after the drawing of lots that he made his debut in elite chess 31 years ago in Leon, when he played in the 1993 tournament and got to face former World Champion Anatoly Karpovin fact, they shared third place on 5.5/9, with GM Leonid Yudasin scoring 7/9.
The other Semifinal is between two young players, 27-year-old local star and defending champion, Santos, and 20-year-old Arjun, who has stormed up to world number-four by playing everywhere, both accepting invitations and playing relatively minor opens.
The format is four rapid games where each player has 20 minutes for all moves, plus a 10-second increment each move. Only if the score is tied 2-2 will a playoff take place with 3+2 blitz games.
The match opened with two wild draws, with Anand later commenting on the live broadcast: "The truth is it was very difficult. I didnt start the match very well, but I survived!"
I didn't start the match very well, but I survived!
Viswanathan Anand
The first clash was a very sharp Vienna Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nc3) where Topalov built up a dominant position where his bishop on c6 completely dominated Anand's rooks on a7 and e7. After 28...Re6? White was winning, but not after the Bulgarian's 29.Bd7?. He was half-expecting his opponent to resign, but it turned out Black was suddenly completely OK!
The second game began with a slow maneuvering Ruy Lopez but suddenly burst into life when Topalov got to sacrifice an exchange. Soon afterward he got a chance to launch a decisive attack on Anand's king but missed one crucial trick.
Topalov quipped that he'd made a mouse-slip when he later blundered a pawn.
Topalov noted, "In sport you have to take your chances," and it was Anand who seized his chance in game three.
An innocuous-looking middlegame position suddenly saw Anand able to launch a kingside attack, and although 37...Nf4+?! isn't one of the computer-approved kills it did ultimately prove enough to give Anand victory.
That's our Game of the Day, which GM Dejan Bojkov analyzes below:
The final game was, therefore, a must-win for Topalov, who played the French Defense, but Anand soon traded into an endgame where only he could be better and went on to make a draw from a position of strength.
Anand-Arjun could be a fascinating clash of the Indian generations in the Final on Sunday, but first Santos will try to stop Arjun in Saturday's Semifinal.
The 2024 Leon Masters is a four-player knockout taking place in Leon, Spain, from June 28-30, featuring GMs Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Arjun Erigaisi, and Jaime Santos. Each match consists of four 20+10 rapid games. If the scores are tied, the players compete in 3+2 blitz games.

Who Are The Youngest Chess Grandmasters? – Chess.com
Posted: at 2:37 am
The game of chess just keeps getting younger and younger! Grandmaster titles are now being achieved at twelve, thirteen, and fourteen years of age. Young talents are able to take advantage of the wealth of information, consistent and regular tournaments, and government supports on a global level. The one thing that remains from the dawn of chess is that to reach the top hard-work is still king.
Top Youngest Grandmasters | Top Women's Youngest Grandmasters
Top 12:
This list showcases the top 44 youngest grandmasters as of April 1, 2024. After barely holding onto the record with GM Gukesh Dommaraju missing him by just 17 days, GM Sergey Karjakin's record was broken by IM Abhimanya Mishra in 2021.
* Pending official FIDE confirmation
Abhimanyu Mishra became the youngest international master in 2019 at the age of 10 and began earning his GM norms in 2021. On June 30, he earned his third and final norm at the Vezerkepzo GM Mix Swiss tournament in Budapest, Hungary to become the youngest GM in history. Mishra broke Karjakin's record, which had stood for 19 years, by more than two months in age.
Here's a clean victory for Mishra over GM Zoltan Varga from the 5th Vezerkepzo GM tournament in 2021.
For 19 years, GM Sergey Karjakin held the record for the youngest grandmaster in chess history at 12 years old and 7 months. Like many children, Karjakin learned chess at the age of five, and just six years later at the age of 11 he was an international master. Karjakin has been World Rapid Champion (2012), and World Blitz Champion (2016). In March 2016 he won the Candidates' Tournament and earned the right to challenge Magnus Carlsen for the World Chess Championship. Though Karjakin lost this match to Carlsen in November 2016, he still has aspirations to challenge the champion in the future.
Karjakin played one of the best games of his career against Caruana at the 2016 Candidates' Tournament. This fighting, back-and-forth game shows the trademark style of Karjakin.
At the age of 12 years, 7 months, and 17 days, Indian prodigy GM Gukesh Dommaraju (or Gukesh D.) became the second youngest grandmaster in chess history. He scored his third grandmaster norm at the 17thDelhi International Chess Grandmaster Openin New Delhi, India.Gukesh's talent was spotted by his first and school coach Mr. Bhaskar, who made sure little Gukesh became a FIDE rated player within six months of learning the game!
Gukesh played his last game as an International Master, winning this game to earn his final grandmaster norm.
When GM Javokhir Sindarov earned the grandmaster title, he was the first player since Karjakin to reach the title before he turned 13! The Uzbek youngster earned each of his three norms in one year at the 2018 Alekhine Memorial, the FIDE World Junior Championship and the First Saturday Tournament.
Sindarov earned his final grandmaster norm at the First Saturday Tournament in Budapest, Hungary, where he recovered from a first-round loss, going on a 7/8 run in his remaining games.
At the age of12 years, 10months, and 13 days, Indian prodigy GM Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu became the then second youngest grandmaster in chess history. He scored his third grandmaster norm at the fourth Gredine open in Ortisei, Italy.
Praggnanandhaa first made his name known by winning continental (Asian) championships and two world championship titles. Praggnanandhaa was also theworld's youngest international master at 10 years old, a record he still holds.
Having already earned his final GM norm in the Gredine open, the Indian prodigy beat GM Roeland Pruijssers to finish a record-breaking tournament performance:
GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov's name made headlines first when he defeated two grandmasters at the age of nine, in 2014 at the Tashkent Open. He scored his first GM norm in the 2016 Chigorin Memorial and then went on to achieve his second in Abu Dhabi in August 2017. He is by far the biggest Uzbek talent sinceRustam Kasimdzhanov, who won the 2004 FIDE Knockout World Championship in Tripoli.
Abdusattorov earned his final grandmaster norm at the Chigorin Memorial, where he beat both GMs S. P. Sethuraman and Evgeny Levin.
Now a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, GM Parimarjan Negi earned the grandmaster title back in 2006 when he was just 13 years old. Since he got the title, Negi has won the Arjuna Award (2010) from the Indian government, the Indian and Asian Chess Championships, and was a member of the 2014 bronze medal-winning team at the Olympiad for India.
Negi's performance in this win against GM Ragger was a fantastic demonstration on how to beat the Caro-Kann, as White's pressure throughout the game was constant.
Nicknamed the "Mozart of Chess," GM Magnus Carlsenis in a league of his own. The reigning world champion's rating has skyrocketed past Garry Kasparovs previous record of 2851 to an unfathomably high 2882. With fierce determination and a palpable will to win, he has dazzled fans with his ability to out-work his opponents and find computer-like moves in his games time after time.
While Carlsen is most known for grinding out wins in near-equal endgames, his most famous game might be his draw against Garry Kasparov, when he was just 13 years old.
GM Wei Yi has broken all kinds of rating and age records throughout his lifetime. He is also the 2nd youngest player in history to break the 2600 rating barrier, after John M. Burke.
Wei's quick progress is apparent, earning both the international master and grandmaster titles in the same year. He was the worlds youngest grandmaster when he earned the title, being only 13 years 8 months and 23 days old.
This game is perhaps Wei Yi's most famous win, as he played with his true attacking style against GM Lazaro Bruzon in the 2015 Danzhou Tournament:
GM-elect Andy Woodward will be the 10th-youngest in history and the youngest in the world when confirmed by FIDE at their next conference.
GM Raunak Sadhwani is currently India's fourth youngest ever grandmaster. While also getting is Elo over 2500, Sadhwani scored his third grandmaster norm in the FIDE Chess.com Grand Swiss in October 2019 in Isle of Man.
Sadhwani ended up scoring 50 percent in a strong field. His opponents were GMs Sanan Sjugirov, Sergey Karjakin, Surya Ganguly, Ivan Saric, Pavel Eljanov, Peter Leko, Gabriel Sargissian, Markus Ragger, Alexander Motylev, Bassem Amin and Maksim Chigaev.
Here's how he defeated former European Champion Alexander Motylev:
GM Bu Xiangzhi earned his title in 1999, making him the youngest GM in chess history when he broke the record (Karjakin would break the record in 2002). Bu won the Chinese Chess Championship in 2004, and has since represented China in four Olympiads, including the 2018 Olympiad where China won gold.
A well-known talent, Bu made more headlines in 2017 when he eliminated Magnus Carlsen in the World Cup, and then beat the world champion again in the World Rapid Championship later that same year.
Only six female players have successfully broken the grandmaster barrier before turning twenty.
Four-time women's world chess champion GM Hou Yifan also holds the record for the fastest any female player has reached the GM title, at just 14 years and 5 months. The Chinese grandmaster is the third woman to ever break the top 100 live rating list, behind GMs Maia Chiburdanidze and Judit Polgar.
Hou has played in many elite invitational events, including the Tata Steel Chess tournament where she beat GM Anish Giri with the Black pieces:
When GM Humpy Koneru made the grandmaster title in 2002, she broke the record for fastest woman to reach the GM title at just 15 years and 1 month. In 2011, the Indian grandmaster was the challenger for the women's world championship title, where she lost to Hou Yifan. Over fifteen years later, Koneru is still one of the best female players in the world.
One of Koneru's best wins came against Peruvian grandmaster Julio Granda Zuniga, where the final position is a worthy Puzzle Rush tactic!
GM Judit Polgar is the only female player to have ever broken 2700 and is the strongest women's chess player of all-time. Polgar is now retired, but has beaten players like Magnus Carlsen, Anatoly Karpov, Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, and many others.
There is no game in Judit Polgar's career that is more famous than her victory over Garry Kasparov in 2002.
Currently the fourth best female chess player in the world, GM Kateryna Lagno has broken records on her way to the top of competitive womens chess. Lagno won the European women's championship in both 2005 and 2008, and played in the 2018 women's world championship against GM Ju Wenjun.
Here's a crushing win of Lagno's against former women's world champion Alexandra Kosteniuk:
GM Aleksandra Goryachkina has taken the chess world by storm. At just 20 years old, the Russian grandmaster has already broken the top 10 women's list. In 2015, she won the Russian women's championship superfinal. The Russian grandmaster repeated the feat in 2017.
While perhaps not her toughest opponent, Goryachkina showed how dangerous she can be in this display against the Stonewall Dutch:
GM Lei Tingjie is one of the strongest female players in China. Lei has participated in a myriad of team events for China that have resulted in gold medals: the Asian Nations Cup (2016), the Batumi Olympiad (2018) and the World Team Championship (2019).
Here's a game Lei won in the 2017 World Rapid Championships with Black, a complete positional masterclass from start to finish!
Now, it's your turn...
Do you think that these records will be broken with the new computer-powered generations?

Post-Millennial Classic: The Mid-Tempo Meditation "Asking for Flowers" by Kathleen Edwards – American Songwriter
Posted: June 11, 2024 at 2:50 am
The work done by Canadian singer/songwriter Kathleen Edwards has been consistently exemplary, even if her career trajectory has been a bit atypical. We could reach into her catalog and find any number of stellar songs worthy of a deep dive, but Asking for Flowers, the title track of her outstanding 2008 album, feels like a particularly dizzying high point.
What is the song about? And what inspired Edwards to write it? Lets take a look back at the meaning and story of Kathleen Edwards Asking for Flowers.
Go through music history and youll find many examples of an artist or a band hitting a peak on their third album. Its not to say Kathleen Edwards first two albums (Failer in 2003 and Back to Me in 2005) were slouches. But Asking for Flowers found her on the improve in just about every way, which is why you can put it on the short list of best albums in both the singer/songwriter and alt-country genres of the past quarter-century or so.
Working with producer Jim Ross, Edwards delivered a rich and varied set of songs. She could be rollicking and funny, as on Ill Make the Dough, You Get the Glory. But she could also tackle the most serious of subjects, as on the true-life tale of Alicia Ross.
At the emotional center of it is Asking for Flowers, a mid-tempo meditation that touches on relationship angst and depression with striking accuracy and heartfelt empathy. Edwards explained to the blog Aquarium Drunkard what inspired the song:
Asking for Flowers was a song I wrote for one of my really close friends. She actually, during this time off I had, was going through a really tough time and has struggled for years with physical and emotional problems. I went to see her at probably one of her hardest times and she told me that her life had been like asking for flowers with some of the judgments and feelings of inadequacy that she had lived with all these years. That the idea of giving somebody compassion and giving them their time without judgment, living a life of asking for flowers. I asked her what that meant and she said being with somebody who just wants to bring them to you and you shouldnt have to ask for them. Someone should want to just bring them to you.
While the song and album should have been a springboard for Edwards, she only released one more LP before going on a hiatus where she contemplated quitting music. Luckily for fans, she returned in 2020 after an eight-year break with the album Total Freedom, which showed he had lost nothing off her fastball.
While Asking for Flowers may have been inspired by the struggles of a friend, Edwards gets deep inside the character like only the best songwriters can do. The first line, Its complicated, seems simple enough, but it sets an important tone. It establishes the difficulty the narrator has in explaining her feelings, and perhaps even some reticence to open up like shes about to do.
Edwards doesnt treat this characters plight lightly. Thats the right move, because its a message that we should never take these situations with a grain of salt when we encounter them in our own lives. Its like a noose around my life, the protagonist complains about the departure of the person who was supposed to be her biggest confidant. Its a devastating betrayal.
In the throes of her sadness, she starts to lose her connection to anything that might properly orient her: Now Im trying to remember / All the names of the faces I loved. She also carries around some blame, perhaps misplaced, for her role in all this, calling herself A walking declaration / Of everything I couldnt get right.
The refrains are reserved for the narrator running down the list of all the efforts shes made to meet the person shes addressing halfway: Every pill I took in vain / Every meal for you I made / Every penny I put away. In the final chorus, she adds a few more items: Every card I signed my name / Every time I poured my heart out. She repeats the last item, which highlights the disparity in the relationship, for emphasis: Every cruel word you let just slip out.
By this point, Edwards voice is quivering with anger, but she returns to a more restrained mode to deliver her final argument: Dont tell me youre too tired / Ten years Ive been working nights. That last phrase is likely both literal, in terms of an actual occupation, and figurative, in that shes worked so hard in vain for so little in return.
So many songs attempt to highlight the resilience of a character, and thats surely admirable. With Asking for Flowers, Kathleen Edwards details that point in someones life when even resilience might not be enough, when suffering is unavoidable, and the help of others is required. How brave of her to take us into that head and heart space.
