India Post News Service

CHICAGO: The Hindu American Foundations podcast All About Hinduism was presented with a 2024 DeRose-Hinkhouse Award of Excellence for Specialty Programming, Podcast Series on April 4, 2024, by the Religion Communicators Council.

All About Hinduism is a 13-part educational podcast series presenting the basic tenets of Hinduism and its history, as well as answering commonly asked questions about the worlds third-largest religion and addressing contentious contemporary issues that Hindus face.

All About Hinduism was produced, written, narrated, and edited by HAF Senior Director of Communications Mat McDermott. The shows academic advisor was HAFs then-Director of Education Dr Shereen Bhalla. HAF executive director Suhag Shukla provided script review. HAF Staff Writer Syama Allard was the shows associate producer.

A second series of All About Hinduism is expected to begin production in the second half of 2024.

Commenting on the award, McDermott stated, Im thrilled that my colleagues at the Religion Communicators Council have honored All About Hinduism with a 2024 DeRose-Hinkhouse Award. Religious literacy in the United States is low, particularly when it comes to Hinduism. Public perceptions about the beliefs and practices of Hindus too often remain dominated by stereotypes and misconceptions. What All About Hinduism set out to do, and I believe achieved, was create a concise and accurate portrait of Hinduism. In the second series we hope to go deeper, furthering our listeners knowledge of this vital, modern, and complex spiritual tradition.

The DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given annually to active members of the Religion Communicators Council who demonstrate excellence in religious communications and public relations.

US resolution condemns attacks on Hindu Places of Worship and Hinduphobia – MyIndMakers

Posted: at 2:40 am

without comments

A notable Indian-American legislator has proposed a resolution in the House of Representatives denouncing Hinduphobia and other forms of hate crimes targeting the community.

The resolution, introduced by Congressman Shri Thanedar on Wednesday, highlights that Hindu Americans encounter stereotypes, misinformation regarding their heritage and symbols, and have been subjected to bullying in educational institutions along with discrimination and hateful speech. The resolution states that the House of Representatives:

Recognises and celebrates the contributions of Hindus and Hinduism to the United States.

Affirms the United States as a nation that embraces the diversity brought by Hindu Americans.

Condemns Hinduphobia, anti-Hindu prejudice, bigotry, and intolerance.

Authorizes the distribution of appropriate copies of this resolution to the public and the press.

The resolution has been forwarded to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. It comes at a time when hate crimes against Hindus, including attacks on temples and individuals, are increasing annually, alongside a concerning rise in Hinduphobia within American society, as stated in the resolution.

Emphasising that the United States has embraced over four million Hindus from various parts of the world since the 1900s, representing diverse racial, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, the resolution underscores the significant contributions made by Hindu Americans to every aspect of the nation's economy and various industries.

Notably, approximately two weeks ago, Indian-American Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna, Shri Thanedar, Ami Bera, and Pramila Jayapal penned a letter to the Department of Justice. They requested a briefing to gain insight into the ongoing investigation concerning a surge in incidents of vandalism at places of worship nationwide, including Hindu temples. Their aim was to better understand the existing coordination among law enforcement agencies regarding these matters.

In a letter dated March 29, it was highlighted that attacks on Hindu temples spanning from New York to California have added to the growing collective anxiety among Hindu Americans. Leaders representing these affected communities have expressed dismay over the lack of leads on suspects, leaving many individuals living in fear and intimidation. Concerns persist within these communities regarding the coordination among law enforcement agencies in addressing these bias-motivated crimes. Additionally, questions arise regarding whether there is sufficient federal oversight to guarantee equal protection under the law.

The frequency of these incidents and their proximity in timing raise concerning questions about potential linkages and underlying motives. Even a small number of coordinated acts of hate can instill widespread fear within a community that has historically faced marginalisation or neglect. It's imperative that we work together to combat hate directed at all religious, ethnic, racial, and cultural minorities across America.

"Therefore, we urge you to outline the Department's strategy specifically aimed at addressing hate crimes targeting Hindus in the United States," concluded the letter.

How major religions take very different stances on trans people and gender identity – The Independent

The Vatican has issued a new document rejecting the concept of changing biological sex.

The doctrine office finally issued Infinite Dignity, a 20-page declaration that has been in the works for five years, on Monday.

After substantial revision in recent months, it was approved by Pope Francis, who ordered its publication.

In its most eagerly anticipated section, the Vatican repeated its rejection of gender theory.

It said God created man and woman as biologically different, separate beings, and said they must not tinker with that plan or try to make oneself God.

The publication is a setback for transgender people who had hoped Pope Francis might be setting the stage for a more welcoming approach from the Catholic Church.

Around the world, major religions have diverse approaches to gender identity, and the inclusion or exclusion of transgender people.

Here are examples from some religions:

The Catholic Churchs disapproving stance toward gender transition is shared by some other denominations. For example, the Southern Baptist Convention - the largest Protestant denomination in the United States - adopted a resolution in 2014 stating that Gods design was the creation of two distinct and complementary sexes, male and female. It asserts that gender identity is determined by biological sex, not by ones self-perception

However, numerous mainline Protestant denominations welcome trans people as members and as clergy. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America elected an openly transgender man as a bishop in 2021.

In Islam, there isnt a single central religious authority and policies can vary in different regions.

Abbas Shouman, secretary-general of Al-Azhars Council of Senior Scholars in Cairo, said that for us, ... sex conversion is completely rejected.

It is God who has determined the ... sex of the fetus and intervening to change that is a change of Gods creation, which is completely rejected, Shouman added.

In Iran, the Shiite theocracys founder, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued a religious decree, or fatwa, decades ago, opening the way for official support for gender transition surgery.

In Hindu society in South Asia, while traditional roles were and are still prescribed for men and women, people of non-binary gender expression have been recognized for millennia and played important roles in holy texts. Third gender people have been revered throughout South Asian history with many rising to significant positions of power under Hindu and Muslim rulers. One survey in 2014 estimated that around 3 million third gender people live in India alone.

Sanskrit, the ancient language of Hindu scriptures, has the vocabulary to describe three genders - masculine, feminine and gender-neutral.

The most common group of third gender people in India are known as the hijras. While some choose to undergo gender reassignment surgery, others are born intersex. Most consider themselves neither male or female.

Some Hindus believe third gender people have special powers and the ability to bless or curse, which has led to stereotyping causing the community to be feared and marginalized. Many live in poverty without proper access to healthcare, housing and employment.

In 2014, India, Nepal and Bangladesh, which is a Muslim-majority country, officially recognized third gender people as citizens deserving of equal rights. The Supreme Court of India stated that it is the right of every human being to choose their gender, and that recognition of the group is not a social or medical issue, but a human rights issue.

Buddhism has traditionally adhered to binary gender roles, particularly in its monastic traditions where men and women are segregated and assigned specific roles.

These beliefs remain strong in the Theravada tradition, as seen in the attempt of the Thai Sangha Council, the governing Buddhist body in Thailand, to ban ordinations of transgender people. More recently, the Theravada tradition has somewhat eased restrictions against gender nonconforming people by ordaining them in their sex recorded at birth.

However, the Mahayana, and Vajrayana schools of Buddhism have allowed more exceptions while the Jodo Shinshu sect has been even more inclusive in ordaining transgender monks both in Japan and North America. In Tibetan Buddhism, Tashi Choedup, an openly queer monk, was ordained after their teacher refrained from asking about their gender identity as prescribed by Buddhist doctrine. Many Buddhist denominations, particularly in the West, are intentionally inclusive of transgender people in their sanghas or gatherings.

Reform Judaism is accepting of transgender people and allows for the ordination of trans rabbis. According to David J. Meyer, who served for many years as a rabbi in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Jewish traditional wisdom allowed possibilities of gender identity and expression that differed from those typically associated with the sex assigned at birth.

Our mystical texts, the Kabbalah, address the notion of transitioning from one gender to another, he wrote on a Reform-affiliated website.

Its different, for the most part, in Orthodox Judaism. Most transgender people will find Orthodox communities extremely difficult to navigate, says the Human Rights Campaign, a major U.S. LGBTQ-rights advocacy group.

Transgender people are further constrained by Orthodox Judaisms emphasis on binary gender and strict separation between men and women, the HRC says. For example, a transgender person who has not medically transitioned poses a challenge for a rabbi who must decide whether that person will sit with men or women during worship.

Rabbi Avi Shafran, spokesman for the Orthodox Jewish organization Agudath Israel of America, wrote a blog post last year after appearing on an Israeli television panel to discuss transgender-related issues.

There can be no denying that there are people who are deeply conflicted about their gender identities. They deserve to be safe from harm and, facing challenges the rest of us dont, deserve empathy and compassion, Shafran wrote. But the Torah and its extension, halacha, or Jewish religious law, are unequivocal about the fact that being born in a male body requires living the life of a man, and being born female entails living as a woman.

In Judaism, each gender has its particular life-role to play, he added. The bodies God gave us are indications of what we are and what we are not, and of how He wants us to live our lives.

Binance Unveils Omni Network (OMNI) as The 52nd Launchpool Project – 99Bitcoins

Posted: at 2:39 am

Binance, a top cryptocurrency by trading volume, is introducing Omni Network (OMNI) as its 52nd Launchpool project, per an update on April 12.

The Launchpool platform has played host to a number of major token launches in recent years, including big names like Pendle Finance (PENDLE).

To participate in the token launches, users must stake BNB or FUSD to farm OMNI coin.

BNB stakers will be able to participate for their share of 2,975,000 OMNI, or 85% of the allocated amount, during this period.

For fairness, a maximum hourly hard cap per user has been set to 3,098.95 OMNI in this pool. Over 60,000 BNB holders have already staked.

Meanwhile, FUSD stakers will share 525,000 OMNI, or 15% of the total supply. A user can receive a maximum of 546.87 OMNI every hour from data, more than 43,000 FUSD holders have staked so far.

875,000 OMNI will be distributed daily for four days starting on April 13. Once this farming period elapses, Binance will list OMNI for trading onApril 17 in a highly anticipated token launch.

However, not everyone can participate. BNB or FUSD holders from the United States, New Zealand, Japan, and five other countries are among those not eligible to farm.

(Popular Binance Launchpool Tokens)

Omni Network developers are opting to use the Binance Launchpool, following the route taken by other successful projects like Sui Network (SUI) with the Launchpool benefiting supporters as follows:

Omni Network is building a layer-1 blockchain similar to Ethereum or Solana. It aims to resolve the challenges faced by leading networks.

The platform offers built-in access to Ethereums vast user base and liquidity while connecting all rollup networks through restaking for higher scalability.

By integrating all roll-ups, Omni prevents fragmentation, considering how quickly layer-2 solutions using rollups are finding adoption.

Omni has over 400,000 users, and more than 30 projects are being built on its rails.

Exclusive: Binance app downloads hit 6.3 million in Q1 – Investing.com

Posted: at 2:39 am

without comments

It seems that Binance has managed to sail smoothly through the storm of legal actions taken by the United States Department of Justice against the exchange and its co-founder Changpeng Zhao.

Binance's mobile application was downloaded more than 6.3 million times in the first quarter of 2024, placing it at the top of the crypto app scene by a considerable margin. The solid performance outstrips that of other major cryptocurrency and fintech platforms, according to the latest data seen by Investing.com.

The lead in app downloads reflects the global consumer confidence in Binance, which serves over 183 million users worldwide. It also highlights the app's quality and range of Web3 functionalities it offers. With deep liquidity, it lets users swap between about 1,800 trading pairs and more than 400 digital assets.

This surge in downloads also comes amid an overall positive momentum in the cryptocurrency market. Binance is riding it with a flood of funds bumping the value of user assets on the platform past the $100 billion mark.

Binance users' assets under custody have more than doubled, jumping from $40 billion at the start of the year. Moreover, the gap between Binance and its closest competitor expanded to more than 21%, with the download figures for platforms ranking third and below trailing significantly behind.

Sensor Tower's data argue that the increase in Binance app downloads can be attributed to the app's user-friendly design and the trust associated with the Binance brand. The app serves as an all-encompassing gateway for users to engage with various Web3 functionalities, including spot and peer-to-peer (P2P) trading, marketplace, and Earn products, contributing to Binance's leadership in Web3 adoption.

This spike in downloads is also happening at a time when the crypto markets are buoyed by the approval of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States and the anticipation of the upcoming halving.

Embark on the Future: Binance App Surges with 6.3M Downloads in 2024s Dawn, Redefining Crypto Accessibility. Dive into the World of Web3 with Binances Intuitive Interface and Join Over 183M Users in the Financial Revolution. Trust, Security, and Limitless Possibilities Await.

Detailed Insights

Binance, a figure in the crypto and fintech realms, has marked a significant achievement by garnering over 6.3 million downloads of its mobile application within the initial quarter of 2024. This milestone not only underscores Binances supremacy among other major crypto platforms but also reflects a burgeoning interest in cryptocurrency applications on a global scale. The notable surge in downloads owes its success to two key factors: the exceptional user experience offered by the Binance app and the widespread trust in the Binance brand, which boasts a vast community exceeding 183 million users worldwide. Binances all-encompassing app provides an array of Web3 services, such as spot and P2P trading, seamless payments, a diverse marketplace, Earn products, and more, positioning it as a frontrunner in driving global Web3 adoption.

As the crypto industry progresses into the second quarter of 2024, it continues to exhibit strong momentum with key indicators signaling robust adoption and consistent use. Among these indicators, Binances remarkable growth in user inflows, which has propelled the value of user funds on the platform to exceed the $100 billion threshold, stands out as a testament to the platforms security, transparency, and reliability.

In a rapidly expanding digital asset landscape, users are presented with a myriad array of service providers. However, Binances unparalleled growth in app downloads in 2024 highlights its unmatched position in the fintech and cryptocurrency sectors. What underlies this trend, and what implications does it hold for Binance and the broader state of the cryptocurrency industry in 2024?

Binances Unrivaled Position

Recent data unveiled by Sensor Tower has put into perspective the massive appeal of the Binance app. Throughout the first three months of 2024, the app has been embraced by iOS and Android users around the globe, amassing more than 6.3 million downloads. This figure not only eclipses that of the nearest competitor by over 21% but also significantly distances Binance from other major crypto service providers, cementing its status as the industry leader.

The resurgence in the crypto markets, fueled by regulatory milestones such as the approval of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States and the anticipation surrounding the Bitcoin halving, has played a pivotal role in the Binance apps success. Its comprehensive features, ease of navigation, and the widespread trust in the Binance brand are primary drivers of its standout performance.

Building Trust and Simplifying Crypto

At the heart of Binances strategy is a user-focused ethos that aims to demystify the crypto space for everyone, regardless of their prior knowledge or experience with cryptocurrencies and financial markets. The Binance app is crafted to provide a seamless entry into the world of Web3, offering a wide array of functionalities including spot and P2P trading, payments, access to a vibrant marketplace, Earn products, Binance Squares social feeds, and a dedicated Web3 wallet.

More than just a technological marvel, the Binance app is your passport to the worlds leading blockchain ecosystem, cherished by over 183 million individuals across the globe. It boasts unmatched liquidity, facilitating trades across approximately 1,800 trading pairs and over 400 digital assets.

Daily, tens of thousands of individuals choose to download the Binance app, seeking to immerse themselves in the digital asset universe. What they receive in return transcends a mere platform for engaging with Web3it represents an invitation to join the largest community of financial freedom advocates, founded upon the tenets of security, responsible growth, and unwavering trust.

Reflecting on these impressive statistics and adoption trends, the dominance of the Binance app in early 2024 lays down a solid groundwork for the expansion of a vibrant, empowered community. This trajectory is not only promising for Binance but is also indicative of the broader shift towards embracing the first billion Web3 users.

Tara VanDerveer retires as Stanford women’s hoops coach after setting NCAA wins record this year – The Associated Press

Posted: at 2:37 am

without comments

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) Tara VanDerveer gave her time and energy to a young Dawn Staley behind the scenes years before the South Carolina coach started winning championships or delivering an improbable undefeated season.

The Hall of Fame Stanford coach did the same for her Pac-12 rivals.

For Cori Close. For Lindsay Gottlieb. For Charmin Smith. For Charli Turner Thorne. And for Kate Paye, who will become VanDerveers successor now that the 70-year-old womens basketball pioneer is retiring.

Nearly everybody has a story of how VanDerveer went out of her way to do something kind along the way during her decorated, four-decade career. She cherished her role in helping the sport any way she could. And now, she is leaving on a high note.

The winningest basketball coach in NCAA history announced her retirement Tuesday night after 38 seasons leading the Stanford womens team and 45 years overall. A news conference was scheduled for Wednesday.

VanDerveer surpassed Mike Krzyzewski for the wins record in January. She departs with 1,216 victories at Idaho, Ohio State and Stanford.

Basketball is the greatest group project there is and I am so incredibly thankful for every person who has supported me and our teams throughout my coaching career, VanDerveer said in a statement. Ive been spoiled to coach the best and brightest at one of the worlds foremost institutions for nearly four decades.

And as has been the plan for years, top Cardinal assistant Paye is set to take over the program; Stanford said in a statement that negotiations with Paye are underway. Paye played for VanDerveer from 1991-95 and has coached on her staff for 17 years.

In 2013, Gottlieb was coaching California, which played in the same NCAA Tournament regional as Stanford. When VanDerveers top-seeded Cardinal were eliminated by Georgia and Cal had to face the Bulldogs next, VanDerveer reached out to congratulate Gottlieb and offer to help with the game plan.

The second-seeded Golden Bears went on to reach the programs only Final Four.

After beating Staley and South Carolina 70-32 on Nov. 26, 2010, VanDerveer made her way to the Gamecocks locker room in Maples Pavilion for a postgame pep talk.

For me being on the West Coast I had a front-row seat to all those things, Gottlieb said by phone Tuesday night, fondly remembering VanDerveer reaching out after Cal beat LSU. The first call after that win was from Tara and she asked if we wanted the Georgia scout after her season had just ended. Those are things you dont forget. It shapes the way you treat opponents, it shapes the way you treat other coaches.

Stanford, which lost to North Carolina State in a regional semifinal this year after last seasons second-round defeat at home to Mississippi, will play in the Atlantic Coast Conference next season after the Pac-12 imploded changes that VanDerveer called sad.

From the time I wrote Tara a letter as a senior in college until coaching against her 25 years later, she has always been the model for game-planning, for excellence and for growing our game, Gottlieb said, and I think our prevailing feeling should be gratitude for everything shes done for all of us.

Turner Thorne, a former Stanford player who later coached Arizona State and is now retired, reached out to VanDerveer immediately after hearing Tuesdays news.

She has done it all so just really happy for her to enjoy life after coaching! Turner Thorne said in a text message to The Associated Press. When you know you know.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma called it a monumental day in womens basketball, and in basketball in general.

When youve coached for this extended period of time and youve accomplished what Taras accomplished, it has an incredible effect on the basketball community, Auriemma said. The number of wins, the national championships, the Hall of Fame. Shes had an incredible career and shes left a great impact on the sport. Its been exciting to compete against her all these years.

Coaches who were mentored by VanDerveer said her legacy will be long-lasting.

Taras influence is both deep and wide. I went to her very first camp at Stanford as a camper, UCLA coach Close said in a text to the AP. I competed against her and worked her camps as a player. And I have now been competing against her and learning from her for many years as a coach. My coaching has been affected on so many levels by Taras example and direct mentorship at many crossroads. Congrats on an amazing career Tara. Our game, the Pac-12 Conference, and my coaching is better because of you. Enjoy retirement. You sure have earned it.

VanDerveers last day is scheduled for May 8 the 39th anniversary of her hiring. She plans to continue working for the athletic department in an advisory role.

Her Stanford teams won NCAA titles in 1990, 92 and 2021 and reached the Final Four 14 times.

Rosalyn Gold-Onwude played on the 2008 Final Four squad and is thrilled about the strides her sport has made since.

Whatever helped her decide, she deserves it all, Gold-Onwude said in a text to the AP. She steps away knowing her work was part of making all this possible, and she deserves all the rest, shes earned it! Im happy for her. Thankful for her.

VanDerveer took a year away from Stanford to guide the undefeated U.S. womens Olympic team to a gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games.

Coupled with my time at Ohio State and Idaho, and as head coach of the United States National Team, it has been an unforgettable ride, she said. The joy for me was in the journey of each season, seeing a group of young women work hard for each other and form an unbreakable bond. Winning was a byproduct. Ive loved the game of basketball since I was a little girl, and it has given me so much throughout my life. I hope Ive been able to give at least a little bit back.

For many in womens basketball, the answer is a resounding yes.

Shes a legend. The game will miss her, Smith, the current California coach and former Stanford player and assistant, said in a text to the AP. Im grateful for everything Tara has done to contribute to the coach I am today.

This story has been corrected to show that Lindsay Gottlieb was coaching California, not Southern California, in 2013.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH)

The City of Columbia, in collaboration with the Black Maternal Health Collective, recently announced a series of events for the inaugural Black Maternal Health Week. This initiative, aligned with the Black Mama's Matter Initiative, aims to raise awareness, promote activism, and foster community-building regarding Black maternal health issues in the United States.

One of the key events scheduled for Sunday, April 7, is "Yoga In the Park with Balloon Release." The session will take place at MLK Park, 2300 Greene Street, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Led by an instructor, this yoga session is dedicated to mothers and families impacted by losses due to maternal health inequities. It offers a peaceful environment for reflection and remembrance. Additionally, the event will feature a Balloon Release to honor those who have experienced loss and to foster community connections and mutual support.

At a press conference, officials highlighted the week's objectives, which include sparking conversations about Black maternal health, amplifying community-driven solutions, centering the voices of Black mothers and families, and providing a platform for Black-led efforts on maternal health and reproductive justice.

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals concerning statistics about Black maternal health in the U.S. In 2021, the maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women stood at 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, which is 2.6 times higher than the rate for non-Hispanic White women. Moreover, Black women in the U.S. are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. Alarmingly, CDC reports that over 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.

The Black Maternal Health Week events aim to shed light on these disparities and mobilize efforts towards improving maternal health outcomes for Black mothers and families.
