We Asked the Experts: How Does a Vegan Diet Support Heart Health? – VegNews
Posted: April 4, 2024 at 2:46 am
We all know its important to take care of our bodies, but one of the most important elements to focus on is, without a doubt, our heart health. After all, heart disease is the leading killer in the United States for both men and women.
jump to the tips
There are many contributors to the development of heart disease, and research suggests that diet is one key factor. But there are things we can do to reduce our risk. Here, we take a closer look at the advice of healthcare professionals who advocate for the power of plant-based food when it comes to heart health.
Without a doubt, our hearts have an extremely important role to play in our bodies. They push blood to every part of us, as well as oxygen, hormones, essential cells, and other compounds. When the heart stops, essential functions fail, some almost instantly, notes Harvard Health. So it makes sense that we need to take care of our hearts as best as we can.

Given the hearts never-ending workload, its a wonder it performs so well, for so long, for so many people, the medical school publication continues. But it can also fail, brought down by a poor diet and lack of exercise, smoking, infection, unlucky genes, and more.
Currently, around 550 million people globally are living with heart and circulatory diseases. And in the US, one person dies of a heart attackwhich often happens when the blood vessels around the heart become clogged with cholesterolevery 40 seconds. There are many factors that can lead to heart disease, but research suggests that an unhealthy diet is one of them.
Diet is one of the only factors within our control which can prevent heart disease, Yelena Wheeler, MPH, RD, tells VegNews. A balanced diet full of complex carbohydrates, fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats, such as a plant-based diet, is instrumental in heart health.
Wheeler isnt alone in her views. A growing body of medical experts believes that a whole food, plant-based diet can help to reduce the risk of fatal heart disease. Here, weve gathered some of their top tips.
Unsplash
On a bold mission to prevent one million heart attacks, Joel Kahn, MD (aka, Americas Healthy Heart Doc) is a seasoned cardiologist who has written extensively on the topic of heart health and diet. According to him, six basic factorsincluding smoking cessation, increasing physical activity, and a healthy dietcan reduce heart disease risk by 92 percent. He also promotes the concept of Vitamin L (the L is for lifestyle) as the key to preventing early death. Finally, Kahn highlights four foods that are particularly good at reversing artery diseasegarlic, pomegranates, bergamot (a citrus fruit), and green tea, as each offers unique, heart-protecting properties.
Plant-based doctor and professor at New York University School of Medicine, Michelle McMacken, MD often writes about protein myths promoted by doctors. She maintains the belief that we need more protein (and that protein always comes from animals) and fewer carbohydrates to get lean is misleading and dangerous. In fact, McMacken cites research that low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets (as well as eating a lot of dairy) are actually associated with heart disease and early death. She reinforces Kahns point that lifestyle changes are the best approach to dealing with the root causes of heart disease rather than pills, which simply address symptoms.
Neal Barnard, MD and the experts at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a nonprofit health organization, have been leaders in the plant-based movement for decades. They do not back down from making bold statements. While the mainstream likes to repeat the notion that fish is a health food, PCRM counters these alternative facts with four important points. Firstly, fish is high in cholesterol. Secondly, fish is high in saturated fat (which has a strong association with heart disease). Thirdly, fish oil supplements effect on heart health is still inconclusive, while some studies have shown that they can increase your risk of diabetes and cancer. And lastly, fish are full of toxins (such as mercury) that are dangerous to our health. So, if youre looking for foods that reduce your risk for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, then its time to look toward plants, not fish.

Leafy greens are one of the healthiest foods on the planet, especially for your heart. This affordable superfood group is packed with heart-healthy nutrients including nitrates that are linked to lower blood pressure and the prevention and reversal of heart disease. Kayli Dice, a registered dietitian at meal planning platform Lighter, suggests loading up on leafy green vegetables every chance you get. Some of her favorite ways include a handful of frozen greens in a morning smoothie, baked into kale chips, or as sandwich fixings wrapped up in chard or collard leaves such as this tasty BLT in a Collard Wrap.
On his site, nutritionfacts.org, Michael Greger, MD provides information regarding heart disease and diet. As he explains, foods high in antioxidants, fiber, and potassium might be protective against heart disease, especially when they are part of a diet thats low or void of animal-based food, salt, and excess fat and oil. Instead, a diet full of dark greens, beans, nuts, flax seeds, whole grains, vegetables, and spices can promote a long and healthy life.

VONG ETF: A Great Way to Invest in Top Growth Stocks – Yahoo Finance
Posted: March 1, 2024 at 2:41 am
Growth stocks are back in the drivers seat in 2024, and the Vanguard Russell 1000 Growth ETF (NYSEARCA:VONG) is a great, straightforward way to invest in a wide variety of them. Im bullish on this growth-oriented ETF from Vanguard due to its strong portfolio of highly-rated growth stocks, impressive historical performance, sound diversification, and low expense ratio.
According to fund sponsor Vanguard, VONG invests in stocks in the Russell 1000 Growth Index, a broadly diversified index predominantly made up of growth stocks of large U.S. companies. Vanguard says that VONG is considered a gauge of large-cap growth U.S. stock returns.
The Russell 1000 Index is an index of the 1,000 largest stocks in the Russell 3000 Index (which represents about 97% of the U.S. public equity market by market cap), and this ETF encapsulates the growth stocks within this large cohort. VONG was launched in 2010 and is now a fairly popular fund, with $18.8 billion in assets under management (AUM).
While there is nothing particularly complicated about this strategy of investing in growth stocks within the Russell 1000, VONG has used it for a long time to generate good returns for investors.
As of January 31, the fund has returned a respectable 10.0% on an annualized basis over the past three years. Zooming out, VONG has returned a stellar 18.0% on an annualized basis over the past five years and an impressive 15.4% on an annualized basis over the past 10 years. Since its inception in 2010, VONG has returned 15.9% per year.
Looking at it from a different perspective, the fund has returned 318.1% on a cumulative basis over the past decade, meaning that if you had put $10,000 into it 10 years ago, your investment would be worth over $41,800 today.
Furthermore, the growth-oriented fund has returned an even more impressive 618.7% on a cumulative basis since its inception in September 2010, meaning that if you put $10,000 into it back then, your investment would be worth nearly $72,000 today, illustrating the power of investing in good funds over the long term.
Story continues
VONG offers investors good diversification, as it holds 442 stocks. However, there is also some concentration here, as its top 10 holdings make up 51.6% of the funds assets.
Below is an overview of VONGs top 10 holdings using TipRanks Holdings tool.
VONGs list of top holdings includes most of the mega-cap tech names that investors know and love, including the entire Magnificent Seven Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META), Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) plus Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO), which might as well be a member of this cohort at this point.
Given the way that these mega-cap tech stocks have come to dominate the broader market, and growth stocks in particular, the fund clearly has a technology bent. And while the technology sector has by far the largest weighting within the fund at 53.0%, growth isnt limited to the tech sector, and VONG owns plenty of growth stocks from other industries.
For example, Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY) is a top 10 holding that has demonstrated surging growth based on the breakthrough success of its GLP-1 drugs for diabetes and weight loss. The company recently reported fourth-quarter revenue that was up 28% year-over-year, remarkable growth for a company of its size, and guided to 2024 revenue that would represent 20% growth at the midpoint. Eli Lillys strong performance has even prompted some market observers to say it should replace Tesla in the Magnificent Seven.
Just outside of its top 10 holdings, VONG owns a wide variety of growth stocks from other sectors, including global payment networks Visa (NYSE:V) and Mastercard (NYSE:MA), as well as massive retail winners like Home Depot (NYSE:HD) and Costco (NASDAQ:COST).
VONGs collection of growth stocks is viewed favorably by TipRanks Smart Score System. The Smart Score is a proprietary quantitative stock scoring system created by TipRanks. It gives stocks a score from 1 to 10 based on eight market key factors. A score of 8 or above is equivalent to an Outperform rating.
Seven of VONGs top 10 holdings feature Outperform-equivalent Smart Scores of 8 or higher, including Broadcom and Amazon, which have Perfect 10 Smart Scores.Just outside of VONGs top 10 holdings, Costco and Mastercard also enjoy 10 out of 10 Smart Scores. VONG itself features an Outperform-equivalent ETF Smart Score of 8.
Perhaps best of all, VONG is a cost-effective way for investors to tap into this strong long-term performance and diversified collection of highly-rated growth stocks. VONGs expense ratio of just 0.08% is extremely inexpensive. An investor will pay just $8 in fees on a $10,000 investment in VONG annually. This is a bargain for an ETF that has put up the types of returns that VONG has.
Assuming that the fund returns 5% per year going forward and maintains its current expense ratio, an investor initially putting $10,000 into VONG will pay just $103 in fees over the course of the decade. Investing in low-cost funds like this helps investors protect the principal of their investments over time and is an important but often overlooked consideration when building a portfolio.
Turning to Wall Street, VONG earns a Moderate Buy consensus rating based on 357 Buys, 78 Holds, and eight Sell ratings assigned in the past three months. The average VONG stock price target of $93.84 implies 10.0% upside potential from current levels.
Theres nothing particularly fancy or exotic about VONGs strategy of investing in the Russell 1000 Growth Index, but it is a simple and effective way to invest in a large group of the markets top growth stocks for a low fee.Im bullish on this uncomplicated Vanguard ETF based on its track record of long-term performance, favorable expense ratio, and diversified portfolio of highly-rated growth stocks.

Yoga, pickleball and more ways to enjoy the outdoors – The Atlanta Journal Constitution
Posted: at 2:39 am
As the weather begins to warm up, there are plenty of ways to stay in shape and shake things up by getting outdoors.
Its important to never have a zero-day when it comes to physical activity, Mitchel Black, owner of STRONGSIDE, a gym wth locations in Woodstock, Canton, and Roswell told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Black stresses doing anything above the minimum can count as exercising, even outside.
Park far away, walk up a hill, take the stairs, get out of breath for about 20 minutes each day, Black said.
Black offers a Legends program at STRONGSIDE specifically for people 55 and older. Each class has a warm-up, strength session, and workout with a special coach trained to work with this age group. They take their workout outside when the weather permits.
If the gym isnt your speed, an easy way to get outdoors and get the body moving safely is to go for a long walk. There are plenty of easier trails around Atlanta for those who want distance over difficulty. If you want more of a workout for your heart, try out trails that offer a little more diversity in terrain.

If you prefer exercising outdoors by playing a sport and havent tried pickleball yet, it might be time to look for a local league. The popularity of this sport has continued to grow.
As a person who has always enjoyed and played a variety of sports, pickleball sparked my interest, and I have enthusiastically encouraged people to give it a try, Mike Levin told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
At 74, Levin considers himself to be in the best physical condition of my life, and plays pickleball at least three times a week.
Among the reasons Levin gravitates toward the sport, he cites its health benefits, how easy it is to learn, the low-pressure stakes of playing, and that its a fun way to meet people while being active.
I get a full-body workout that provides pleasure and rewards. It makes me feel energized, happy, and excited, Levin said.
Yoga is yet another way to exercise indoors or out.
Seniors can gain both flexibility and mobility from practicing yoga, depending on which specific practice they choose, Alena Levine, E-RYT 500, YACEP, lead yoga trainer told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Levine is an instructor at Peach Out Power Yoga in Marietta and the owner of Heartwell Retreats, which combines yoga practice with the sanctity of nature.

Yoga is all about finding the right type of movement and setting a personal intention at the start of each practice, Levine said.
Its also about finding an instructor who offers positivity and shows compassion. Class choice should depend on your personal history and what daily activities you already do, says Levine. If youre looking for a flow that focuses primarily on muscles, try a yang class. Yin classes work on muscles, too, but also bring in a focus on the connective tissues in the body.
Levin includes yoga in his workout routine in addition to pickleball because of the opportunity to take classes outdoors.
Being outdoors helps release stress levels and helps me stay focused, Levin said.
Look for classes held in parks or near lakes around Atlanta for a quieter way to connect your yoga practice of mind and body with a natural setting.
Whether its a more active workout or something that helps you find calm while moving, you can find additional benefits to taking that exercise outside.
Being outside gets you to connect with you, Black said. It gives you that mental clarity thats a big piece to being successful in exercise.

Prayas Theatre Enacts Sanskrit Play ‘Micchakaika’ – Indian Weekender
Posted: February 21, 2024 at 2:49 am
Prayas Theatre, New Zealand's largest South Asian theatre group, recently staged 'Micchakaika', a Sanskrit play by draka, at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre.
Set in the monarchic era of Ujjayin in the 5th century CE, this production became my fortunate endeavour. While reading the script by playwright Shekinah Jacob, visuals of the 1984 Bollywood movie Utsav flooded back. This film, directed by Girish Karnad, produced by Shashi Kapoor and starring Rekha, beautifully depicted the richness of ancient Indian literature.
Boasting a global performance history since the 19th century, 'Micchakaika' has translations dating back to 1826 by Horace Hayman Wilson as 'The Toy Cart' and A.F Stenzler's German translation in 1847.
It found its way into Bengali and Marathi, and in 1850, 'Le Chariot d'enfant' premiered in Paris. Renowned artists, including Raja Ravi Varma, featured the central character, Vasantsena, in their art.
The story follows the journey of Vasantsena, a captivating courtesan or nagarvadhu, and Charudatta, a destitute young nobleman. Despite their mutual passion, their lives and love encounter threats from the persistent advances of a vulgar courtier, Samsthanaka.
Amid intricate relationships, love, loyalty, politics and humour, their story unfolds against the backdrop of a revolution seeking to overthrow an unjust, tyrannical King Plaka.
This age-old story, like Shakespeare's but written over two millennia ago, remains relevant in the cultural milieu of 2023 New Zealand, reflecting on universal human experiences, making it a timeless tale, even for those unfamiliar with Indian culture.
Imagine a world where sexuality is openly embraced and celebrated. Perhaps, in a world where courtesans or devadasis mirrored the 'myth' of Apsaras as beautiful and erotic manifestations of pleasure.
This was ancient India, circa 500 BC. Women, affluent, educated and masters of the arts, stood as custodians of temples and traditions, their lives entwined with the divine, shielded from the shadow of widowhood making them akhanda saubhagyavati. One such example was Amrapali, the royal nagarvadhu of Vaishali.
However, history turned its pages to the medieval era, marking the eclipse of this revered tradition. The onslaught by Islamic invaders laid waste to temples sanctuaries of these devadasis, marking the beginning of their decline. The British colonial period further exacerbated their plight, conflating them with prostitution, leading to their marginalisation and ostracisation.
Similarly, until the Vedic era, gender-based discrimination was nonexistent. Archaeological excavations present evidence of Goddess worship dating back to the Vedic era. Yet again, a melancholic shift ensued toward the medieval period, marred by foreign invasions.
Choosing this subject was not an inclination to dwell in the past but an expression of increasing recognition of the significance of intercultural exchange and dialogue. The prospect of ancient literature gaining relevance stimulates collective learning, growth and connection.
Its not just Indian culture that offers us such treasures. Mori culture has a rich and diverse collection of equally valuable stories.
Stories that have the power to inspire us, teach us and help us understand the world in new and profound ways, stories that should be discussed, danced to, sung and passed on through generations as precious and incredible sources of knowledge and inspiration.

Aging lifers in Mass. look to self-improvement as a pathway to release from prison – The Boston Globe
Posted: at 2:47 am
In 1987, Ferreira told the Globe that through Christianity, I could love for the first time.
In a way, I am as free as I will ever be, he added.
More than 35 years later, however, hes preparing to petition the state to set him free from prison.
Get Money, Power, Inequality
A weekly newsletter connecting you with news about the racial wealth gap in Greater Boston, along with solutions being proposed to bridge the gap.
Governor Maura Healey said in October that her office will use new guidelines to grant pardons and commutations that favorably consider petitioners ages if they are over 50, health issues, and exceptional strides in self-development. Advocates have responded by championing lifers with similar backgrounds to Ferreira as ideal candidates for a reduced sentence.
Supporters say this small group of older lifers should be at the top of Healeys list, citing their model behavior as mentors and students and a track record of contributing positively to the community during the old furlough program.
Theres no way some of these men, who are 60, 70, 80 years old, should be in prison, said Wayne Sorel, who spends hours in conversation with inmates each week as part of his work with the prison ministry at the Christian Fellowship Center in New Bedford. Some of these crimes are very heinous, but that doesnt mean character is not built up along the way if they have the proper facilities to [rehabilitate themselves].
While there were only 24 pending applications for commutation as of last month, Massachusetts could see those numbers rise as Healey joins a national tide of governors who are beginning to embrace pardons and commutations for the first time in decades. Nearly 60 percent of the pending applications were submitted by people serving a life sentence for first-degree murder. And close to half of petitions were from people 60 and older, according to the states parole board.
About a third of all 805 people serving life without parole in Massachusetts are Black, according to Department of Correction data from late 2022. Nearly 20 percent are Hispanic, while close to 3 percent are Asian and about 1 percent are Indigenous.
Healey told the Globe her goal in revamping the eligibility requirements for commutations and pardons was to directly address issues of disparities and of systemic race bias in the system.
Weve got a lot of people who are in the system who are incarcerated, who are there because of serious issues with substance use disorder, with mental health, with trauma, she said, pointing specifically to people incarcerated for offenses they committed as young adults. We know through science now, their brain wasnt fully developed.
Youve got people whove been serving their time, who in some instances have gotten themselves further education, who are ready to contribute and want to contribute, whose families want them to contribute, she added. Lets give them that opportunity.
Ferreiras attorney, Tim Foley, said hes hopeful that Ferreiras time spent preaching and mentoring youth while on furlough will give him a better position with the board of pardons, particularly given the new guidelines focus on self-development.
Its just such a long history of being outside in the community, actually helping the community . . . and doing very well, Foley said. Hes done nothing but try to improve himself from where he was when he was first incarcerated.
Foley said he believes that commutation petitions will really pick up steam with Healeys new guidelines and become the norm rather than extraordinary. Foley said he anticipates that the Governors Council, which must approve all requests for commutation, will serve as a check and balance to the new guidelines.
The new guidelines cast a wide net in order to address long-existing inequalities, he said. However, accountability, self-development, and post-offense behavior are still balanced against the facts and circumstances of the crime.
Among the nearly two dozen people whose commutation petitions are currently pending, several acknowledged the role substance use played in their criminal behavior, while others described growing up in homes where violence and incarceration were the norm a pattern that traces the lives of many men and women who themselves are in prison for violent crimes.
Lewis Dickerson, 75, also intends to make another petition to have his life sentence for first-degree murder commuted. When Dickerson went before the Governors Advisory Board of Pardons in 2005, he told Boston Magazine that his father beat him with belts, cords, and fists before dying in a fight, and that he grew up into a young man who was periodically arrested for property crime and experimented with heroin.
His 2005 request for pardon was denied. Nearly two decades later, Dickerson, who killed a young woman during a liquor store robbery in 1975, said in an email that his years spent working outside the prison at several hospitals around the state taught him patience and discipline and matured him.
This exposure and experience, it kept me from becoming involved in the negativity of prison life and has resulted in the healthier, kinder, more generous person that I am today, he told the Globe.
At the State House, Representative Russell Holmes of Boston is the lead lawmaker pushing for the return of furloughs. In addition to filing a bill to restore the program, Holmes said he also continues to lobby Healey directly to bring the initiative back.
Ive met with the governor multiple times, and my number one ask is to begin furloughs again, Holmes previously told the Globe. Im trying my best to get folks [who are incarcerated] connected to their families again, and if I can remove any barrier to that, Im going to do it.
As someone who struggled with substance abuse for years before becoming a Christian, Sorel, the New Bedford prison ministry worker, said he knows what its like to have a bad record, and can relate to the ones . . . who care to be changed. He said any inmate who has worked consistently to grow and mature while in prison has the potential to contribute meaningfully to society upon release, as long as he has a safe place where he can go to continue rehabilitation and where people can watch out for him.
Sorel, who recently started working with Dickerson as part of his prison ministry, described Dickerson as an honorable man whose whole demeanor [is] to do everything good that he could for his community. He said Dickerson reflects often on his time spent outside the prison walls, and sees the new commutation guidelines as a potential pathway home.
The end of the furlough program shot him down and put him in a sad place, Sorel said, but now he has renewed hope.

Will AI power a revolution in Indonesian education? – asianews.network

JAKARTA While many in the education sector are still grappling with how to keep generative artificial intelligence (AI) out of schools, students in Pekanbaru, Riau, are actively using it as part of a pioneering local government program.
AI is key to preparing for the future in Riau and Indonesia, thereby realizing the vision of a Golden Indonesia that progresses toward an anticipated advanced nation, Governor Syamsuar said during the programs launch last October, as reported in a press release by Universitas Insan Cita Indonesia (UICI).
The Jakarta-based university developed the AI-based education program that is now being piloted in select high schools in Riau. In these schools, students study a curated curriculum at their own pace and preferred location, whether at home or in a caf, using personal computers. Teachers closely monitor their progress.
UICI is a trailblazer in techpowered education in Indonesia. It describes itself as the countrys first fully digitalized university and uses an AI Digital Simulator Teaching Learning System that enables students to study anytime and anywhere, with or without an internet connection.
In Semarang, Central Java, Binus School has also pioneered the use of AI and augmented reality to bring abstract subjects to life. Within dedicated laboratories, students can explore complex subjects like the solar system in an accessible, visually appealing manner, and immerse themselves in an animated prehistoric world to learn about dinosaurs.
These initiatives signal a potential new tech-powered revolution in Indonesian education.

The speed of this revolution is contingent on overcoming several challenges.
During the pandemic, the education technology start-up sector flourished, as students received government funds to take online courses. When the funding dried up post-pandemic and students returned to classrooms, the excitement over edtech start-ups fizzled. But technology to improve learning is not exclusive to start-ups as long as traditional educational institutions embrace them.
Yandra Arkeman, a professor in agroindustrial technology at the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), envisions AI and the metaverse revolutionizing learning: A world where physical colocation of teachers and students is unnecessary, where old biology teaching aids become obsolete.
Education is stepping into the third dimension, he asserts.
Nevertheless, Orbit Future Academy president commissioner Ilham Akbar Habibie notes a persistent emphasis on physical presence in Indonesian schools. Digitally sharing educational resources could address the uneven distribution of quality education across the archipelago.
Despite the governments Merdeka Belajar initiative, which allows students to take online courses from other universities, territorial restrictions in high school enrollment and non-recognition of asynchronous online education hinder the growth of online or distance learning.
Arkeman stressed the urgent need for regulations that can keep pace with technological leaps, especially in education. Teachers also need to be retrained to be able to fully unleash the power of the internet in classrooms.
And then there are the concerns over cheating, or how students ask AI tools like ChatGPT to answer their online tests for them.
To address this, the late Hasri Ainun Habibies Orbit Foundation created Orbit360, an educational service supporting the digital transformation of schools. Orbit360 offers an online examination feature that minimizes the possibility of students engaging in dishonest practices by imposing time penalties when the system detects that the student is trying to find the answer elsewhere.

Aside from leveraging technology to improve education, Ilham emphasized that Indonesia also has to improve education about technology.
Ilham believes that the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) curricula, along with project-based learning (PBL) that applies theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges, should be mandatory to enhance students understanding and application of science and technology in Indonesia.
He highlighted the importance of digital literacy in the educational context, pointing out that students tend to have higher digital literacy levels compared to parents or teachers, depending on their generation.
Digital literacy is considered a significant obstacle because, without adequate understanding, stakeholders may not perceive the relevance and benefits of technology-based education systems.
In addition to digital literacy, Ilham notes other barriers in education technology, including potential
additional costs. Despite the increased effectiveness and efficiency of technology use, some parties may be reluctant to change because of familiarity with traditional systems.
Arkeman also expressed his hopes for the development of the education technology industry in Indonesia.
I hope that in the future, Indonesia can become a producer of education technology, with innovations that can help the country become a leader in digital technology, not just a consumer, he said.
