The film TEILHARD: Visionary Scientist will have its broadcast debut on Maryland Public Television on May 19 at 4 p.m. Telling the story of the late French Jesuit priest and scientist, Father Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, the documentary masterfully weaves together themes from his life, including scientific adventure, the search for meaning, unresolved conflict with authority, the primacy of spirit, and the power of love.

Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for the second time in the history of the world, we will have discovered fire. These words of Father Teilhard open the film, framing the journey of the two-hour biographical film that spans from his birth on May 1, 1881, in Orcines, France, to his death on Easter Sunday, April 10, 1955, in New York City.

Father Teilhard develops a passion for geology and paleontology, fostered in his childhood by hikes with his father exploring neighboring volcanic mountains. He becomes a Jesuit priest, based on a deep spirituality fostered by his mother, who home schooled him.

The words of Father Teilhard himself provide the main thread that leads the viewer through the events of his life, supplemented by interviews with experts from the fields of science and religion, as well as through conversations with family and friends.

The film presents his message as relevant for our day and its rapidly evolving technology. His focus on the evolution of consciousness resonates with todays ascent of artificial intelligence (AI). His writings have also contributed to movements that include ecology, care for the earth, and a hopeful faith, compatible with science. He has inspired followers among believers and non-believers alike.

Father Teilhards own interior struggle between love of the earth and love of God leads to a very personal understanding of cosmic evolution, which he called cosmogenesis. This enthusiasm for evolution, including what it can do to enhance dialogue between scientific thinking and religious belief, puts him in conflict with his Jesuit superiors.

This leads to exile in China for 25 years, suppression of his writings, and a second exile at the age of 70 to New York City making him a sort of 20th Century Galileo. Exile in China, ironically, places Father Teilhard on a geological team that discovers the world-famous Peking Man, the most important missing link in evolution of humans to that point.

His spiritual essays and books, notably The Divine Milieu and The Human Phenomenon, would be published after his death, and in many languages. They reflect what Father Teilhard spoke of as the twin peaks of his interior life an unbounded faith in our Lord and a clear-eyed faith in the world.

This man has given us a vision of hope that really is hope and not pipe dreams, the Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, presiding bishop and primate of the Episcopal Church, says in the film. That is the stuff of prophets. That is the stuff of people who change the world.

Thirteen years in the making, TEILHARD: Visionary Scientist, was produced by award-winning documentary filmmakers, Frank and Mary Frost. The production took them to four countries on three continents a total of 25 locations and included more than 35 interviews.

TEILHARD: Visionary Scientist will be available for national and international streaming for two years, beginning on May 20, 2024, on the free PBS App. Visit https://www.mpt.org/anywhere/pbs-app/ to download the app, and then search for the films title.

DVDs of the program will be available at that time as well, at http://www.MPT.org/shop.

More information on the film and on Father Teilhard de Chardin, including his views on evolution, the feminine, Peking Man, love, and the Universal Christ, may be found at http://www.TeilhardProject.com.

Environmental Implications of the AI Boom | by Stephanie Kirmer | May, 2024 – Towards Data Science

Theres a core concept in machine learning that I often tell laypeople about to help clarify the philosophy behind what I do. That concept is the idea that the world changes around every machine learning model, often because of the model, so the world the model is trying to emulate and predict is always in the past, never the present or the future. The model is, in some ways, predicting the future thats how we often think of it but in many other ways, the model is actually attempting to bring us back to the past.

I like to talk about this because the philosophy around machine learning helps give us real perspective as machine learning practitioners as well as the users and subjects of machine learning. Regular readers will know I often say that machine learning is us meaning, we produce the data, do the training, and consume and apply the output of models. Models are trying to follow our instructions, using raw materials we have provided to them, and we have immense, nearly complete control over how that happens and what the consequences will be.

Another aspect of this concept that I find useful is the reminder that models are not isolated in the digital world, but in fact are heavily intertwined with the analog, physical world. After all, if your model isnt affecting the world around us, that sparks the question of why your model exists in the first place. If we really get down to it, the digital world is only separate from the physical world in a limited, artificial sense, that of how we as users/developers interact with it.

This last point is what I want to talk about today how does the physical world shape and inform machine learning, and how does ML/AI in turn affect the physical world? In my last article, I promised that I would talk about how the limitations of resources in the physical world intersect with machine learning and AI, and thats where were going.

This is probably obvious if you think about it for a moment. Theres a joke that goes around about how we can defeat the sentient robot overlords by just turning them off, or unplugging the computers. But jokes aside, this has a real kernel of truth. Those of us who work in machine learning and AI, and computing generally, have complete dependence for our industrys existence on natural resources, such as mined metals, electricity, and others. This has some commonalities with a piece I wrote last year about how human labor is required for machine learning to exist, but today were going to go a different direction and talk about two key areas that we ought to appreciate more as vital to our work mining/manufacturing and energy, mainly in the form of electricity.

If you go out looking for it, there is an abundance of research and journalism about both of these areas, not only in direct relation to AI, but relating to earlier technological booms such as cryptocurrency, which shares a great deal with AI in terms of its resource usage. Im going to give a general discussion of each area, with citations for further reading so that you can explore the details and get to the source of the scholarship. It is hard, however, to find research that takes into account the last 18 months boom in AI, so I expect that some of this research is underestimating the impact of the new technologies in the generative AI space.

What goes in to making a GPU chip? We know these chips are instrumental in the development of modern machine learning models, and Nvidia, the largest producer of these chips today, has ridden the crypto boom and AI craze to a place among the most valuable companies in existence. Their stock price went from the $130 a share at the start of 2021 to $877.35 a share in April 2024 as I write this sentence, giving them a reported market capitalization of over $2 trillion. In Q3 of 2023, they sold over 500,000 chips, for over $10 billion. Estimates put their total 2023 sales of H100s at 1.5 million, and 2024 is easily expected to beat that figure.

GPU chips involve a number of different specialty raw materials that are somewhat rare and hard to acquire, including tungsten, palladium, cobalt, and tantalum. Other elements might be easier to acquire but have significant health and safety risks, such as mercury and lead. Mining these elements and compounds has significant environmental impacts, including emissions and environmental damage to the areas where mining takes place. Even the best mining operations change the ecosystem in severe ways. This is in addition to the risk of what are called Conflict Minerals, or minerals that are mined in situations of human exploitation, child labor, or slavery. (Credit where it is due: Nvidia has been very vocal about avoiding use of such minerals, calling out the Democratic Republic of Congo in particular.)

In addition, after the raw materials are mined, all of these materials have to be processed extremely carefully to produce the tiny, highly powerful chips that run complex computations. Workers have to take on significant health risks when working with heavy metals like lead and mercury, as we know from industrial history over the last 150+ years. Nvidias chips are made largely in factories in Taiwan run by a company called Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC. Because Nvidia doesnt actually own or run factories, Nvidia is able to bypass criticism about manufacturing conditions or emissions, and data is difficult to come by. The power required to do this manufacturing is also not on Nvidias books. As an aside: TSMC has reached the maximum of their capacity and is working on increasing it. In parallel, NVIDIA is planning to begin working with Intel on manufacturing capacity in the coming year.

After a chip is produced, it can have a lifespan of usefulness that can be significant 35 years if maintained well however, Nvidia is constantly producing new, more powerful, more efficient chips (2 million a year is a lot!) so a chips lifespan may be limited by obsolescence as well as wear and tear. When a chip is no longer useful, it goes into the pipeline of what is called e-waste. Theoretically, many of the rare metals in a chip ought to have some recycling value, but as you might expect, chip recycling is a very specialized and challenging technological task, and only about 20% of all e-waste gets recycled, including much less complex things like phones and other hardware. The recycling process also requires workers to disassemble equipment, again coming into contact with the heavy metals and other elements that are involved in manufacturing to begin with.

If a chip is not recycled, on the other hand, it is likely dumped in a landfill or incinerated, leaching those heavy metals into the environment via water, air, or both. This happens in developing countries, and often directly affects areas where people reside.

Most research on the carbon footprint of machine learning, and its general environmental impact, has been in relation to power consumption, however. So lets take a look in that direction.

Once we have the hardware necessary to do the work, the elephant in the room with AI is definitely electricity consumption. Training large language models consumes extraordinary amounts of electricity, but serving and deploying LLMs and other advanced machine learning models is also an electricity sinkhole.

In the case of training, one research paper suggests that training GPT-3, with 175 billion parameters, runs around 1,300 megawatt hours (MWh) or 1,300,000 KWh of electricity. Contrast this with GPT-4, which uses 1.76 trillion parameters, and where the estimated power consumption of training was between 51,772,500 and 62,318,750 KWh of electricity. For context, an average American home uses just over 10,000 KWh per year. On the conservative end, then, training GPT-4 once could power almost 5,000 American homes for a year. (This is not considering all the power consumed by preliminary analyses or tests that almost certainly were required to prepare the data and get ready to train.)

Given that the power usage between GPT-3 and GPT-4 training went up approximately 40x, we have to be concerned about the future electrical consumption involved in next versions of these models, as well as the consumption for training models that generate video, image, or audio content.

Past the training process, which only needs to happen once in the life of a model, theres the rapidly growing electricity consumption of inference tasks, namely the cost of every time you ask Chat-GPT a question or try to generate a funny image with an AI tool. This power is absorbed by data centers where the models are running so that they can serve results around the globe. The International Energy Agency predicted that data centers alone would consume 1,000 terawatts in 2026, roughly the power usage of Japan.

Major players in the AI industry are clearly aware of the fact that this kind of growth in electricity consumption is unsustainable. Estimates are that data centers consume between .5% and 2% of all global electricity usage, and potentially could be 25% of US electricity usage by 2030.

Electrical infrastructure in the United States is not in good condition we are trying to add more renewable power to our grid, of course, but were deservedly not known as a country that manages our public infrastructure well. Texas residents in particular know the fragility of our electrical systems, but across the US climate change in the form of increased extreme weather conditions causes power outages at a growing rate.

Whether investments in electricity infrastructure have a chance of meeting the skyrocketing demand wrought by AI tools is still to be seen, and since government action is necessary to get there, its reasonable to be pessimistic.

In the meantime, even if we do manage to produce electricity at the necessary rates, until renewable and emission-free sources of electricity are scalable, were adding meaningfully to the carbon emissions output of the globe by using these AI tools. At a rough estimate of 0.86 pounds of carbon emissions per KWh of power, training GPT-4 output over 20,000 metric tons of carbon into the atmosphere. (In contrast, the average American emits 13 metric tons per year.)

As you might expect, Im not out here arguing that we should quit doing machine learning because the work consumes natural resources. I think that workers who make our lives possible deserve significant workplace safety precautions and compensation commensurate with the risk, and I think renewable sources of electricity should be a huge priority as we face down preventable, human caused climate change.

But I talk about all this because knowing how much our work depends upon the physical world, natural resources, and the earth should make us humbler and make us appreciate what we have. When you conduct training or inference, or use Chat-GPT or Dall-E, you are not the endpoint of the process. Your actions have downstream consequences, and its important to recognize that and make informed decisions accordingly. You might be renting seconds or hours of use of someone elses GPU, but that still uses power, and causes wear on that GPU that will eventually need to be disposed of. Part of being ethical world citizens is thinking about your choices and considering your effect on other people.

In addition, if you are interested in finding out more about the carbon footprint of your own modeling efforts, theres a tool for that: https://www.green-algorithms.org/

Baby Reindeer Is a Powerful Meditation on Why Hurt People Hurt People – GogglerMy

Posted: at 2:38 am

without comments

Watching Baby Reindeer, I was reminded of Blanche DuBois from A Streetcar Named Desire and her line, Whoever you are I have always depended on the kindness of strangers. It is a sentiment that applies perfectly to this storys Martha Scott, a former lawyer turned stalker. While boisterous Martha may seem poles apart from Blanche the genteel Southern belle, they have a lot in common. Both women, on the cusp of middle age, are emotionally volatile and struggle with mental illness. Both develop unhealthy fixations with younger men. And both are vulnerable to the kindness of strangers. When Martha receives a tiny act of kindness from bartender Donny Dunn, who offers her a cuppa on the house, its enough to send her spiraling into obsession.

Donny, a stand-up comic struggling to make it big in London with his one-man comedy act, has instead found himself in a cast of millions in his own life story. So when Martha walks into the bar where he works and is immediately captivated by him, Donny cant help but humour her.

For a while, Marthas good for him. Laughter is infectious, and when Martha attends Donnys cringe comedy act, her enthusiasm is the boost he needs to get the audience going. So Donny tolerates her, even as she drags him through her various stages of stalking, from infatuation to desperation, then denial, and finally, terrifying rage.

I went into Baby Reindeer expecting a dark comedy. I wasnt, however, prepared for just how dark or just how powerful it got. You cant stop watching as Martha wrecks Donnys life, overwhelming him with endless messages (hilariously misspelt), catcalling, following him, and then outright endangering herself, Donny, and the people he loves.

I also never expected Baby Reindeer to be such an emotional education on stalking. Without being preachy, the show explores the many dimensions of stalking, from abuse to self-harm, and the psychological trauma that being stalked causes. The show treats these difficult experiences with rare insight and sensitivity.

Through Donny, we learn why people being stalked might be unwilling to confront or even report their stalkers. Many victims like Donny struggle to express how their stalkers behaviour threatens them. Instead, they feel ashamed of their powerlessness or even pity for their stalker. Donny minimises Marthas actions, which allows the abuse to escalate.

Even when he eventually seeks help, the legal systems unfairly skewed views are a barrier. Donny gets frustrated that the police feel the power differentials in female-to-male stalking mean the risk of physical harm to men is negligible. Having been groped by Martha, Donny knows how degrading sexual assault is regardless of gender. After the experience, he was furious at her for making him feel less human and at himself for freezing.

In the end, Donny finds sympathy and support from a surprising source: his tough-as-nails, alpha male dad, Gerry. In one of the shows most wrenching scenes, Donny confesses to his parents about being raped by an older man, and his terror that his family will now think less of him as a man. In a beautifully tender and surprisingly underwritten moment of connection, Gerry reaffirms his sons manhood by reminding the broken boy that he grew up in the Catholic church.

Those wanting to know the meaning of baby reindeer must wait until the end. In the final moments of Episode 7, Donny sits at a bar listening to a voice message from Martha where she expresses why Donny is her baby reindeer and how much he means to her. As Donny weeps for his lost nemesis, he realises he has left his wallet and cant pay for his drink. So the kind bartender gives it to him on the house.

Ive seen speculation online that Donny might now start stalking the bartender. But that misses the point entirely. Donny isnt about to replicate Marthas harmful behaviour. Instead, he has come full circle emotionally. Hes put in Marthas position and realises how his one small act of kindness when she was at her lowest meant the world to her.

At its heart, empathy is what keeps Baby Reindeer grounded amidst all the chaos. The show never gives viewers the luxury of taking the moral high ground or judging Martha or Donny, not even when they do the most self-destructive things. Instead, Baby Reindeer uses the full rainbow of human emotions to explore why hurt people hurt people.

Unveiling The Remarkable Journey Of Sudhir Kove: A Tale Of Triumph, Transformation, And Transcendence – ABP Live

Posted: April 23, 2024 at 2:38 am

without comments

In the annals of history, tales of ordinary individuals transcending their humble beginnings to achieve extraordinary feats stand as timeless reminders of the human spirit's indomitable nature. Such is the narrative of Sudhir Kove, a name now synonymous with resilience, reinvention, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Born into the embrace of simplicity, Sudhir's childhood unfolded against the backdrop of a modest household, devoid of opulence or extravagance. Yet, within the confines of his unassuming surroundings, lay the seeds of greatness, waiting to germinate and bloom with the passage of time.

Sudhir's formative years were characterized by a voracious appetite for knowledge, nurtured by his unwavering love for reading. While his peers indulged in leisurely pursuits, Sudhir found solace in the pages of comic books, immersing himself in worlds of fantasy and imagination. Little did he know that these early literary escapades would lay the foundation for his future endeavors, shaping his intellect and igniting the spark of curiosity that would guide him on his path to greatness.

As destiny would have it, Sudhir's educational journey took a pivotal turn when he transitioned from a Marathi medium to an English medium school in the 8th grade. It was here that he encountered a new realm of possibilities, expanding his horizons and broadening his perspectives. Armed with a keen intellect and a thirst for knowledge, Sudhir excelled in academics, particularly in subjects like Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, laying a solid groundwork for his future academic pursuits.

Fuelled by a relentless drive to carve out his own path in life, Sudhir embarked on the arduous journey of higher education, enrolling in an engineering program in Mumbai. However, the initial days of his collegiate experience were marked by anonymity and a lack of direction. Sudhir found himself adrift in a sea of faces, struggling to find his footing amidst the chaos of academic rigour and personal introspection. Yet, it was during these formative years that Sudhir's latent potential began to emerge, slowly but surely, like a phoenix rising from the ashes of self-doubt and uncertainty.

The turning point in Sudhir's life came when he stumbled upon the ancient art of graphology, the study of handwriting analysis, under the guidance of a revered Marathi guru. Intrigued by the profound insights offered by this esoteric discipline, Sudhir delved deep into its intricacies, unlocking the secrets of human behavior and personality encoded within the strokes of a pen. It was a revelation that would change the course of his life forever, propelling him on a journey of self-discovery and personal transformation.

Armed with newfound knowledge and a burning passion to share his insights with the world, Sudhir embarked on a mission to empower others, donning the mantle of a coach and consultant. The Buddhism-Inspired Meaning Behind Saved by Zero by The Fixx – American Songwriter

Posted: at 2:35 am

without comments

The Fixxs moody, atmospheric Saved by Zero might have seemed like a strange choice as a lead single for their second album Reach the Beach. Not only does the song lack a big chorus, but the concept of someone being saved by a number is esoteric for a radio hit. What could it even mean to be saved by zero? As it turns out, there are at least two meaningful ways to interpret the songs title phrase. One was thought of by The Fixxs vocalist Cy Curnin, and the other was a meaning he wished hed thought of.

The meaning Curnin intended for Saved by Zero emerged from the confluence of changes in his life circumstances and a Buddhist mantra he had been practicing. Lets take a look at the message Curnin tried to get across in this 1983 hit, and the more literal interpretation he has grown to appreciate.

Reach the Beach was The Fixxs breakthrough album, but their 1982 debut Shuttered Room made the band visible enough to change its members lives. Saved by Zero was Curnins statement about how he coped with the changes in his personal and professional lives, as well as a response to the feelings of powerlessness he felt when writing songs for Shuttered Room, such as Stand or Fall and Red Skies. Regarding the latter, Curnin told Songfacts, I was feeling that sense of impotence back then in the early 80s or late 70s when [U.S. President] Ronald Reagan and [British Prime Minister] Margaret Thatcher were getting in bed together, metaphorically speaking, and designing a whole defense system that involved Europeans lives without asking usit was never on any electorate ballot that I can remember.

Saved by Zero was Curnins way of taking his power back. About the time he was writing lyrics for Reach the Beach, he had started to explore Buddhism, and part of his teachings involved a mantra that was about getting back to a state of nothingness. As Curnin explained in a 2008 interview for the Las Vegas Sun, [The mantra] clears your head of all fears and panics and illusions, and you get back to the basics. The idea of the song is how great it is to get back to zero.

In the opening lines of Saved by Zero, Curnin contrasts the yearnings that caused him to suffer with the freedom that comes with no attachments.

Maybe someday Saved by zero Ill be more together Stretched by fewer Thoughts that leave me

Curnin appears to be observing his ego, recognizing his desire to be more together, while simultaneously noticing that those thoughts are only temporary. He makes that contrast even sharper in the final lines of the first verse, when he sings, Chasing after / My dreams disown me / Loaded with danger.

Even with the knowledge that Curnin was writing about his attempts to get back to zero, the chorus remains an enigma. When he sings Maybe Ill win / Saved by zero, what is Curnin trying to win? Is being able to return to zero a win? Or is this the voice of his ego, still chasing its dreams? Later in the song, Curnin poses the question, Who needs to win? Its a question that only deepens the enigma.

Curnin sets the language of dominance and winning next to words conveying surrender and nothingness in the second verse as well.

Holding on to Words that teach me I will conquer Space around me

While his pairing of these seemingly opposite ideas is initially confusing, Curnin could be using the contrast to illustrate what it means to be saved by zero. Its moving away from the holding and conquering and toward learning and openness.

In his interview with Songfacts, Curnin disclosed he had become aware of a mathematical interpretation of Saved by Zero, He learned the number zero is something of a mathematical hero. He explained, There has been the invention of zero as a number by the ancient Indian mathematicians. Without that, calculations would have been completely wrong. Because we were following the Roman rhythmic calendar which believed that one was the first number. He acknowledged he wasnt considering this meaning of Saved by Zero when he wrote it. Nonetheless, he likes the interpretation enough to say, You know what, Im taking it anyway.

After making inroads into the Billboard Hot 100 with Stand or Fall, Saved by Zero gave The Fixx their first Top 40 hit. The song peaked at No. 20 on the Hot 100 and went to No. 9 on Billboards Mainstream Rock chart. The songs popularity laid the groundwork for the follow-up single, One Thing Leads to Another, to be a massive hit for The Fixx. Those two singles went a long way toward helping Reach the Beach achieve Platinum certification in January 1984. It is The Fixxs only Platinum album and the only one to enter the Top 10 of the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 8.

Saved by Zero was used in the Problem Dog episode of Breaking Bad in Season 4. The song was covered by Irish synthpop band Empire State Human for the 2005 compilation The Fixx: An Electronic Tribute.

Its a little ironic that The Fixxs song about being grounded in nothingness only served to make them one of the more popular bands of the mid-80s. Perhaps the only greater irony was when the song was used in advertisements to sell cars with 0 percent financing in the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2007 and 2008. If you missed out on the spiritual meaning of this 80s classic, you were far from the only one.

How Hindu Iconography Became an Extension of Right-Wing Nationalism – Hyperallergic

In the weeks leading up to the inauguration of the Ram Mandir (temple of Ram) in Ayodhya on January 22, saffron flags dotted streets, marketplaces, and private balconies across the north Indian city. They were attached to bikes, cars, and auto-rickshaws, and forcibly hoisted onto a church by a group of men chanting Hindu nationalist slogans. Featuring an image of the Hindu god Ram standing with a bow and arrow in front of the outline of the temple, the bright-orange flags, a color associated with the Hindutva movement, are a sign of celebration the deitys so-called return to his birthplace. The temple was built on contested land where the 16th-century Babri mosque once stood, before being demolished by a Hindu nationalist mob in 1992. The Ram Mandirs inauguration marked a victory for Hindu nationalists and for the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, spearheaded by right-wing politicians in the late 80s, to reclaim Rams birthplace.

When the Ram Janmabhoomi movement picked up, there was this idea that Hindus are victims of historical invaders, and so they needed to have more aggressive, more muscular figures to represent Hinduism, Indian designer and graphic artist Orijit Sen told Hyperallergic. Lord Ram, the hero of the Hindu epic Ramayana, was transformed from a serenely smiling god into a warrior wielding a bow and arrow and sporting a six-pack. Other Hindu gods have also changed in appearance, from the battle-ready Hanuman to the impossibly muscular Shiva. The qualities associated with them have morphed as well, from softer virtues of devotion and humility to a fiery morality. While the idol inside the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is of an innocent five-year-old Ram who has returned home, the images on the flags, posters, and banners across the country portray him as a fearsome warrior.

Gone are the curved, graceful figures the Hindu iconography of the 21st century, often in digitally rendered images, conveys a hypermasculine, aggressive new Hinduism to galvanize people into action. And it has become a chilling extension, and tool, of the Hindu right in India.

From the 6th-century rock-cutting in the Ellora caves to the miniature paintings from the 19th century, Hindu gods were portrayed as graceful, rounded, serene figures in art and sculpture. Historian and writer Anirudh Kanisetti explained that during the medieval period, artists often cast them as idealized royals to give kings more authority as lieutenants or partners of the gods. They had lithe bodies, heavily bejeweled and wearing the latest fashions. These renderings also reflected distinct cultural understandings of sex, masculinity, and gender, as in the Bhakti poetry praising the beauty and sensuality of the gods. They are depicted as strong and powerful, Kanisetti told Hyperallergic, but always in a way thats effortless. As though their power emerges from their divinity, rather than from going to the gym.

Raja Ravi Varma, one of Indias first modern artists, incorporated Western realism into his paintings of the gods in the 1890s. Using human models to illustrate deities, his works were mass-produced, and public spaces were soon filled with calendar art of humanistic gods from the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics. Religious iconography continued to evolve over the next century within pop culture and Hindu gods were depicted in media from Amar Chithra Katha comics and to the popular 1987 Ramayan TV show.

This evolution can be clearly traced through depictions of Hanuman, a monkey deity. Traditionally portrayed in Pahari paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries as a full-fledged monkey, Hanumans only human elements were a crown and a dhoti (long loincloth). He is devoted to Ram and portrayed as docile and playful, usually shown sitting at the feet of Ram and Sita, his wife.

But the version of Hanuman that is now ubiquitous across India is starkly different. The image dubbed Angry Hanuman shows a dramatically shadowed, frowning face in saffron and black. Created by 25-year-old graphic designer Karan Acharya in 2015, this scowling sketch of Hanuman went viral within a year. It can be found on the windshields of cars and trucks, flags, t-shirts, watches, and even WhatsApp display photos.

The Angry Hanuman seems to signify a muscular, aggressive Hindutva, said Kanisetti. One of the founding myths of Hindutva is that all Hindus were humiliated by Muslim invaders, and that this was because Hinduism wasnt sufficiently aggressive.

Even before the meteoric rise of the Hindu nationalist movement in 2014 following the election of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the move toward a more contemporary version of Hinduism was already underway. The success of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement, the Art of Living organization, and figures such as Sadhguru shows that younger generations were open to more modern portrayals of their religion. Images of a muscular Shiva smoking weed became an icon of a new, chill version of Hinduism, showing up on posters in cafes, on t-shirts, and as a common tattoo choice. Theres this image of Indian nationhood thats being created, Kanisetti said. One that is simultaneously traditional, based on an imagined idea of a single Hindu tradition, and one that is contemporary, based on a recent aesthetic of coolness, and it taps into 21st-century anxieties about masculinity and inferiority compared to the West.

Extremist groups and political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), have harnessed the potential of social media to shape religious messaging. Its a successful strategy given the rise of affordable internet and phones in the country, an unemployment crisis, and a fragile democracy in which religious tension is only growing. The imagery that has occupied public spaces in the past few years shows Hindu gods who match the anger and machismo of nationalist groups, frequently led by men. Kanisetti added that they also tap into the insecurities, anger, and fears that some Hindu Indians harbor. On social media, AI-driven retellings of mythological stories offer visuals of a glorious, imagined past, with gods towering over their subjects, muscles rippling and weapons in hand. Commenting on these AI-based visualizations, Kanisetti noted that while they might be unconvincing to many, younger generations might believe in this depiction of Indias glorious past.

There is a kind of imaginary being created to which these figures belong, and its not really an Indian one, Sen added. Its drawing from Hollywood and superhero comics, from Western popular culture. And the reason were seeing it, absolutely without a doubt, is because the Hindu right is creating and pushing it.

Arvind Rajagopal, Media Studies professor at New York University and author of Politics After Television: Hindu Nationalism and the Reshaping of the Public in India (2009), illuminated the transition from an earlier sense of unchanging values into rapidly changing imagery.

There is now a constant revision of how gods are portrayed, throwing aside traditional texts, but always claiming continuity with tradition, Rajagopal told Hyperallergic. And this is something very different. Its meant to terrorize.

‘Monkey Man’ Hits During Its Fight Sequences, But Gets Muddled When It Tries To Explore Religious Extremism in India – Decider

By Radhika Menon

Theres a common, condescending refrain about action movies: leave your brain at home. Focused more on fight sequences and big explosions than story, the genre is usually propped up by the pure adrenaline that comes from its choreography. But in Dev Patels directorial debut Monkey Man, the Indian-British actor isnt satisfied with making a hollow film thats just a vehicle for flashy action a welcome step forward. The problem, however, is that the story he lands on is overstuffed and convoluted, without a salient point of view on the many religious and socio-political ideas it introduces.

In Monkey Man, Patel plays a low-class fighter, simply called Kid, who fashions himself a real-life Hanuman, the monkey-headed deity depicted in the Hindu epic Ramayana. In the Ramayana, Hanuman is a devout ally of Rama and aids him in rescuing Ramas wife Sita from the clutches of the evil Ravana. Patels version instead takes vengeance on an evil police officer whom he witnessed indiscriminately kill his mom and burn down his entire village when he was a child.

There is some critique to be had about the films political stance: Monkey Man seems to take aim at the rising right-wing Hindutva movement in India from the POV of a moderate Hindu, but it doesnt fully delineate the beliefs of each side. Simultaneously, it introduces flashes of real-life riot footage against Muslims without having a Muslim character in the fold as a comp for the films story. Its clear Patel is interested in the current political landscape in his home country, but the execution is extremely confusing even for someone like me who has some background on the current climate in India.

But my biggest issues with the film were structural. At its core, Monkey Man is a revenge thriller as Kid avenges his mothers death. But where it falters is in the why of her death. Mid-way through the film, after a failed assassination attempt on the police officer Rana at the high-end club hes connived his way into, Kid gets ready to take his second shot. In a classic training montage (soundtracked by legendary tabla player Zakir Hussein in a loving ode to Indian musical tradition), Kid works through his demons. We see flashes of his idyllic childhood thats disrupted when corporate interests move into the village and forcefully drive out the resisting residents. An extended sequence, far too late in the film, takes us to the night of the violence, where corrupt Rana sets fire to the village and then kills Kids mom with his bare hands.

But who are these corporate overlords moving into town? Why is Rana implicated with them? What is their religious ideology and their reason for burning down this village? The movie tries to haphazardly answer these questions, and focuses its attention in the wrong direction for much of its runtime. Rana is a crony, not the mastermind, we find out, and we only get flashes of the true villain a right-wing nationalist named Baba Shakti (which literally translates to Father Power) who preaches to frenzied mobs. But his introduction comes too late in the film to pack the punch Patel is looking for. Baba Shakti is likely a stand-in for Narendra Modi, Indias current Hindu-nationalist prime minister (and the probable reason that Netflix dropped the project), but the flashes of Baba Shaktis ominous string-pulling dont effectively set him up as the Big Bad. The misdirection and lack of momentum around his reveal makes the final scenes, where Kid finally threads the needle and kills Rana and then barely takes out Baba Shakti, fall flat.

There are still things to love in Monkey Man: The action is propulsive, and Patels co-written script cheekily name-checks its spiritually similar counterpart in John Wick. (You may have heard a few people talk about a particularly fun scene in which Kid holds a knife in his mouth to execute a kill, and those scenes are where the film is at its best.) During the slow second act, Patel showcases Indias hijras (a eunuch, third gender group prevalent in South Asia whose closest Western comp is the female trans community) and builds them up as allies and underdogs, teaming up with Kid to take down the evil forces in the film. It humanizes the group, a welcome depiction of a class of people who are constantly undermined.

The film has gone through its own reinvention numerous times as it moved from Netflix to Universal, producer Jordan Peele came onboard and allegedly helped cull and streamline the footage and its obvious that some crucial character beats and motivational plot points were deleted. Even leaving the thematic issues aside, there are many indications that the long, tortured production hindered the films script: for one, Made in Heavens Sobhita Dhulipalas Sita has absolutely nothing to do but look beautiful and be a damsel in distress in her very limited screen time, despite her namesake from the Ramayana being viewed as a warrior in modern, feminist retellings of the epic.

I went into Monkey Man hoping to love a film that is clearly interested in fraught topics related to religious extremism and showcasing Hinduism in an approachable way. It is an audaciously ambitious film with its heart in the right place, but unfortunately the storytelling is too muddled to really strike on its desired message.

An Exclusive Interview with Tammy and Dr. Jordan Peterson (The Cale Clarke Show) – Relevant Radio

Posted: April 4, 2024 at 2:47 am

Congratulations to Tammy Peterson for entering the Catholic Church! We welcome all new Catholics who came in this Easter vigil.

Cale Clarke had the privilege of speaking with Tammy and Dr. Jordan Peterson, right after the Easter Vigil at Holy Rosary in Toronto, Canada.

Tammy shared her mesmerizing experience of the vigil. This beautiful tradition resonated with her deeply, reminding her of a similar, enlightening experience at a monastery in Austria, where she and Jordan witnessed their first Easter vigil.

Dr. Jordan Peterson shared that for him, the experience was not just about witnessing but actively participating in a saga of faith that has been years in the making. Tammys exploration of faith, her connection with the Rosary during her illness, and her journey towards Catholicism were credited as profound steps in her entrance into the Church.

Tammys choice of Mary as her confirmation name shows her lifelong search for a maternal figure that she found within the Catholic faith, a discovery intertwined with praying the Rosary during her most challenging times. As a former Protestant, she was always bothered that Mary could not be found in their churches.

Jordan Peterson delved into the philosophical and existential dimensions of Tammys spiritual journey, criticizing modern societys inclination towards worship of nature and the perils of ignoring transcendental truth. Both Tammy and Jordan spoke candidly about the struggles of living in a culture that often prioritizes immediate gratification and power over the pursuit of truth and spiritual depth.

The conversation took a deeply personal turn as they reflected on the themes of death and resurrection, particularly resonating with their experiences of near-death and profound loss, juxtaposed with the joy of new life within their family. This duality of grief and gratitude has helped Tammy to better experience the power of Jesus resurrection.

Tammys account of dealing with her fathers death and the simultaneous birth of her grandson is the embodiment of the Easter message of death leading to new life, a theme that deeply touched both her and Jordan. They reflected on gratitude, the importance of seeking truth beyond oneself, and the acknowledgment of lifes transient nature.

Tammy and Dr. Jordan Peterson encourage you to never take life for granted. Every moment is a gift, so take it in and give thanks to God.
