‘We Are Lady Parts’ is back for season 2 and it’s an irresistible binge – Tom’s Guide

Nearly three years ago, the first season of We Are Lady Parts on Peacock was a blast of giddy energy, with six episodes of punk rock, friendship and solidarity. After a far-too-long wait, the British comedy series is back tomorrow (May 30) with six new episodes, a brief but joyous return to the world of the all-female Muslim punk band Lady Parts. My only disappointment about the season is that its taken so long to arrive, and is over far too quickly.

Lady Parts were just getting started as a band by the end of the first season, but as the second season opens, theyve already completed a U.K. tour and have amassed a decent-size fan base. Creator Nida Manzoor, who writes and directs every episode, smartly moves the story forward while retaining the character-focused approach that made the first season so appealing. Lady Parts may be getting famous, but that doesnt solve any of the individual band members personal problems.
Although lead guitarist Amina (Anjana Vasan) is still clearly the main character, anchoring every episode with her Sex and the City-style narration, season 2 offers extended arcs for all four band members, plus manager Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse). Its a bit more balanced than the first season, which spent much of its time on Aminas internal conflict over whether to join the band.
Everyone in Lady Parts is now firmly committed to the band, and one of the seasons greatest strengths is that its always a celebration of their personal and artistic connection, even when faced with outside challenges.
Newly confident, Amina declares that shes in her villain era and goes after what she wants, even though shes not always sure what that is. Shes still pining for Ahsan (Zaqi Ismail), the brother of Lady Parts drummer Ayesha (Juliette Motamed), although she ends up dating his white co-worker instead. Romantic indecision aside, shes more assertive and ambitious this season, and that gives the show space for the other characters to deal with their own issues.
Ayesha is happy in a new relationship with an outgoing, supportive woman, but she still hasnt been able to come out to her parents. Bassist Bisma (Faith Omole) struggles with her self-image as a responsible wife and mother but also a rebellious punk rocker, and shes showcased in some of the seasons most eye-catching set pieces. Band frontwoman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) continues to fight for Lady Parts integrity, even as shes tempted by the prospect of a high-powered manager and a deal with a major record label.
Even Momtaz, who was more of a background presence in the first season, gets her own empowering arc, as she examines her place in Lady Parts career and the music industry as a whole. Aspects of the industry storyline feel rushed, given the limited number of episodes and their short running times, but Manzoor captures the entire life cycle of an up-and-coming band thrilled by the prospect of stardom, then disillusioned by corporate interference.
During the long break between seasons of We Are Lady Parts, Manzoor wrote and directed the action-comedy feature film Polite Society, and she brings some of that grand, stylized approach to the musical sequences in the new season. The first season had its share of catchy songs, but season 2 features even more original music, including an improbably rousing number about responding to work emails at a reasonable hour.
Lady Parts is a punk band, but their original songs in season 2 feature touches of country and rockabilly, too, and theyre catchy and fun while getting across the adversity that the characters often face as Muslim women in the U.K.
Manzoor, who writes the original songs with her siblings, also makes brilliant use of some unlikely covers: Amina brings poignancy to her solo rendition of Extremes More Than Words, Lady Parts rocks out to a hard-hitting version of Britney Spears Oops! I Did It Again while playing a for-hire gig at a wedding, and Bisma delivers an anguished, slowed-down take on Nina Simones Dont Let Me Be Misunderstood while working through her family issues. The show even comes close to making Hoobastanks goopy power ballad The Reason tolerable during a climactic romantic declaration.
Each song is presented via elaborate musical sequences, with magical-realist touches that make their way into the non-musical scenes as well. Bismas tension with her daughter is represented by a remote control that allows her to literally pause family arguments to vent her frustrations, and Sairas potential censorship by the bands new label manifests itself in her voice being forcefully silenced.
Those heavy moments never drag We Are Lady Parts into sad-com territory, though. This is a comedy that always remembers to be funny, delivering consistently clever jokes while staying true to its characters lived experiences. Bingeing the new season may only offer a short window of time to spend with those characters, but its worth savoring every minute.

Anthony Clark speaks Mandarin fluently, studied in Beijing, and taught tai chi and kung fu for more than 15 years. Students can pop into the Whitworth University professor's office anytime to practice Chinese calligraphy. As a historian of Chinese-Western exchange, Clark has dedicated his professional career and much of his personal life to learning Chinese culture.
But the key to his cross-cultural success? Acknowledging the differences between people, he says, in order to see them as they truly are.
This is the underlying motivation beneath Clark's recent work, Catholicism and Buddhism: The Contrasting Lives and Teachings of Jesus and Buddha. Unlike some of his other scholarly works, it is a short book for the general public that parses the deep-rooted differences between Catholicism and Buddhism.
Though outward expressions of each religion might look similar, the inward motivations of the two practices are separate and, at times, contradictory. While Christians seek to live aligned with a good, loving creator forever, Buddhists hope their kindness will eventually earn them the peace of extinction. Instead of conflating the two belief systems, understanding their differences is a way to respect our neighbors and their worldview, he says.
"Virginia Woolf once said something like, 'If you can't be honest about yourself, how can you be honest about others?'" Clark says. "This idea of being genuinely honest about what one thinks and believes, and what one's identity is, helps us to be more sympathetic."
Clark is a Catholic who teaches classes on China and Buddhism at a Protestant university. He knows what it is to sit in, and even seek out, disagreement. It's a lesson in patience and compassion that is not only helpful in religious discussions, but in any setting where disagreement could be uncomfortable.
"All of my Buddhist friends, especially Buddhist friends outside of the United States, were very adamant that we will understand each other better if we actually write down what we think, so that we can confront these differences and collaboratively work together," Clark says. "So it came about from this strong commitment to be honest, and then secondly, a strong commitment to how much we need to be together with that honesty."
You don't have to be a religious scholar to read Clark's book. It starts with a basic question that almost everyone asks at some point in their life: Is there a God?
"The fundamental difference between Christianity and Buddhism is the God question," Clark says. "The God question is an important one, no matter what religious tradition you're in. In terms of Christianity, we have this idea of a God, then we have this trinity with Jesus and this whole idea of redemption and being given grace and forgiveness. In Buddhism, there is no theology because there's no 'theos,' there's no God. That's crucially different."
Christianity is based on a relationship with the creator, Clark says, in which the human knows that they are loved. Buddhism doesn't worship a deity but is reliant on an impersonal justice system known as karma, where personal actions dictate future incarnations until one reaches the state called "nirvana."
"I like to think of Buddhism as an idea that we have something like a soul, and that soul could go through trillions or zillions of reincarnations," Clark says. "But at the end of one's reincarnated cycle, your soul ends. Now, what that end means is a debate within Buddhism. But you have multiple lives and an end of the soul. Christianity is the opposite. You have one life, but a soul that is eternal. That distinction inspires us to think differently about how we live."
Even though both religions value charity, compassion, peacefulness and self-understanding, the motivations for those virtues are different.
Clark says that Christians ought to live in the secure knowledge that everyone is loved by a creator God who knows and suffers with them. The end goal is for everyone to live together forever.
Buddhists, Clark says, see in every person the possibility that they are a spouse, friend or relative from a past or future life. Therefore, they must be treated respectfully in order to finally achieve the ultimate peace that is oblivion or annihilation.
There are other secondary distinctions that Clark discusses, but they can pretty much all be traced back to these separate foundations.
"The Dalai Lama once said, 'When people say that Christianity and Buddhism are the same, it's like putting a sheep's head on a yak's body,'" Clark says. "My research wants to tease those differences out so that someone doesn't go to Kmart and buy a Buddha statue but not understand the message of Buddhism, which is a beautiful, loving message. But it's good to know what that means. We talk so much in modern academics today about respecting and honoring the other part of that is actually listening to the other. That's part of the project. Celebrating the other requires knowing the other."

This sentiment is not from lack of faith in her nonprofit organization, which helps African American students achieve academic success and connect with their cultural roots, but from the hope that one day its programs wouldnt be necessary.
I knew that the program was necessary from what I was doing at Washington [High School], she said about the beginnings of The Academy in the late 1980s. But I certainly didn't think it was going to last this long, because I thought that society would pull itself together Now I'm convinced that a program like this needs to happen until it's not needed anymore. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not going to see the end of it.
Ms. White, who holds a P.h.D. in American studies from the University of Iowa, was teaching English and literature at Washington High School when she founded The Academy. She was also serving as the Cedar Rapids Community School Districts (CRCSD) academic advisor to minority students, a new position at the time.
It turned out to be extremely informative to me," she said. One of the things I learned was that our students of color, by and large, had no sense of their heritage history legacies.
Ms. White noticed that many of these students would fall into the abyss after high school graduation, academically. She founded The Academy in hopes of cultivating community connection and inspiring pride in their heritage.
The Academy began with a summer program for high school-aged students, which continues to this day. This program, which partners with CRCSD and takes place at Mount Mercy University, offers African American students additional opportunities to learn more about unique and specific subjects such as Black history, gardening, nutrition, and yoga, as well as more traditional subjects like math, science and literature. The Academy has also helped students prepare for college with postsecondary seminars.
To Ms. White, it is important for The Academys students to be taught by teachers who look like them. She said representation makes a difference in the programs', and students, success.
A student of color in [the Cedar Rapids School District] can go from kindergarten through high school and never see a teacher of color, she said. The fact of the matter is, kids do better when they can relate to the person that's teaching them. Does that mean that everybody who teaches them should look like them? Absolutely not But it does mean that there is an intangible advantage that a student benefits from if they have that opportunity.
Students taking part in the high school summer program also have the opportunity to experience travel to culturally significant places. The Academys students have visited Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Memphis, New Orleans and more.
According to Ms. White, every aspect of these trips becomes an opportunity to learn about and connect with cultural heritage. Students have visited museums, seen plays, and gone on college visits. They often meet Black entrepreneurs and experience culturally-significant food at meal times.
There's nothing like actually seeing and experiencing something, Ms. White said. I want to take them to places where they can actually see African American culture in a positive reflection.
The Academy has greatly expanded to include programs for elementary and middle school-aged students, which continue throughout the school year. None of The Academys programs are remedial, which means students must apply to participate and are accepted based on academic achievement and recommendations.
Selective, but not exclusive Ms. White called it.
A 501(c)3 nonprofit with a board of directors and a staff of eight, The Academy is no longer a one-woman show. Ms. White is now looking at establishing a succession plan.
It doesnt keep me up at night yet, but I spend a lot of time thinking about it, Ms. White said. We have to have somebody who has a love for the work and for the kids and some sense of the importance of education and cultural awareness. Someone who can keep body and soul together.
For now, Ms. White is still that somebody and like The Academy itself she is still needed right where she is.

Are the charts telling you that the Nifty is likely to hit 23,000 mark by next week?
The last session had been a roller coaster for the market participants, as the whole rosy setup of Nifty registering record highs, ended on a rough note. However, considering the overbought parameters, the Bank Nifty weekly settlement, and the mid-week holiday, such disruptions could be digested.

On the technical front, the Nifty 50 index looks subtle, hovering above its 20 DEMA. Therefore, traders are advised to maintain a positive stance and view dips as potential buying opportunities, instilling a sense of optimism.
The immediate support is placed around the 22,500 mark, followed by 22,400 (20 DEMA). On the contrary, the lifetime high zone around 22,775-22,800 is expected to serve as immediate resistance before the index heads toward the 23,000 mark.

PFC has also seen a robust move on the back of strong volumes. Importantly, the counter has spurt from its 21 DEMA (days exponential moving average), signifying a strong risk-reward ratio at the current zone. The bullish gap of Rs 416 is likely to cushion any blip, while the counter seems poised to reclaim its lifetime high of Rs 470. Also, the counter seems buoyant, and a sustained breakout would likely trigger fresh traction from a broader view.
Do you think the higher highs, higher lows formation in the Nifty Auto index seems continuing in coming weeks?
The traction in the majority of the auto and auto ancillary counters adds a bullish quotient to their respective index. The undertone seems buoyant as the index surpassed its previous high to register record highs and seems poised to continue its march in uncharted terrain. On the level-specific front, with the structural breakout, 22,700-22,800 is very much in the vicinity for now before it tests the psychological mark of 23,000.
What is your trading strategy for Nifty Financial Services index?
FINNIFTY has witnessed a strong breakout; however, the follow-up was not very convincing, as it formed a Gravestone Doji on the expiry session. The formation at the lifetime high is a concerning factor, and it would be crucial to watch for the intermediate formation of the candlestick on Thursday.
If we manage a closure above 21,900, then we might witness a run towards 22,500 for the upcoming expiry contract. Otherwise, it may fall into a consolidation period, ranging from 21,800-21,000.

NHPC has seen strong traction in the last couple of trading sessions as it resurged from its 21 DEMA to witness an Inverted Head & Shoulder pattern breakout on the daily chart. On the oscillator front, MACD (moving average convergence divergence) and RSI (relative strength index) both have showcased a positive crossover, suggesting strong momentum in the comparable period. So one can buy NHPC at Rs 95, with a stop-loss at Rs 90 and for targets of Rs 102/105.
Balkrishna Industries started forming a rounding bottom for itself after the fall from Rs 2,790, which indicated the formation of a demand zone. In the last couple of sessions, the counter has been gaining momentum, levitating above its short-term EMAs. The stock is in the process of Cup & Handle formation and is likely to gauge momentum in the comparable period. A Clarendon yoga studio is closing its doors as its owner seeks a new location with an additional focus on fitness.
The Suhka Center, which Yelp lists as the number one Black-owned yoga studio in the D.C. area, will be leaving 1016 N. Garfield Street on Friday. Co-founder Damion Moss said high rent and a dissolved partnership with a former business partner are driving him to look elsewhere.
We had an opportunity to do something really amazing here, two brothers coming together to build a yoga studio, Moss said. We have since gone our separate ways ,and since that happened, the pivot started.
Moss plans to open a new wellness space dubbed Good Space somewhere outside of Clarendon. He wants to keep the Sukha Centers focus on yoga, lifestyle and meditation, but also incorporate a more physically rigorous approach.
I look at yoga as a practice thats very empowering, said Moss. Not just the movement but the community and philosophies, how you look at the environment and how you treat others.
Before his time at Suhka, Moss had experience in various areas of wellness and fitness. He learned Budokon, a practice that combines martial arts, yoga and fitness, and established his personal training business, which was recognized as the best in Arlington in 2023.
Moss believes his background helped distinguish Suhka from other yoga studios.
So often you hear people say, I want to go to this class to tune out the world and escape, said Moss. I say Take this class so that you can deal with the world, not escape it so that you are more comfortable to do something uncomfortable.'
No matter where he goes next, Moss plans to continue using his training and personal philosophy to help people improve their wellness.
We are committed to uplifting our community to being better, healthier, smarter about the environment, smarter about how they live their lives, and were still going to be doing that, he said.

Under the Secure Act, certain heirs must empty inherited accounts by the 10th year after the original account owner's death. Otherwise, they could face a hefty penalty. In 2022, the IRS proposed mandatory yearly withdrawals if the original account owner had already started distributions.
Amid questions, the IRS has previously waived the penaltyfor missed RMDs, and the agency on April 16 extended that relief for 2024.

"It's so confusing," said individual retirement account expert and certified public accountant Ed Slott, speaking about the 10-year rule.
"Even the IRS has to give people a break until they can figure out if [beneficiaries] are subject to RMDs or not," he said.
The latest penalty relief only applies to certain heirs, known as "non-eligible designated beneficiaries," subject to the 10-year withdrawal rule under the Secure Act. Non-eligible designated beneficiaries include heirs who aren't a spouse, minor child, disabled, chronically ill or certain trusts.
The latest IRS update says those heirs won't incur a penalty for missed RMDs for inherited accounts in 2024. But they still must empty the account by the original 10-year deadline.
That "could be a little dangerous because it is potentially just letting you kick the can down the road on making a decision," according to certified financial planner Edward Jastrem, chief planning officer at Heritage Financial Services in Westwood, Massachusetts.
With years of delayed RMDs, heirs with sizable pretax inherited retirement accounts may need larger future distributions to empty the account within 10 years.
Before 2018, the federal individual brackets were 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35% and 39.6%. But five of these brackets are lower through 2025, at 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Without changes from Congress, tax brackets will revert to 2017 levels.
Depending on your tax bracket, it could make sense to start making withdrawals in 2024, especially with higher tax brackets on the horizon, Slott said.
Of course, you need to weigh your entire financial situation while planning for inherited retirement account withdrawals. "It's one of many moving parts," Jastrem added.

An Oprah Special: Shame, Blame and the Weight Loss Revolution, aired on March 18 at 8 p.m. on ABC, and will stream the next day on Hulu. It explores the trend of using weight loss medications and the controversy surrounding them.
Oprah's shared her personal weight loss journey and her experience taking a weight loss medication. Her goal for the special is to release the judgement, shame, and stigma around weight.
During the special, Oprah reflected on the body shaming she experienced throughout her career. I took on the shame that the world gave to me," she recalled.
"The number one thing I hope people come away with is knowing that [obesity] is a disease, and it's in the brain," Oprah says in a new clip about the special on Good Morning America.
Ahead of the special's airing, Oprah announced that she was stepping away from the board of WeightWatchers. She was concerned that there would be a conflict of interest.
I decided that because this special was really important to me and I wanted to be able to talk about whatever I wanted to talk about," she explained.
It is a very personal topic for me and for the hundreds of millions of people impacted around the globe who have for years struggled with weight and obesity, she told Oprah Daily earlier this month. This special will bring together medical experts, leaders in the space and people in the day-to-day struggle to talk about health equity and obesity, with the intention to ultimately release the shame, judgment and stigma surrounding weight.
The latest news comes amidst Oprahs own weight loss journey, including her recent admission that regular exercise, nutrition, and weight-loss medications are helping her live a healthier life. Here's everything to know about her health.
Oprah's 2021 knee surgery actually jumpstarted her recent weight loss.
"After [my] knee surgery, I started hiking and setting new distance goals each week. I could eventually hike three to five miles every day and a 10-mile straight-up hike on weekends," Oprah told PEOPLE. "I felt stronger, more fit and more alive than Id felt in years."
Working towards these fitness goals also helped Oprah achieve a personal goal. "In Hawaii, I live on a mountain, and theres this big hillI used to look out the window every morning and say, 'God, one day I want to walk up that mountain,'" she said in her PEOPLE cover story. "Last year over Christmas I did it... It felt like redemption."
In December, Oprah shared with PEOPLE that she was close to her goal weight of 160 pounds, but emphasized that her journey was not about a number but rather about living a more vibrant life.
In September 2023, the multihyphenate hosted Oprah Dailys "The State of Weight" panel. At that time, she shared that she wasn't interested in taking weight loss medication. "Shouldn't we all just be more accepting of whatever body you choose to be in? That should be your choice," she said. "Even when I first started hearing about the weight loss drugs, at the same time I was going through knee surgery, and I felt, 'I've got to do this on my own.' Because if I take the drug, that's the easy way out.'"
But in December 2023, Oprah Winfrey opened up to PEOPLE about how her perspective on weight loss medication has changed over time.
"I now use [weight loss medication] as I feel I need it, as a tool to manage not yo-yoing," Oprah told the publication, without naming the specific drug she takes. "The fact that there's a medically-approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift, and not something to hide behind and once again be ridiculed for. Im absolutely done with the shaming from other people and particularly myself."
Oprah shared that she started the medication before Thanksgiving "because I knew I was going to have two solid weeks of eating." Instead of gaining eight pounds like she did last year, she gained half a pound, per the publication.
